Welcome back to The Mind Mate Podcast! Today, I have the absolute honour of sitting down with Dr. Kirk Schneider—one of the leading voices in contemporary existential-humanistic psychology and a true pioneer in the field of depth-oriented healing. Dr. Schneider has an impressive career that spans decades. He's a licensed psychologist, the past editor of the Journal of Humanistic Psychology, and president of the Existential-Humanistic Institute. He teaches at Saybrook University and Columbia University's Teachers College and is a Fellow of five divisions of the American Psychological Association. Beyond that, he's a prolific author, having written or coauthored 12 books, including The Paradoxical Self, Horror and the Holy, Existential-Integrative Psychotherapy, and Awakening to Awe. Today, we'll touch on his latest contribution, Life-Enhancing Anxiety: Key to a Sane World, which offers a global perspective on existential approaches to healing and transformation. What's striking about Dr. Schneider's work is how deeply it calls us to engage with life's mysteries—the awe, the terror, and the paradoxes that shape the human experience. He's also the founder of the Corps of Depth Healers, a movement designed to bring depth-oriented, existential practices to communities in need. It's a radical and necessary initiative in our increasingly fragmented world, and I'm excited to explore it with him today. If you're as fascinated as I am, I highly recommend diving into Dr. Schneider's world. Visit his website at www.kirkjschneider.com for more about his work and writings. You can also learn about the Corps of Depth Healers at / @corpsofdepthhealers-ws9nq where you'll find resources for cultivating healing and awe in your own communities. So, without further ado, let's dive into an unforgettable conversation with Dr. Kirk Schneider. I hope you enjoy this one as much as I did!
Can understanding primal fears reshape our polarised society? Join us for an interesting conversation with Kirk Schneider, an esteemed psychologist in existential-humanistic existential-integrative psychotherapy. Kirk shares his groundbreaking concept of the "polarized mind," a state driven by primal fear and anxiety, and reflects on how his upbringing, political interests and the US' response to the Iraq War shaped his thoughts on societal issues. Drawing insights from Otto Rank and Ernest Becker, he emphasises the importance of addressing our inner lives and existential struggles to foster a more harmonious society. In navigating some of the complexities of modern life, Kirk and Robbie delve into the tension between contemporary diversity and the nostalgic longing for simpler times. We discuss the allure and pitfalls of quick fixes versus the desire for a more contemplative existence. By exploring Emmanuel Levinas' ideas on recognizing shared vulnerabilities, we discuss the necessity of creatively engaging with diverse perspectives to bridge our societal divides. We also explore shedding light on the underlying fears that drive polarisation and the importance of addressing them to foster coexistence. Finally, we explore the political landscape through the lens of liberalism and conservatism, examining some of their tendencies and the dynamics of polarisation. By sharing practical insights from bridge-building dialogues, like those from the Experiential Democracy Dialogue and Braver Angels, we discuss tools that might be helpful in fostering understanding across ideological divides. We finish by discussing the role of fear in shaping reactive behaviours and the transformative potential of connectedness and embodied presence. Our hope is that this conversation might support appreciation for the power of meaningful, emotionally restorative interactions.
A reshare of a 2022 talk I had with existential psychologist Kirk Schneider. We talk about existential psychology and the power of being able to better understand and recognize the core anxieties we all have about existence, such as our fear of death, meaninglessness, isolation, and freedom. Other topics: how existence can be awe-inspiring but also terrifying; what “existential psychology” and “humanistic psychology” are and how those forms of psychology/therapy differ from more well known and traditional forms of therapy (e.g., psychotherapy); the psychology behind political polarization and narcissism. Today, I am meeting with a faculty-student duo, Dr. Kirk Schneider and Mr. Tyler Gamlen, Saybrook Ph.D. student. We will dig in on the idea of life-enhancing anxiety, depth healing, and Dr. Schneider's proposal that we form a national corps of depth healers. What seems like a heady concept on first blush offers many practical applications supporting our communities. This is a crucial leg to our work in advancing the mental health and well-being of the communities we serve.
