El tipo de motor más extendido es el cuatro cilindros en línea, podríamos considerarlo casi como el “motor universal”. Algunas marcas han mantenido los 4 cilindros, pero opuestos, los llamados bóxer, como en caso de Alfa Romeo y Subaru entre otras… Pero ¿no hay V4? Sí. Sí los ha habido, pocos, muy pocos, pero a mí me gustan mucho. Hoy hablaremos de técnica y de 11 coches que los han llevado. Pero antes de comenzar la primera pregunta que surge es, ¿cuál es la forma más lógica de colocar 4 cilindros? Si hablamos de consideraciones puramente técnicas cada configuración tienen ventajas e inconvenientes. Un motor de 4 en línea tiene un buen equilibrado, vibra poco, es compacto y si queremos evolucionarlo es sencillo, basta añadir dos cilindros… o solo uno… ¡o quitarle uno y añadir árboles de equilibrado! En Garaje Hermético te contamos ambas cosas en los vídeos “Motores de 3 cilindros, ¡no me quites 1” y “Motores de 5 cilindros, ¿Equilibrio perfecto?”. Vamos con los bóxer. Su mayor ventaja es también su equilibrado y añaden otra, un muy bajo centro de gravedad, todo el peso va cerca del suelo. Pero ocupan mucho más espacio, menos en altura, pero más en superficie. Incluso más que un cuatro cilindros en línea tumbado, que es una solución habitual… porque casi todos los motores de 4 cilindros van inclinados, unos poco y otros mucho. Pero si quieres evolucionar un motor 4 cilindros bóxer o te quedas en 2 o te vas a 6, porque bóxer de tres cilindros no hay... en coches, porque en motos de 2T sí los hubo… Y llegamos al V4, que tiene la variante de su ángulo entre cilindros que puede ser mayor o menor. Según lo cerremos o lo abramos obtendremos un motos más compacto o más equilibrado. Lo cierto es que un motor V4, para ir transversal, es una buena solución por su compacidad… Y en cuanto a evolucionarlo, hay motores V5, pero que llegan desde un V6 quitando un cilindro, pero haberlo, “haylos”. V3 en coche, que yo sepa, no. De hecho, cuando las marcas han recurrido a la configuración V4 en muchos casos lo que buscaban era un motor compacto y pequeñito. Vibran más y sobre todo diferente y su sonido a mí me cautiva, resulta más musical que en 4 en línea. 11 ejemplos. Os he hecho una selección de coches con motor V4 y veréis que hay coches notables, algunos, y con mucha personalidad, casi todos. Vamos con la lista que he ordenado en orden cronológico. 1. Mors 24/32 (1904) 2. Lancia Lambda (1922) 3. Ford Mustang 1 (1962) 4. Ford Taunus (1964) 5. Lancia Fulvia (1965) 6. Matra 530 (1967) 7. Saab 96 (1967) 8. ZAZ-968 (1968) 9. Ford Capri (1969) 10. ZAZ IuAz (1971) 11. Porsche 919 Hybrid (2014) Conclusión. Como ha demostrado Porsche, la configuración V4 es viable. Especialmente cuando no hay mucho espacio, porque su mayor virtud es la compacidad… Pero hay algo que no hemos dicho antes, su principal inconveniente: Es más caro de fabricar un V4 que un 4 en línea y hoy en día, el dinero, cuenta mucho… una pena. Como Coche del Día hemos elegido al Lancia Fulvia, en concreto, el 1.600 HF “Fanalone”.

