Send your questions or provocations to Adam or Budi here!In the final book club episode of the year, Adam and Budi discuss 'Touching the Rock', by John Hull.Hull was born in 1935, in Corryong in the state of Victoria, Australia. Following a first degree at Melbourne University and an early career in teaching, he studied theology in Cambridge, UK, where he remained, working as a teacher, religious educator and theologian. As a religious educator Hull was influenced by extensive study in the complimentary disciplines of psychology, anthropology, sociology and politics. He presented an inclusive and pluralistic religious education as a critically open study which he believed should be seen primarily as a ‘gift' to students' personal and intellectual development. In 1980, Hull lost his sight and for the last 35 years of his life was totally blind. He wrote extensively about the experience, including reflections on how blindness had changed and deepened his faith. His book, ‘Touching the Rock' was the basis for an award-winning film, ‘Notes on Blindness', which came out after his death.Support the showIf you enjoyed this week´s podcast, please leave a review on Apple Podcasts. Imagine if, as a teenager, you were told that you would lose your vision over the course of a few decades. How would you approach your life, your world, and the people in it? Joining us to discuss these questions is writer Andrew Leland. Andrew has retinitis pigmentosa, a condition that affects the retina's ability to respond to light, leading to progressive irreversible vision loss. Andrew's works have appeared in The New York Times Magazine, The New Yorker, and elsewhere, and he is the author of a 2023 memoir titled The Country of the Blind: A Memoir at the End of Sight. Over the course of our conversation, we explore the culture and language of blindness, what it's like to grieve the gradual loss of sight, how visual impairment changes the appreciation of beauty, how blind individuals can harness the full richness of the human senses, and more. Ultimately, Andrew's deeply personal stories and sharp insights remind us to see the dignity in those living with disabilities, both visible and invisible. In this episode, we discuss:2:16 - Andrew's journey with vision loss starting from his teenage years6:58 - The isolation of having a condition that most around you cannot experience or fully understand11:56 - How blindness exists on a spectrum and in many varieties13:23 - The milestones of gradual blindness that Andrew encountered over the course of his life16:49 - Andrew's advice for how be tactful when interacting people with disabilities such as blindness25:48 - Andrew's reflections on the internal psychology of ableism 28:12  - How blindness has altered Andrew's personal relationships30:16 - How Andrew's experiences as a sighted individual affects his current perceptions with low vision32:57 - How Andrew's loss of vision has shaped his relationship with his other senses and how visual impairment affects the appreciation of beauty44:19 - Andrew's advice to clinicians on how to best meet patients where they are with their disabilitiesLearn more about Andrew and his work at https://www.andrewleland.org/.Andrew is the author of the memoir The Country of the Blind: A Memoir at the End of Sight (2023).In this episode, we discussed John Hull's book Touching the Rock: An Experience of Blindness. You can follow Andrew on Twitter/X @Quailty.Visit our website www.TheDoctorsArt.com where you can find transcripts of all episodes. If you enjoyed this episode, please subscribe, rate, and review our show, available for free on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. A Serious Disc Agreement is the only "serious" podcast on the Australian Internet about "Movie Disc Culture."Alexei Toliopoulos (Finding Drago, Total Reboot) and Blake Howard (One Heat Minute) are expanding their IMPRINT COMPANION podcast to include the best physical media releases worldwide. For this episode, Blake and Alexei discuss Bill Duke's incredible Deep Cover from the Criterion Collection and have a general "Criterion Catch-Up" on the first batch of UHDs.Deep CoverFilm noir hits the mean streets of 1990s Los Angeles in this stylish and subversive underworld odyssey from veteran actor-director Bill Duke. Laurence Fishburne stars as Russell Stevens, a police officer who goes undercover as “John Hull,” the partner of a dangerously ambitious cocaine trafficker (Jeff Goldblum), in order to infiltrate and bring down a powerful Latin American drug ring operating in LA. But the further Stevens descends into this ruthless world of money, violence, and power, the more disillusioned he becomes—and the harder it is to make out the line between right and wrong, crime and justice. Steeped in shadowy, neon-soaked atmosphere and featuring Dr. Dre's debut solo single, Deep Cover is an unsung gem of the nineties' Black cinema explosion that delivers a riveting character study and sleek action thrills alongside a furious moral indictment of America and the devastating failures of the war on drugs.DIRECTOR-APPROVED SPECIAL EDITION FEATURESNew 4K digital restoration, with 2.0 surround DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack on the Blu-rayNew interview with director Bill DukeAFI Conservatory seminar from 2018 featuring Duke and actor Laurence Fishburne, moderated by film critic Elvis MitchellNew conversation between film scholars Racquel J. In telling the story of the meteoric rise and precipitous fall of a William Randolph Hearst–like newspaper magnate named Charles Foster Kane, Welles not only created the definitive portrait of American megalomania, he also unleashed a torrent of stylistic innovations—from the jigsaw-puzzle narrative structure to the stunning deep-focus camera work of Gregg Toland—that have ensured that Citizen Kane remains fresh and galvanizing for every new generation of moviegoers to encounter it.SPECIAL FEATURESNew 4K digital restoration, with uncompressed monaural soundtrackIn the 4K UHD edition: One 4K UHD disc of the film presented in Dolby Vision HDR and three Blu-rays with the film and special featuresThree audio commentaries: from 2021 featuring Orson Welles scholars James Naremore and Jonathan