For the series finale, we go back to the Fort. Join us as we bring you the sights and sounds we experienced at Fort Adams as Newport Folk returned after a necessary break in 2020, and presented their six-day, half capacity 2021 festival, Folk On. We'll take you from the meaningful first notes sung by the first performers to grace the stage, Resistance Revival Chorus, to one of the last - Lake Street Dive, and their tribute to beloved member of the folk family and former WFUV Program Director, the late Rita Houston. We also hear from Andrew Bird and Hiss Golden Messenger's MC Taylor about their return to performing and paying homage to John Prine, from mandolin virtuoso Chris Thile about the magic of Newport and why it continues to gives him hope, and the kismet journey of Allison Russell organizing and performing during the most talked about set at Folk On, Sunday night's 'Once and Future Sounds', curated by, and featuring women of color, with a very very special guest. We also check in with Margo Price and Jeremy Ivey, Katie Crutchfield (Waxahatchee), Yola, Newport Executive Director Jay Sweet, and many other artists, fans and members of the Folk family about their experiences at Folk On, their reflections of the past 18 months, and where we are headed. Through it all, the feeling of family and community is ever present, giving us the courage to take tentative steps forward, leaning into the truth and power of music, and the magic that happens when we dream together. Festival Circuit: Newport Folk is presented by Osiris Media, and hosted by Carmel Holt. It is co-written, co-produced and edited by Carmel and Julian Booker, who is also the series' audio engineer. Production assistance from Zach Brogan. Executive producers are RJ Bee and Christina Collins. Show Logo and art by Mark Dowd.  The series theme music is "Ruminations Pt. 3 (Afternoon Haze)" by Steven Warwick. On this special episode, Trevor sits down with his lifelong childhood friend Caleb to discuss his pick of the band Needtobreathe's 2021 album, “Into the Mystery.” This is an album that speaks deeply to Caleb in its lyrics and music that touch on themes of love, coming of age, and spirituality. This was Trevor's introduction to the band and an opportunity to connect even deeper to a meaningful friendship with Caleb. The word “honesty” kept coming up in their discussion as these songs are uplifting and hopeful, but they don't shy away from the struggles that might precede these feelings. We have a special episode this week - we are sharing Sarah Jarosz's conversation on Basic Folk podcast! Sarah is a multi-Grammy winning mandolin player and songwriter who has collaborated with the likes of Chris Thile, the Live From Here house band, Bela Fleck, Daniel Tashian, Ruston Kelly, and Natalie Hemby. In this conversation, Sarah and hosts Cindy Howes and Lizzie No talk about her experience with confidence using the Dunning–Kruger effect, in which people with limited competence in a particular domain overestimate their abilities. AKA Fake it till you make, AKA Leap and the net will appear. She also talks about her parents' influence on her early musicality and how her mom is doing with her cancer remission. An overall theme of this conversation is that Sarah never lost sight of her goal: keeping it all about the music and don't let noise get in the way of your important work.More on Basic Folk:Basic Folk, honest conversations with folk musicians, features hosts Cindy Howes and the musician/known communist Lizzie No. The podcast approaches interviews with warmth, humor and insightful questions. I speak with hit songwriter and producer Barry Dean, who, with four #1 hits, many singles, and countless cuts, somehow manages to act like an earnest kid grateful for the chance to take his shot. His songs have been recorded by Reba McEntire, Tim McGraw, Maren Morris, Alison Krauss, Jon Pardi, Ingrid Michaelson, Brothers Osbourne, and many, many others. In one of the podcast's most illuminating guests to date, Barry discusses his unusual path to success — he didn't move to Nashville until he was 38 — and how his approach to collaboration has evolved through the years. He also digs into a couple of the details for some of his best known co-writes, like “Daydrinking” (Little Big Town) and “God and Country Music” (George Straight), and is quick to sing the praises of his frequent collaborators — Lori McKenna, Luke Laird, and Natalie Hemby, among others. This intro doesn't do justice to the caliber of the conversation we had. Barry is full of insight, wisdom and humility. You just gotta listen.

