It's Chicago in the summer of '97, and criminal defense attorney Kathleen Zellner (of Making a Murderer fame) is feeling worn out. After once defending a serial killer, she promised herself never to defend a guilty person again, and has devoted her life to exonerating the innocent. But after years of gruesome murder trials, she needs a holiday. When a lemon-yellow stretch Cadillac bounces into her parking lot, and out hops a five-foot-tall, 77-year-old man named Ben Perri, that holiday arrives. Ben has been accused of a bizarre crime: the theft of hundreds of ultra-rare Beanie Babies from the manufacturer's secret warehouse. With Beanie Baby mania in full swing, the toys are fetching stratospheric prices, and Ben will gladly hook you up with an elusive Digger the Crab or Radar the Bat. The press calls him the Beanie Baby Bandit, but he swears he's innocent. As this jovial grandfather and veteran charms Kathleen and her team, his carefree way of life gives her a new outlook on the difficult job she's chosen. But still, she can't quite answer whether he's guilty, and whether she's broken her promise to herself. Is Ben just an innocent lover of toys, or is he really the Beanie Baby Bandit?JOURNALIST: SERENA COADYEDITING: THOMAS CURRYSOUND-DESIGN & AUDIO MIX: ALICE BOYDVOICE: JILL WINTERNITZ Hosted on Acast. In 2016-17, while working for the USA TODAY NETWORK's Wisconsin Investigative Team, author John Ferak wrote dozens of articles examining the murder case against Steven Avery, who had already beaten one wrongful conviction only to be charged again with the murder of Teresa Halbach in 2005. This case captured global attention through the Netflix documentary "Making A Murderer."In this anniversary edition of WRECKING CREW: Demolishing the Case Against Steven Avery, Ferak not only lays out in meticulous detail the post-conviction strategy of Kathleen Zellner, the high-profile, high-octane lawyer fighting to free Avery but also includes a new "Five Years Later" section. This update provides fresh insights and developments in Avery's ongoing legal battle.Additionally, this special edition features an exclusive epilogue: a November 2023 interview with Steven Avery. For this book, Zellner, arguably America's most successful wrongful conviction attorney, granted Ferak unprecedented access to the exhaustive pro bono efforts she and her small suburban Chicago law firm have invested in a man she believes to be wrongfully ensnared by Manitowoc County's unscrupulous justice system. This anniversary edition offers new revelations and a comprehensive look at a case that continues to stir public debate and demand justice. It is a thrill and honor to have John Ferak return to the show with this amazing update! Updated 5th Anniversary Edition Including Exclusive Interview with Steve Avery In 2016-17, while working for the USA TODAY NETWORK's Wisconsin Investigative Team, author John Ferak wrote dozens of articles examining the murder case against Steven Avery, who had already beaten one wrongful conviction only to be charged again with the murder of Teresa Halbach in 2005. This anniversary edition offers new revelations and a comprehensive look at a case that continues to stir public debate and demand justice. "John Ferak is an investigative journalist who is trying to figure out who committed the murder. He takes all of my evidence, expert opinions and theories and really examines them in detail. [Making a Murderer] touched on some of my investigation and expert experiments but not in as much detail as the book. The series explores many collateral matters, while the book zeroes-in on suspects and motives for the murder, which was not a focal point in the series.” —Attorney Kathleen Zellner, interview with Newsweek Magazine "Whatever you thought you believed about this infamous case, get ready to change your mind or be more convinced than ever. … Fascinating." —New York Times bestselling author Steve Jackson "If you're planning to binge-watch Making a Murderer 2 over the holidays, order John Ferak's new book Wrecking Crew, too. Definitive chronicle of criminal justice corruption in Manitowoc County." —Michelle Malkin, host of Michelle Malkin Investigates on CRTV.

