When he was 7 years old, a friend's father was in the entertainment business. Hanging out at rehearsals and on the tour buses sold Matt on the idea of being a musician, or at the very least, a drummer. All this lead to spending his high school years at Fort Hayes vocational school for music and Capital University Conservatory of Music for college studying under drum instructor Bob Breithaupt. The musical diversity in Columbus gave Matt the chance to play with many great players and learning many different styles – from Big Band (Vaughn Weister's Famous Jazz Orchestra) and Brazilian to Afro-Cuban and Fusion. All the while, he was doing his share of gigs with original rock bands and top 40 bands. Matt moved to Nashville in the summer of 1999. Working as a freelance drummer based in Nashville has taken him to all 50 states in the U.S. and most of Canada, as well as overseas to Europe, Asia, The Middle East and The Caribbean. As well as the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville, Matt has performed in great local venues like the Ryman Auditorium, Mercy Lounge, 3rd and Lindsley, The 5 Spot, The Sutler, The Basement, The Wildhorse Saloon, and many clubs on lower Broadway. Matt has toured both regionally and nationally, with the Adam and Shannon Wright, Mark Selby, Eddy Raven, Billy Dean, Stephen Simmons, Three Lane, Whiskey Cash & Roses, Michelle Wright - (throughout Canada), Julie Roberts, and The Frontmen of Country which is Larry Stewart of Restless Heart, Richie McDonald of Lonestar, Tim Rushlow of Little Texas. From 2009 to 2017 Matt was the full time drummer for the band Savannah Jack. He played percussion on their first studio record in 2010 opposite Steve Ferrone on drums. For their second studio record in 2015, Matt was the drumset and percussion player in the studio. In the studio, Matt has had the pleasure of working with talented producers including Eric Fritsch, Teddy Morgan, Jim Reilley and Brent Maher. Artist he's recorded with in the studio have included Sheryl Crow, legendary songwriter Buzz Cason and actor Kevin Costner. In 2015, Matt started a podcast for drummers called "Working Drummer", an interview based podcast that maintains a focus on the drummer that makes a living at his or her craft. Along with the help of co-host Zack Albetta, the podcast has a growing audience throughout the world with more listeners every week. www.workingdrummer.net *******SUBSCRIBE/RATE/REVIEW!!! www.richredmond.com/listen The Rich Redmond Show is about all things music, motivation and success. Today's episode is a conversation I had with the wonderful Russell Mark, of the Pasadena-based husband and wife duo, The Nextdoors. Russell is also a long time performer, composer, sound engineer, producer, music camp director and was a very easy person to sit and talk to for just over an hour and a half!I sat down with Russell on November 13 of this year and we talked about how to craft songs around a cello instead of a bass, how inspiration can often come from unexpected places, the sights and sounds of Pasadena, and whether or not Steve Ferrone is the nicest guy on the planet (spoiler: he is!). We also, of couse, talked about Tom Petty (a lot!) and his influence on Russell's music. Please check out The Nextdoor's website here: https://nextdoorsmusic.com. You can find out his brilliant project The Title Trackers here: https://www.thetitletrackers.com and make sure you check out the fabulous "Awaken", which we talked a fair bit about during the episode: https://youtu.be/Crq3kY8jr4s and don't forget to go check all the social media places where you can find The Nextdoors. Today's episode is a conversation I had with the wonderful Matt Jaffe. After cutting his teeth on open mics around the Bay Area, San Francisco songwriter Matt Jaffe was discovered by Jerry Harrison of Talking Heads. Together, they produced his first album at the age of 16, cementing Matt's dedication to music. Soon, he formed a band, dropped out of college, and has not looked back. Since then, Matt has cowritten with Chuck Prophet and Tom Higgenson of Plain White T's, crisscrossed the country opening for Blues Traveler and Alejandro Escovedo, and recorded half a dozen albums alongside luminaries of the Bay Area music scene. Inspired by the great lineage of rock n' roll, he marries literary lyrics with the undeniable urge to dance.I sat down with Matt on November 2 of this year to talk about his music and the influence of Tom Petty's music in his life. Yet again (man, I've been lucky!) I was so lucky to be able to talk to such a warm, articulate, and genuine artist. I know you'll enjoy Matt's