Rosenbaum; from 2002 featuring filmmaker Peter Bogdanovich; and from 2002 featuring film critic Roger EbertThe Complete “Citizen Kane,” (1991), a rarely seen feature-length BBC documentaryNew interviews with critic Farran Smith Nehme and film scholar Racquel J. There, in the shadow of the riots of 1965 and 1992, young Caine (Tyrin Turner) is growing up under the influence of his ruthless, drug-dealing father (Samuel L. Jackson, in a chilling cameo) and his loose-cannon best friend, O-Dog (Larenz Tate), leading him into a spiral of violent crime from which he is not sure he wants to escape, despite the best efforts of his grandparents and the steadfast Ronnie (Jada Pinkett). During this episode, Shaun McCambridge, Stellar's Managing Director, sits down with Warren Crowther, General Manager of JF Hull Holdings. We delve into how Warren has built a successful Civil Engineering career and gain an insight into JF Hull Holdings, a business that he now leads as General Manager.  Warren's Highlights1:15 Warren's journey to becoming a Civil Engineer3:11 JF Hull the company 6:05 The team & culture7:50 Leaders of JF Hull10:00 Warren's own career and strategies14:30 Career transitioning17:00 Vision moving forward19:15 Warren's personal drivers21:20 Future of civil engineering24:20 Warren's downtime26:20 Elevator pitch of JF Hull Warren's journey to becoming a Civil Engineer From a very early age, Warren wanted to become an engineer and went on to complete a Civil Engineering degree. However, it wasn't until building a bridge in Cape York 3 years after university that it all came together. During this project he had the responsibility of leading a high performing team where he saw it come to life and was able to leave something behind; it was a game changing moment for him. JF Hull the company Started in 1977 started by John Hull; from his own home and the workshop in the garage. He was. Always focussed on looking after people and engineering excellence was a driver for him. These really were the values that the business derived from. Ever since John started the business there was a focus on integrity and our commitment to customers and partners. The key is that we always put focus on the long-term view, not the short-term; reality is that there is still a commercial element but our approach is long-term; where it is best to take a hit short team rather than damage the partnerships down the track; by doing this, in time you do get a competitive advantage in the market but you must continually come back to it. The team & cultureWe have many longstanding team members with some 10,20,30+ years of service.Over the years people have really enjoyed the leadership of John Hull, Founder & Chairman and Bruce Graham, Executive Director; they have built a lot of staff loyalty. The leaders of JF HullTogether, both John Hull and Graham have been the driving force behind the business. As highlighted previously, John focussed on people relationships and engineering solutions; Bruce in contrast is the key person on how to run an efficient and competitive contracting business; different but similar in how they are both very strategic and take risks.  Together with two younger long-term employees and myself in the executive board team. Warren's own career and strategiesWarren has always had senior people within and outside the civil engineering field that he has been inspired by; those who maintained their integrity, principles and character; people who had the reputation that his “handshake is as good as a contract” and that is few and far between in the competitive civil engineering sector.Career transitioningAfter working at a Tier One company for 15 years on big projects with high profiles, he realised that even though there were great leaders within the company, he wasn't the same as them. What I perceived as my strengths; others saw it as a weakness. After 1 year at JF Hull, Warren appreciates being trusted by clients and partners; that the trust is there in the market already. He also enjoys the concentration of highly skilled people as well as working with systems and processes that is based on the KISS principle and that there is a real laser focus on finding the smartest engineering solutions.Vision moving forwardConsolidate the place that the business has in the market already, which is to be the leading structural specialist in Queensland. Many people ask Warren if the plan is to grow the business; to this, Warren answers yes and no. If the opportunity is there, then yes but if it isn't then definitely not; he doesn't want to be caught in the race to the bottom.Warren's personal driversHis motivation completing an MBA was to differentiate himself from his peers that he was competing against for promotions. Ultimately, he doesn't feel like it accelerated him but he did learn a lot from the studies; for him, when he compared to what he learnt on the job it was probably minor. He is a firm believer that what you get out of an MBA is what you put in and he most probably didn't put enough in with competing family and work priorities.Future of Civil EngineeringIn the short-term situation with COVID, where many people faced economic and health impacts, the reality is that Governments' during a recession highlight the civil engineering sector as a winner with announcements of projects and initiatives; so there is a very bright and exciting future. In the long-term there will always be a need for engineering even with emerging technologies such as AI. Apart from the continuing need, the sector itself is embracing diversity, and technology; enabling it to move with the times. Warren's downtimeWarren loves road and mountain biking as well as reading. Best book at the moment is Milkman by Anna Burns; Set in North Belfast, a book with resilience, family and enabled him to reflect on how well we have it now. Elevator pitch of JF Hull The business takes practical common sense with specialised tech know how that produces the magical dust; this brings us as business the opportunity for us to work on the most exciting projects with the best partners and clients in Queensland. Our reason for being is looking after people; and this enables us to provide great career opportunities in an exciting environment.

