John Fell Ryan returns to Wake the Dead to discuss one of the best movies ever made, Repo Man. Directed by Alex Cox in 1984, Repo Man is the only true 'punk rock' film. With humor, Alex Cox is able to show us a mirror to our insane society. Allowing us to laugh at the real horrors of the 1980s, a release valve of fear & angst packaged with a great soundtrack. Repo Man is like no other film, your favorite & mine. John Fell Ryan is an artist, film maker, musician, writer & father. John has been on the main nerve of the Kubrick discussion for years. He ran a blog titled 'KDK12' & he was featured in the documentary film Room 237 (2012). You will recall John revealed to us that The Shining (1980) synchronizes with itself when we mirror the film & project it on top of itself. Each projection at 50% opacity, one playing the film forwards & the other playing the film backwards. We are able to see much more information & our brains can process it in a totally new way. This was a major influence on Sean's thinking when creating the Fidelio Experiments, where we can dissect Eyes Wide Shut (1999) in a similar way. John is here for an informal discussion about Stanley Kubrick's work. Hopefully John will join us again someday to discuss Repo Man (1984). Please enjoy the conversation... Three weeks from now, give or take, Moseley Park will jump to the Mostly Jazz Funk and Soul Festival - a three-day event that will bring you exactly that: Jazz, Funk, and Soul. Some stellar acts are booked, and a whole host of up-and-coming and established local acts as well. I have listed some of the main names at the bottom of this post, but for full details, head over to the MoJazz website, which is pretty comprehensive. There's an awful lot that goes into organising an event like this, and I sat down with Festival Manager John Fell, to talk about some of the challenges. It's fascinating stuff, and the stories that have emerged over the past two very difficult years are compelling: acts that refused to use the stage entrance... acts that came back the next day because they enjoyed themselves so much.... embracing the local dance scene, and much more. There's more to read about on the companion blog page, and here are just a few links to follow. https://mostlyjazz.co.uk/ https://www.thespecials.com/ https://www.cameonation.com/ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fatback_Band https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Craig_Charles .

By any measure it’s a heritage-heavyweight, a blockbuster trail and a star specimen of Upper Hutt’s sparkling outdoorsy credentials. The Remutaka Cycle Trail is one of New Zealand’s Great Rides and the flagship section of this riveting circuit is indisputably the Remutaka Rail Trail, for the intimate experience with the Remutaka Incline. Built in 1878, this historic inter-provincial rail route between the Hutt Valley and Cross Creek, Featherston is now a politely graded 18 km walking and cycling track. Easily conquered by bike within two to three hours, I made my way to Kaitoke Summit Road in Upper Hutt, which is the official start point of the Remutaka Incline section.Under a bright blue sky and bathed in soft autumn sunshine, there were hordes of weekend cyclists and walkers striking out on this storied track, which many locals consider as their glorified open-air gym. After parking up the car, I hired a bike from Wildfinder, who operate a Kaitoke base adjacent to the trailhead, open from 10am- 6pm, weekends and public holidays. They’ve got a great range of mountain bikes and e-Bikes for hire, plus a shuttle service back from the Wairarapa to their Kaitoke base. As much as I’ve become immensely infatuated with e-Bikes, the Remutaka Incline’s oh-so-gradual gradient impelled me to go old-school and plump for a “manual” mountain bike, a super comfortable Trek mountain bike, with gel saddles, front suspension and ergonomic grips. www.wildfinder.co.nzPlus, Wildfinder kitted me out with a trusty helmet and a handlebar-mounted torch that you’ll definitely be switching on when traversing the pitch-black old railway tunnels. The first stretch of the trail ever so gradually hoists you up to the Summit of the Remutaka Ranges, blazing through the verdant grandeur of the Pakuratahi Forest, as the glistening Pakuratahi River burbles to your side. There are some idyllic picnic spots sprinkled along the way. The ascent from the Kaitoke side is so gradual, you’ll barely even notice the gradient, unlike the hellfire ride uphill from the Wairarapa side, where the 1 in 15 gradient is an unrelenting gut-busting ordeal – vividly reinforcing the prowess of those Fell engines, back in the day. From Kaitoke, the ride to the Summit is pepper-potted with a series of information panels, showcasing the revered railway heritage of this line. I learnt how the rail route was established in 1878 between the Hutt Valley and Featherston, hauling passengers up and down the steep incline between the Remutaka summit and Featherston for 77 years, until the opening of the Remutaka rail tunnel in 1955. The innovative Fell mountain railway system pulled trains up the formidably steep slope of the Incline. A tunnel was always the preferred option but couldn’t be afforded initially, so the 77 year 'temporary' solution was this steep mountain railway, to link the agricultural hinterlands with Wellington. In 1863, the English engineer John Fell had patented the first drive friction system, and it had worked on Mt Cenis in the European Alps.New Zealand chose Fell's system to traverse the 4.8 km Remutaka Incline – the third and last Fell system to be built. (You can visit Featherston's Fell Museum which houses the rebuilt H 199 - the only remaining Fell engine from the six that serviced the line.) From the late 1870s’, the railway captivated the attention of the community as a scenic mountain journey – until sparks from the locomotives caused fires and burnt off all the bush. Over time, traffic steadily grew and the incline operation, once a marvel, became a slow and expensive bottleneck. The trip up the incline was so gobsmackingly slow, passengers would regularly clamber on and off the moving trains.Today, the incline is regarded as a special part of New Zealand's history and is recognised as one of the significant railway heritage sites in the world. Highlights along the trail include the Pakuratahi Tunnel, built in 1876 and 73m long. This was the first c...

