Shelby Lynne is celebrating the 25th anniversary of her landmark classic album I Am Shelby Lynne, which won her a Grammy award for Best New Artist. We recently sat down with Shelby to discuss the evolution of her songwriting, from her early days in Nashville to her recent genre-defying "comeback" album Consequences of the Crown. PART ONEScott and Paul talk about their favorite single lyrical lines, lyrics that bug them from songs they otherwise like, and quibble over one of Kris Kristofferson's best-known lines. Plus, they call on listeners to submit their own choices for discussion on an upcoming episode. PART TWOOur in-depth interview with Shelby LynneABOUT SHELBY LYNNEShelby Lynne won the Grammy award for Best New Artist in the wake of her genre-bending and critically-acclaimed 1999 album, I Am Shelby Lynne. But it was actually her sixth studio album on an artistic path that took time to unfold. Lynne and her sister, fellow artist Allison Moorer, grew up surrounded by country music. As detailed in Moorer's gripping memoir, Blood, they were also surrounded by violence and trauma. Both found escape through music, with Lynne signing her first recording contract at the age of 19. Initially working with legendary producer Billy Sherrill, best known for his albums with Tammy Wynette and George Jones, Shelby released a series of albums from Nashville in the late ‘80s through the mid-‘90s. She won the Academy of Country Music's Top New Female Vocalist Award in 1991, and was nominated for the ACM's Top Vocal Duo of the Year honor with Faith Hill in 1996. Without any major hit singles, however, Shelby eventually took a break from recording. After moving to Palm Springs, California, and partnering with producer Bill Botrell in 1998, she changed direction and found new footing as an uncategorizable artist committed to artistic integrity. The result, I Am Shelby Lynne, has recently been re-released in a 25th Anniversary edition. Follow-up albums Love, Shelby, Identity Crisis, Suit Yourself, and the Dusty Springfield tribute Just a Little Lovin' were well-received precursors to Lynne launching her own record label. Her subsequent albums Tears, Lies and Alibis, Merry Christmas, Revelation Road, and I Can't Imagine all reached the Top 10 on Billboard's Americana/Folk chart, as did her 2017 collaborative album with sister Allison Moorer. Shelby has recently returned to Nashville and has collaborated with Ashley Monroe, Little Big Town's Karen Fairchild, and others to create her seventeenth album, an unflinchingly honest exploration of heartbreak, called Consequences of the Crown.

In this episode, Laura and Tracy sit down with songwriter, producer and publisher Luke Laird. Luke talks the magic of writers' rounds, being reluctant to ask for help, letting go of jealousy and the nitty gritty details of his early publishing deals. Laura also shares the story of a pivotal moment that lead to her being a songwriter. Ferocious talent, wit, and sincere humility rarely come together like they do in Grammy winner Luke Laird. Since moving to Nashville from a small farming town in Pennsylvania, Laird has become one of country and pop's top songwriters and producers. The numbers are staggering: 52 radio singles –– 24 of which were Billboard No. 1 hits and 5 of which were in the Top 5 –– 2 Billboard No. 1 singles as a producer, and more than 125 released cuts fill his catalog. In four separate years, every single released that Laird wrote peaked at No. 1 on the Billboard charts. He earned ACM Songwriter of the Year honors in 2015, and was named BMI Songwriter of the Year in 2012. As a producer, Laird has helped shape some of music's most critically acclaimed projects of the last decade. He co-produced Kacey Musgraves' 2013 debut, Same Trailer, Different Park, which garnered Grammy honors for Best Country Album and an ACM Album of the Year win. In 2015, he returned to the studio with Musgraves to co-produce her triumphant sophomore release, Pageant Material. Laird earned his second Grammy for Best Country Song with Musgraves' “Space Cowboy” in 2019. He also has producer credits on Thomas Rhett, Ingrid Michaelson, Brett Eldredge, Steve Moakler, Everette, Kassi Ashton, Anna Vaus and more. A slew of Grammy, ACM, CMA, and other nominations line Laird's resume, which also includes six CMA Triple Play Awards, four NSAI “Songs I Wish I'd Written” Awards, the 2012 BMI Country Song of the Year trophy for Rodney Atkins' “Take a Back Road,” and more. His list of No. 1 singles reads like a carefully curated playlist of soulful contemporary country: “Hard To Forget” (Sam Hunt); “Fast” and “I See You” (Luke Bryan); “Head Over Boots” (Jon Pardi); “T-Shirt” (Thomas Rhett); “Gonna” and “Hillbilly Bone” (Blake Shelton); “Talladega,” “Give Me Back My Hometown,” and “Drink In My Hand” (Eric Church); “American Kids” (Kenny Chesney); “Sunshine & Whiskey” (Frankie Ballard); “One of Those Nights” (Tim McGraw); “Downtown” (Lady Antebellum); “Somebody's Heartbreak” (Hunter Hayes); “Beat This Summer” (Brad