In 1993, a gritty and unflinching crime movie called Menace II Society was released to huge acclaim. The debut picture from the teenage directors, Allen and Albert Hughes, provided a deep dive into the harsh realities faced by many young African Americans growing up in Los Angeles. But behind the scenes, all was not well and the violence on-screen bled into real life. Rap sensation, Tupac Shakur – who had originally been cast to feature in the movie – had fallen out with the directors and was sacked during production. He promised retribution against the Hughes brothers, and his retribution would eventually land him time in jail. More than 30 years on from the movie's release, Allen Hughes shares his memories of that time with Matt Pintus. Eye-witness accounts brought to life by archive. Witness History is for those fascinated by the past. We take you to the events that have shaped our world through the eyes of the people who were there. For nine minutes every day, we take you back in time and all over the world, to examine wars, coups, scientific discoveries, cultural moments and much more. Recent episodes explore everything from football in Brazil, the history of the ‘Indian Titanic' and the invention of air fryers, to Public Enemy's Fight The Power, subway art and the political crisis in Georgia. We look at the lives of some of the most famous leaders, artists, scientists and personalities in history, including: visionary architect Antoni Gaudi and the design of the Sagrada Familia; Michael Jordan and his bespoke Nike trainers; Princess Diana at the Taj Mahal; and Görel Hanser, manager of legendary Swedish pop band Abba on the influence they've had on the music industry. You can learn all about fascinating and surprising stories, such as the time an Iraqi journalist hurled his shoes at the President of the United States in protest of America's occupation of Iraq; the creation of the Hollywood commercial that changed advertising forever; and the ascent of the first Aboriginal MP.(Photo: Tupac Shakur pictured in 1993. Gaslit Nation is recharging our batteries for the big election ahead so we're re-running a popular episode this week: Andrea's interview with her longtime friend and mentor, the journalist, filmmaker, and author Nelson George. Exclusively for our Patreon community we're publishing an all new bonus show this Saturday on how to stop MAGA. To our supporters at the Democracy Defender level and higher, submit your questions for our Q&A in the comments below or in a private message -- we always love hearing from you! Our Q&A will be out later this month! Thank you to everyone who supports the show -- we could not make Gaslit Nation without you!     Nelson George set off to become the greatest music writer in the world. In this surreal essay, he explains his strange relationship with Prince who summoned him to listen to new music; this confirms George's dream was achieved. Having come out of the projects in Brooklyn to contribute to the bohemian renaissance of Spike Lee turning Brooklyn into a global brand, George lived the explosion of Black culture across film, music, art, and more at the close of the 20th century and looks back at this groundbreaking time in a sweeping and important discussion of why art matters.     This is an interview about artists -- it's for people who want to be artists -- it's for artists at all stages of their careers -- it's for people who love and consume art -- it's a discussion about the value of mentorship -- and the way to get to the heart of being an artist, why that's important, what that means, the practical ins and outs of how to do it.     From the biography on his website: "Nelson George is the author of several histories of African American music, including Where Did Our Love Go: the Rise and Fall of the Motown Sound, The Death of Rhythm & Blues, and the classic Hip Hop America. He has published two collections of music journalism: Buppies, BBoys, Baps & Bohos: Notes on Post-Soul America and the recent The Nelson George Mixtape, which is available through Pacific Books. He has written several novels with music themes (The Accidental Hunter, The Plot Against Hip Hop, The Lost Treasures of R&B, and To Funk and Die in LA). In television, George was a producer on the Emmy Award winning The Chris Rock Show on HBO, a producer on Hip Hop Honors on VH1, and executive producer of the American Gangster crime series on BET. As a filmmaker, George has co-written the