In this episode of Causes or Cures, Dr. Eeks chats with Dr. Kirk Schneider about his new book Life-Enhancing Anxiety: Key to a Sane World. In the podcast, Dr. Schneider will tell us more about himself and his own struggle with anxiety and how that got him on the path to discovering life-enhancing anxiety. He'll explain how we get from a state of anxiety to a state of Awe and why it's important that we go through that entire (often difficult) process and not plug or drug it away. He'll discuss ways to overcome the fear of uncertainty, COVID and life-enhancing anxiety, the shortcomings of Positive Psychology and even how life-enhancing anxiety can be used to bridge political divides. In this episode, Dr. David Hanscom continues his discussion with Dr. Kirk Schneider, an integrative existential psychotherapist. He explains the principles and process of his integrative existential therapy practice. He begins by asking the client two questions: How are you presently living? And how are you willing to live? The first question allows the client to explore what is going on. The second question helps clients discover a more open, internally free domain. He focuses on what is most helpful for the client at the present time and invites the client to experience the issue in the body. As they establish trust with him, they can move from experiencing vulnerability to transcend the risk and experience life as an adventure. Dr. Kirk Schneider is a leading spokesperson for existential-humanistic and existential-integrative psychotherapy. He is an adjunct faculty at Saybrook University and Teachers College, Columbia University. He is also the author or coauthor of 14 books, including Existential-Humanistic Therapy (with Orah Krug), Awakening to Awe, and his most recent book Life-Enhancing Anxiety: Key to a Sane World. In this episode, Dr. David Hanscom talks with Dr. Kirk Schneider, an integrative existential psychotherapist. He shares the early experiences he had that later shaped his approach to his psychotherapy practice. He describes the impact of his older brother's untimely death that led him to his first visit to a psychoanalyst at the age of 6. Though he managed this early trauma fairly well, he had a nervous breakdown in graduate school that led to panic attacks and cognitive distortions. Through his work with an existential therapist, Dr. Ann Gustin, he was able to heal and move from terror to curiosity to possibility. Today was a super-interesting and thought-provoking conversation with Dr Kirk Schneider, a highly experienced Existential-Humanistic Psychologist. On the face of it, the conversation we had seems counterintuitive. In a world where more and more people are seeking treatment for anxiety, Kirk contends that is not less anxiety that we need today, but more, at least of a certain kind. Kirk calls this life-enhancing anxiety. He says that life-enhancing anxiety is the anxiety we must face to prevent life-destroying anxiety. It is challenging and requires pluck. But it also may just save us from the disastrous path with which we now contend. This was a spontaneous conversation that went down lots of rabbit-holes and I'd struggle to think that you won't walk away with some useful insights and tools. You can find out more about Dr Kirk on his website where you can also find links to purchase his wide range of interesting books.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
20 min Existential Humanist Psychology - well that's a mouthful. Maureen is as geeky and deeply interested in psychology as anyone, says Pierre. The two of them go down a rabbit hole of discussion kicked off by Dr. David Puder's podcast. A bit of a banter fest here. What was going to be a Resource pod on Dr. Puder's podcast crumbles into a discussion. Dr. Puder's podcast with Dr. Kirk Schneider of the Existential-Humanist Institute, where he is a co-founder, launches this discussion pod, because the two experts Puder and Schneider have difficulty framing this psychological modality and what Schneider does. Because the podcast had difficulty explaining the subject, according to Pierre, Maureen ‘splains integrative therapy to Pierre. Maureen suggests she is in full geek mode in explaining this, but Pierre disagrees because as geeky as Maureen is in trying to read everything on the planet related to her interests, she digests it, stays grounded, and can explain it in a few words. The fact that philosophical terms like ‘existential' and ‘humanist' find their way into therapy shouldn't make it confusing, but it does to Pierre. Dr. Puder's podcast, titled “Psychiatry and Psychotherapy” is not for everyone, but is useful to practitioners and counselors as Maureen says. Maureen wrote Dr. Puder complimenting his podcast. Dr. Puder gave her a T-shirt. Pierre suggests that's how he maintains audience. Kind of a weird podcast. Worth a listen, if for nothing else the opening bucolic scene of Pierre's workation on a ranch in Washington State. Be well. Peace through grace. Learn to live and live to learn. Anxiety is generally thought of something to avoid—especially when we catastrophize—you know that thing our brain does when we imagine worst-case scenarios. For most of us, these scenarios generally have no real value and the images rendered