A judge on the concours circuit, he has his own collection with a “friend of the friendless” theme that includes less-than-concours examples of the Mk 1 Lotus-Ford Cortina, Hillman Imp, and Lancia Fulvia, as well as more Peugeots than he is willing to publicly disclose. Der Lancia Stratos – Rallyekeil und Kultmaschine Wer jemals das Vergnügen hat, in einem Lancia Stratos zu sitzen wird feststellen, wie klein der aggressive Keil doch eigentlich ist: kürzer als ein Golf 1 mit einem Radstand, der kaum länger ist als beim Mini Serie 1. Trotzdem ist der Stratos einer der ganz Großen, zumindest in der Kategorie Traumauto. Angetrieben von dem Ferrari-V6 aus dem Dino 246 GT hatte er in der zahmen Straßenversion schon 190 PS, was für 6,8 Sekunden von 0 auf 100 reichte. Es gab ihn sogar als Turbo, dann aber als reines Wettbewerbsfahrzeug, mit satten 560 PS. Das eigentlich einzigartige am Stratos ist, dass er rein für Wettbewerbe konzipiert wurde und nie als Serienauto gedacht war. Lange Jahre prägte er entsprechend die Rallye-Weltmeisterschaft und andere Rennserien, bis er dann auf Drängen von Fiat, der Konzernmutter von Lancia, nicht weiter an den Start geschickt wurde. Bis dahin hatte er aber auch schon alles gewonnen, was es zu gewinnen gab. Das gilt auch für die Herzen von Olli, Frederic und Ron. Während Olli natürlich von den Klappscheinwerfern schwärmt und darüber philosophiert, ob er mit 1,90m wohl zu groß für den kleinen Boliden ist, ist Frederic vor allem begeistert von Form und Funktionalität des damaligen aggressiven Keil-Designs. Für Ron ist es einfach nur ein absoluter Traumwagen und man spürt förmlich, wie er gerne röhrend mit dem Rennzwerg durch eine 30er Zone heizen würde. Das Fulvia Coupé – Lancias sportliches Leichtgewicht Die Fulvia, wie der Enthusiast sagt, ist vor allem als Coupé ein echter Hingucker. Was viele nicht wissen: die Fulvia war auch das letzte Auto aus dem Hause Lanica, das den Namen einer Römerstraße trug. Als Lancia 1969 von Fiat gekauft wurde, war es aus mit den Straßennamen und das griechische Alphabet hielt mit dem Nachfolger Lancia Beta Einzug. Das Fulvia Coupé aber lässt noch heute die Freunde kleiner italienischer Sportwagen höher schlagen. Kein Wunder: Lancia hatte immer auch die Motorsportkarriere des kleinen Flitzers im Sinn. Vor allem im Rallyesport war der Renner sehr erfolgreich. Tim Stansmore went from cats to classic cars in his retirement. Tim built a successful “Cattery” during his working career. What is a “Cattery”? Good question because I didn't know either until I listened to this interview. A Cattery is a boarding establishment for cats. Tim didn't just build any cat boarding facility, this was the Taj Maj Hal for cats. Ironically, Tim is allergic to cats. Tim and Henry talk about some of the hilarious stories of the owners of the cats. Tim says in the interview, if he was to write a book, it would be on the cat's owners and not the cats themselves. So how does Tim go from cats to classic cars? After 10 years, Tim sold his business and bought a property on the east side of Melbourne Australia. The property came with a garage, a huge shed, and an aircraft hangar. This would end up being perfect for him to store his many classic cars and motorcycles. This guy knows his stuff when it comes to cars and motorcycles! Tim and Henry talk about they many cars and bikes he has collected including a 1926 Model T Ford, 1930 Model A Ford, 1971 Lancia Fulvia and many more. Tim likes to buy cars, restore them and then trade or sell them for a small profit. Unless he gets attached to a car and cannot bear to part with it once it is finished. However, for Tim, it's not really about the money. It's about saving the cars. Old cars and motorcycles are Tim's passion. It is a lot of work but as Tim says “if you enjoy what you are doing, it's not really a job”. Tim tells a story of a car he bought and sold the same day. He owned the car for a total of 15 minutes and made a decent profit from it. So what's next for Tim? He is going to sell off his fleet and buy more of course!
