NYC's top developer Two Trees Managing Director David Lombino joins the pod to discuss their work on Williamsburg Brooklyn's premier waterfront. Two Trees is a Brooklyn-based, family-owned real estate development firm founded in 1968. Two Trees has owned, managed, and developed a portfolio worth more than $4B in real estate, owning and managing more than 4,000 apartments, 3 million square feet of commercial and industrial real estate, and most notably developing one of the most important waterfronts in New York City, Domino Park, Domino Sugar Factory, and their new project known as the River Ring, Two Trees' Other Eye-Catching Project on the Williamsburg Waterfront and a development site which was formally owned by ConEdison and used as an oil tank storage facility. Two Trees purchased the 11-acre Domino site in 2012 for $185 million, and over the past decade has demolished 27+ buildings and cleared the site for rezoning, excavation & development. Most recently, Two Trees has been in the news for opening up The Refinery, a fifteen-story, 460,000 square-foot office space within an industrial brick structure originally completed in 1884 which then housed the factory & production of sugar for Domino. The Refinery is set to redefine the standard for commercial buildings in New York City, offering world-class workspaces and amenities, while preserving the site's rich history and embracing sustainability. Fun Fact: Michael has a friend group named "Red Sauce Gang". The gang meets once a quarter and tries out various restaurants around the city. Hi gang. You ever notice how every generation, in every big city, seems to have a moment when the scene that defined them — the music venues, artists' lofts, dive bars, and misfit inhabitants that collectively forged a cultural zeitgeist — is declared dead? Think: The closure of CBGB in Manhattan, the arrival of Erewhon in Silver Lake, the memeification of Berghain in Berlin. The phenomenon raises some interesting questions: Which came first, the predatory hand of late capitalism, or the generation aging into acquiescence? Are these collapses inevitable, and if so, are they truly as dire as people say they are?So today, we're talking about scenes — how they start, the conditions that make them possible, and why, to the chagrin of so many successive generations of musicians and music fans, they inevitably all come to an end. Our guest, Jesse Rifkin, actually studies this stuff for a living: He's the founder of Walk on the Wild Side Tours NYC, a company that gives walking tours chronicling how different New York City neighborhoods — and factors like cheap rent, geographical proximity, and changing residential and nightlife laws — gave rise to era-defining music scenes like punk, post-punk, hip-hop, disco, and ‘90s and ‘00s indie rock. Of course, he also explores how those scenes helped fuel the process of gentrification that would eventually lead to their own undoing — and what arises, or doesn't arise, in their aftermath. His new book, This Must Be the Place: Music, Community, and Vanished Spaces in New York City (out July 11 via HarperCollins) examines how that story played out in Downtown Manhattan and North Brooklyn over a 60-year period where we see this process play out over and over again. It starts with the 1960s West Village folk scene (à la Bob Dylan and Buffy Sainte Marie playing at packed coffee houses in an area of the city that is now pretty much synonymous with NYU and expensive gyms). And it ends with the 2010s Williamsburg Brooklyn scene, where our millennial-aged listeners remember frequenting venues like Death by Audio and 285 Kent. (Emilie sure does — it was her life for a while.) In his work as an NYC music historian, Jesse noticed a pattern: New Yorkers are always complaining that the city is “over,” and if you ask them when it “ended,” they usually say that happened around the time they hit 35 or 37, precisely at the moment when most of us get a bit tired of going out to parties every night. The book, he says, is an attempt to reframe our understanding of scenes as bygone golden ages made possible by once-in-a-generation artistic geniuses. He wants us to understand that scenes are a product of the specific historical and geographical circumstances in which they arise — and, even more importantly, that of ordinary people figuring out how to tap into the unique opportunities those circumstances afford. He joins us to discuss the geographical history of downtown NYC music, how the internet has transformed how scenes form and broadcast themselves to the world, and what the new downtown scene, centered around a couple blocks in Chinatown, tells us about the moment in New York history — and perhaps culture at large — that we're living through now. Listen to an insightful discussion about JBG Smith's Digital Infrastructure Platform being deployed at National Landing , VA directly from JBGS' Vardahn Chaudhry, Vice President Smart Cities & Digital Infrastructure and Adam Rashid, Senior Vice President .U.S. Sen. Mark R. Warner (D-VA) said “I am thrilled to see this collaboration of leading private sector organizations to promote 5G deployment. American competitiveness in the deployment of 5G networks – and innovation in the emerging technologies 5G unlocks – remain key to our national and economic security interest. As a proud Virginian, I am excited to see National Landing emerge as our first 5G community – and I look forward to wider deployment across the Commonwealth. This