An estimated 6,500 people could be affected by Biden's recent pardon for federal convictions of cannabis possession. Since most possession charges occur at the state level, Biden encouraged governors to take similar pardoning actions. Some in the cannabis industry were skeptical of the recent announcement, but do believe it is a first step toward legalization. Jesce Horton is the co-founder and CEO of Portland-based cannabis production company LOWD. He joins us to share his thoughts on this recent announcement and his hopes for the future.
The Green Repeal - A Guide to Cannabis Marketing & Advertising
The War on Drugs in America disproportionately affected people of color. So many potential entrepreneurs and their families have had their lives ruined by drug laws and racial profiling. Meanwhile, white male entrepreneurs have had no trouble reaping massive profits from the legal cannabis industry. Today's guest, Jesce Horton, knows this well. He left the world of industrial engineering to join the cannabis industry and co-founded LOWD in 2019. He works to produce some of Oregon's most sought-after craft flower and reclaim economic opportunities for communities devastated by the War on Drugs. He's an active leader in the cannabis industry and serves as part of the Minority Cannabis Business Association and Nu Project, which have given $1 million in grants and 0% interest loans to minority cannabis entrepreneurs. In this episode, you'll learn how Jesce used his skills as an industrial engineer to pivot into cannabis, how he's helping to create opportunities for people like himself, and the unique challenges that Black entrepreneurs face as they break into the world of legal cannabis. KEY TAKEAWAYS How Jesce started growing cannabis after he moved to Portland–and how this eventually led him into the industry. What happened when Jesce was arrested for possession of a single seed. Why so many of the best growers, and especially growers of color, struggle to find success in the legal market. How LOWD develops strains to meet their consumers' specific needs. Why Jesce thinks we could see full federal legalization 3-5 years from now. An eviction notice on 4/20. That's how Jesce Horton's first foray into state-licensed cannabis cultivation ended in 2017. Part of it had to do with a one-in-a-million regulatory quirk that forced him to shut down a successful grow, and part of it was not being “passionate” about a not-so-successful retail arm. But Jesce remained confident in his process and product while never losing his love for the craft, so he tried again. The result is Lowd, Horton's “dream company” that “embodies the art of urban craft cultivation.” In this episode of Seed to CEO, Jesce shares: How his education and experience in industrial engineering helped elevate his operations. The importance of authenticity in creating loyalty and differentiating your brand in saturated markets. Lessons he learned from his first foray into the regulated cannabis market. How to raise capital for a second company after your first one fails. Who is Jesce Horton? Jesce Horton, CEO at Portland, Oregon-based Lowd, is a professional engineer specializing in automation and energy management. He started his cannabis cultivation journey growing medical marijuana in his basement for two elderly cancer patients. Jesce is the co-founder of the Minority Cannabis Business Association and a former chair and current member of the board of directors at the Resource Innovation Institute. He also sits on the Oregon Cannabis Association's board and is an advisory board member for MJBizDaily. Jesce and his wife, Jeannette Ward Horton, founded the nonprofit organization Nu Project, which supports Black and brown cannabis entrepreneurs.