in our minds can be horribly frightening and even toxic. It calls to mind a great quote from Mark Twain who said, “I've lived through some terrible things in my life, some of which actually happened.” Yet, consider this: can anxiety at times act as a signal for us to change course or do something different? In such moments, what if we were able to listen to what our anxiety was telling us? My guest, Dr. Kirk J. Schneider (https://kirkjschneider.com/about/) is one of today's most prominent existential psychologists in the world. You may ask, “What is existential psychology?” Glad you did! According to the American Psychological Association, an existential psychological approach looks at “the subjective meaning of human experience, the uniqueness of the individual, and personal responsibility reflected in choice.” And, as you'll hear, Kirk's work—including his latest book, is all about that. It examines the mystery of life, the anxiety incurred by that mystery, and how to listen to it and find greater meaning. His book, Life Enhancing Anxiety looks at these phenomena and helps us cultivate tools to find more meaning in our lives. SuperPsyched guest, Dr. Michael Amster, who talked on the topic of awe, raved about the book saying, “we need this brilliant book to open a new door to embracing (and engaging with) Life-Enhancing Anxiety.” And Kirkus Reviews said, “…Readers grappling with standard concepts of anxiety will find plenty of food for thought in Schneider's vision." So, listen in as Kirk and I talk about life-enhancing anxiety. Book Link: https://tinyurl.com/ycxekcx2

For our kickoff episode of our 3rd season, we're honored to present this touching, illuminating, and entertaining dialogue with 40-year veteran therapist Bob Edelstein, LMFT, in which he guides us through life's big questions (AKA existential themes) through an Existential-Humanistic lens. Bob shares his amazing story of coming of age as a human and therapist in the 1960s during the modern-to-postmodern shift. Highlights include his life-changing reading of Carl Rogers' Freedom to Learn as a teacher-in-training, being ripped apart by primal therapy, becoming a therapist through “the paraprofessional route”, working in the Haight, making space around the need to achieve, training with Jim Bugental and LSD researcher Stan Grof, and being ok with the idea of dying. Bob is such an authentic human being in every interaction, and you'll feel that come through as he teaches us about E-H through his own transforming views. If you're a fan of Carl Rogers, Maslow, Jim Bugental, Viktor Frankl, Kirk Schneider, Rollo May, and/or Irvin Yalom, this is the episode for you.Bob Edelstein, LMFT has been a therapist and consultant since 1973, practicing in Oregon since 1984. This week on The Transforming Anxiety Podcast I have another interview for you: this time with Dr. Kirk J. Schneider about his brand-new book, Life-Enhancing Anxiety...and can we talk about how amazing just that phrase is?? What if anxiety were life ENHANCING instead of, as he talks about, life DENYING? In this interview we explore: Life-denying anxiety - the pull towards black-and-white thinking and how keeping this mindset leads to dead-end living. How to counter life-denying anxiety - being more aware of the wonder and awe of life and engaging there instead of bombarding ourselves with fear and fairy tales. Life-enhancing anxiety - the kind of anxiety that "enables us to live with and make the best of the depth and mystery of existence." The tyranny of sameness - and how "the desire for sameness can actually be one of the most destructive aspects of being alive." How to move from anxiety to awe - and the importance of allowing ourselves to grapple with the discomfort of emotions like anxiety as a way to move towards real personal freedom. This is a rich conversation and I hope that you find it helpful. Join me for my discussion with Dr. Kirk Schneider in this week's episode... On episode 158, we welcome Kirk Schneider to discuss life-enhancing anxiety and how it differs from its everyday counterpart, Kirk's childhood trauma and his early relationship with his psychoanalyst, the existential unconscious and its inception at birth, the ways we tend to elude negative emotions (like boredom and anxiety), the necessity of forming a national mental health initiative, the ambiguity of existential psychotherapy and why it shouldn't pretend to answer life's fundamental questions, the existential ideal being more collectivistic rather than individualistic, and the importance of asking yourself: how am I living and how should I live? Kirk J. Schneider, Ph.D. is a leading spokesperson for contemporary existential-humanistic and existential-integrative psychology. A talk with Kirk Schneider, an existential-humanistic psychologist and therapist, and the author of many books, including Existential-Humanistic Therapy, Awakening to Awe, The Polarized Mind, and more. We talk about: how existential psychology is about facing the givens of life (e.g., fear of death, isolation, meaninglessness, freedom) and why that can be so helpful to people; how our society tends to avoid talking about these deep questions and stresses; the psychology that drives extreme polarization and narcissism; and more.
