And visiting the new William Morris arts and crafts exhibition in York, which of course Charles has seen too.The duo comment on the recent announcement that Watermark Gallery in Harrogate is to close. They talk about why they'll be missed and how likely it is they can find new premises.Graham is suitably impressed by the best sound system he's ever heard at a prog rock event (Pink Floyd against Genesis) he gave at a talk at earlier this week - at the magnificent All Saints Church in Kirkby Overblow in Harrogate. How much money do famous Christmas songs make on Spotify? The weird thing about Procol Harum's number 1 hit A Whiter Shade of Pale (1967).Keep in touch with Two Big Egos in a Small Car:X@2big_egosFacebook@twobigegos

English/Irish composer and arranger Sean O'Hagan (Microdisney, Stereolab) is perhaps best known as the visionary behind The High Llamas, whose second album Gideon Gaye (1994) blended a healthy respect for the harmonic tableaus of both Brian Wilson and Steely Dan with a delicate UK pop sound reminiscent of his contemporaries such as Prefab Sprout. On the brand new High Llamas album, Hey Panda, (featuring guests including Fryars, and Bonny "Prince" Billy) O'Hagan has been absorbing many of the production tricks of contemporary hip-hip records from the likes of Tyler The Creator or Solange, while retaining most of the melodic tendencies that first endeared High Llamas' fans to his music. As you'll hear, O'Hagan cares deeply about keeping his ear to the ground for the new while honoring the past. It's a great conversation.  And Record Store Day co-founder Carrie Colliton returns after a highly successful Record Store Day 2024.  The Record Store Day Podcast is written, produced, engineered and hosted by Paul Myers, who also composed the theme music and selected interstitial music. In this episode we welcome revered High Llamas leader (and arranger to the hip and the mighty) Sean O'Hagan to Hammersmith and ask him about his life and times from Microdisney to new album Hey Panda. We hear about Sean's Luton childhood, his family's move back to Ireland, and his 1980 encounter with the late Cathal Coughlan — the Corkonian with whom he formed the brave and brilliant Microdisney. Their path through '80s pop via Rough Trade and Virgin, and their eventual unravelling at the end of the decade, is discussed with reference to the new BBC documentary The Clock Comes Down the Stairs. The birth of the High Llamas involves RBP's own Mark Pringle, who recalls his production work on the 1992 EP Apricots (a.k.a. Santa Barbara). The influence of Brian Wilson on the sound and aesthetic of 1994's Gideon Gaye and 1996's Hawaii leads to Sean's reminiscences of meeting the Beach Boys and (almost) producing them. A side story involves his amusing memories of backing another cult L.A. genius, Love's Arthur Lee, in London. After we've heard clips from Mike Quigley's 1969 audio interview with Carl Wilson, Mike Love, Al Jardine and Bruce Johnston, we return to the arc of the Llamas' story and ask Sean about the influence of contemporary R&B on the Llamas' Hey Panda. Finally, Mark and Jasper talk us out with quotes from the pieces they've most enjoyed adding to the RBP library over the preceding fortnight. Many thanks to special guest Sean O'Hagan. The High Llamas new album, Hey Panda, is out now; visit highllamas.com or your local record shop to get your hands on it. Pieces discussed: The High Llamas: You Can Call Me Alpaca, The High Llamas: Lo-fi Heaven, The High Llamas: A Different Breed, An Improbable History: Microdisney Interviewed, The Beach Boys audio, Ted Nugent Unleashes His Little Ball of Fire, Leonard Bernstein: Lenny's song and dance in Vienna, Lounging with Mr Williams, So why exactly does David Gray have this effect on women? and Terence Trent D'Arby: Neither Fish Nor Flesh.

