Tuesday, September 24 marks the second anniversary of post-tropical storm Fiona's landfall on the southwest coast of Newfoundland. The storm caused devastation and heartbreak for residents there. Mark Lomond lost his family's fishing stage, and five houses owned by members of his family were destroyed. Lomond eventually salvaged a keepsake from the storm that will be part of an exhibit in New York on Tuesday. The exhibit is being held to coincide with the United Nations General Assembly and High-Level Week, which brings together world leaders to address global challenges. Bernice spoke with Lomond and with Conor Curtis of the Sierra Club, which put the exhibit together.

Down to Sally's Cove: Newfoundland Stories by Ella Manuel

Ella Manuel returned in the mid-1940s to Newfoundland, a divorced mother of two small boys. Chatting with American sportsman Lee Wulff about the need for fly-fishing camps in north-western Newfoundland, she suddenly decided to start a sports-fishing venture. In Lomond, the once busy logging town in Bonne Bay, she set up a summer-time operation at Killdevil Lodge. Though it did not prosper, Ella gloried in the beauty of her surroundings.

Once again, I'm sharing one of my albums from start to finish. St Andrew's is on November 30th this year. In addition to celebrating the feast of St. Andrew, it is also Scotland's official national holiday. So I'm gonna share my album Scottish Songs of Drinking & Rebellion, from start to finish in this show. This album was released on November 30, 2013, five years ago. It was fully produced, mixed and mastered by me. Nathan Deese is a Celtic musician from North Carolina. He sang background vocals on the album. He also played bass, guitar, mandolin, whistle and flute on "Come Ye By Athrol", Green Grow the Rashes", "Ye Jacobites By Name", and "Flower of Scotland". Daniel I Briggs sang background vocals as well and played bass, guitar, mandolin, octave mandolin and all other songs. Jody Richardson added violin on "Loch Tay Boat Song" Jon Richardson played concertina on "MacPherson's Farewell". Most of the tracks were recorded in January 2011. I took my family on a trip up to middle-of-no-where Kentucky to record, while Gwen and baby Kenzie visited a friend in Lexington. I recorded this album, Don't Go Drinking With Hobbits, and St Patrick's Day all at the same time. However, there were two tracks I re-recorded parts later. One was "Mingulay Boat Song". The other was "Flower of Scotland". And when you listen to those, notice the background vocals because I used the wrong settings on my USB preamp. So they came off more compressed sounding. And I LOVED the sound. They kinda make the songs. I found it humorous that in "Ye Canna Shove Yer Granny" that I repeated a verse accidentally. And I didn't notice it while I was editing. The front Photo on the album was taken by Jan Czenkusch on our Celtic Invasion of Scotland in 2013. She also took the pictures inside the CD. I took the ones on the back. And graphic design was by James McDaniel II. Now most of these songs are traditional except for "Flower of Scotland" which is by Roy Williamson. "Mingulay Boat Song" which is by Sir Hugh S. Roberton. "Mari's Wedding" is by John Roderick Bannerman. And "Skye Boat Song" is by Sir Harold Boulton.' And of course Robert Burns wrote "MacPherson's", "Jacobites", "Scots Wha Hae", "A Man's A Man" and "Green Grow the Rashes". I love this album. These are my absolute favorite Scottish, all except I couldn't get a good recording of "Loch Lomond". And some of these recordings, thanks to Nathan and Daniel, made this a powerhouse album in my opinion. Subscribe at Celtfather.com if you want to find out more about some of the songs in the future. And if you have any questions, email me.

The Toadcast - the weekly podcast from Song, by Toad

Yup, as you know, Song, by Toad Records is five years old so I thought a brief spin through the history of the label would be in order because, well, why the fuck not. There's quite a lot of stuff in the vaults here which has long since vanished into the mists of time, and it's interesting to look back at how we started, in two senses. Firstly, the roster was very obviously unrecognisable, primarily because it didn't really exist yet. We had a couple of pals who were willing to let us try and help promote their self-recorded bits and bobs, and some folk we thought were talented and knew were unsigned, but had no idea what they would make of us suggesting we try putting out their music for them. And secondly, there is the ambition. We started out expecting to do little more than assisting people with a self-release. We assumed we'd be working with scrappy little demos and bits of home-recorded EPs and things like that - just trying to get the bands a little bit of extra publicity which they didn't necessarily have the time to try and achieve for themselves. It think it's safe to say that, looking back five years later, I absolutely never in a million years dreamed we'd end up where we are now. Nor did I have the slightest understanding of how much we'd have to achieve, just to only get this far! But Rome wasn't built in a day, as they say. Apparently it took ages. 01. Video: YouTube - Vimeo Photos: Flickr Audio: zip download (right-click, save as) This is another one of those painfully late Toad Sessions which crashed into the bottleneck created when we recorded five sessions in a very short space space of time at the end of 2011 and then ended up putting most of them on ice when the label took over my life in early spring. Nevertheless, this is a lovely session, and as an acoustic one it is also something of a change of sound from the recent ones. Sam had played one of our gigs the previous night at Henry's Cellar Bar with Withered Hand and Mike MacFarlane, and the next day we recorded a session and promptly buggered off to the pub for a few pints. Thanks are due to Neil from Meursault who recorded this session, to Dylan Matthewsfor the photos, video camera work and excellent leftover turkey sandwiches, and to Ian Greenhill for helping with the filming, as well as for being gracious enough not to make me re-export all the videos after forgetting to add him to the credits because we recorded this damn thing so bloody long ago. As per usual, mp3s of the session tracks can be downloaded below for free, then there is the full interview podcast (tracklisting at the bottom of the page) and then the four individual session track videos, with the main video at the top of the page. This is my annual World of Song, by Toad Records podcast, where I prattle on a bit about the stuff we have coming up in the new year.  I play a couple of things we released towards the tail end of the year, and some stuff by some of the new bands we're going to be working with for the first time in 2011. I also prattle on at immensely tedious length about the ins and outs of running a record label, which may or may not actually interest you at all, but it's there whether you like it or not.  We've got plans for some changes for the new year as well, with a new imprint for the label being launched, and a partnership with the Brothers Grimm for the creation of new lines of merch to go with every release.  It's going to be a bit exhausting, I think, but immense fun nevertheless. 01.