On July 23, 2010, Shan Fieldman got into a pick-up truck in a Wal-Mart parking lot in Pontiac, Illinois to arrange the murder of his ex-wife, Shelley, and her current boyfriend, Alan. Fieldman left briefly to get $100.00 from his fiancé, Talia Fonce, which was used as a down‑payment on the hit. Fieldman also provided the hitman with descriptions of his ex and her boyfriend, as well as their home and their habit of hanging out in their garage. He gave the hitman their correct address. While he also left an IOU in the amount f $7,400.00 with the hitman, he did ensure himself plausible deniability by signing it “Joe Smith.” Fieldman was arrested later that night with his fiancé's children in his car. His fiancé was also arrested because she had introduced Fieldman to Trina Bennett, the informant who reported the potential crime to police. Join Lisa O'Brien and Michael Carnahan on Sunday, June 6, 2021, at 8:00 p.m., Central, for Episode 13 of Clear and Convincing. Journalist and author John Ferak, wrote “Wrecking Crew: Demolishing The Case Against Steven Avery,” after spending years as covering the murder case in Manitowoc County in Wisconsin. He does believe Steven Avery and Brendan Dassey are innocent of the murder of Teresa Halbach, and lays out the evidence that supports his claim. John has also been following Steven’s lawyer, Kathleen Zellner, and her law firm as they fight to have his conviction overturned and Steven freed from prison (which is documented in the second season of the Netflix series, "Making A Murderer"). Zellner gave John exclusive access to her the information and new evidence she’s uncovered through her own team of investigators and experts. John shares an alternate theory of the crime and potential suspects that have yet to be questioned. It’s a fascinating look at a controversial case.
TODAY NETWORK’s Wisconsin Investigative Team, author John Ferak wrote dozens of articles examining the murder case again Steven Avery, who had already beat one wrongful conviction only to be charged with the murder of Teresa Halbach in 2005. The case became the wildly successful Netflix “Making A Murderer” documentary. In WRECKING CREW: Demolishing The Case Against Steven Avery, Ferak lays out in exacting detail the post-conviction strategy of Kathleen Zellner, the high-profile, high-octane lawyer, to free Avery. To write this book, Zellner, perhaps America’s most successful wrongful conviction attorney, gave Ferak unique access to the exhaustive pro bono efforts she and her small suburban Chicago law firm dedicated for a man she believes to be a victim of an unscrupulous justice system in Manitowoc County. WRECKING CREW goes deep into Making a Murderer and the effort to expose the truth in the case of Steven Avery. In 2016-17, while working for the USA TODAY NETWORK’s Wisconsin Investigative Team, author John Ferak wrote dozens of articles examining the murder case against Steven Avery, who had already beat one wrongful conviction only to be charged with the murder of Teresa Halbach in 2005. To write this book, Zellner, perhaps America’s most successful wrongful conviction attorney, gave Ferak unfettered access to the exhaustive pro bono efforts she and her small suburban Chicago law firm dedicated for a man she believes to be a victim of an unscrupulous justice system in Manitowoc County.