collaboration can be a blueprint for how digital infrastructure is deployed, and I am heartened by the prospects of the innovation this may unlock to advance our country's competitiveness globally.” National Landing is a submarket nearly the size of Williamsburg Brooklyn, and an existing office density greater than downtown Austin, TX. The submarket is in Arlington, VA and is home to Amazon's HQ2 and Virginia Tech's $1 billion STEM innovation campus. At full build-out National Landing will consist of over 30 million SF of mixed-use real estate, including office, residential, retail, public parks, and multi-modal transportation options. JBGS owns or controls nearly 70% of the existing and developable real estate in this submarket. JBGS is deploying a robust digital infrastructure platform across National Landing that is purpose-built to stimulate innovation.National Landing digital infrastructure platform will be the first of its kind in the nation and will be a blueprint for innovation districts across the globe going forward. The component parts of the platform include:Fiber – Redundant/ubiquitous fiber with pre-wired fiber connections to nearly all buildings, public areas, and street furniture.Edge Data Centers – Two urban edge data centers, acting as easy on-ramps to the cloud, locations for edge computing, and hubs for carriers & data aggregation.Ubiquitous outdoor & Indoor 5G (MmWave and Mid-band) – True 5G at the mid and high band, allowing for Massive IoT Connection, Multi-gigabit speeds, and ultra-reliable low latency across the submarket.Private Licensed Spectrum – JBGS controls 70MHz of private CBRS mid-band spectrum and will offer it to innovative users to enable private 5G networks for testing and scaling products on private secure cellular wireless networks.Taken together, the JBGS digital infrastructure platform enables and unlocks the potential of the 4th Industrial Revolution and industries including Internet of Things (IoT), Artificial Intelligence, Cyber Security, and Cloud/Edge computing. While other innovation districts have focused on building clusters for traditional “placed-based” innovation, in National Landing we are combining traditional place-based innovation with the digital infrastructure required for the industries that are at the forefront of our nation's economic growth, competitiveness, and national security. With JBGS' digital infrastructure platform as the foundation for innovation for industry 4.0, JBGS is inviting, creating, and curating partnerships with key technology ecosystem participants to accelerate innovation in this city of the future.

Have you ever been somewhere and saw someone being their truest, most authentic, genuine self where you just knew and felt they were living their purpose and passion? Where it hit you so hard that it gave you confidence and inspired you to also live your truth? Well this is exactly what happened one day when I was walking through Williamsburg Brooklyn with some friends and saw Greg Banks performing. I've never seen so many people stop dead in their tracks and be so enamored by a street performance. Greg is one of the most authentic, loving, and beautiful souls I have ever met. I'm grateful and excited to be sharing our conversation with you. IG: @gregbanksmusic@concertontheblockwww.gregbanksmusic.com

This video is part of a research project to document the way Hasidim came to America after the war and turned Williamsburg into an insular religious enclave.Nelly Grussgott was born in 1930 in Berlin. In 1940, she and her mother fled nazi Germany for NYC, but her father could not make it out. Although Nelly and her mother were relatively modern, in 1946 her mother remarried a very pious Hasidic man, Moshe Nigreshel. The couple, along with Nelly, moved to the Williamsburg part of Brooklyn. There, Nelly's mother was expected to adopt rigid Hasidic customs like shaving her golden locks. This Nelly's mother did for life, but Nelly herself could never do it, and she struggled to understand her mother's path. Nelly moved out of Williamsburg when she got married, but her mother remained in the neighborhood until her death in 1990.Many thanks to Nelly for the lovely conversation and for sharing her memories. Please subscribe to this channel.Follow my blog on Hasidic Williamsburg at friedavizel.com/blogFor the video version of this podcast click here.

TRUE HOUSE STORIES™ W/ DANNY TENAGLIA SPECIAL SHOW 006 - PART 1 Danny Tenaglia starts his beginnings in Williamsburg Brooklyn listening to Motown, Rock and Philly International sounds that was being played on the radio during that era. Born in the 1960's and one of the younger of his siblings he lived through the musical changes of the1970s and music to him was everything. With his aunt inspiring him with her piano playing he tries to learn different instruments but he finds it is not for him. So, he starts to work out on how to be a DJ. Through his older brother he is able to start playing at a neighborhood bar with a dance floor and this is around 1975-1976. His older cousin brings an 8-Track tape mixed by Queens DJ Paul Casella, this is where Danny decides to call the number on there to reach out to him and asks to meet him. Paul becomes an important mentor by showing Danny the ropes of what it is to be a DJ from mixing and hunting for the right music at certain record shops in Brooklyn. Listen to Danny share how his first jobs experience as a teen. © 2021 True House Stories™ by Lenny Fontana [LCS Productions INC.]
