In this episode, Shana talks to Surabhi Yadav, the creator of Women At Leisure, an Instagram account filled with 7 years of pictures and videos of women simply at leisure - having a cup of chai, climbing a tree, playing football. For Surabhi, time is a feminist issue, which lays bare the many oppressions of caste, class and the invisibility of women's work. They also discuss the backstory about how Women at Leisure came to be. After Surabhi's mother, Basanti, passed away, Surabhi set out to keep her memory alive by asking aunts and her mother's friends to share her stories. The person they described in story after story was a funny prankster, adjectives that did not come to mind when Surabhi thought of her mother. Who was her mother, when she was not busy managing a large family? This inspired Surabhi to create Women at Leisure as a kind of ongoing conversation with her mother. This conversation led Shana to also share why she created Her Kajal Won't Smudge. The similarities in Surabhi and Shana's journeys are a reflection of just how life brings two people together in ways that can be so unexpected and yet so in harmony. THIS EPISODE FEATURES AN IN-DEPTH analysis of the 2006 Hindi film, Rang De Basanti as a vehicle of Communist propaganda that has three primary purposes: pushing the age-old anti-India agenda, driving the anti-Hindu narrative and targeting the BJP.The movie follows the familiar communist template of using art, literature, poetry, drama and cinema to propagandise communism among the Indian masses. Rang de Basanti was a huge blockbuster when it was released and acquired a semi-cult status especially among the urban Indian youth. However, its commercial success was largely because it drew a historical parallel with five revolutionary Indian fighters: Chandrashekhar Azad, Bhagat Singh, Ramprasad Bismil, Ashfaquallah Khan, and Shivram Rajguru and juxtaposed them with five youths of contemporary India. This parallel was achieved by twisting the facts of history and presenting the historical revolutionaries as communist heroes, which they were not. The distortion of history is done to push a specific narrative of equating the colonial British rule of India with a constitutionally elected government of independent India. The propaganda in Rang de Basanti thus works at multiple levels all aimed at the same goal: of advocating a violent overthrow of the Indian government. This podcast episode gives a broad historical background of the origins and methods of communist propaganda in India and provides specific points on how these methods are used in Rang De Basanti. Diamond Shumsher Rana (डायमनशमशेर राणा) was born at Tansen Durbar in Palpa, where his grandfather, Sher Shumshere Jung Bahadur Rana, was governor. His father Buddha Shumshere Jung Bahadur Rana was a colonel in the Royal Nepal Army.Rana enjoyed a privileged upbringing and was a captain in the Royal Nepal Army. In 1948 Rana travelled to Benaras, India and had his first novel Basanti published. In Nepal, he had aligned himself with an anti-establishment faction of the Rana regime and was arrested, court-martialled and sentenced to death but was later freed after members of the Rana family pressured the regime for his release. Rana later joined the political opposition and was a member of the Nepali Congress Party from 1954 to 1987. ‘Seto Bagh', meaning ‘White Tiger', 1973, revolves around the life of the Jagat Jung Rana, the eldest son of Jung Bahadur Rana. The plot is set around the time when Jung Bahadur Rana was in power and after his demise. It has been translated into French, English and Japanese. The novel describes Jung Bahadur Rana losing his grip over the control of the palace and also the fall of his sons and the rise of his nephews to power. However, the novel is like a sequel to Diamond's previous novel ‘Basanti' where he wrote about the rise of Jung Bahadur along with his love life. Seto Bagh is more like a biography of Jagat Jung. It describes the love relation between Jagat Jung and the Princess, the daughter of King Surendra Bikram Shah. The novel starts with the mention of ongoing war between Nepal and Tibet. As the war proceeds, the love story between the two goes along. It describes the emotional state of Jagat Jung as he fights the urge to accept the Princess' love. The fear of being called a sinner and cheat for stealing his cousin's fiancé being greater than the courage of accepting his own feelings for her, he tries his best to make her hate him. However, with the help of their cousins and the support of their family, they are married. Although his love life becomes successful, his chances of being the heir of the Prime Minister' position (Shree 3 Maharaj) were dimmed. The story proceeds with the downfall of the bright and talented Jagat Jung and rise of his cousins. It tells how the sons of Dhir Shumsher Rana massacred their own clan in cold blood (Uncle and sons of Jung Bahadur Rana) for the power.