Even In death, Casey Kasem — the beloved radio icon — is at the center of a brutal three-decade old family feud dominated by greed, spite, intrigue and bitter recriminations. In opposite corners — and at each other's throats — are Casey's widow, Jeanne, and three children from his first marriage who are suing each other for wrongful death — with accusations on each side that the other hastened the legend's demise. The stunning new charges come as police in Washington open a death investigation case more than four years after Casey's death. Now, in her most comprehensive interview since her husband's 2014 passing, Jeanne reacted to step-daughter Kerri who recently declared on a "48 Hours" episode: “Jean killed my father. What she did led to his death.”Countering those charges exclusively to "All Rise," Jeanne claimed that Kerri was part of an evil plot — along with members of the Church of Scientology — to get their hands on his reputed $80 million fortune and cash in on a $2.1 million dollar life insurance policy!“It was pre-planned,” Jeannie told Dylan Howard. “It's very clear and it's very convincing that they wanted to seek physical control of Casey, human traffic him and trap him in a hospital, chemically restrain him and kill him.”Casey died in June 2014 in Washington state, where Jeanne took him after removing him from a medical facility in Southern California where he was receiving around-the-clock care. The longtime "American Top 40" host had a form of dementia and severe bedsores when he died.In a second "All Rise" exclusive, Howard delves beyond the portrait painted of Steven Avery in Netflix's hit true crime documentary "Making A Murderer."Is he a seemingly harmless man who was wrongfully convicted in the 2005 rape and murder of local photographer Teresa Halbach?According to legal documents exclusively obtained by "All Rise", the truth about Steven's threatening nature and violence towards women can finally exposed — revealing the 56-year-old father-of-four wrote menacing letters to his ex-wife and he has been accused of assault by more than one woman. But the allegations and the letters were deemed inadmissible by a judge, so they were never submitted as evidence in his trial for the murder of Teresa Halbach. We probe Steven's former lawyer, Jerry Buting, about these new revelations — and his former client's new attorney, Kathleen Zellner, who has claimed Steven should get a new trial because of Jerry's "ineffective assistance of counsel."Guests:Jeanne Kasem, widow of Casey KasemJerry Buting, former lawyer for Steven Avery*** UPDATE AFTER BROADCAST *** The lawyer who faced criticism from Jeanne Kasem in this episode of “All Rise” provided this statement to producers after the broadcast. “Every action that I took in the course of the litigation was authorized by the court pursuant to court order and that Jean's wild conspiracy theories have already been dismissed by the federal court in Washington who entered judgment against her and found that she had no evidence to back up her claims,” attorney Troy Martin said. Mr. Martin also denied that he is Scientologist, as Jeanne claimed. “I am not a member of the church of scientology. I'm Jewish. One of my employees was a scientologist and they asked me to speak at his funeral.”

Thursday, November 8, 2018 The hit docuseries 'Making a Murderer' was a global phenomenon for Netflix in 2015. Season two released last month & on this episode, we're bringing everyone up to speed (in case you have zero familiarity with this case) as we discuss coerced confessions, the federal appeals process & all the new evidence (& debunked evidence) found by superstar attorney Kathleen Zellner. So many opinions about Steven Avery, Brendan Dassey, Ken Kratz, Barbara Tadych, Bobby & Bryan Dassey, Earl Avery (where the f*@# was that guy season one?!), Laura Nirider, etc. Initially we were led to believe, at the very least, Steven and Brendan got f*&$@# with a medium-sized penis #ReasonableDoubt ...however, as the evidence continued to pile up against #ManitowocCounty it seems this flesh dragon was more on the huge side & it was absolutely shoved straight up their chocolate makers. #MakingAMurderer #PrisonReform Support the podcast & check out our new website @ www.eandgpodcast.com Our show is made possible because of our listeners & by far, the best way to support us (no matter how much you give) is by setting up a monthly donation through PayPal. Making a Mania: The Steven Avery Saga and Why We're Obsessed
Among the surprises in "Making a Murderer Part 2" is the way Steven Avery's attorney Kathleen Zellner points fingers at the work of Dean Strang and Jerry Buting, who defended Avery at his 2007 murder trial. We catch up with Buting after his viewing of Part 2 to talk about the series, Zellner's claims of ineffective assistance of council and more.