“Sometimes it’s the sea, other times the mountains, often it was the forest, the city, the plain too, I’ve flirted with the plain too, I’ve given myself up for dead all over the place, of hunger, of old age, murdered, drowned, and then for no reason, of tedium, nothing like breathing your last to put new life in you…” Texts for Nothing, Samuel Beckett The Sea The Mountain The Forest The City The Plain is written by Matthew Freeman. The play was originally produced in October of 2019 at the Brick Theater in Williamsburg Brooklyn under the direction of David Cote. The play was performed by Robert Honeywell. Sound Design was by Chris Chappell, Lighting Design by Nicholas Houfek and Scenic Design by Kerry Lee Chipman. The stage manager was Jodi Witherall. What you are about to hear is from a live performance recorded by Daniel McKleinfeld. This is not pristine audio: it was recorded with a mic designed for record keeping, not broadcast. While we’re aware this is an era of audio made with perfection and care, we hope you’ll enjoy the sound for its imperfect flavor, and appreciate the rare feeling of overhearing a performance as it was performed.

On this week’s show we will visit another great Brooklyn neighborhood, Williamsburg. My guests will be Jeremy Wilcox, Founder and Owner of Custom NYC Tours, and Elisa Seeger, real estate agent at Triplemint. Segment 1 Jeff introduces the first guest of the show Jeremy Wilcox, who talks about his origins, his initial interest in his current profession and what he hopes to do with his NYC tours. The Williamsburg conversation begins with Jeremy explaining how the neighborhood got its name. They then talk about its Native American and Colonial history continuing into the Revolutionary War. Then punctuating it in the mid-nineteenth century when Williamsburg started to establish itself as a town, briefly touching on now-repurposed breweries previously built by German immigrants as well as the industrial development of the area. Segment 2 Jeremy informs the audience about the different tours offered by Custom NYC Tours and the possibility of virtual tours in the near future. He continues the Williamsburg conversation talking about the various manufacturers and businesses established in the late-nineteenth and early-twentieth century, immigrant communities that settled in the area’s early history, and how it came to be labeled at one point, the most densely populated neighborhood in New York City. Jeremy then closes the segment talking about the negative reputation Williamsburg earned before its reformation in recent years. Segment 3 Jeff introduces the second guest of the show Elisa Seeger, who talks about ALD (Adrenoleukodystrophy), which took the life of her son, the passing of Aidan’s Law in the New York legislature and soon taking the case to Congress, and the establishment of the Aidan Jack Seeger Foundation, Jeff also inquiring about her career up to this point, specifically her real estate business. Segment 4 Elisa tells listeners the modern vibe of Williamsburg and what she loves the most about the community, also delving into the changes that she’s observed living there for the last eighteen years, going into specifics about what she likes and dislikes about these changes. She also remarks about a few certain landmarks of the neighborhood that she loves in particular and gives out advice for people hoping to open a business in Williamsburg.

In the late 1990s and early 2000s, there was a lawless environment on the other side of the Williamsburg Bridge that connects the New York boroughs of Brooklyn and Manhattan. Gentrification and the aftermath of 9/11 made the Lower East Side undesirable for burgeoning young musicians, and Williamsburg with its industrial collapse and empty buildings stood waiting. Cisco Bradley of the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn speaks with me today about his research into the rise and decline of the Williamsburg music scene. Take a look at his related website: https://jazzrightnow.com/ This discussion is in anticipation of his talk on the subject entitled "Pirate Radio and Bohemian Cafés: The Rise of the Williamsburg Scene in Brooklyn" at the Guelph Jazz Festival Colloquium this week. Hear Dynasty Electric, Gold Sparkle Band, Mary Halvorson and Jessica Pavone, as well as Memorize the Sky, recorded live at Read Café. This episode originally aired on Wednesday September 14th at 7pm on CFRU 93.3FM in Guelph Ontario. Sound It Out airs new episodes every second Tuesday at 5pm.
