Was ist “Tollywood”? King Crimson - Cadence And Cascade (1970) There are versions with Greg Lake and Gordon Haskell singing lead floating around. Now the rarely heard version with Boz Burrell, who I think was being groomed as a kind of heartthrob in mid-60s England but ended up learning bass from Bob Fripp of King Crimson. Then he joined Bad Company and didn't sing a note. KC must have really believed in this song. Their second album was a virtual carbon copy of their first.  Don Potter - Unchain My Heart (1978)  Caravan - The Love in Your Eye (Live) (1974) A more energetic Moody Blues, a far better band than Barclay James Harvest, Caravan never reached any sort of appreciable sales, but they were pretty interesting. Using a full orchestra in the studio and live before even Renaissance, listening to them reminded me of that same old pop vs. prog de-evolution that so many prog bands ended up suffering.  Elizabeth C. Farrell for New York State Assembly (1968) Anti-hippie political campaign flexi-disc. Elizabeth C. (Betty) Farrell was a New York State Assembly candidate for the 138th district in 1968. Embryo - Wajang Woman (1976) Family - In My Own Time (1971) Family - The Weavers Answer (1970)  Sri Darwin Gross - With Eckankar(1972) Religion ruins everything. It's a constant scam with willing, gullible fools who keep pumping money and mindpower into what they hope is salvation of a permanent kind. But it's all a big grift. All of it.  And so it was with a fellow named Paul Twitchell, who started a loony off-shoot of Scientology called Eckankar. This was around 1964. When he died in 1971, his wife chose Darwin Gross as his successor. And this album was released. It's pretty high-quality backing for such a mediocre singer. Judge for yourself!  Family - Burlesque (1972) The bass player is our own prog god John Wetton! This was what he was doing between Mogul Thrash and King Crimson. I wonder if HE sang "Cadence and Cascade" at one time. This is a combination of boogie and prog if there ever was one. Wetton's playing style is instantly recognizable.  Frank Pellico - Shaft (1976) Pellico played the stadium organs for both the Chicago Cubs (Wrigley) and the Blackhawks (United Center). Funny Bone – Ride On Bones (1977) I love this record. Calvin Arnold recorded singles until the '80s. Worked with Fats Domino in 1970. I owe Fats a show.  Chatham - Hump Up (197?) Johnny Watson - Unchain My Heart (1967) Before recording his own hits in the '70s and doing stuff with early acolyte Frank Zappa, he was sort of like James Brown on this release, an instrumental album without the "Guitar" part in his name.  Lennie Macdonald - Sad City Woman (1975) Featuring Mike Giles on drums. You know. MICHAEL Giles, the first drummer for....King Crimson. The violin solo features Wilf Gibson, who played with Electric Light Orchestra on their first two albums. Wilf played on LOTS of stuff in the decade. Including CARAVAN, and, most notably, on Kiki Dee's most popular album, I've Got The Music In Me. That was released on Elton John's label.  The singer sounds just like Gerry Rafferty. Or vice-versa.  De Maskers - Unchain My Heart (1967) I should have played this, their 1965 collaboration with what must have been an increasingly desperate Chubby Checker. Next time. I just love this cover. De Maskers (The Masks) was a Dutch pop group. The mask gimmick lasted a year, maybe?  Streetwalkers - Me and Me Horse and Me Rum (1976) From Discogs: In 1974 Roger Chapman and Charlie Whitney formed a band with a fluid line up including Family and King Crimson members. They released an album "Chapman Whitney Streetwalkers" the same year. In 1975 guitarist and vocalist Bobby Tench from The Jeff Beck Group. They released three studio albums as Streetwalkers, before disbanding in 1977.  Also on this record: Wilf Gibson.  Boz - Isn't That So  (1966) Neoton Familia - California Dreamin' (1978) Hungarian disco for you.  NGC-4594 - Skipping Through the Night (1968) The name refers to the designation for the Sombrero Galaxy in the New General Catalogue of Nebulae and Clusters of Stars or NGC. I hate The Doors and their influence on bands that tried the same thing they were trying to do.  Painted Faces - Lost You In My Mind (1967) Chapman-Whitney - Parisienne High Heels (1974) Another collaboration featuring John Wetton and Michael Giles who played in different iterations of King Crimson. Great song. Roger Chapman's voice is a little offputting at first, but these songs are uniformly interesting.  Roger Chapman and The Shortlist - Prisoner (1981) More good stuff despite the cheesy '80s synth, and more John Wetton on bass.  