I'd like to take a moment to reflect on this last year we've shared. One year ago the first story aired on The Voice of Dog. The reality of the pandemic had arrived in my country, and all over the world people were feeling isolated and uncertain and powerless. I started this podcast because I wanted to do something about it —anything, just to make something, anything, better for someone. Anyone. I decided I wanted to tell people stories. Stories that would give them courage, or hope, and if nothing else, something to look forward to. Even if they didn't listen to the stories, I still wanted people to know that someone cared enough about them to have a new story for them to enjoy, every time they came back. The first was, appropriately, “Bad Dog!” by my friend Rob Baird. A story of unfairness, and powerlessness in the face of power — but also a story of defiance and of hope. Many other writers have contributed stories since then. There's a name for writers who've had stories on this podcast, you know. They're “Friends of the Fireplace” — in early stories I sometimes mentioned that, though I realized I never explained why, and fell out of the habit. 163 stories have appeared on The Voice Of Dog in the last year. 163, by 82 writers — well, 83 now, including me. Today's story is “Where Stories Are Told”, a riff on the traditional Irish masterpiece “The Humours of Whiskey”, by Khaki, your faithful fireside companion, and friends — and I'd like to take a moment to thank them: Rob Baird, for Games at Götterdämmerung, Bad Dog! This week I'm happy to be speaking with Tracey Owens Lowd. Tracey combines the skills of life coach, spiritual counselor, and energy healer. She leads retreats and works with individuals at her office in Atlanta or anywhere in the world through online sessions. In this interview, Tracey talks about growing up as a highly intuitive, spiritually-aware child, and the challenges she had to overcome in order to put her gifts to use as a healer. I ask her about the different modalities she uses to work with mind, body, spirit, and emotions. Questions include: What are “limiting beliefs” and how can we unlearn them? How can we change negative thought patterns? What is energy healing? How can we find our purpose in life? We also discuss manifestation—getting clear on what you want, and bringing more of it into your life. And the vital role of struggle—not always getting what you want—in sparking growth. Grizzelka's Bridegroom by Mary E. Lowd. Narrated by J.S. Arquin. Featuring an afterword recorded by Mary E. Lowd. On the dais at the front of the great hall, Rhun's bride stood, resplendent in lace, pearls, ruffles, and diamonds -- all of the sugary sweetness of silk and satin that her attendant minions had been able to gather, all of it draped over her bulging tentacles. She looked like an octopus who had choked to death on a rack of wedding dresses. She had never looked more lovely. Mary E. Lowd is a prolific science-fiction and furry writer in Oregon. Her fiction tends to feature spaceships and talking animals. She's won an Ursa Major Award, two Cóyotl Awards, and two Leo Literary Awards. Welcome everybody to another episode of Riot Radio. Let's face it mainstream radio continues to spin the same 15 - 20 songs over and over and over again. There is a choice! The Canadian Geeks are here to shake things up. No rules, just program directors dictating the music. Unlike our normal episodes, Riot Radio is more rock, less talk. Some of our listeners prefer this format. This could be construed as insulting but we kind of like it too! Wallygator jumps into the DJ booth to spin a dozen tracks guaranteed to to ROCK! What's in store? You get some Metallica, a double shot from Jim Breuer and the Lowd and Rowdies! Some Canadian rock from the Trews, a double shot from Mr. Ron Keel... A killer track from a brand new band called Storm Force, which Wallygator makes a bold prediction. Throw in some Volbeat, Queen, Heaven and Hell and the much maligned Nickelback and you get a pretty great hour of rock n roll! Oh and Wallygator shares with you his brand new favourite song from Massive Wagons...
In this episode, we enter the final months of Germanium and Spring. Our players finish many quests, mention many more innuendoes, and we enter into a dance-off with some danger, and a very horrific situation. Also, we have a Patreon at: https://www.patreon.com/eslrpg
In this episode, we enter the months of Quadranary and Hogust. Our dudes act like righteous dudes, and some uncool dudes. And the unlikeliest of people save the day. Also, more dirty jokes and innuendos! Sorry about the length on this episode. Also, we have a Patreon at: https://www.patreon.com/eslrpg
In this episode, Stick learns why Cal-Cass and Piergeron like clerics so much. Yes, that seriously happens, and yes, the months so far really are Unnamed, Binary, Tertiary, and June. To be fair, it makes just as much sense with normal English months. Also, while this episode is completely safe for work, it does include a lot of innuendo. On this episode, our players start the game and quickly learn the rules. Also, some rules get troubleshooting. Also, we have a Patreon at: https://www.patreon.com/eslrpg
Jamaal returns to the mic to catch us up on all he has been doing. Jamaal has recently secured 2 paid mural commissions in the city of Dayton. On top of that, Jamaal discusses how we went from making $4,000 off of his art, to $20,000, and hoping for $100,000 in 2020 to continue his #benchmark of growing his income 5 times the previous amount annually. Jamaal recently dropped his mercy line #LOWD which stands for "Living Our Wildest Dreams", definitely a brand to watch. Listen to this episode and follow Jamaal on all social platforms.