perspectives on everything from the whether the voice is merely an instrument to how Mike Campbell transcends mere soloing as a guitarist and not being intimidated by having Steve Ferrone play drums on his first record! Please check out Matt's website here: mattjaffemusic.com and go check out his Youtube channel here: @MattJaffeMusicDon't forget to follow me on social media, like, subscribe, and please, leave a rating if you like the show:Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thetompettyprojectTwitter: https://twitter.com/TomPettyProjectInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/thetompettyproject/YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCt6BLRWuuAR43zHpNKIirOwAll music, including the theme song, provided by my very best friend Randy Woods. In this episode Laura talks to writer and friend of the pod Rebecca Slaman about Bob Dylan's surprise appearance at this year's Farm Aid, where we played a short set with the Heartbreakers. Here's a fun fact I only figured out after the episode was finished: the song that preceded Dylan's remarks about American farmers during Live Aid was in fact The Ballad of Hollis Brown!I erroneously said that Stan Lynch was on the drums, but it was actually Steve Ferrone.Make sure you subscribe to Rebecca's Substack! You can support Definitely Dylan on Patreon or with a one-off donation at buymeacoffee.com/definitelydylan.

Today's special bonus episode is a conversation I had with San Francisco-based tribute band Petty Theft. I chatted for just about an hour and a half with bassist Django Bayless and lead singer/rhythm guitarist Dan Durkin, the two founding members of the band about how the band came together, how they choose songs to cover, and of course, their love of Tom's music. As I said to the boys during the call, their sense of fun and their love of playing Tom's music shines through both in conversation and when they're on stage laying it down. They've played with Steve Ferrone and opened for Lynyryd Skynyrd and Tesla and they're one of the best bands and they were an absolute blast to talk to: the time flew by. I'm really looking forward to seeing them in the flesh some day and will be on the lookout for geographically opportune moments to connect with a band that embodies the spirit of the music; love playing, love the crowd. Petty Theft is currently in the middle of their 20th Anniversary Tour (so you know they have to be good, because you simply don't last that long if you aren't!) and you can check out tour dates, find out more about the band, and even go support them by buying some merch at their fabulous website, here: https://www.pettytheftrocks.comDon't forget to follow me on social media, like, subscribe, and please, leave a rating if you like the show:Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thetompettyprojectTwitter: https://twitter.com/TomPettyProjectInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/thetompettyproject/YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCt6BLRWuuAR43zHpNKIirOwAll music, including the theme song, provided by my very best friend Randy Woods. Jason Scheff Live on Game Changers With Vicki Abelson Rock Star! Jason Scheff's got the chops, the voice, the lineage, the career, and the hair! And I'm not sure he could be a more lovely, gracious, humble guy. As if thirty years with Chicago weren't enough, Jason takes us through that experience from the rumors, the auditions, the close race, getting it, the faux pax, righting it big time, the glories of it, the joys, to why he left three decades later. We started with his dad, the iconic bassist, Jerry Scheff, who's played with countless legends and is one himself. Jason told amazing stories about Jerry and the Fifth Dimension, Elvis, and The Doors. Mind-blowing, and fantastic! He spoke of some of his other champions and heroes, his mother, a singer, who made him a pro at 16, Elton John, Bobby Caldwell, Robert Lamm, getting sober, Bill Champlin, David Foster, Tamara Champlin, the all-stars Todd Rundgren, Christopher Cross, Micky Dolenz, and Joey Molland with whom he performed The Beatles White Album, my lord, do I want to see the replay of that! Generation Radio (I butchered that) the supergroup Jason put together with Jay DeMarcus of Rascal Flatts, with Deen Castronovo of Journey, who returned there, now replaced by superstar drummer Steve Ferrone. Jason spoke of his love and devotion to his beloved Tracy and their kids, the hardships and losses they've endured and weathered together, and they're great like for each other. Having just had the great good fortune to see Jason perform