Sakura (櫻花) - Papa's Got a Brand New Bag (1971) Shankar Ganesh - Coca Cola (198?) From the liner notes of the compilation: "Play That Beat Mr. Raja" is the very first compilation dedicated to Tamil recordings in the West. It explores the wild shores of these late 80's Kollywood music productions. With an avalanche of cinematic strings, analog synths, mind-blowing vocal punchlines, and drumkit earthquakes mixed with folkloric percussive elements, it reveals the audacity of composers such as Ilayaraja, Shankar Ganesh, or Hamsalekha. Covering an impressive range of styles, it features Kamal Hassan's vocoded rap "Vikram Vikram", Shankar Ganesh's disco stomper "Coca Cola", and the irresistible Bontempi instrumental "Love Theme", among many other hits. Straddling boundaries between traditional southern Indian identity and digested western influences, these selected oddities remain a lesson of creativity and freedom in the world of soundtracks, with their stunning incorporation of the most typical of 80s tools in a classical context, and constant love for daring structures and demented arrangements. Sri Darwin Gross - At The Grassroots (1972) You are Soul, an eternal, creative being. Unlimited. Divine. Does something inside you long to know life’s purpose? To make sense of the world around you? Eckankar is an active, individual, creative spiritual practice. A companion and road map for your journey home—to the heights of Self-Discovery and God-Discovery, and beyond. Come along and discover the most secret part of yourself. The key to spiritual freedom lies within you. Shigeko Toya - Unchain My Heart (1973)  Mell Martin - Space Oddity (1980) Sri Darwin Gross - It Just Is! (1972)

AR Rahman is known as the ‘Mozart of Madras’ and for good reason. He has won two Academy Awards, two Grammy Awards, a BAFTA Award, a Golden Globe, four National Film Awards, 15 Filmfare Awards. Perhaps most incredibly he has crossed film genres, languages, nationality and film industries across the globe, conquering Bollywood, Hollywood and Kollywood. It is 10 years since the debut of Slumdog Millionaire but Rahman’s songs still linger in the imagination. Rahman is prolific and instinctual; working not just as a musical director but now as producer, director, teacher and visual artist. To each project he brings a touch of magic whether it be his latest virtual reality film Musk, his incredible catalogue of Hindi and Tamil film scores, global pop hits such as Jai Ho or in his superstar collaborations such as Super Heavy with Mick Jagger, Dave Stuart, Joss Stone and Damian Marley. Lifelong fan, producer and DJ Bobby Friction meets Rahman as he reaches the end of his 2018 US tour in Houston, Texas. We learn how the melodies he creates alone in the quiet of night are recreated by a cast of India’s greatest singers and musicians and performed to entertain thousands across America. For Rahman, and Bobby, music is God. Spirituality is deeply entwined with the process of composition for both men and together they will explore some of the tracks which resonate with their belief in the true power of music.

Hi everyone! It’s Friday, so it’s time for another Fantastic Fest feature from Andrew Campbell. This week will feature absolutely no BS. No wait, I’m sorry, this film will be full of BS, and I mean actual bullshit. Not a bunch of lies and stories for which the term bullshit is used, but actual bullshit, along with actual bulls, who have an actual prize tied to their horns called... JALLIKATTU! Don’t miss Andrew’s other recent reviews for THE CALL OF THE WILD (Episode #726), BLISS (Episode #723), and SCHOOL’S OUT (Episode #716). Before the review, we’ll have a promo from our good friends at the Moviedrone podcast. Here we go! ///// > ///// Hello film fans! Andrew here, back today with wild film out of India. When discussing the Indian and American film markets, people generally compare Bollywood versus Hollywood. When you get into the weeds on these terms, Bollywood refers specifically to films produced in Mumbai (which was known as Bombay when the term “Bollywood” was originally coined). Now, the term has taken on more of a colloquial meaning to describe the sum total of all films produced in the country, which includes smaller studio markets such as Tollywood and Kollywood among others. Likewise, “Hollywood films” once referred to movies made in the L.A. suburb that housed most of the major film studios, but now typically refers to American films made anywhere in the country but within the larger studio system, which excludes independent films. Hey Joseph, you’re gonna fact check all this, right? JOSEPH: “Seems legit.” In any case, there were roughly one thousand films released in the United States last year and roughly double that figure in India. Let’s see if we can figure out why this one broke out of the herd and got picked up by Fantastic Fest. Today’s movie is JALLIKATTU (2019), written by R. Jayakumar & Hareesh S., and directed by Lijo Jose Pellissery. The film stars Antony Varghese as Varkey, the lone butcher in a remote Indian village. Varkey is preparing a buffalo for slaughter when the massive animal breaks free and runs rampage through the town and surrounding jungle. With the buffalo wreaking havoc, the women and children take shelter while the men attempt to recapture the beast. Mobs begin to form and the petty squabbles that have existed between the men of the village for years get in the way of the task at hand. The film opens with a little bit of character work, giving us a soft introduction to a number of the villagers. However, once the buffalo breaks loose, the film quickly descends into chaos. Maybe it’s cultural differences, or the way the story spends the next hour shunting between one chaotic scene to the next, or the exponential growth of extras as more and more men show up, but I lost track of all the main characters and their collective personal dramas. This left me fairly bored and all but disengaged for the bulk of the film’s runtime. Nearly every moment of the film is filled with men talking over each other, men