screenplays to Strictly Business and CB4. He directed Queen Latifah to a Golden Globe in the HBO film Life Support, which he also co-wrote. He has directed a number of documentaries including Finding the Funk, The Announcement, and Brooklyn Boheme (Showtime). George was a producer on the award winning documentary on Black music executive Clarence Avant, The Black Godfather, for Netflix. His theatrical documentary on ballerina Misty Copeland is called A Ballerina's Tale. He was a writer/producer on Baz Lurhmann's hip hop inspired Netflix series The Get Down. He is an executive producer of Dear Mama, a documentary series about Tupac Shakur directed by Allen Hughes." And, to add to this illustrious biography, Nelson has been a longtime friend and mentor who helped Andrea navigate the wily world of getting Mr. Jones written and produced.     Fight for your mind! In this episode of Consequence Uncut, Senior Entertainment Editor Liz Shannon Miller sits down with Allen Hughes to talk about his new FX Docuseries Dear Mama, a five-part documentary miniseries about the life of Tupac Shakur's mother, Afeni Shakur. As one half of the filmmaking duo the Hughes Borthers alongside his twin brother Albert, Allen Hughes is an acclaimed director, screenwriter, and producer. The pair made their feature film debut with 1993's Menace II Society, a gritty and realistic portrayal of life in the inner city that's been lauded for its complex exploration of the social and moral issues present in urban Los Angeles life in the early '90s. Infamously, Tupac was originally slated to star in the film, but a disagreement and eventual altercation led to the rapper spending 15 days in jail instead. In addition to discussing Dear Mama, Hughes and Miller celebrate Hip-Hop 50, touching on the filmmaker's beginnings in making music videos and how hip-hop has influenced pop culture and society at large.” Hip-hop did something that no other medium and art form in the history of mankind and womankind did, which is [that it] completely consumed everything in its path. And, you saw how, in the last five years – it was happening for 30, 40 years – it became the number one selling genre of music because it literally envelops everything in its path and nothing can survive hip-hop's path because it just adopts in. So R&B became hip-hop. Rock became hip-hop. Country became hip-hop. So you can't compete with that.”Check Allen Hughes FX Docuseries Dear Mama on Hulu here, where new users can get a 30-day free trial by signing up now.Listen to the full interview with Allen Huges now and you can read the full article on Consequence.net. Afeni Shakur was a revolutionary, an intellect and a voice for the people. She became a feminist darling of the '70s, a female leader in the movement amidst the macho milieu of the Black Panther Party. Tupac was a rapper and poet, a political visionary and philosopher who became known as one of the greatest rap artists of all time. In addition to becoming a global sex symbol and media favorite for his outspoken and sometimes outrageous antics, he would eventually become the poster child for modern Black activism. Their story chronicles the possibilities and contradictions of the United States from a time of revolutionary fervor to Hip Hop culture's most ostentatious decade.FX's Dear Mama is both an audio and visual experience. Tupac's timeless message is undeniable as beats evaporate into soundscapes and his lyrics revealed to be mantras of passion and politics. It eschews strict chronology for a style that slides back and forth in time, finding linkages between mother and son, 1970s and 1990s, black activism and hip hop, that highlight how much has and has not changed in the struggle for human rights. Through this technique, the eras speak to each other and melt time away, shifting the dual narratives into one definitive portrait of a global superstar and the woman who shaped him, forever linked by love and fate.Award-winning filmmaker Allen Hughes is executive producer, director, and writer on FX's Dear Mama. Hughes' major leap into the entertainment industry came with his and twin brother Albert's jolting debut as the 20-year-old creators/directors of Menace II Society. His other films with Albert include Dead Presidents, From Hell, The Book of Eli and the documentary American Pimp. Allen's most recent project was the critically acclaimed four-part HBO documentary series The Defiant Ones, the stories of Jimmy Iovine and Dr. Dre.

