C'est officiel, le cinéma en salles en France se porte bien. Le bilan annuel du CNC en atteste avec l'annonce de 181,3 millions d'entrées pour l'année 2024. Soit une reprise post-Covid dépassant toutes les espérances. Avec en bonus une pleine forme pour le cinéma français dont la part de marché surpasserait celle de l'américain. Tout juste si on ne s'autosacre pas champion du monde, en étant l'un des pays à la production locale la plus performante. A priori, les choses devraient même se renforcer au vu d'un agenda de sorties 2025 chargés en succès potentiels. La double hégémonie des films français et américains pourrait toutefois connaître des secousses. Depuis quelques années, le cinéma populaire indien tente une percée sur notre marché, avec un succès grandissant, au point que cette semaine, pas moins de sept films débarquent sur les écrans. Mélo ou film d'action, Polar ou comédie romantique, c'est autant une vitrine spectaculaire qu'une opération blitzkrieg, d'autant plus forte qu'elle a lieu à un moment où le cinéma indien est lui-même en train de bouger, d'un savoir-faire technique de très haut niveau à une part organique délaissée par les blockbusters US de plus en plus désincarnés, les films issus de Kollywood (la région de Madras) et Tollywood (celle d'Hyderabad) ont pris la main. Certains réalisateurs, comme Nikil Nagesh Bhat dont le Kill sorti ici l'été dernier, bottait sérieusement le cul à tous les John Wick ou S.S Rajamouli, tout auréolé du triomphe mondial de R.R.R jusqu'à avoir toqué à la porte des Oscars en 2023, sont déjà perçus comme l'égal d'un Spielberg ou d'un James Cameron. De Vanangaan à Game changer, il n'est pas dit que l'imposante salve de cette semaine inclue un tel phénomène, mais elle reste signe d'un mouvement qu'on ne peut plus négliger, ouvrant une aussi prometteuse que nouvelle Malle des indes.Mouvement aussi du côté de Pedro Almodóvar qui franchit l'Atlantique pour aller tourner son premier film en langue anglaise. La chose le titillait depuis que Femmes au bord de la crise de nerfs l'avait fait remarquer aux USA. Celles de La Chambre d'à côté sont en crise de conscience, lorsque la meilleure amie d'une romancière réapparait dans sa vie pour lui demander de l'assister dans son suicide programmé. Peut-être est-ce que parce que l'euthanasie est légalisée depuis 2021 en Espagne que le réalisateur est parti ailleurs pour aborder le sujet. Mais aussi en faire un film étonnamment paisible, sans doute trop, laissant les clés à un fantastique duo d'actrices, Julianne Moore et Tilda Swinton. En matière d'écriture ou de mise en scène, La Chambre d'à côté est en conduite automatique, noyé dans une déco glamour ou rien ne dépasse, obstacle à toute l'émotion nécessaire. Lit mortuaire trop bordé, sans un pli sur ses draps, cette chambre est un élégant salon d'esthète, qui confond toiles de maitres et copies, certes bien exécutées des tourments bergmaniens ou des teintes mélo d'un Douglas Sirk, mais qui manque terriblement d'âme pour raconter comment les proches des défunts continuent à respirer une fois leur dernier souffle rendu. Au point que l'on ait envie d'aller sur la pointe des pieds refermer la porte sur cette rutilante, mais impersonnelle parenthèse américaine.Nessipaya, Rekachitaram,Vanangaan, Daaku Maharaaj, Identity, Vidda Muyarchi, Game changer / La chambre d'à côté. Episode 4: NayakanRelease Date: 1987This episode features one of the ‘cult classics' of Indian cinema from one of the largest regional film industries in the country - the Tamil Film industry called Kollywood - (based out of the Kodambakkam neighborhood in Chennai, Tamil Nadu).Nayakan is a crime drama, written and directed by Mani Ratnam. Mani Ratnam today is heralded as one of the finest film directors in India. The film stars the great Kamal Haasan - one of the biggest superstars and finest actors in India, with support from Saranya (in her feature debut), Janagaraj, Delhi Ganesh, Nizhalgal Ravi, and Nassar. The story is loosely based on the life of the Bombay underworld Don Varadarajan Mudaliar and the American film The Godfather (1972). The movie became a critical and commercial success and won national awards for Kamal Haasan as best actor, PC Sreeram for best cinematography, and Thota Tharani for best art direction. It was India's official submission for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 60th Academy Awards, and was included in Time's list of the "All-Time 100 Best Films".This is Benny's all-time favorite movie. Minal watched this movie much later after its release as a teenager when regional films were telecast on the national channel on Sunday afternoons. 36 years down the line when they both sat down to discuss Nayakan - did they still stay in awe of this film and did it stand the test of time? First African Netflix animated series sets release dateNetflix has announced the release date for its first African animated series Supa Team 4. Set in Zambia, the plot revolves around four girls teaming up as superheroes in the city of Lusaka. With their grandmother aiding them in their missions as a mentor and their trusty high-tech gadgets, they battle dangerous villains across the city. The series is set to release on July 20th and is among several shows premiering in July celebrating African culture. 'Good Burger 2' announces sequel The cult classic comedy film Good Burger is getting a sequel, nearly 26 years after its release. Keenan Thompson and Kel Mitchell will reprise their roles as the lead stars, with Josh Server, Lori Beth Denberg, and Carmen Electra also returning for the sequel. The plot will follow Dexter Reed and Ed as they attempt to keep their fast-food business afloat in the modern socio-economic climate. The film is expected to release on streaming platforms this year.'Gattaca' reboot scrapped by ShowtimeAmerican cable network Showtime announced in March that the studio is rebooting the acclaimed sci-fi film Gattaca. The original film stars Ethan Hawke and Uma Thurman in lead roles, and the new reboot series roped in Emmy Award-winners Howard Gordon and Alex Gansa to helm the project. However, Showtime has announced that they will not be moving ahead with the project. The series is among the several shows being cancelled as the new leadership at the studio is reviewing all of their existing programs. The creators of the Gattaca reboot are currently looking for new partners to release the sci-fi series. 'Reservation Dogs' to end with the third season The critically-acclaimed FX original TV show Reservation Dogs has announced its third season will be the final season of the series. Created by Sterlin Harjo and Taika Waititi, the series first premiered in 2021 and revolves around the lives of a group of indigenous teenagers from a reservation in eastern Oklahoma. The third season will premiere on August 2nd and the series finale will be released on 27th September. The series is available to stream on Disney+ Hotstar in India. Pixar re-release classic titles in theatres for Disney 100Animation Studio Pixar has announced that three of its classic films are set to return to the big screens as part of the Disney 100 celebrations. Pixar's parent company Disney is celebrating its centennial anniversary this year and it is officially called Disney 100. Toy Story, The Incredibles, and Coco are the three iconic films that will be released in theatres between July and September. Disney also announced earlier this year that Toy Story 5 is in development.