shouting at one another, or men abusing their spouses. The film stampedes the viewer with constant cacophony… but maybe that’s the point. Stepping back and looking at the movie from a distance, it’s clear that the film was not made with the western audience in mind and the creators were probably pleasantly surprised to see it picked up by TIFF (the Toronto International Film Festival), Fantastic Fest, and likely others. With that in mind, it’s probably more fair to grade this one on a curve and view it as an outsider looking into a massive country with a vibrant cinema scene that I know nothing about. In the film itself, every time a character smokes or drinks alcohol, a “warning label” (for lack of a better term) appears noticeably on screen to warn the audience against the danger of such vices. The film simply comes from a far different world than I am used to. What JALLIKATTU gets right is the one thing that easily translates into any language - that sweet, sweet buffalo action. There are several scenes where you get real shots of the massive animal running around doing its own thing, but there’s a great mix of practical effects as well. There are some thrilling third-person shots that any fans of the indie video game Goat Simulator are certain to enjoy. Then the film sprinkles in some buffalo cam shots as the viewer bounds around and sends villagers flying. Were this an American film, you know it would all be CGI, but the live action stunt-work here is what makes the film worth sticking with through some of the rough patches. What makes JALLIKATTU fantastic? The ending of this film... absolutelygoes for it. What felt like a fairly realistic depiction of the more toxic aspects of masculinity in the Indian culture transcends into something so outlandish that it may literally be jaw-dropping. If you give this one a shot and find yourself losing interest during the protracted second act, just ensure that you zoom ahead and check out the last 15 minutes for a startling visual metaphor. JALLIKATTU is a step outside the comfort zone for American audiences that delivers a dull roar punctuated by the occasional violent hoofbeat. Fans of films that descend into surreal chaos such as TUMBBAD (Episode #432), CLIMAX (Episode #459), or MOTHER! (Episode #245) will enjoy this film. Rotten Tomatoes: 93% Metacritic: NR One Movie Punch: 6.2/10 JALLIKATTU (2019) is not rated and is now streaming now Amazon Prime Video. Come back next Friday for a light-hearted midnight horror flick appropriately titled AFTER MIDNIGHT. This movie showcases what a filmmaker can do on a shoestring budget. It’s equal parts Deep South break-up drama and psychological terror with a monster in the woods that may or may not actually exist. I promise it’s a fun one. See you then!

Building a Brand Outside The Multiplex feat. Ashwin Kakumanu

The Tamil film industry, commonly referred to as Kollywood, is a difficult place to break into and navigate as an artist. Nepotism is a mainstay, misinformation and competing interests regularly run amok, and projects can get stalled at every step of production. How does an actor stay sane in this crazy place? How can he chart a career when so many factors influencing it are out of his control? And how can he maintain a healthy balance between his public image and his personal life? These are the questions we discuss with actor Ashwin Kakumanu today. Ashwin has been working in Kollywood since 2011, when he acted in Nadunisi Naaygal (trans: Midnight Dogs, 2011). He then went on to work with established stars like Ajith (Mankatha) and Surya (7aum Arivu, trans: Seventh Sense), after which he branched out into leading projects himself in films like Megha (2014) and Zero (2016). He recently starred in one of the first Tamil webseries in the industry - Nila Nila Odi Vaa (2018) - available for viewing on the streaming platform Viu. Our discussion with Ashwin is a deep dive into Ashwin's journey in cinema, from starting out a huge Star Wars buff to short filmmaker to actor, and it's also an honest discussion of the challenges he has faced in the industry. He also discusses his move into the digital space - he's working on another webseries - and how he's building his brand outside the multiplex. It's a candid look at Kollywood from someone who has made a career in it over the last eight years. We hope you enjoy listening to it as much as we did. This discussion gets into SPOILERS for SUPER DELUXE. You have been warned. After making us wait for 8 years after his cult first feature AARANYA KAANDAM, Thiagarajan Kumararaja returns to the big screen with SUPER DELUXE. Starring Vijay Sethupathi, Samantha Akkineni, Fahadh Faasil, Mysskin, Ramya Krishnan, few Tamil films outside of the blockbuster mainstream have been as hotly anticipated and as immediately dissected online. And just with his first film, Kumararaja is not one to dance to Kollywood's tune. Sindhu and Nikhil dig into SUPER DELUXE by first contextualizing why the film has been this awaited, then jumping into all the layers that we were able to find the first time around. We also mention: Baradwaj Rangan's excellent review and Raja Sen's Twitter review of the film, both of which are great post-viewing resources. Magnolia, Amores Perros, Babel, Wild Tales - multinarrative/hyperlink films that Super Deluxe is similar to in structure.