Event sponsor, Benjamin Cannon, of Spark Joy Music kicks off Part II of this special episode from the Hops & Hertz Festival at the Fountain Square Brewery. Ben works his way through the details of this incredible, inaugural, live music and craft beer festival dedicated to discovering great city talent, while putting up with a slightly inebriated Cowboy. The boys discuss their own recent discoveries in music, where they go to find music today, the Manson Family, and Jack White(the Jamie Jackson of Indy). Jeff Kelly joins the round table once again, along with one the best guitar pickers in the city, John Fell, to talk about The Graveyard Shift. Jeff also tells all you need to know about knitting(maybe too much). Fountain Square partner, Jeff Gibson, has a brew with the boys to tell all that’s going on and what to look forward to at the brewery. The day is rounded out nicely with the sweaty clan from Mr. Clit and the Pink Cigarettes after a rousing set on the inside stage. A great day of live music and always great beer at Fountain Square Brewery. The boys can’t wait to cover this fantastic event again next summer. Cheers! Shout outs in this episode include: Dietrich Jon; Chris Burch; Musical Family Tree; Square Cat Vinyl; Indy In-Tune and Radiothon; Mina & The Wondrous Flying Machine; Kammy’s Kause; and a special thanks to 800lb Gorilla for the use of their tune, Radboy, from their new album to end today’s show. Be sure to catch those cats live!
Modern music is full of self-professed doctors or "docs". But in the case DOCFELL & CO, the title is more than mere clever moniker. You seem the band's front man JOHN FELL is a real doctor - a general practitioner based where Cherokee country meets the Ozark mountains in Tahlequah, Oklahoma. Given his locale, it's hardly surprising the he and his band have taken up the pursuit of music which combines the rustic charms of Americana, Country and blues yet manages to sound contemporary as opposed to quaint. The band's latest EP DUST BOWL HEART is fueled by the very emptiness, loneliness and heartache that makes music of this sort resonate. LONESOMEVILLE opens like a depression era country-gospel recording yet finds it's footing as a country stomper that exhibits all of the lyrical characteristics of country music when you play it either forwards or backwards. In our humble opinion THE LESS I KNOW is the sort of thing that ought to be topping the Country music charts instead of whoever is at the top of it now. If you can get a bunch of active rock fans like us rooting for an outfit like DOCFELL & CO, then you've really done something.CHECK OUT THE PODCAST AT:http://www.rockwired.com/temporarysite/rockwiredprofiles691.mp3

… and so we kick over into a new year, 2015. I keep a black moleskin with all of my various projects, initiatives, goals, and hair-brained schemes in it. I'd say we got through quite a few last year, from a revamped website to some new equipment, and finally to building a makeshift stage and video studio down in the secret underground bunker we call "Indy In-Tune Studio B." This year, the goals are fewer, and possibly less-ambitious. Put simply, my goal this year is to be as busy as humanly possile. Specifically, I want to be at 250 podcasts, 50 mini concerts, and as much archived on-air fun as I can accumulate under the belt by this time next year. Why? Because it has not escape my attention that after 9 years, I should be coming up on episode #450, and in the past two years that veritable conucopia of weelkly shows that have popped up (Free Beer Express, Brother Brother, Chris Brake Show, DoIt Indy, et al.), and some of them are already approaching their 100th episode. That part of my brain that's ruled by numbers tells me that this is unacceptable. I am the longest-standing podcaster in Central Indiana, I should have an episode count that inspires awe. So if anything, as I've always said, I love the fact that shows like those come along, since they make me step up my game. 2015 kicks off with our third visit from the great Bashiri Asad, this time in support of his brand new release, "Bashiri Asad Presents the Gil Suite: A Toast to Gil Scott-Heron and Brian Jackson." This is an amazing album he has put together as part of his "Year of Tributes" (more on that during the interview) and features some top-notch talent from around our scene including, but not limited to, Brandon Meeks, Devon Ashley, Justin Brewer, Rob Dixon, Nick Gerlach, Max Allen, Phil Geyer, and Ashton Kleeman. He joined us in the studio with guitarist John Fell where he gave an impromptu acoustic set of numbers spaning all of his releases. How's that for kicking the year off with a bang? Links referenced in the show: Bashiri Asad can be found here: | | The first three tracks were recorded live on the air in the studio and are presented in their original raw format, just they way they aired -- mostly because I'm not a producer. Hello from the Plain! The last few weeks have flown by in a whirl of assessments and cushions, so this is just a quick update prior to the Postcard, which was recorded back in April. Woolsack Update The first two Listener Cushions are now assembled and stuffed and ready to make their way to London. Thank you all so much! The first cushion I think is made from a lot of Rowan British Breeds, and includes a square made in the US on the front.... and squares made in Australia on the back... The second cushion also has some "Made in Oz" squares, this time on the front.... Thanks to all the listeners who contributed! A Postcard from Oxford The music in this postcard is from the album The Oxford Ramble and is used with the kind permission of Magpie Lane .