Hell & High Water with John Heilemann

In a special two-part episode, John Heilemann talks with visionary film and television director Allen Hughes about Dear Mama — the sprawling, spellbinding documentary series about the lives and times of hip hop icon Tupac Shakur and his mother, Afeni, a prominent member of the Black Panther Party in the Sixties and Seventies — that Hughes has been working on for much of the past three years. The first episode of Dear Mama premieres on September 15 at the Toronto International Film Festival, with the entire five-part series airing on F/X later this year; Hughes's conversation with Heilemann is the first time he has spoken in detail about the project. They discuss the director's tumultuous relationship with Tupac in both of their early years in show business, which led to Hughes being brutally beaten by gang associates of the young rapper; how the relationship between Tupac and his mother shaped his outlook, politics, and attitude toward violence; the hot-eyed feud between hip hop's East Coast and West Coast factions in the Nineties; and the still much-debated circumstances surrounding Tupac's murder in Las Vegas in 1996. In second part of the episode, Hughes and Heilemann explore the director's groundbreaking career, from Menace II Society, Dead Presidents, and The Book of Eli to the game-changing HBO doc series, The Defiant Ones, about music-industry titans Dr Dre and Jimmy Iovine, as well as Hughes's tantalizing next undertaking: a biopic of Motown legend Marvin Gaye, entitled What's Going On. SYNERGIZE! She came out of nowhere screaming something incoherent and Anna could feel the larger woman's momentum as she rushed into her grabbing with both hands at her blouse. Anna had luckily done this before in her HAPKIDO training. She audibly said, “SYNERGIZE ,” as she moved with her new friend in what might have appeared to be a new age dance move. The motion itself was enough, and her new found “dance partner from hell” swung right past her. Perhaps she was less upset than she thought, she recognized her mistake, or maybe knew instinctually that Anna was not someone to mess with as she calmed down almost immediately. Within seconds Anna was actually consoling the obviously upset woman with her soothing voice, as the distraught woman sobbed into her hands, and the world was right again. SYNERGY is sometimes overused as a pop, business success, team term. You know, the kind of stuff you hear just before your business team does the “fall back and trust catch” exercise. In self-defense and in life, or Life Defense, SYNERGY is a very real thing. In fact if you don't SYNERGIZE with a larger, stronger, or faster opponent, you'll probably suffer assault, injury and perhaps death. Energy is just energy. In the simplest of HAPKIDO and Aikido terms, “Use the energy that is given you.” In life look for ways to use even the energy of your opponent, or opposition to multiply your power and improve your outcome…. Welcome to The Prison Post. My co-host Jason Bryant was on assignment, so I brought in my dear friend, James Willock as my co-host for this special episode. James was incarcerated from the age of 19 to the age of 47 in California's prison system and has now been free for a little over one year. We are excited to be back and to drop Episode 42 with one of the greatest human beings on this planet, Fritzi Horstman. Fritzi Horstman is the Founder and Executive Director of the Compassion Prison Project (CPP) an organization dedicated to creating trauma-informed prisons and communities and bringing creative inspiration to all men and women living and working in prisons. With 95% of the incarcerated men and women eventually returning home, Fritzi believes it is imperative that we address the chronic mental health issues in prison with common sense, compassion and urgency. In 2020, Fritzi directed “Step Inside the Circle” at California State Prison – Los Angeles County with 235 incarcerated men. The video has reached nearly 3 million views worldwide and has attracted over 900 volunteers to CPP.  Fritzi and the team at CPP are in production, creating a 12-part series entitled “Trauma Talks” to be distributed to prisons in the US and abroad which launched in September 2021. Fritzi produced HBO's “The Defiant Ones” directed by Allen Hughes which has garnered several awards including a Grammy for Best Music Film. Her first feature, “Take A Number,” which she wrote, produced, and directed, debuted at the Slamdance festival and premiered on HBO. Fritzi studied at New York University's summer film program and received a Bachelor of Arts in Film and English from Vassar College. CPP's mission is to transform prisons and communities through compassionate action. Their main focus is on childhood trauma and how it affects the lives of men and women living and working in prisons. In our research, using the CDC/Kaiser Permanente ACEs study (Adverse Childhood Experiences), we have seen that ACE's are disproportionately high within the prison system. At CPP, they are focused on bringing childhood trauma awareness, education and healing to prisons and communities both in the U.S. and globally. Fritzi reached reached out to me and asked if I and members of our team at CROP Organization would be willing to go back into the prison with her for a couple of days to participate in her "Step Inside the Circle" work with the incarcerated and her trauma conversations with officers. We were set to get on a call and she asked me to watch one of her award winning videos first. I watched and called her in tears 7 minutes later which led to over a 2 hour zoom about the addressing trauma and healing in my incarcerated brothers and sisters and within myself. She exudes empathy and compassion as a natural expression of who she is and she's one of those rare people you meet and know your life would never be the same afterwards.