Dr. Kirk Schneider is a licensed clinical psychologist and author of many books, including The Psychology of Existence and The Paradoxical Self. Dr. Scheider is also a leading spokesperson for contemporary existential-integrative psychology. KIRK SCHNEIDER is an existential psychologist who is the source of my finding the book "The Denial of Death," by Ernst Becker, a stark and fearless look at man's denial of the ultimate. We talk about living a life of awe amongst the chaotic and mundane. Kirk talks about how the death of his older brother when Kirk was two years-old changed his family dynamic and set him on a quest to discover meaning. We also get into the influence 60's sci-fi TV had on us both -- and his thoughts on technology and robotics in shaping our future.
A discussion on existentialism and terrorism DescriptionThe robotic revolution is here and there s no going back. From the way we raise our children, to our work settings, to our governments, and even our wars, the quick fix-instant result society is roiling our world. Yet what is lost in this delirium is depth, the awesomeness, not just of our machines, but of our flesh, our capacity to feel, and our capacity to dwell in the miracle of the unknown. This book dwells in the miracle of the unknown. It is an intimate trek into the evolving spirituality of awe--the humility and wonder; sense of adventure toward life. Can we preserve awe--the arguable "heart" of humanity--in spite of and even in light of our technologies? Or will we devolve into mechanically driven puppets, numb to our possibilities, blind to our servitude? There is no more critical problem for our age."ReviewThe dehumanization of life in the new computer driven society...leads to a gradual death of feeling. When people are cut off from feeling they are more likely to act out in destructive and potentially violent behavior. In The Spirituality of Awe, Kirk Schneider elaborates the negative consequences of what he calls the Robotic Revolution. In this important book, the author offers an alternative in his conception of an awe-based psychology that emphasizes both the mystery and magnificence of existence. I am personally inspired by Schneider s concern and ethical approach to coping with the problem of maintaining one s human heritage in the new society. --Robert Firestone, Ph.D., author of Overcoming the Destructive Inner Voice: True Stories of Therapy and Transformation, and (with Joyce Catlett) Beyond Death Anxiety: Achieving Life-affirming Death AwarenessIn a world where many feel dehumanized and devalued, we need courage and clarity to widen our perspective and find new purpose. In this book Kirk Schneider offers a sensitive and incisive new narrative to help us reconsider what our lives are about today. He gathers wisdom from his long experience, and freely combines this with the insights of psychology, psychotherapy, philosophy, sociology, religion, literature and cinema to create a new vision of where we are heading and how we may change direction before it is too late. Fascinating and essential reading for therapists and lay readers alike. --Prof Emmy van Deurzen, PhD, Principal of the New School for Psychotherapy and Counseling, UK; author of Existential Psychotherapy and Counselling in Practice and Psychotherapy and the Quest for Happiness"...a beautiful and important work." --Pninit Russo-Netzer, PhD, Lecturer, University of Haifa; co-editor of Meaning in Positive and Existential PsychologyAbout the AuthorKirk Schneider, Ph.D., is an internationally renowned psychologist and author. What do a school shooter, a corporate swindler, and a bullheaded ideologue have in common?-They all converge on what author Kirk Schneider terms "the polarized mind." The polarized mind, which is the fixation on one point of view to the utter exclusion of competing points of view, is killing us-personally, politically, and environmentally. Drawing from the standpoint of existential psychology, this book details the basis for the polarized mind, how it has ravaged leaders and their cultures throughout history (up to and including our own time), and steps we urgently need to take to address the problem. These steps combine contemporary insights with centuries of cross-cultural, awe-inspired wisdom.
The polarized mind is the fixation on one point of view to the utter exclusion of competing points of view, is killing us—and has been for millennia. Combining contemporary insights with centuries of cross-cultural, awe-inspired wisdom, Schneider offers solutions to this worldwide problem. kirkjschneider.com