Low Profile with Markly Morrison

Friend of the show Sean O'Hagan returns to the Low Profile to discuss “Hey Panda,” the first release from The High Llamas in eight years. When we last spoke in 2021, he had dropped the High Llamas moniker and forged a new path under his given name, embracing more contemporary influences.  In the years since, he's recruited Llamas new and old to reroute the course of the band he's led since the early ‘90s, and invited exciting guest performers to come along for the ride. “Hey Panda” is out on March 29th from Drag City Records. Today Sean explains the process that led to this album, collaborating with Bonnie Prince Billy and Fryars, recent production and arrangement work with other artists, and a bit of the contemporary music he's been getting into lately.

There are more than a few points when Hey Panda sounds like the work of an entirely different band. The songwriting is sharp as ever, but Sean O'Hagan gleefully pushes the High Llamas into new directions. It's an impressive accomplishment in itself more than three decades after the band's formed. O'Hagan was already a music industry vet by the time he founded the High Llamas in 1990, having spent the previous decade sharing songwriting credits for Rough Trade act, Microdisney.

"Cathal Coughlan Remembered: Somewhere Between Joe Gould And Lee Mavers" “The supreme question about a work of art,” James Joyce once wrote, "is out of how deep a life does it spring.” If you tried to plumb the fathoms for a measurable reading of the life of Cathal Coughlan—well, the depth finder would crack right in half. Coughaln's life has been a rich and textured affair and his talent is vast and incomprehensibly majestic. With his band Microdisney, The Cork -born musician put out several of the most affecting albums ever made. Efforts like The Clock Comes Down the Stairs in 1985 or the following year's Crooked Mile, are front to back classics. After he and his bandmate Sean O-Hagan dissolved Microdisney and O-Hagan went on to form the High Llamas, Coughlan fired up the Fatima Mansions—an aggressive, fiery and angular outfit, that played synth-laced alternative rock that churned away with grinding and brutal beauty. Viva Dead Ponies and Lost In The Former West are two personal favorites, but the fact is, I love every album in their discography. Over the course of his career Coughlan put out a series of brilliant solo albums, collaborated with the likes of comic Sean Hughes and British singer/songwriter Luke Haines, scored movies like The Last Bus Home and The Mapmaker, toured with U2, appeared onstage in a contemporary opera, and reformed Microdisney for a brief series of triumphant shows. His new album Song of Co-Aklan is a work of startling beauty and precision. Imbued with poetic invention and finesse, haunting melodies, riveting ballads and an unmistakable wisdom and pop grace, Coughlan has never sounded better. This is a deep and focused conversation that can't be encapsulated in a sentence or two—you just have to listen. But we do touch on Lee Mavers, friendship, Sting, the legend of Joe Gould, the vulnerability of solo shows and staying prolific during lockdown. Just in time for Christmas Eve, here is my gift to you all.  It's a holiday mixtape featuring artists who have been featured on Low Profile over the years!  This is definitely not a traditional Christmas mix, you're going to hear a lot of new songs with just a few tweaks to some old familiar tunes from the sort of esoteric artists you've come to expect from this show.  There's even a couple exclusives! This is an updated version of the physical cassette tape that I sent out to all the patreon supporters in December of 2020.  If you'd like to join their ranks and help support the show, please visit patreon.com/lowprofile and give whatever you can to keep this show on track.    The track listing for this episode is below.  And now, the play button!01.  Chris Mastheim “Christmastime is Here”   Nick Krgovich has released a bunch of holiday music under the pseudonym Chris Mastheim.  This is the lyrics to the Vince Guaraldi classic, set to a remix of the Twin Peaks theme song.  A homespun mashup, ready for your local grocery store's holiday playlist.   From the album Chris Mastheim Is Here. 02. Margo Guryan “I Don't Intend to Spend Christmas Without You”   This song isn't really about Christmas, rather about the 25th of December.   From the album 25 Demos. 