Researchers from Moorfields Eye Hospital and University College London (UCL) have identified markers in the blood that may predict which Glaucoma patients are likely to continue losing vision despite treatment that aims to lower the pressure that causes their sight loss. Professor Ted Garway-Heath tells In Touch more about their clinical trial. On In Touch, we've always tried to be careful not to raise false hopes about new eye treatments, but occasionally its too irresistible to not take a peek into the future and look at how modern technology might help us. Developments such as Artificial Intelligence are happening so rapidly, even in the world of eye care. Pete Thomas is the Executive Director of Digital Development at Moorfield's Eye Hospital and he tells In Touch about the application of AI which is already having an effect on the rate of diagnosis of eye conditions, and therefore the speed with which they can be treated.Presenter: Peter White Producer: Beth Hemmings Production Coordinator: David Baguley Website image description: Peter White sits smiling in the centre of the image and he is wearing a dark green jumper. Above Peter's head is the BBC logo (three separate white squares house each of the three letters). Bottom centre and overlaying the image are the words "In Touch" and the Radio 4 logo (the word Radio in a bold white font, with the number 4 inside a white circle). The background is a bright mid-blue with two rectangles angled diagonally to the right. Both are behind Peter, one is a darker blue and the other is a lighter blue.

Something a bit different to kick off 2024. This is a mini episode reflecting on how a stunning duet by Elvis Costello and Elton John introduced me to the wonderful music of David Ackles. They performed a beautiful version of Ackles' Down River on Spectacle, backed by James Burton, Allen Toussaint, Pete Thomas and Davey Faragher. In this episode, I look back at that performance and the career of David Ackles, who released four fine albums between 1968 and 1973.
In this new episode of the Pearls of Wisdom Podcast we speak to three wonderful people. Debbie Hickman, Pete Thomas and Joe Thomas Please listen and share this episode far and wide. Joe is running 100 miles to raise money for the MDS charity UK. His father Pete has recently been diagnosed with MDS. Donate to Joe's Just giving page here https://www.justgiving.com/page/joe-thomas-ndw100 You can find details of all the guests below: Pete Thomas Pete is a former Civil Servant who led operational teams and more recently headed up a number of HR Teams in the Treasury, Home Office and the former Department of International Trade. He retired after 43 years service following his MDS diagnosis. He now is a volunteer at MDS UK. He spends his free time, staying fit in the gym, travelling, learning spanish, climbing boulders and attempting to play golf. Joe Thomas I am a leveraged finance banker who works for Mizuho Financial Group in London. Outside of work, I spend time with my Dad when he's not staying fit in the gym, travelling, learning spanish, climbing boulders and attempting to play golf. You can give to he's Just Giving page that is raising funds for the MDS charity UK here https://www.justgiving.com/page/joe-thomas-ndw100 Debbie Hickman Debbie Hickman is currently Acting CEO of MDS UK. After nearly four decades as a business manager and entrepreneur, mostly in the bookselling and artisan food sectors, I sold the family businesses and embarked on a creative writing degree in 2018. Halfway through, and just a few weeks before lockdown, my husband Neil was diagnosed with intermediate-level MDS. Thankfully I discovered the charity, which proved to be a lifeline for us during the pandemic, especially as I was unable to accompany Neil to clinic appointments or visit him in hospital whilst he recovered from three separate bouts of neutropenic sepsis. Strangely for such a rare disease, my mum had also been diagnosed with low-risk MDS a few years before, but Neil's was considerably more complex. Tragically, we lost them both on the same day in August 2021. Raising awareness of MDS, promoting stem cell donation and optimising the care and support of those affected by blood cancers, are causes very close to the hearts of my family and friends. Toad the Wet Sprocket is an American alternative rock band formed in Santa Barbara, California, in 1986. The band at the time consisted of vocalist/guitarist Glen Phillips, guitarist Todd Nichols, bassist Dean Dinning, and drummer Randy Guss, who stopped touring in 2017 and left the band in 2020. Guss was replaced by drummer Josh