at Summerfest and then meet his bride, I got to witness this rockstar in action and then bear witness to what a fabulous couple they are. Jason and I talked for well over two hours and it felt like a minute. What a great, great, time, and… he sang… just a little, but still! I loved every moment and can't wait to hear about the next chapters, and hear and see them performed, as well. Already a legend when I was booking rock clubs in New York back in the days, I was in a daze and don't think we ever spoke, but I was always aware whenever he was around by the admiring ruckus surrounding him. There were a number of near misses through the years, finally meeting him at one of Steve Postell's gigs some years ago, and then at Will Lee's a few years later. I pounced, as is my wont. We had a great time on here in 2019- and broken Thanksgiving bread of late, and so look forward to sitting down again with this man who has sat behind innumerable rock heroes, and, is one hisself. Steve Ferrone was deemed the “Greatest Musician” by Tom Petty himself during a concert at the Royal Albert Hall in England. He is an English Drummer that has played with top artists in the music world. After the death of Tom Petty, he felt as if his years of touring and traveling were over until he got a call to be the drummer on John Mayer's tour. • Continuing to move forward. • Sitting at home drinking in the past wondering what he had done to offend people. • Dealing with sudden loss when Tom Petty died… No more private jets. • Then the phone rings. • Getting inducted to the Brighton Hall of Fame • The greatest award… Even better than a hall of fame. TIME-STAMPED SHOW NOTES: [4:16] Great relationships with other musicians. [9:10] Given gift of playing music. [16:52] Greatest musician I know.

Steve Ferrone found out early on just how important connections were. If it wasn't for his meeting with Phil Collins, his life could have gone in a very different direction. Steve is currently traveling on the road with 7-time Grammy winner, John Mayer playing all the top venues in the world, for example, recently they played multiple sold-out shows in Madison Square Garden. • Gigs dominoed from playing with Clapton then George Harrison back to Clapton. • Don't worry, you won. • At 43, the big personal change. TIME-STAMPED SHOW NOTES: [2:05] Chatting with Eric Clapton. [5:58] Decided to stop drinking. [7:28] Felt like life was over.
In 1992, Steve Ferrone joined Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers as their new drummer and kept that job for the next 25 years. He grew up in Brighton, England, and started drumming at a young age. By 12 he was playing professionally in 18 and over pubs. In his career, he has played with almost every famous musician and singer out there, and in every major venue in the world. Now, in addition to performing professionally, Steve is the host of “The New Guy Show” on Tom Petty radio. Even after 25 years of being part of the Heartbreakers, he was still known as the new guy. • Learning how to play vs. learning how to be a professional. • Starting to learn music late in life. • You can't go past your fundamentals. • Wasn't afraid to ask, “What is that?” • Writing grooves out. • Bette Midler/Chaka Khan/Local 802/Duran Duran • He learned from giants – It elevated his playing. TIME-STAMPED SHOW NOTES: [10:17] Five favorite venues. [18:00] 12 years old, playing in pubs. [26:18] Teach you how to read music.

What a pleasure it was to have Hamish Stuart as a guest on my show. Hamish is probably most famous for his singing with the Average White Band "Let's Go Around Again" and "Pick Up The Pieces". An absolute Legend and he tealks about his life growing up in music and where the music industry took him. Born in Glasgow, Scotland, Stuart attended Queens Park School in Glasgow and left to form his first professional band 'The Dream Police'. He recorded a couple of singles with the Dream Police, before he was invited to join the recently formed Average White Band (AWB) in June 1972. A member of AWB from 1972 to 1982, he went on to work with Aretha Franklin, Chaka Khan and David Sanborn. He wrote Atlantic Starr's 1986 hit "If Your Heart Isn't in It" and songs for Smokey Robinson, Jeffrey Osborne, George Benson and Diana Ross. Stuart joined Paul McCartney's band (where he switched between guitar and bass as necessary with McCartney) for McCartney's 1989 comeback album, Flowers in the Dirt, and appearing on several other albums and McCartney's world tours of 1989 and 1993. In 2006, Stuart toured as the bass player with Ringo Starr & His All-Starr Band. He joined Starr again for a 2008 tour, where he performed "Pick Up The Pieces" and "Work to Do".[2] He once again toured with the band in 2019 playing "Pick Up the Pieces", "Work to Do", and "Cut the Cake". In 2007, he produced and appeared as a guest vocalist on the album All About the Music, by The AllStars collective. In July 2015, Stuart reunited with his AWB bandmates Malcolm "Molly" Duncan and Steve Ferrone to form The 360 Band. This is in essence one third of the original Average White Band. They released an album titled Three Sixty in 2017 and have been performing live together along with supporting musicians. **Explicit Permission to play the interview and his songs from his album "Sooner Or Later" All Rights Reserved.** --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/neil-clark10/message
On this episode of Roger the Wild Child Show, we are joined by former Nashville recording Artist, Chad Brock, and singer/songwriter Tom Yankton!CHAD BROCK In high school, Brock played football & was offered a post-secondary scholarship to play sports. He turned down the scholarship, however, as his experiences in the school choir had convinced him to pursue a singing career. Brock moved to Nashville, Tennessee, to follow this dream, but he met with little success at first. In 1994, he signed a record deal with Warner Bros. Records, but he did not release any music for over three years.Warner Brothers and WCW got together to cross-promote Brock, and he trained at World Championship Wrestling's training facility, the WCW Power Plant. Chad wrestled for WCW from 1994 -1996, until an injury forced him to retire. He also appeared at several WCW events in 1999, where he was briefly involved in an angle with Curt Hennig. In 1998, Brock released his debut single, "Evangeline", which peaked at number 51 on the Billboard Hot Country Singles & Tracks (now Hot Country Songs) charts. That song's follow-up, the ballad "Ordinary Life", went on to become Brock's first major hit,[1] peaking at number 3 on the same chart, as well as number 39 on the Billboard Hot 100. Following that song's success, Brock released his self-titled debut album. Its third and final single, "Lightning Does The Work", reached number 19 in 1999.Brock's fourth chart single was a rewrite of Hank Williams, Jr.'s signature song "A Country Boy Can Survive", a number 2 hit for Williams in 1981. Chad's version, which featured Williams and George Jones, was entitled "A Country Boy Can Survive (Y2K Version)", was re-written with lyrics pertaining to the Year 2000 problem (abbreviated Y2K). The song served as the first single from Brock's 2000 album Yes!. Its second single was the title track, which went on to become Brock's only number-one Billboard hit,[1] as well as a number 22 hit on the Hot 100 chart. The third and last single from Yes! ("The Visit") peaked at number 21.2001 saw the release of Brock's 3rd and final album for Warner Bros.. Entitled III, it was less successful than its predecessor. III had only one chart entry in "Tell Me How", which failed to make the Top 40. This album also reprised Brock's three highest-charting singles ("Yes!", "Ordinary Life" and "Lightning Does The Work"). Shortly thereafter, he signed to Broken Bow Records, then a newly formed independent label. Although he released five singles for Broken Bow, four of which made the charts, he never put out a full album.TOM YANKTONTom Yankton's rowdy, high-energy, multi-million streaming, wildly-talented brand of award-winning, party crowd entertainment wouldn't be complete without, 1.) The back story that starts in Hot Springs, Arkansas and 2.) The extensive resume that includes opening for Luke Bryan, The Brothers Osborne, Walker Hayes, and Riley Green, performing on Jimmy Kimmell Live, The Today Show, The Grand Ole Opry, The Academy Of Country Music Awards, The Rolling Stones “Zip Code” Tour, and writing songs for “Bad Moms Christmas,” Lifetime Network's "Love At First Flight," and Netflix's “Sex Education,” and working with Legendary artists, such as Rock & Roll Hall Of Famers-Chicago, along with Christina Aguilera, Collin Raye, RaeLynn, Rascal Flatts, Doug Supernaw, Waylon Payne, Russ Taff, and Jason Crabb. Steve Ferrone has recorded and/or toured as a drummer with numerous high profile acts, including Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers from 1994 until now, Average White Band for eight years, George Harrison, Duran Duran, Stevie Nicks, Slash, Chaka Khan, Eric Clapton, The Bee Gees, Johnny Cash, Bryan Ferry, Peter Frampton, Whitney Houston, Pat Metheny, Marcus Miller, Steve Winwood, Paul Simon, and Jaco Pastorius – and that's just