Repurposing & Upcycling for Preppers | Episode 351 In a world where waste is abundant and resources can be scarce, learning how to repurpose and upcycle everyday items is a vital skill for preppers. Not only does it save money, but it also enhances self-sufficiency and sustainability. In this episode, we'll explore creative ways to repurpose common household items for survival, homesteading, and emergency preparedness. Why Repurposing Matters Repurposing isn't just about saving money—it's about making the most of what you have and reducing waste. In a survival scenario, the ability to adapt and innovate using limited resources can mean the difference between comfort and hardship. By upcycling, you give new life to old materials while keeping them out of landfills. Household Items with New Uses Glass Jars – Use them for food storage, DIY oil lamps, or fermenting vegetables. Plastic Bottles – Turn them into water filters, seed starters, or emergency water storage. Tin Cans – Create camp stoves, candle holders, or small storage containers. Old Clothes & Fabric – Repurpose for insulation, rags, or even patching gear. DIY Fire Starters Creating homemade fire starters is easy and ensures you always have a reliable way to make fire. Some simple and effective methods include: Dryer lint and wax-stuffed egg cartons Cotton balls soaked in petroleum jelly Sawdust mixed with melted wax Upcycled Water Storage & Filtration Instead of throwing away old food-grade containers, repurpose them into emergency water storage. Use 2-liter soda bottles for water purification systems or build a rainwater collection system using barrels. Homemade Tools & Gear Preppers are known for their ingenuity. With some creativity, you can make survival tools from scrap materials: Paracord belts – Woven belts or bracelets for emergency cordage. DIY fishing kit – Use soda can tabs as fishing hooks. Homemade knives – Repurpose old saw blades into knives or tools. Garden & Compost Hacks Gardening is a cornerstone of self-sufficiency, and repurposing materials can make it even more cost-effective: Turn plastic tubs into self-watering planters. Use eggshells and coffee grounds as natural fertilizers. Convert old tires into raised garden beds. Repurposing Old Electronics Even broken electronics have valuable parts: Salvage batteries and wiring for DIY solar setups. Turn an old car alternator into a small wind turbine. Use old laptops for emergency communication setups. Creative DIY Lighting If the grid goes down, lighting is essential. Some creative upcycling ideas include: Mason jar solar lights. Oil lamps using cooking oil and a wick. Repurposing broken flashlights into LED lanterns. Final Thoughts Repurposing and upcycling is more than just a frugal practice—it's a mindset that helps preppers stay resilient and resourceful. With a little creativity, everyday items can serve multiple purposes, ensuring that nothing goes to waste. Tune in to Episode 351 for a deep dive into these DIY survival skills!
Ellen Freeman is the editor of Mildew, the secondhand fashion magazine that's based in Mexico, and which reflects on a whole world of vintage, recycled, and upcycled fashion and art. We delivered the second issue to Stack subscribers in November 2023, and the third issue came out at the end of last year, so I caught up with Ellen recently to find out what's happened in a year's worth of independent publishing, including the big change that has seen Mildew officially joining the Broccoli independent publishing empire.

Smell SKUNK? Love is in the air, and the smell comes along too. Learn about skunks and what to do if your dog is sprayed. Plus, Hot Buys & Gift Ideas to improve Summer Adventures. This is Rebecca Wanner aka 'BEC' and Jeff ‘Tigger' Erhardt with The Bend Radio Show & Podcast, your news outlet for the latest in the Outdoors & Western Lifestyle! Episode 177 Details SKUNK! WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT SKUNKS BEFORE SPRAYED Skunk mating season begins in February and continues until the end of March. Female skunks usually only have one litter each year. So why are we telling you this, because LOVE and awful smells are in the air this time of year during skunk breeding season! What happens during skunk mating season? During mating season, neighborhoods may notice an increase in skunk odors. A skunk can travel from up to six miles away to find a mate. When a male finds a female, she can discourage his advances by emitting an odor. The increased and pungent aroma is a sign of females repelling males in pursuit of the right mate. Males spray each other as they fight over females for their love. Females will spray males they don't want to mate with, and the smell can reach up to a mile away. DOG SPRAYED BY SKUNK? HERE'S HOW TO WASH YOUR DOG Thankfully times have changed and you do not have to worry about having an enormous amount of tomato juice or a place to think about having such a bath. The best news is that you more than likely have the three ingredients needed to make a de-skunk shampoo in your home. BEFORE YOU START - be sure to be wearing OLD CLOTHES and read the Important Key Warnings listed below! Mix 3 to 