David B. Metcalfe, Windbridge Institute Scholar in Virtual Residence, is a researcher, writer, and multimedia specialist focusing on areas where creativity, culture, and consciousness collide. In 2011 he established the Liminal Analytics: Applied Research Collaborative to focus on building multidisciplinary lines of communication through applied scholarship, digital media, and social network development. David's work has appeared in Oxford University Press and other peer reviewed anthologies. He was a research assistant for the University of Chicago under Dr. Hussein Ali Agama focusing on archival research, and he is currently the Editor-in-Chief for the Windbridge Research Center's Threshold: Journal of Interdisciplinary Consciousness Studies.I originally had asked both Dr. Diana Pasulka and David to join me for this episode, but due to scheduling conflicts, Diana had to decline. (I am eager to talk with Diana at another time, however!) In this episode, David talks a bit about his background and his interest in the broader topic of ‘anomalous phenomena,' and how this led him to meet Dr. Diana Pasulka and become involved in planning the course “Beyond the Stars” with her. This groundbreaking course explores the history of UFO/UAP phenomena, specific case studies, the main research traditions, and also how religion and esotericism are linked to this phenomena. The course also delves into the related areas of consciousness studies and theories of synchronicity/coincidence. David also shares his reflections/takeaways regarding the course and the participants, the gradual shift in attitudes surrounding this type of phenomena, and what he thinks is ‘the bigger picture' regarding anomalous experiences. We also go on a few related tangents regarding memory, false memory syndrome, owls, and how popular culture absorbs and transmits ideas about high strangeness. Everything is connected. Send us a Text Message. What is school for, and are exam grades a good measure of a human? Does someone's grades tell us what we should know, or are we being misled? Do grades help children grow and engage with learning, or do they simply destroy interest and entrench social divisions? These are the sort of questions that perplex many of us who are parenting teenagers. It's coming to the end of summer in the UK which means there's been a wave of exam results and the beautifully timed release of a terrific book called Exam Nation; why our obsession with grades fails everyone. Written by Sammy Wright, Headteacher of a secondary school in the North of England and part of the UK government's Social Mobility Commission for several years it was chosen by the BBC as book of the week, and applauded by reviewers across the serious newspapers in the UK, and I even found it laugh out loud funny at times. In this interview we talk about what school is for, the difficult transition from junior to secondary education, the need for tests and the way in which we view grades. Sammy offers up thought about other ways of looking at schooling which he thinks has become too transactional and would serve us better if it were more focused on the whole person.https://twitter.com/SamuelWright78https://www.amazon.co.uk/Exam-Nation-Obsession-Grades-Everyone/dp/1847927521/ref=tmm_hrd_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&qid=&sr=Support the Show. Thanks for listening. Welcome to the Summer Series! I'm going to be doing a series of solo shows on topics and questions I get through the summer, packaged up into bite-sized, easy-to-consume episodes for those of you enjoying your summer vacation.Today I am talking all about my journey of becoming a dually certified SLP, BCBA, a unicorn certification of less than 500 people in the entire world! Over my 20+ year career, I've gained some wisdom and learned some lessons that I want to share with you.I started my career as an SLP in a school setting. There I had my first opportunity to work with autistic learners and I loved getting the opportunity to see these amazing breakthroughs. But when I changed jobs to a clinical setting and had my first experience with ABA…I was lit up. We were working with learners who had traditionally been difficult to reach and helping them communicate for the very first time. As a provider, I felt true joy for these learners but also feelings of sadness that they had gone so long without access to their environment through communication when they really didn't have to.As I conclude this mini-episode, I share the time-consuming course work, resources, and testing that went into becoming a certified BCBA 12 years ago. I share this with you because I believe in the power of ABA to create a world where all students have a way to communicate and access their environment.#autism #speechtherapyWhat's Inside:Wisdom and lessons from a 20+ year career in SLP and Behavior Analysis. How did Rose become dually certified?Time consuming coursework and resources involved in becoming a BCBAMentioned In This Episode:Membership - ABA Speech
We use the term 'trauma informed' in education ALOT - but what does it actually look, sound and feel like on the ground in the classroom? Trauma informed practices centre more around a state of 'being, rather than doing' and it comes back to our own nervous system regulation, and our ability to "See the child NOT the behaviour." It means that we use responsive practices, rather than punitive. We also fundamentally know that our role is to offer behaviour support, not sanctions when kids are distressed or overwhelmed. You can buy Rebecca's book "Safe to Learn" here: https://ambapress.com.au/products/safe-to-learn You can learn more about the Berry Street Educational Model here: https://www.berrystreet.org.au/learning-and-resources/berry-street-education-model/training-courseWork with Chrissie Davies - Child Behaviour Specialist here: www.chaostocalmconsultancy.com
The podcast episode featuring professors from various universities discussing PhD programs in Adapted Physical Education (APE). Dr. Andrew Pitchford from Oregon State University started by highlighting the importance of their interdisciplinary connections between the adapted physical activity program and other departments, such as the Psychological Science Program and the global health department. Oregon State's program has five faculty members that can use their unique backgrounds to advise their graduate students. Other things that Oregon State has to offer students is their adaptive exercise clinic, community outreach, and fellowship opportunities through the federal government. Next, members of the University of South Carolina spoke about their program, mentioning that a strength of their program is their core group of faculty with specific interests in adapted physical education and activity. The program is organized into four types of experiences: knowledge, teaching, scholarship and service. Students have the opportunity to teach courses independently, successfully complete their dissertation, and co-author research manuscripts among other things. Then, Nicole Kirk from the University of Georgia spoke on their PhD program that features a focus in adapted physical education. The program also houses a sport instruction research lab that works on lifespan physical activity among other topics. Another important aspect of their work is community outreach, which is accomplished by hosting events such as field days with kids from all over the state of Georgia. Coursework is offered in the areas of APA, PE, and parasport training. Finally, a representative of the University of Illinois spoke on their PhD program for Adapted Physical Activity. They are featured within the pedagogy and physical activity program, with a focus in pedagogical kinesiology. The Kinesiology Lab is the centerpiece of their curriculum, which allows students to study PE workforce development, experiences of children with and without disabilities in physical education, and social and emotional learning of all children.