This is my raw attempt at a hauntingly beautiful song from the famous Hindi film 'Rang de Basanti' (2006). The poignant lyrics expressing a mother's love for a lost son, who has sacrificed his young life in the pursuit of noble goals of social and political revolution, are by Prasoon Joshi and the unusual, intricate musical composition is a fine example of A.R. Rahman's eclectically harmonious style. The song in the film is a duet, a dialogue between mother (singer Lata Mangeshkar) amd son (singer A.R. Rahman). My amateur solo rendition is a simplified version accompanied by an electronic Tanpura.

Namaste! Bhagavad Gita has inspirations to change our life. Do we know in human psychological personality, who is the boss? Why are human being's superior to animals? And importantly, what is our self-identity? Sloka 42 from Chapter 2 summarizes this very wisdom. इन्द्रियाणि पराण्याहुरिन्द्रियेभ्य: परं मन: | मनसस्तु परा बुद्धिर्यो बुद्धे: परतस्तु स: || 2.42|| BG 3.42: The senses are superior to the gross body, and superior to the senses is the mind. Beyond the mind is the intellect, and even beyond the intellect is the soul. You must watch Rang de Basanti to understand the true meaning of this sloka. The movie portrays Aamir Khan and his four friends as cynical, carefree and totally wasted, BUT are inspired after their close friend dies when his fighter plane malfunctions and crashes. Their sense of ‘self-identity' shifts, changing their very life! They become motivated by a higher goal, because of this incident. Leaving their hedonistic lifestyle, they become revolutionaries to take action. Suddenly, the attitude of eat-sleep-be-merry, don't care for anyone other than oneself goes away. They are inspired by the idea of ‘get rid of corruption' just like Mahatma Gandhi, who was inspired by an idea of ‘freedom for India'. Bhagavan Krishna tells us that there is a gradation to human personality and asks us to evaluate where our self-identity predominantly lies: sensual enjoyment driven life is at the lower end of the human spectrum. We are no different from animals in this aspect. Living the life of emotions, feelings is higher to sensual enjoyment. But that is not all. Living the life of ideas, rational thoughts, concepts – like Rang de Basanti depicts in the transformation the friends go through is higher than emotionally driven life. Gita real teaching starts where the movie stops. Beyond the intellect is the soul – Atma, and re-aligning our thoughts, emotions, to that is the best way of living life. Our 4th Bollywood film, how does this one stack up against the others? After a group of friends graduate from Delhi University, they listlessly haunt their old campus, until a British filmmaker (Alice Patten) casts them in a film she's making about freedom fighters under British rule. Although the group is largely apolitical, the tragic death of a friend owing to local government corruption awakens their patriotism. Inspired by the freedom fighters they represent in the film, the friends collectively decide to avenge the killing. Favorite line- "Everything's falling apart and all I can do is watch." Mystery Line "Roads? Where we're going we don't need roads." If you could leave us a review to let us know how we are doing that would be great! Also share the show with your friends! It's been 13 years since Rang De Basanti hit theaters. Listen-in as we look back at the movie and offer a fresh perspective by bringing back a recurring guest, Bo Zhang, who may or may not (definitely not) have seen more than 2 Bollywood movies in his entire life.Synopsis: After a group of friends graduate from Delhi University, they listlessly haunt their old campus, until a British filmmaker (Alice Patten) casts them in a film she's making about freedom fighters under British rule. Although the group is largely apolitical, the tragic death of a friend owing to local government corruption awakens their patriotism. Inspired by the freedom fighters they represent in the film, the friends collectively decide to avenge the killing.Cast: Aamir KhanSiddharthSharman JoshiSoha Ali KhanKunal Kapoor

Hosted by Andrew Quinn and Darren Mooney, and this week with special guest Giovanna Rampazza and Babu Patel, The 250 is a (mostly) weekly trip through some of the best (and worst) movies ever made, as voted for by Internet Movie Database Users. New episodes are released every Saturday at 6pm GMT, with the occasional bonus episode thrown in. This year, we are proud to announce Indian Summer, a fortnight looking at two of the Indian films on the list. We hope to make this an annual event. This year, we'll be covering Rajkumar Hirani's PK and Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra's Rang De Basanti. This week, we're discussing the second of those two films, Rang de Basanti. A documentary filmmaker Susan travels to India in order to produce a documentary about the daring Kakori Train Robbery in August 1925. While there, she strikes up a friendship with an unlikely group of listless young students who are looking for purpose and meaning within their own lives. At time of recording, it was ranked the 195th best movie of all-time on the Internet Movie Database.