4 parts 3% hydrogen peroxide to 1 part baking soda, along with a teaspoon of dish detergent. Apply this mixture to your dog while it's still bubbling IMPORTANT KEY WARNINGS: Do not use the solution near your dog's eyes, and be careful when applying around the mouth. Peroxide may bleach your dog's fur, an effect that is especially noticeable on black or brown dogs. Peroxide may also bleach any other material it comes in contact with, like clothing, towels or furniture. LASTLY - remember that skunks can carry the rabies virus, so be sure to keep your dog always up to date on their rabies vaccinations. HOT BUYS NOW: Gadgets for House, Cabin or Gift Ideas Electric Egg Cooker: Using very little water the electric cooker steams the eggs to perfection for easy peeling in only 12 minutes. Collapsible Sinks: Found in camping aisles or online, these collapsible containers save space yet are great for in your home, cabin or camper. Uses include as an extra sink, serving drinks that are needing to be set in water at a party and the best part - the sinks are inexpensive. GEEKEY Multitool: Don't be fooled by this small key shaped gadget that is the size of a regular household key. This TSA approved GEEKEY multitool includes a bike spoke key, screwdriver, wrench, scoring tip, box cutter, serrated edge, can opener, wire stripper, file, ruler, protractor, bottle opener, multi-head fit driver and more. Whether you are opening a bottle, tightening a loose screw, or cutting open a box, GEEKEY is there for you when you need it. FXW ROLLICK DOG PLAYPEN: specifically designed for camping that can create a boundary around one's campsite or act as a playpen for the dog when traveling. Go To Statement Considered Harmful is a solid classic entry in the X Considered Harmful metafiction genre, authored by renowned computer scientist and idiosyncratic grump, Edsger Wybe Dijkstra. Surprisingly (given the impact it's had) this is a minuscule speck of a paper, lasting only 1-ish pages, and it even digresses several times from the main point. Fear not! Jimmy and I spend the entirety of these two podcast hours thoroughly analyzing the paper, wringing every last drop of insight from it, speaking directly to how programming ought to be reimagined from the molten venture capital core on up. Yes indeed, this is another episode in the fine tradition of Future of Coding where we stay faithfully close to the text, we leave the second-order implications alone, and there's nothing more than that. In episode 285, Kestrel welcomes artist and illustrator Kelly Lottahall to the show. An artist and illustrator, Kelly incorporates preloved textiles and scraps into her unique works of art. “It's so like not that significant to most people, but for me — when it's an item, a shirt, anything that's used … this doesn't have to be vintage, I'm talking about stuff that's just regular old stuff people don't want. Not like vintage that's 30 years old and super cool because it's another era — no, I'm talking about like 10 years ago and you don't care about it anymore. I'm like no, but I do — that could be really really cool, are you kidding me?” -Kelly Have you ever noticed how the fashion world often orients itself as very separate from the art world? They are obviously intertwined, and we see some overlap in the mainstream, but there tends to be a very distanced relationship – especially in the way that the fashion industry disregards the artistic aspects of fashion. Here's a couple examples – Garment construction has been devalued and not treated as though it is a REAL art form – both in the way sewers are paid (so often less than a living wage) when they are true artists; and also in how the industry has reduced our perceived *value* of garments through fast fashion and lower prices. There is the way that traditional fabrics and garments (which literally ARE art) have been disrespected and/or appropriated for the sake of commercialism – so stealing cultural fashion art and then replicating it in a way to simply make a profit off of it (in turn, totally detaching it from its artistic roots). This week's guest is literally BRINGING the fashion and art worlds together through her unique craft, and she's repurposing quote unquote *trash* while doing it. As she says – “I like finding old things and turning them into new things. I like gadgets that used to work that don't anymore. I like clothes that are too old to wear the original way, that can be recreated in a new way.” Quotes & links from the conversation: “I think there is something in me — there's just this natural connection with somebody's lived in story.” -Kelly (9:36) “The biggest thing we need to understand is that our culture — we just consume so much, excessively consume so much stuff that we just don't have to have. But we also have to understand that brands — fast fashion brands — they also know this about us, and they've made it so easy for us to just click and buy the second we think about it.” -Kelly (32:14) “A Photographer, A Stylist, And An Artist” collaboration Kelly's Website > Follow Kelly on Instagram >

--- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/portuguesewitheli/message