some of the acts he's been with! This was a blast of a conversation because Steve has so many great stories. He talks about his work with The Average White Band, Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers, Chaka Khan, Eric Clapton, George Harrison, and Michael Jackson. He also talks about some of his favorite bass players and more! Steve was actually a tap dancer at a young age. He was only twelve years old, and he shares how that inadvertently led to his first drumming gig. He explains how he found his sound, as a drummer, and the journey that led him to where he is today. Despite the fact that Steve has played drums on a lot of classic hits from artists such as Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers (with whom he has worked for more than twenty-five years!), Chaka Khan, Michael Jackson, and so many others, he definitely maintains a certain level of modesty, presenting the possibility that a hit with which he was involved “was already a hit and I got to play on it.” He also discusses the advent of the drum machine and electronic drums and how they initially made some drummers panic thinking that their work would become obsolete. He shares his own feelings on electronic drums and gives examples of times when he maintained the value of organic drums over electronic ones, such as when he worked on “Earth Song” by Michael Jackson. Andy and Steve also talk a little about the COVID-19 pandemic and how it affected musicians, with Steve detailing what his life and profession have been like ever since the breakout of the pandemic. He remains optimistic and hopeful that an end to the pandemic is in sight but also clarifies that he is grateful for that which he has been able to hold onto in his life. Having worked with so many high profile musicians, Steve definitely has a lot of great stories to share and makes for a very fascinating guest on the podcast! As a bonus, you can hear “Jump Back”, an unreleased track I wrote with British singer Clive Griffin. The London session was as brilliant as you'd expect with Steve Ferrone on drums, Nathan East on Bass, Jess Bailey on Clavinet and Greg going absolutely bonkers on the piano. It was sounding so great, I threw off my professional producer's hat and let the session turn into a big time jam. Enjoy!!! “What is Melody” ©2007 Niles Smiles Music (BMI), piano, Steve Hamilton. “Jump Back” by Richard Niles & Clive Griffin ©1998 Niles Production (PRS)/Marylodge Music
Doc Crotzer joins me as my guest for this episode of You, Me and An Album to discuss Tom Petty's second solo album, Wildflowers. Doc is a director, producer and editor who has worked on movies and on numerous TV series, including Glee, Sons of Anarchy and Good Behavior. In addition to discussing Tom Petty, we talked about Doc's latest movie project, his role in writing and performing a theme song for a fantasy baseball podcast and his “appearance” in Rookie of the Year.A couple of corrections: My apologies to Steve Ferrone for mispronouncing his name. Also, I made a comparison between Only a Broken Heart and R.E.M.'s Diminished, but the song I meant to compare it to was actually Parakeet, also from R.E.M.'s Up album. Thanks to Doc for digging up these Tom Petty clips that were referenced on the show!Tom Petty on SNL (featuring Dave Grohl): https://www.facebook.com/nashvilleguitarstore/videos/throwback-to-1994-snl-tom-petty-featuring-dave-grohl-on-drums-you-dont-know-how-/10155876812454382/https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SYhYOdsqK5Y&feature=youtu.beFoo Fighters' version of Honey Bee: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hixoRjxKIQsSocial Distance Sessions (Good Vibrations): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hWCkCSO8h9I0:59 Doc joins the show1:19 Doc's connection to Rookie of the Year3:13 The movie that Doc is working on now4:40 Why Doc wrote a theme song for a fantasy baseball podcast7:26 Which three underrated albums does Doc recommend?9:41 Why did Doc choose Wildflowers for this episode?11:01 Al had issues with Tom Petty's music when Wildflowers came out16:39 Are Tom Petty solo albums really all that different from his albums with the Heartbreakers?18:42 Wildflowers is a whole different album when the title track doesn't come first Track by track breakdown (not in order)19:45 Wildflowers22:11 You Don't Know How It Feels26:38 Find a Friend29:10 House In The Woods/Cabin Down Below31:30 Honey Bee37:00 Time to Move On39:27 You Wreck Me42:09 It's Good to Be King47:19 Only a Broken Heart51:07 Don't Fade on Me52:06 Hard on Me53:08 A Higher Place54:21 Crawling Back to You56:56 Wake Up Time