03. Karl Blau “Dance of the Seaweed Kites”   From his dub cover album of Tchaikovsky, The Coconutcracker, this is a new interpretation of a holiday favorite for generations. 04. Cornershop ft TRWBADOR  “Every Year So Different” This somewhat melancholy tune at least tries to brighten things up in its refrain.  For me, it's all about Cornershop frontman Tjinder Singh's ever-present, not-so-secret weapon: the gift of groove.05. Larry Norman “Christmastime”  Christian rock's original badass' scathing commentary on commercialism, resounding like a long-haired Linus Van Pelt and rocking out like Marc Bolan.   From the album So Long Ago in the Garden. 06. Jib Kidder “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.”   As Sean Schuster-Craig puts it, he released his 2003 Xmas album “into any left out pair of shoes left out” at the radio station where he worked at the time.07. Gary Wilson “Sled Ride Tonight” A melancholy love song from his album It's Christmas with Gary Wilson.08. Amps For Christ “Cherry Tree Carol” This is an old folk song about Joseph being a total dick to the Virgin Mary, and then getting a sick burn. From the Kill Rock Stars LP The Oak in the Ashes.09.  Cody Trout Band “Can't Wait for Christmas”   The band Heatwarmer, incognito.  The lyrics say it all.10. Steve Hindalong and Chris Colbert (AKA Skinny and Crisco Bear) “Tis the Season of Excess”   According to Steve, “the skinny Santa's sort of the anti-Santa.  Instead of ‘what you you want, little boy or little girl'… he admonishes everybody for their excessiveness.”  Steve Hindalong has won multiple Dove Awards for his work in Christmas music, and this is not one of those songs. From the 1996 compilation Christmas in Heaven. 11. Swamp Dogg “Santa's Just a Happy Fat Fart”   Father Christmas really seems to have it made, not that I'm jealous or anything, but… From the album An Awful Christmas and a Lousy New Year,12. Klaus Nomi “Silent Night” From the so-called “unfinished opera” Za Bakdaz, here's a particularly lively dance version of a traditional hymn from the late space diva Klaus Nomi13. Gretchen Christopher “Christmas is You” After Gretchen Christopher, chanteuse of the Fleetwoods, recorded her interview for Low Profile outdoors on the deck, Andrew Ebright returned to her home and recorded this performance of one of her most recent songs exclusively for the show.  14. Sean O'Hagan “Kabon's Christmas” In much of Sean's music, particularly the High Llamas, it's not unusual to hear the sound of sleigh bells no matter the topic.  This tune is the only one I can think of that mentions them by name.  15. Julian Koster “Hark The Herald Angels Sing” The Music Tapes frontman accompanies himself on nothing but sleigh bells and musical saw.  In other words, metal AF.  From his album The Singing Saw at Christmastime.16. Cory Ledet “C'est temps noel” Zydeco dynamo Corey Ledet gets bilingual on us in this holiday original, burning up the keys on his accordion! 17. Ashley Eriksson “It's Cold Outside” “Thinking about sound and vision.  Honey, it's cold outside.” Recorded on a Yamaha PSR-37 keyboard.  (Exclusive track)18. Miles Davis (vox by Bob Dorough) “Blue Xmas (To Whom it May Concern)” More critique on the commercialism that creeps in around the end of the year from our hero Bob.   From the Miles Davis album Sorcerer

Season 4 Finale: The incomparable Sean O'Hagan's first major band was the Irish 1980s pop group Microdisney. After that group disbanded, he started recording with his next project, the High Llamas, who released some of the most beautiful pop music of the last 30 years. This is a song “The Hot Revivalist” from their 1996 album Hawaii. Recently, he has dropped the High Llamas moniker in favor of his own name. The latest Sean O'Hagan album is “Radum Calls, Radum Calls.” No, there's not an echo in here. Sean and I speak about the stylistic transitions between his projects, joining the band Stereolab, working with Bonnie Prince Billy, how he came to be one of the today's most in-demand musical arrangers, his recent bout with cancer, and his love of soul music. After the interview, he shares an exclusive recording he and his daughter Livvy made specifically for this episode, and I share my gratitude for all the terrific people who contributed to this amazing season. Sean spoke to me from his home in England earlier this year. Thanks to Taylor W. Rushing for this episode's illustration, along with the rest of the fourth season!Find his work at taylorwrushing.com or on IG @twrushingFind all previous episodes of Low Profile and expanded content at lowprofilepodcast.com