"This week on Beer Sessions, Jimmy Carbone makes a long awaited return to the studio! He is joined by John Holl, an award-winning journalist covering the beer industry and author of the newly published book, Drink Beer, Think Beer: Getting to the Bottom of Every Pint. We also hear from Justin Phillips, Megan Saxelby and Noah Levin who make up the team at Beer Table, a specialty beer shop in New York City. Jimmy and his guests discuss trends in the beer industry, trying to get to the bottom of which are meaningful and which may be fleeting. John Hull argues we should step away from modifiers like ‘craft’ and ‘independent.’ Everyone is interested in the ways the local food movement is impacting breweries as many begin to grow their own grain and malt. What seems to matter most, is how consumers are making personal connections with the beer they drink. Beer Sessions Radio is powered by Simplecast

Based on the Emmy Award-winning short film of the same name, Notes on Blindness is the debut feature from Writer-Directors Peter Middleton & James Spinney. In 1983, after decades of steady deterioration, writer and theologian John Hull became totally blind. To help him make sense of the upheaval in his life, he began documenting his experiences on audio cassette. Drawing on John’s original audio recordings, Notes on Blindness is a poetic and intimate story of loss, rebirth and transformation, charting his extraordinary journey into ‘a world beyond sight’. To compliment this archive material, the filmmakers recorded over twenty hours of audio interviews with John and his wife Marilyn. These audio interviews are interwoven throughout the film’s soundtrack, forming a lyrical narration, with the couple reflecting on events from a distance of thirty years. This wealth of documentary audio material is embedded within cinematic interpretations, in which actors play John and his family, lip-synching to this documentary audio. This innovative creative approach liberates the scope of the film to explore the interior aspects of John’s journey into blindness – John’s dream life, his memories and flights of imagination. Writer-Directors Peter Middleton & James Spinney join us for a conversation on the their innovative approach to conveying the experience of blindness and the challenges of telling this deeply personal story of love and triumph. Story of film subject John Hull: John M. Hull taught for 30 years at the University of Birmingham until his retirement in 2002. He was the first professor of Religious Education in the UK and recipient of the prestigious William Rainey Harper award from the Religious Education Association of the US and Canada. This award is only held by 12 international scholars, and is presented to ‘outstanding leaders whose work in other fields has had a profound impact upon religious education’, including luminaries such as Marshall McLuhan, Margaret Mead and Paolo Freire. The world we experience through screen based technology is two dimensional which some argue creates distance between the viewer and the viewed but can modern day virtual reality story telling using a three dimensional perspective go further than any other medium of technology to enable us to really experience the lives of others, to walk in another man's shoes? Vicky Sutherland is mum to eight year old Arron who suffers from autism. Vicky tries to see the world through Arron's eyes as he suffers from sensory overload but for the first time she watches a virtual reality experience produced by The National Autistic Society which shows the world from the perspective of an autistic child experiencing sensory overload. She discovers whether this gives her a new perspective into Arron's experience of the world around him. Imogen Blood's father John Hull lost his sight over a number of years, while she tried to understand what it was like for her father she only fully appreciated how sound became such an anchor in his world of darkness when she watched the virtual reality film Notes On Blindness: Into Darkness, which features John's use of echo location in order to navigate the world around him. And Aleks speaks to Gabo Arora the Director of the UN's Virtual Reality Lab who has produced several virtual reality films including Clouds Over Sidra featuring 12 years old Syrian refugee Sidra. As Sidra introduces the viewer to life in a refugee camp, Aleks questions whether these types of films reduce the distance between the viewer and the viewed, changing our perspective and increasing our empathy because we are able to walk in another person's shoes. Produced by Kate Bissell.

John Hull began losing his sight in his mid-forties. He describes it as a dark black disc that slowly progressed over his field of vision. “Do remember that day when I caught a glimpse of a church spire?” the Australian theologian asks his wife, Marilyn,in the documentary film, Notes on Blindness. “I think that's the last thing you ever saw,” she replies. As John was losing his sight, he was intent on understanding blindness and started recording an audio diary. “I had to think about blindness because if I didn't understand it, it would defeat me,”he explains. On these tapes, he records his daily“notes” on blindness, his frustration and fears, and candid conversations with his children about blindness and why “God doesn't help him get his eyes back”.  Thirty years later, these tapes have become the basis for a documentary created by Peter Middleton and James Spinney, Notes on Blindness. The film takes viewers into the experience of what it was like for John Hull to lose his sight, and how he ultimately came to consider his blindness as a gift. In this episode of Life & Faith,Natasha Moore speaks with Peter Middleton, about the documentary, the life ofJohn Hull, and how his audio diaries continue to shape our understanding of blindness.