Sarah Jarosz is what happens when young women are taken seriously. A huge part of the mandolinist's story is that she had supportive male mentors and that has added to her confidence. We all know the age old story of “Young woman shows promise, gets exploited by the patriarchy and it affects her work.” We need to hear stories like this. Starting in her hometown of Wimberley, Texas, just 45 minutes outside of Austin - the live music capital of the world, Sarah found the mandolin at ten years old. Labeled a prodigy and thanks to the encouraging spirit of folk music, she found music mentorship with seasoned professionals like David Grisman, Ricky Scaggs, Tim O'Brien and Bela Fleck. After her time at The New England Conservatory of Music, she moved to New York and would go on to collaborate with people like Chris Thile in the Live From Here House Band and her trio I'm With Her, featuring Aoife O'Donovan and Sara Watkins and won four Grammys. After making the move to Nashville, on her latest album, the very impressive and sonically expansive Polaroid Lovers, Jarosz collaborated with producer Daniel Tashian, which originally was just a low-stakes co-writing project. The success of her first co-writing experience with Daniel led her to pursue other songwriting sessions with Ruston Kelly and Natalie Hemby. The collaboration found on the record has opened Sarah up to new sounds and new experiences. In our conversation, we talk about Sarah stepping into her own voice with confidence on this record and knowing her musical self enough at this point in her life. She describes her experience with confidence using the Dunning–Kruger effect, in which people with limited competence in a particular domain overestimate their abilities. AKA Fake it till you make, AKA Leap and the net will appear. She also talks about her parents' influence on her early musicality and how her mom is doing with her cancer remission. Amanda Shires is a Texas-born singer/songwriter who got her start at 15 when she joined Bob Wills & His Texas Playboys on fiddle. After starting her solo career in 2005, Shires continued to play with a number of other bands including her husband Jason Isbell's band, the 400 Unit. In 2019, she started the all-female country supergroup The Highwomen, which includes Brandi Carlile, Natalie Hemby and Maren Morris. After the 2022 release of Amanda Shires' seventh solo album, Take It Like A Man, she released an album of covers with the late Bobbie Nelson—who's primarily known for playing piano in her younger brother Willie Nelson's band. Amanda initially enlisted Bobbie to play on her version of Willie's classic, “You Were Always On My Mind,” but they continued to record together. The resulting collection of songs became the album Loving You, which was released this past June, nearly a year after Bobbie's death. On today's episode Justin Richmond talks to Amanda Shires about Bobbie Nelson's unfortunate start in the music business. Amanda also talks about why she feels more comfortable singing about society's big issues alongside The Highwomen. And she remembers the time she went to Vegas and gambled away all her band's tour money—only to win it all back after playing craps through the night. We had the pleasure of interviewing Lissie over Zoom video.Midwestern artist Lissie is a multi-talented tour de force who appeared in TV shows Twin Peaks and Loudermilk as well as co-owning the music genre themed popcorn company Otts Pops Indie Pop and being involved with land conservation and running her own farm. Her new country-tinged indie folk album Carving Canyons is due out September 16 on Lionboy Records. The sun soaked twelve song collection is a sonic comfort as it simultaneously charts the ripples caused by heartbreak and loneliness as well as what happens when the soul perseveres amidst pain. As the COVID-19 pandemic spread across the world, Lissie was also dealing with an impactful breakup on her Iowa farm. A breakup song at its core, lead single “Flowers” explores the cycles of grief and the parallels Lissie saw in nature while gardening on her farm as she processed that grief. Co-written with Henry Brill and Bre Kennedy who also contributes vocals, you can just about feel the sunny breeze roll in as she builds power from pain with the expansive track. Produced by Curt Schneider (Patty Smyth, Lucero), Carving Canyons is about looking within while dealing with the uncertainty of the future—finding hope in personal and worldly adversity, no matter what the forecast might say. Inspired by her incredible intergenerational female friend group and the nature that surrounded her, Lissie traveled to Nashville and co-wrote much of the album with a majority of female-identifying songwriters—including Bre Kennedy, Madi Diaz, Morgan Nagler, Natalie Hemby, Kate York, and Sarah Buxton—who also contribute additional vocals throughout the album. The reimagined recording of his critically acclaimed studio album Maybe We Never Die is available to stream and download beginning today HERE via Elektra/Low Country Sound. Last year, East reimagined, recut, and re-recorded his fifth full-length offering, Maybe We Never Die, live in one day at the legendary FAME Studios in Muscle Shoals, AL as M.W.N.D. / F.A.M.E. He was accompanied by his bandmates, GRAMMY® Award-winning producer Dave Cobb, and a handful of close friends including Natalie Hemby, Taylor Goldsmith of Dawes, and Foy Vance. Regarding M.W.N.D. / F.A.M.E., East shared, “It's amazing how easy it is to make a record after you've already made it once. This was fun, and it's a scrapbook of a moment. We're used to making records with everyone in the same room. It was nice to revert back to that. I just wanted to be around people and go play something. We decided to go to FAME for a day, because it's one of our favorite rooms and the people are incredible. It felt very natural to fully simplify Maybe We Never Die at a place we enjoy.”Maybe We Never Die initially captivated fans and critics last year. The album arrived to widespread acclaim from Forbes, NPR Music, Rolling Stone, Southern Living, American Songwriter, and more. East delivered unforgettable performances of the album's lead single “Madelyn” on Late Night with Seth Meyers, CBS Saturday Morning, and The Ellen DeGeneres Show, and celebrated the album's release with his 49-city Maybe We Never Die Tour of North America, which wrapped earlier this month. Her songs have been recorded by Kacey Musgraves, Alicia Keys, Lady Gaga, Maren Morris, Ed Sheeran, Sheryl Crow, Dierks Bentley, Eli Young Band, Kelly Clarkson, Chris Isaak, Blake Shelton, Lee Ann Womack, and many others. We last spoke with Natalie in 2017, but we catch up with her today to find out more about her life as a behind the scenes songwriter, her work with supergroup The Highwomen, and her critically-acclaimed solo album Pins and Needles. PART ONE - 2:49Scott and Paul chat about Pearl Snap Studios and set the stage for this very special "old friends" episode.PART TWO - 6:02They guys welcome longtime friend and fellow music geek David Manning to argue about beloved songs that they actually hate. PART THREE - 39:20Our in-depth conversation with Natalie HembyABOUT NATALIE HEMBY:When we first spoke with Natalie Hemby in 2017 she'd already racked up three CMA Song of the Year nominations and written a half dozen #1 singles, including “Pontoon” and “Tornado” by Little Big Town, “Downtown” by Lady A, “You Look Like I Need a Drink” by Justin Moore, and Miranda Lambert's “White Liar” and “Automatic,” the latter of which was named ACM Song of the Year and snagged Natalie her first Grammy nomination for Best Country Song. In the five years since then, her songwriting star has continued to rise. She co-wrote three songs on Kacey Musgraves' Golden Hour, which won the Grammy for Album of the Year—across all categories—and earned Natalie a CMA Song of the Year nomination for “Rainbow.” Natalie co-wrote two songs with Lady Gaga for the soundtrack to A Star is Born, including Song of the Year Grammy nominee “Always Remember Us This Way” and the Grammy winner for Best Song Written for Visual Media, “I'll Never Love Again.” She has scored additional #1 hits with Jon Pardi's “Heartache Medication,” as well as Miranda Lambert's “Bluebird,” which was nominated for both CMA and ACM Song of the Year, and the Best Country Song Grammy. Natalie beat herself in that Grammy category when she won the Best Country Song honors for “Crowded Table,” which she wrote with Lori McKenna and Brandi Carlile. The song was recorded by the supergroup The Highwomen, of which Natalie is a member alongside Carlile, Marren Morris, and Amanda Shires. “Crowded Table” was also named Song of the Year by the Americana Music Association, while The Highwomen won Americana Album of the Year and Duo or Group of the Year. Recent pop cuts, including Kelly Clarkson's “I Dare You” and Ed Sheeran's “Love in Slow Motion,” illustrate Natalie's versatility and underscore why she was named Music Row magazine's 2021 Female Songwriter of the Year. In addition to her work with The Highwomen, Natalie's been flexing her considerable artist muscles recently with the release of her album Pins and Needles, which PopMatters calls “a phenomenal album from an artist coming into full possession of her gifts.”

