Today's episode is coming to you a little different but for great reasons. We have upped our podcasting game big time with some more visual elements (check out our YouTube) and an amazing technician working behind the scenes, Danna O'Connor of Post Saga. To kick it off in this new realm, we were joined in the LG Studios by Marcus Smith and The Rapscallions and we also spill our drinks twice (and a third time before we even started recording).Marcus Smith aka The Sandwich King of Cleveland has been involved in the local music scene for quite some time, and is adored by many people in the city. We show a lot of love to some mutual friends between us and discuss the success of his most recent full length album, Unique Mélange (one song from which has an amazing story involving blowing Ben Folds's mind). We also may have just saved Rock N Roll?? Of course, it's not a true Marcus Smith episode if we don't get into a discussion about sandwiches (Urban Twine - if you're listening, please bring back the Marcus Smith). This episode is completely out of control from start to finish and we hope you enjoy it as much as we did. Thanks, again, Marcus and The rapSCALLIONS!SONGS PERFORMED:Storm2007Blue SkiesCosmic DwellerWho Are You? In this episode of the "Rogues, Rascals and Rapscallions" series, Rabbi Dunner charts the extraordinary life story of the only rabbi who wrote a letter to defend the convicted felon Zeide Meir Schmellner, after his arrest in the late 1930s. Who was Rabbi Yisroel Twersky, the celebrated Kozhnitz-Chernobyl Rebbe of New York? Where was he from? How did he end up in New York? What compelled him to defend Schmellner? And why did he fade into complete obscurity long before he died? Once again, Rabbi Dunner presents a stunning story from the margins of Jewish history.
In this sermon, Pastor Phil emphasized God's great ability the write comeback stories! When it comes to sin, we tend to fall into self-pity, thinking we are too far gone for God to use us. BUT! He is the greatest comeback story author to ever exist. Self-pity is really just us thinking that our sin is greater than the grace of God. Let's give God the credit He deserves.

Zeide Meir Schmellner was the scion of a distinguished Hasidic dynasty, and married into a similarly elevated family. Although he was a brilliant rabbinic scholar and a charismatic speaker, his explosion into the field of international peace in 1925 took everyone by surprise. Rabbi Dunner delves into the story of this unusual Romanian rabbi, charting a career that took him from Bukovina, to Paris, to New York, and eventually a brush with the law that landed him in Sing Sing. One of the most shocking stories of any rabbi in modern history.
Rabbi Pini Dunner once again travels down the side roads and into cul-de-sacs of the Jewish yesteryear with the help of exhaustive research – sharing countless anecdotes and previously unrevealed details. In Part 2 of “Rogues, Rascals, and Rapscallions”, Rabbi Dunner explores the rollercoaster life of a scion of the Nadvorna Hasidic dynasty, Rabbi Yitzchak Leifer, whose brush with the law in 1938 made international headlines. Who was Rabbi Yitzchak Leifer, and how did he end up as the center of attention for multiple law enforcement agencies? The answers to these questions, and the details of his life and the life of his family, will astound you.
Rabbi Pini Dunner travels down the side roads and into cul-de-sacs of the Jewish yesteryear with the help of exhaustive research – sharing countless anecdotes and previously unrevealed details. This first episode of "Exploring Jewish History" is titled “Rogues, Rascals, and Rapscallions”, and looks at characters from traditional Jewish society whose personal lives did not quite match up to the norms of the world they were a part of. In Part 1 Rabbi Dunner offers a revealing glimpse into the life of the early twentieth-century Orthodox rabbi of Zanesville OH, and the sad secret that he took with him to his grave.

I'd like to take a moment to reflect on this last year we've shared. One year ago the first story aired on The Voice of Dog. The reality of the pandemic had arrived in my country, and all over the world people were feeling isolated and uncertain and powerless. I started this podcast because I wanted to do something about it —anything, just to make something, anything, better for someone. Anyone. I decided I wanted to tell people stories. Stories that would give them courage, or hope, and if nothing else, something to look forward to. Even if they didn't listen to the stories, I still wanted people to know that someone cared enough about them to have a new story for them to enjoy, every time they came back. The first was, appropriately, “Bad Dog!” by my friend Rob Baird. A story of unfairness, and powerlessness in the face of power — but also a story of defiance and of hope. Many other writers have contributed stories since then. There's a name for writers who've had stories on this podcast, you know. They're “Friends of the Fireplace” — in early stories I sometimes mentioned that, though I realized I never explained why, and fell out of the habit. 163 stories have appeared on The Voice Of Dog in the last year. 163, by 82 writers — well, 83 now, including me. Today's story is “Where Stories Are Told”, a riff on the traditional Irish masterpiece “The Humours of Whiskey”, by Khaki, your faithful fireside companion, and friends — and I'd like to take a moment to thank them: Rob Baird, for Games at Götterdämmerung, Bad Dog! How did she handle such difficulty in the midst of heartbreak? With great grace and trust in the Lord. Hannah demonstrates to us how to live our lives when we are full of despair and anxiety AND are suffering from the barbs and insults of others. She also shows us the joy of full surrender to the plans and hand of God.

Our fiends spring their trap and resolve Thrasher's rat problem for the good of all involved. Well, almost all involved. There're a few complications. You'll see. A point of note: We had a recording error during the Narri & Arabet scene, and had to re-play it for contenuity. During the original play of this scene, Narri rolled a Natural 1, and his player insisted on keeping those consequences for the re-play. This is the "last time we played this scene" reference in the first scene of this episode. They're creepy, kooky, flamboyant and spooky. I don't think 'ooky' is an actual word, but they're the Hullu family. We explore Bailymena first through the lens of Narri & Zivah's origins in the seedier quarters of the city, then return to the present as the Rapscallions go rat-catching and discover the depth of Bailymena's wererat infestation.Runelanders was created, written, directed, edited and engineered by 'Mad' Adam Tambeau, with gracious help from his incredible friends. Along the slopes and shores of its eponymous firth, ancient Bailymena rises. A majestic city of towers and waterfalls, it is the Capital of the Isle of Skōdia, the southernmost holding of the Holy Cathrican Empire. Confined as it is by geography, the city has built upward as it has grown; this tradition of building the new atop the old has given Bailymena a skyline which bristles with towering high-rise architecture, and an impressive depth of civic infrastructure which continues far beneath its byzantine warren of cobblestone streets. It's here that we meet the hooligan heroes of our first storyline. It's a crime caper that follows the first fumbling forays of a freshly-formed fellowship of felons in a fractured fairytale I like to call Rapscallions. You may have heard this story before, but I guarantee you've never heard it like this! This is the 2020 Director's Cut, restored and re-mastered from re-discovered original footage with tighter story editing and a lush soundtrack that enhances the main tale while telling another all its own. This is the introduction to Bailymena you deserve! Hear it again, for the first time! All music in this episode is used under license from SOCAN, under Creative Commons, or in the public domain.