GRP 36-On this episode I have Tu Lam ret Special Forces SGM, and owner of Ronin Tactics back on the show. Tu is a martial artist, hand to hand combat instructor, and a blade expert. We are hosting ringed blade seminars here in New York City the first weekend of August. Sat August 6th will be held at Cross Fit Giant in Edgewater NJ. We’re hosting two sessions per day. The first will be from 1-4 pm, and the second from 5-8 pm. Day 2 will be held at Brooklyn Athletic Club in Williamsburg Brooklyn same time slots. On this episode we discuss some of the methodology, and how Tu has evolved as a martial artist during his 22-year career as an operator. Below is an excerpt form the episode John Hendricks: When you talk about training the blurred area’s and I was out in Colorado I saw the way you were flowing, and I noticed you have the same philosophy for handling a pistol, handling a rifle, handling a blade. Is that a similar philosophy without giving away too much information, if your entering a room you have your sector of the room to secure, but at the same time if you enter a room your veering off to the left, but there’s a guy on the right I’m sure you guys have some type of methodology to where you can get him even though he’s in your peripherals. Tu Lam: Yeah its funny you say that. In CQB when I first started my training in counter terrorism when we explosive breach, and enter a room each one of us as a guy on the teams we move into a certain point in the room. There’s going to be times when a guy should have gone left, and he went right. Things happen in combat. As a senior guy, as a martial artist, as a commando you have to be able to process that data. Like water, move. He should have gone right, and he gone left your able to process that data and go right. Picking up those gaps when it needs to be picked up. It’s the same with fighting. If you throw a punch, and I parry that punch and you throw another you leave an opening because I parried that punch. I’m going to either block or I’m going to expose that opening. GRP 27-On this episode of the I interviewed Derek Pleimen who is an Army veteran, and a part of the Warfighter Foundation. We discussed Derek’s career in the Army, the mission of the Warfighter Foundation, and his recent deployment to Afghanistan as a security contractor. Tu Lam from Ronin Tactics will be in NYC early August to teach a blade seminar. We haven’t locked in the dates yet, but will do so in the next few days. So far the locations we have are in Williamsburg Brooklyn, and Edge Water New Jersey. If you’re interested in hosting a class, or attending send an email to john@globalrecon.net. Below is an excerpt from the episode: John Hendricks: So you were in close proximity to Camp Integrity during the attack when Andrew McKenna was killed? Derek Pleimen: Yeah our base was actually right beside Camp Integrity where Sergeant McKenna was at. It was around 10 o clock at night and we were just watching TV, and the explosion went off. It was a VBIED that started it off. They went right into the gate. After that they had actual suicide bombers run in. It sucks being a security contractor sometimes because our main job is to make sure our clients are safe. When that happened we were standing on HESCOS watching the entire fight unfold. We really couldn’t do anything about it unfortunately. We wanted to help, but our bosses wouldn’t let us go, plus we had no comms with the base. We were expecting to be attacked next but it never came. It was a pretty rough night. It was an intense firefight that lasted a few hours unfortunately a great man was killed in Master Sgt. Andrew McKenna.

Born in Israel in 1951, Boaz Vaadia is an internationally known sculptor who works primarily in stone and bronze. Vaadia moved to New York in 1975 and his studio is located in Williamsburg Brooklyn. Growing up on a farm in Gat Rimon, Israel, Vaadia was inspired by the nature around him. Vaadia says of his sculpture, "I work with nature as an equal partner, that's still the strongest thing I deal with today, that primal connection of man to earth. It's in the materials I use, the environments I make and the way I work." Vaadia hand-carves slices of slate and bluestone, shaping them to be layers in a kind of topographical map. He stacks the horizontal slabs until the graded silhouette of a person, animal or group emerges. He views the geological layering of the stone as a natural model for his own sculptural process. It seems a logical metaphor for our human layering of experience and memory. Vaadia continues the process by casting select pieces in bronze, creating a limited edition. Paired with his sculptures are glacial boulders which function visually as counterpoints to the figures. His work appears as though created by natural forces, such as wind and water; they look simultaneously ancient and futuristic, as if the workmanship forms a bridge from the Stone Age to the digital age. Vaadia's sculptures are permanently sited in many prominent public locations worldwide such as the Time Warner Center, New York City, and included in many museums and private collections globally, such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York City, the Museum of Modern Art, San Francisco, and the Israel Museum, Jerusalem.