The acclaimed British singer and songwriter has released two albums on Dan Auerbach's Easy Eye Sound label, both of which were produced by the Black Keys' frontman. She was nominated for four Grammy awards for 2019, including Best New Artist, and is a sometime collaborator with the supergroup The Highwomen alongside Brandi Carlile, Natalie Hemby, Marren Morris, and Amanda Shires. Yola joins us to chat about her life as a songwriter and artist. PART ONEPaul and Scott discuss the history of the Best New Artist Grammy category, including a few surprising tidbits of trivia.PART TWO Our in-depth interview with YolaABOUT YOLASinger-songwriter Yola made a major splash at the 2020 Grammy ceremony with four nominations: Best Americana Album, Best American Roots Performance and Best American Roots Song for her composition “Faraway Look,” and Best New Artist in the general category alongside Lizzo, Lil Nas X, and Billie Eilish. Dubbed by many as a "country soul singer," the British artist's breakthrough came when she teamed up with Black Keys frontman Dan Auerbach in Nashville to write and record her debut solo album, Walk Through Fire, on which she and Auerbach collaborated with a roster of Southern soul songwriters including Dan Penn and Memphis studio legend Bobby Wood. She was subsequently nominated for Emerging Artist of the Year and Album of the Year at the 2019 Americana Music Honors & Awards. Though Yola's emergence might have seemed like an overnight success to some, she'd been working in music in the UK as a vocalist and collaborator with DJs and producers, including Massive Attack. In 2009 she was a writer on “Hopes and Fears,” a single by UK singer Will Young, and in 2013 she co-wrote the Top 10 UK hit “Turn Back Time” by Sub Focus, on which she also sang an uncredited vocal. Additionally, Yola sang lead on the Top 5 UK pop hit “Won't Look Back” by Duke Dumont. In the wake of her success with the Walk Through Fire album, Yola reteamed with Auerbach for her most recent release, Stand For Myself, featuring highlights such as “Diamond Studded Shoes” and “Dancing Away in Tears.” Her accolades continue, having won Artist of the Year honors at the 2020 UK Americana Awards and earning a 2021 nomination from the CMA for the International Achievement Award. Earlier this month she played a sold out show with Chris Stapleton at Madison Square Garden.