Daubin, who had been supporting them as their drummer on recent tours. They had chart success in the 1990s with singles that included "Walk on the Ocean," "All I Want," "Something's Always Wrong," "Fall Down," and "Good Intentions." The band broke up in 1998 to pursue other projects. Although re-united periodically for short tours. In December 2010, the band announced their official reunion as a full-time working band and started writing songs for their first studio album of new material. That album would become New Constellation, followed by The Architect of the Ruin. Toad the Wet Sprocket's most recent full-length album, Starting Now, was released on August 27, 2021. As a solo artist, Glen Phillips released Abulum in 2000. In 2004, he released a long-awaited collaboration with Nickel Creek under the Mutual Admiration Society. The self-titled album was recorded in 2000 and featured songs written by Phillips alone and collaborative efforts with Sean and Sara Watkins, released on Sugar Hill Records. In 2005, Phillips released the critically acclaimed Winter Pays For Summer. The album included the radio single "Duck and Cover," but Phillips and the label would part ways due to creative differences. A compilation of six outtakes from that album was published as an EP titled Unlucky 7, the first track ("The Hole") featured in the second episode of the AMC television series Breaking Bad. Phillips released his third proper solo album, Mr. Lemons, in the spring of 2006. In January 2008, it was reported by Billboard that a new supergroup had formed. The ensemble gathered in Jim Scott's recording studio, and by September 2008, the collective settled upon the name Works Progress Administration (W.P.A.). In its octet configuration, WPA features Phillips, Sean Watkins (guitar), his sister Sara Watkins (fiddle), Benmont Tench (piano), Luke Bulla (fiddle), Greg Leisz (various), Pete Thomas (drums), and Davey Faragher (bass). The group also performs as a quintet featuring Phillips, Watkins, Bulla, and bassist Sebastian Steinberg. The results of the 2008 recording sessions were released as an album on September 15, 2009. Phillips has also completed an album with Neilson Hubbard and Garrison Starr under the band name, Plover, released on October 23, 2008. In 2009, Phillips was involved in the soundtrack of the film Imagine That. He covers The Beatles' song "I'll Follow the Sun." On April 5, 2018, Glen Phillips signed with Compass Records Group. His 2016 album, Swallowed by the New, was followed by There Is So Much Here in 2021. Keith & Geoff welcomed Toad the Wet Sprocket frontman Glen Phillips to Thunderlove Studio and had a delightful conversation about, but not limited to, disco, hippies, and mental health. Go figure. Rock and Roll is often associated with excess; and by the end of the seventies, this image was clearly in the air. Even the outsider, cool young artists of Stiff Records found themselves lured into its temptations. In the midst of Punk's musical revolution in England, stripping rock down its barest essentials and attitudes, a young Elvis Costello stepped into the spotlight with his own ironic take on rock and roll indulgence – “Pump It Up” – and in doing so, kicked off his own musical revolution; on which would take the form of New Wave and carry across the following decade. After watching Pete Thomas' “Finding Jack Charlton”, a comprehensive and detailed biographical documentary of the legendary football manager, Rob finds himself inspired to share some of the lessons Jack has learned through his extraordinary life. One of the standout lessons being you don't have to be abrasive to be an effective leader but you do need to be firm. KEY TAKEAWAYS To lead you have to express your own beliefs and values and have these actioned and followed throughout your team, organisation or business. This does not require you to be detached and distant however. You can still show care for your people and guide them gently and considerately. Keep your message simple and direct. People tend to avoid complexity so avoid over complicating concepts and issues. Try to focus on the positive traits in peoples characters and skills and overlook as much as possible any negativity that can be considered a triviality. Ignore minor irritants that crop up in your relationship with your team. BEST MOMENTS ‘That was one of Jack's maxims. He was by definitions simple and direct.' ‘We don't look for complexity. We have complexity thrust upon us by our society.' ‘The superpower of kindness. That's what Jack had in bucketloads.' ‘He created a team spirit by allowing people to be who they were.'