Is MAM still the same marathon-able, frustrating, compelling show in Part 2 as it was in 2015? Should Moira Demos and Laura Ricciardi have tried harder to make the second season less "one-sided" as to Steven Avery's guilt -- or not at all? Does the second act suffer from a dearth of Strang and Buting, or of suspense as to Avery and Brendan Dassey's fates? And where does Kathleen Zellner keep all those stylish jackets? Speaking of disgraces, the less said about 2006's Skinemax-y take on Karla Homolka, Karla, the better, except that you're better off watching Ellen Pompeo's ripped-from-the-headlines SVU on the case...or Misha Collins's apology for even being IN it. S4E4: A Cold Case, a Dream, and a Tragic Miscarriage of Justice: The Wrongful Conviction of College Student Ryan Ferguson Ryan Ferguson was a 17-year-old high school student when Kent Heitholt, a sportswriter for the Columbia Daily Tribune, was found beaten and strangled in Missouri. Heitholt's murder went unsolved for two years until police received a tip that a man named Charles Erickson could not remember the evening of the murder and had told a friend that he thought he may have been involved. Erickson, who had spent that fateful evening partying with Ryan Ferguson, was interrogated by police and despite initially seeming to have no memory of the night of the murder, eventually confessed and implicated Ryan as well. Police offered Erickson a plea deal in exchange for testimony against Ryan at his trial in 2005. Despite the lack of any physical evidence tying Ryan Ferguson to the crime, he was convicted of second-degree murder and robbery and sentenced to 40 years in prison. In 2009, Kathleen Zellner took over Ryan’s case on a pro bono basis, and in 2013 his conviction was vacated. Since his release, Ryan Ferguson has become a published author of the book Stronger, Faster, Smarter: A Guide to Your Most Powerful Body, hosted a television series on MTV Unlocking the Truth, and an advocate for other wrongfully convicted individuals. wrongfulconvictionpodcast.com Wrongful Conviction with Jason Flom is a production of Lava For Good™ Podcasts in association with Signal Co. Chad Spencer Keller, author of Beyond Avery Road: Buting and the Beast, joins us tonight for Part 2 of his interview alongside Wisconsin Political Insider using the Pseudonym of "Juan Tescrue." Tonight's discussion will detail the recent denial of Steven Avery's new trial in Manitowoc County, as they speak about what happens next from here with defense attorney Kathleen Zellner. Going forward, "Juan Tescrue" and Keller will deliver evidence as to the importance of why all eyes need to be diverted to the politics stemming from Avery's 2003 exoneration and what was happening in Madison at the State Capitol during Teresa Halbach's alleged death in 2005. Keller states, "The case is political, the deck was stacked. It basically became a bi-partisan effort by both parties that leaves Steven Avery in the situation he is in. "Juan Tescrue" will be vouching for the severe "Conflict of Interest" that Keller presents in his book and hopes the two can shed light that Steven Avery never had a chance to begin with. It takes us back to the $36 million question, "Was Steven Avery framed?" Keller also exposes how the Electronic Monitoring of Juveniles Law could have protected Brendan Dassey and released him the very same month that he was arrested in, for his alleged confession on March 1, 2006. Joining us right now are my very special guests Chad Spencer Keller and "Juan Tescrue"... Can their evidence expose a factual miscarriage of justice inside of the Wisconsin DOJ and free Steven Avery and Brendan Dassey? STEVEN AVERY RETRIAL DENIED: Beyond Avery Road-Chad Keller and Juan Tescrue.
I attended day 3 of Melissa Calusinski's evidentiary hearing. Her attorney, Kathleen Zellner, had filed a Post Conviction Relief Petition, based on possible new evidence. Day 3 of the hearing included testimony from an imaging expert who makes some shocking clams about the x-ray images. Updates 2016. Justin and Aaron give opinions on news and updates involving Steven Avery, Adnan Syed, Freddie Gray, Oscar Pistorius, Ethan Couch, Dylann Roof, Kendrick Johnson, and George Zimmerman. It has been a busy year and we have received many emails and messages asking us for our thoughts on each and every one of these cases. Steven Avery's lawyer, Kathleen Zellner has vowed to get him released. Adnan Syed won an appeal and had his conviction in the death of Hae Min Lee vacated and awaits a new trial. Freddie Gray's death prompted Baltimore prosecutor Marilyn Mosby to charge the officers involved in his arrest, but has failed to get a single conviction. Federal investigators looked into the Kendrick Johnson death at his high school and then abandoned their investigation.