Natalie Hemby has earned the type of career most Nashville artists dream of, without necessarily being a household name. She signed her first publishing deal before the age of 21, and has co-written hits for superstars like Kacey Musgraves, Carrie Underwood, Miranda Lambert, Sheryl Crow and Lady Gaga, the latter of which nabbed Natalie her first Grammy. Natalie's friendships with fellow singer/songwriters Brandi Carlile, Maren Morris and Amanda Shires led to the formation of The Highwomen, and their hit debut record, in 2019. Despite the pandemic not allowing them to tour in 2020, the supergroup has spawned legions of fans and another Grammy for Natalie's co-write on the heartwarming single “Crowded Table.” Today, Natalie talks about an early Prince obsession, a recent collaboration with Alicia Keys, the traits one needs to be a great co-writing partner, and The Highwomen's influence on a fierce, flourishing generation of new songwriters. ¡Feliz Navidad! All Our Favorite People

Hit songwriter/artist Luke Dick is one of the creative people in Nashville that keeps music interesting for us. His left-of-center perspective shows up in hits he’s co-written for Eric Church (“Kill a Word”), Dierks Bentley (“Burning Man”), Kacey Musgraves ("Velvet Elvis") and he just received his first Grammy Nomination for Country Song of the Year for co-writing “Bluebird” with Miranda Lambert and Natalie Hemby. For what is surely his most personal project to date, Luke enlisted Dierks, Miranda, Patrick Carney of The Black Keys, The Highwomen’s Natalie Hemby and Jackson Dean to help him create the album Music from the Documentary Red Dog. On both the album and in the film, Red Dog, Luke and his mom, Kim, tell the story of the people at Oklahoma City’s Red Dog Saloon, the topless bar where Kim worked as a dancer when Luke was a kid. In this conversation, Luke tells us what inspired him to create the Red Dog documentary and album, how he found his people in Nashville’s music community, and how he keeps challenging himself to grow creatively.

Esta vez se trataba de Southern Soul From Memphis To Muscle Shoals And More, con una selección de 10 versiones e canciones de rhythm and blues y una de cierre que suponía recordar su álbum Car Wheels on a Gravel Road gracias a “Still I Long for Your Kiss”. Escuchar audio

“Bring My Flowers Now” Tanya Tucker. Compuesta por Brandi Carlile, Phil Hanseroth, Tim Hanseroth y Tanya Tucker. “Crowded Table” The Highwomen. Compuesta por Brandi Carlile, Natalie Hemby y Lori McKenna. “My Love Will Not Change” Aubrie Sellers featuring Steve Earle. Compuesta por Billy Burnette y Shawn Camp. “Stay High” Brittany Howard. Compuesta por Brittany Howard. “Thoughts and Prayers” Drive-By Truckers. The Dirt And The Stars. That’s How Rumors Get Started. Jay Sweet, now the executive producer, was mostly responsible for the festival's revival, booking unexpected bands and reinvigorating the spirit of the annual gathering. It's long been a place where musicians would collaborate and make music often steeped in social justice. On this Newport Folk Festival preview edition of All Songs Considered we'll look specifically at the newer faces at this year's festival, including lesser-known artists Yola Carter, Illiterate Light, Courtney Marie Andrews and the debut performance of a new, influential band of well-known women known as The Highwomen. That collaboration includes Brandi Carlile, Amanda Shires, Maren Morris, and Natalie Hemby.