I overheard some teachers talking in a coffee shop a while ago...and I while I sat listening to them...offended...I also thought about how we (meaning you...and me!) can persuade them to think a little deeper. So today on the podcast, it's a bit different-because it's story telling time! Both in how staff learns behavior management (-or not-), and my own story of creating some change with a kiddo with "behaviors." We also tackle: -Why ABA in the schools is such a big deal. -What is PBIS? -And how we can actually have changing ideals from behavior being "dealt with" to changing the perspective to equal more and unique support needs? So is this week's episode excusing the archaic nature of schools and behavior? Absolutely not! Will it create an "ah-hah" moment that allows you to craft your questions and support requests in a way that makes staff question if "what they've always done" is really the best way? I sure hope so! Our conversation today with Guy Curtis from Laurel Ridge Community College included Dr. Craig Santicola, Dean of Professional Programs to talk about their new drone programs. Craig explained the lengthy process for receiving formal approval for the programs and told us how the programs are structured. He told us that sUAS/Drone operators are in demand by a variety of industries with potential commercial uses in disaster response, police, fire, EMS response and investigation, search and rescue, scientific research, agriculture, farming, ranching, land, livestock, and wildlife surveys, pipeline and power line inspection, industrial and residential inspection, delivery and transport, and aerial photography. We talked about Advanced Air Mobility and the important role it will play nationally as well as on a regional level. The Small Unmanned Aircraft Systems Flight Operator (Drones) program is a career studies certificate designed to prepare students for a career as a small unmanned aircraft systems flight operator. Upon successful completion of the coursework, students will demonstrate basic proficiency in the area of sUAS operations, general maintenance and repair, and sUAS collection and processing of aerial images, videos, and geospatial data. Coursework aligns with the aeronautical knowledge required for FAA-approved commercial operations as a Remote Pilot with sUAS rating and prepares students to sit for the FAA Part 107 exam. The Small Unmanned Aircraft Systems Flight Technician (Drones) program is also a career studies certificate designed to prepare students for a career as a small unmanned aircraft systems flight technician. Upon successful completion of the coursework, students will demonstrate advanced proficiency in a variety of sUAS areas. Topics covered include both theory and hands-on experience with mission planning, ground control operations, crew management, emergency procedures, safety, sensor selection, advanced maintenance, drone programming, flight data management, geospatial technology and systems, and manipulation of geospatial data for the purpose of analysis, presentation, and decision-making. Students must complete the sUAS Flight Operator Career Studies Certificate prior to beginning the coursework in this certificate. Coursework will encompass retailing, social and economic justice, marketing, supply chain, regulatory compliance, and more. Master's degree candidates will also complete a capstone project, where they will develop a formal plan for the cannabis business and pitch it directly to industry professionals. According to Leafly, there are now 321,000 full-time American cannabis jobs. With the industry's expansion, it's not surprising many accredited universities are investing time and money into cannabis education. Some universities only offer a few classes while others have full degrees in cannabis. Colleges and universities across the country are stepping up to meet the demand for workers skilled in the cannabis industry, and they're connecting their graduates with potential employers. Marijuana companies, meanwhile, can turn to these institutions to fill their ranks. The cannabis industry is expected to support between 425,000 and 520,000 full-time jobs in the United States this year, according to the MJBiz Factbook. That figure could soar as high as 670,000 by 2025.Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/blunt-business1131/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy
