I sat down with my good friend Zarna Garg, and what unfolded was a raw, unfiltered conversation about rejection, resilience, and rewriting your story — even when it feels like the world just slammed a door shut.Zarna is one of the funniest, most driven people I know. Her story proves it.We talk about:

After just a few short years within the industry, Zarna Garg has comedic achievements most could only dream of. When Garg isn't touring the world with her show, she's performing 15 times a week at New York City's Comedy Cellar, all while creating content for her 709k TikTok followers. Just last week, her brand-new comedy special, Zarna Garg: One in a Billion, premiered on Prime Video. But this hasn't always been Garg's life and career. After immigrating to the U.S. as a teenager to avoid an arranged marriage, Garg went on to practice civil litigation law before stepping away to become a stay-at-home mom to her three kids. She eventually decided to write a screenplay called Rearranged—which beat out 11,000 other scripts to win the Top Comedy Screenplay Award at Austin Film Festival in 2019—before eventually pursuing a new career path as a performer.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Zarna Garg is one in a billion, an Indian immigrant mom stand-up comedian who believes brown women everywhere have a right to laugh at anything and anyone they want–including the sacred cows: brown men and their mothers. This week her Amazon Prime special dropped, taking the comedy world by storm with her perspectives on matchmaking, entitled kids, clueless husbands and tyrannical mother in laws. She is a regular at the iconic Comedy Cellar and Carolines on Broadway in NYC, has performed in Vegas and the famed Kennedy Center, and is touring nationwide in 2022. A TikTok comedy sensation with over 100 million views and 510.7k followers (and growing FAST), Zarna won Kevin Hart's Lyft Comics comedy competition on Peacock and the 2021 Ladies of Laughter Newcomer Award. She also won the Top Comedy Feature Screenplay Award at the 2019 Austin Film Festival and was a Nicholl Fellowships Semi-Finalist. This episode originally aired on January 22, 2023. This week on Unorthodox, are the Muppets Jewish? Our Jew of the Week is Ruth Markel, whose son, Dan Markel, was murdered in 2014 (the case is featured on the first season of the podcast Over My Dead Body). She joined us to discuss the book she's written about dealing with the trauma of losing a son to murder, as well as becoming an activist against grandparent alienation. Our Gentile of the Week is comedian Zarna Garg, who tells us how her experience as an Indian immigrant influences her comedy, as well as the role of funny Jewish moms in her comedy journey. Her question for the hosts is a spicy one: how do Jewish parents feel about their kids dating outside the religion? We love to hear from you!