“Sparkle Up” Raised in Cork, Sean O'Hagan got his start with the beloved Irish indie outfit Microdisney in 1980. Microdisney put out five marvelous albums in eluding The Clock Comes Down the Stairs and Crooked Mile, before calling it a day in 1988. Two years later O'Hagan put out the High Llamas solo album and then he put together a band of the same name. Atmospheric, harmonic, melodic and rife with texture and nuance, the work of the High Llamas summons the musical complexity of everyone from Brian Wilson to Ennio Morricone. Therese's even a dash of XTC in there. The High Llamas' brand of summer psychedelia summons the surf, the summer the joy and isolation of island life and the complex contrasts of any coastal city where high rises and blindingly beautiful beaches occupy the same space. The High Llamas have put out ten stellar records, including Gideon Gaye, Hawaii, Santa Barbara, and Here Come the Rattling Trees, and you would think that would keep O'Hagan busy enough, but his CV proves otherwise. He's collaborated with everyone from Will Oldham to Cornelius and not only was he a member of Stererolab in the early '90s, he's appeared on many of their albums. A producer, a gifted guitarist, and a real sonic architect, O'Hagan is intuitive, instinctive and blessed with the kind of musical aptitude that ranks him among the very best. www.highllamas.com www.bombshellradio.com

"Somewhere Between Joe Gould And Lee Mavers" “The supreme question about a work of art,” James Joyce once wrote, "is out of how deep a life does it spring.” If you tried to plumb the fathoms for a measurable reading of the life of Cathal Coughlan—well, the depth finder would crack right in half. Coughaln’s life has been a rich and textured affair and his talent is vast and incomprehensibly majestic. With his band Microdisney, The Cork -born musician put out several of the most affecting albums ever made. Efforts like The Clock Comes Down the Stairs in 1985 or the following year’s Crooked Mile, are front to back classics. This is a deep and focused conversation that can’t be encapsulated in a sentence or two—you just have to listen. But we do touch on Lee Mavers, friendship, Sting, the legend of Joe Gould, the vulnerability of solo shows and staying prolific during lockdown. In this episode we are joined by self-professed "failed musician" and pasta-sauce mogul Loyd Grossman, OBE, to wax nostalgic about the most important years of his illustrious career: those he spent as a contributor to Fusion, Rolling Stone and other American music papers. Loyd reminisces very amusingly about seminal late '60s shows at the Boston tea party, before explaining how he moved to London and reinvented himself as a British national treasure on TV and in every kitchen in the country. He also recounts how he came to play guitar, three times a year, with Jethro Tull. After a digression on the sad passing of Fairport Convention's original singer Judy Dyble, Loyd joins his hosts in hearing clips from a 1982 audio interview with Queen's Brian May in which that poodle-headed plank-spanker describes, among other things , working with David Bowie on the classic 'Under Pressure'. Barney drags Loyd into a discussion of the wrath heaped upon his compatriots the (Dixie) Chicks, whose new album Gaslighter affords the opportunity to examine the close links between country music and hyper-patriotism. Loyd turns out to be a country fan and gives a special thumbs-up to the Chicks' defiant 2006 song 'Not Ready To Make Nice'. Mark brings the episode to the boil with remarks on new library pieces such as Lillian Roxon's 1966 review of James Brown at Madison Square Garden, Roy Carr's day out in Hyde Park in summer 1970 watching Pink Floyd and Kevin Ayers, and David Keeps meeting Madonna at the Hard Rock Café.