The two wrote, produced, and released her first EP, Volume One, in 2013. Shortly after, Layne moved from her hometown of Denver, NC, to Nashville, TN, to further her artist career. Then working at Hooters to going to school in a conservative school for music, Kassi wins her showcase to eventually become the artist we know today. Breaking down the hits, talking about home, and holding hands on the struggle bus with Natalie Hemby and Hailey Whitters. Both songwriters, but one is a member of the Highway Women and the other is living in a 10 year town with The Dream.   Behind a great song is a songwriter with crazy abilities to be able to pen those songs. Most of these tracks you've heard might have been penned by Natalie Hemby. Songs and projects include Kacey Musgraves' Golden Hour, Miranda Lambert's "White Liar", "Automatic", "Highway Vagabond", Little Big Town's "Pontoon" and "Tornado", Republican Hair's "Fuck A Bomb", songs for the motion picture A Star Is Born, and way more than what can fit here. Always being connected to the industry doesn't give you a free pass. We go through Natalie's personal, family history and connections that even though it sounds like you get a pass. Natalie has proven time and time again that she is a staple in the songwriter community. We talk about trying to do the artist thing, quitting music, and coming back strong. We break down some of her biggest hits including "Rainbow" and "Always Remember Us This Way". Then her unique, supernatural ability to write songs like the way she does is discussed. Natalie also shares some news about a new album in the works after her critically acclaimed, Puxico. To keep up with Natalie and to follow updates about the Highway Women supergroup, give her a follow @wruckestrike on Instagram and Natalie Hemby on Facebook.    Hailey Whitters is 12 years in, in a 10 year town. I felt connected with Hailey, not just as a fellow musician but someone who is on her journey of figuring things out too. Her latest project, not yet released, The Dream is an introspective look into the cycles of life. Not just an artist, as a songwriter Hailey penned Little Big Town's "Happy People", and continues to show up every day in the songwriting room. We talk about her latest releases "10 Year Town" and "The Days" and looking for validation in life beyond a like and when to start trusting yourself. Life's journey and challenges continually change for Hailey, as it does for everyone, but for the conversation, we take a look at past songs and look at the growth up to the present. Puxico is the name of a one-stoplight town in southeastern Missouri where Natalie Hemby spent summers and weekends all through the years she grew up in Nashville, TN. And starting about a decade ago, she launched a project to document the town and her grandfather George. As it came together gradually, so did an album's worth of songs inspired by the place and its people. There are nine tracks that allude to moments, people and values reflected in her favorite small town. At the heart of the film is Homecoming, the annual town festival famous for its square dances, funnel cakes and goat burgers.

Additionally, she co-wrote Little Big Town’s chart topping singles “Pontoon” and “Tornado,” the #1 hits “Downtown” by Lady Antebellum and “You Look Like I Need a Drink” by Justin Moore, Toby Keith’s Top 20 “Drinks After Work,” and “Don’t Rush,” which was a hit for Kelly Clarkson and Vince Gill. Additionally, she scored a Top 10 UK pop hit with “Jealous,” a song co-written with - and recorded by - the English producer, performer, and multi-instrumentalist known as Labrinth. Others who’ve dipped into the Natalie Hemby songbook include Lee Ann Womack, Carrie Underwood, Kellie Pickler, Blake Shelton, Jerrod Niemann and Lee Brice. In addition to writing a half dozen #1 hits, Hemby co-produced a documentary about her grandfather’s hometown called Puxico, which was the inspiration for the eponymous album that’s been heralded by The New York Times, NPR, and Rolling Stone as an early favorite of 2017.

After ten singles and three albums, Miranda Lambert hit the top of the charts for the first time with ‘White Liar.’  BMI held a party in honor of Miranda and BMI songwriter Natalie Hemby.  Now this isn’t your typical industry number one party.  Guests were encouraged to dress in black or white 40’s style for this late-night celebration. Miranda just kicked off her first headlining tour ‘Roadside Bars and Pink Guitars,’ which will include stops with the Lilith Fair and even Bonnaroo in June.