Paisley); “Pontoon” (Little Big Town); “You” (Chris Young); “A Little Bit Stronger” (Sara Evans); “Take A Back Road” (Rodney Atkins); and “Temporary Home,” “Undo It,” “So Small,” and “Last Name” (Carrie Underwood). Other artists who have recorded Laird-penned songs represent a jaw-dropping grab bag of genres: George Strait, Maren Morris, Dierks Bentley, Miranda Lambert, Brandy Clark, Toby Keith, Jake Owen, Steve Moakler, Sister Hazel, Ingrid Michaelson, Ashley Monroe, Sam Hunt, Angaleena Presley, Nikki Lane, Darius Rucker, Jason Aldean, Sheryl Crow, Brett Eldredge, Florida Georgia Line, Ne-Yo, Neal McCoy, Amy Grant, and many more. Laird recently released his own record, Music Row, that offers an intimate look into his journey from Hartstown to Nashville. The first-ever record from one of music's most trusted creators and collaborators, Music Row is a songwriter's story, traversing childhood, grief, addiction, family, and the community he loves. The songs are deeply personal and sometimes raw, all delivered by the songwriter himself. Today, Laird writes for and co-owns Nashville-based publishing and management company Creative Nation with his wife, Beth. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

We'll revisit the Carter Family this week on Deeper Roots with a collection of covers by their family's inheritors, classic country and bluegrass favorites, as well as contemporary Americana artists. Aside from being a key ingredient in the ‘big bang' of country music that occurred at the Bristol, Tennessee recordings in 1927, they would establish a rich catalog of songs and a monument to what American country music would hold as a torch for generations to come. The gathering of the elements of prose, poetry, passages and melodies that A. P. Carter gathered over his years of wandering predates the Lomax era and crossed the threshold when the 1927 encounter with Ralph Peer made history. We'll hear from The Carters, but also Johnny Cash, Ashley Monroe, Loretta Lynn, Red Allen, and Emmylou Harris (among others) in our show today. Tune in for some of the classics from the family Carter.
By the age of nine, Jessi Alexander had taught herself how to play Elvis Presley's “Love Me Tender” by ear on her grandparent's piano. By the time she was 11 years old, she was already writing her own songs. Alexander first gained prominence thanks to her work on Miley Cyrus' “The Climb.” Throughout her career, she's collaborated with multiple artists including Luke Combs, Tim McGraw, Miranda Lambert, Midland, Jason Aldean, Thomas Rhett, Trisha Yearwood, Celine Dion, Ashley Monroe and Midland. Additionally, she's earned an NSAI Song of the Year honor, as well as ACM and CMA awards for Song of the Year with Lee Brice's “I Drive Your Truck.” Listening to Jessi, you'll wish you were a songwriter.
We had the pleasure of interviewing Meghan Linsey over Zoom video! No. 1 Billboard recording artist, Meghan Linsey, recently released her latest single, "If You Need Me Don't." This project is bringing The Voice alum back to her soulful, blues-driven New Orleans roots. Linsey recruited a stellar lineup of musicians for the track.. The single was produced by Linsey's husband and GRAMMY-nominated producer, Tyler Cain (Gramps Morgan, Ashley Monroe, Aloe Blacc). About Meghan Linsey:With her soulful voice and unique ability to rattle the rafters with gritty vocals, Meghan Linsey knows no boundaries in the realm of music. Linsey captured the hearts of America along with the ear of Scott Borchetta, a judge on the CMT reality singing competition Can You Duet. She won the show and Borchetta, the head of Big Machine Records, immediately signed the country-soul duo Steel Magnolia to his label. Success came quickly after the debut single “Keep on Lovin' You” catapulted to the Top 5 on Billboard. The pair toured with superstar acts including Brad Paisley, Bob Seger and Reba and appeared on The Late Show with David Letterman and Jimmy Kimmel Live. Linsey embarked on her solo career writing and releasing two EP's before getting a call in 2015 from a producer for NBC's Emmy award-winning show, The Voice. During her time on The Voice, Linsey landed at No. 1 on the Billboard Christian chart with her rendition of "Amazing Grace" and had multiple No. 1's across all genres of the iTunes chart. She was crowned the season eight runner-up and was the first contestant in The Voice history to perform an original, self-penned song on the show's finale. We want to hear from you! Luke Laird is one of Nashville’s most successful songwriters. He has written two dozen #1 country hits, earning him six separate CMA Trip Play awards, each of which recognizes the achievement of penning three #1 country songs within a 12 month period. The two-time Grammy winner has been named both ACM and BMI Country Songwriter of the Year. Highlights of his catalog include Kasey Musgraves’ “Space Cowboy” which earned him a Grammy for Country Song of the Year, Rodney Atkins’ “Take a Back Road” which was named BMI Country Song of the Year, Little Big Town’s “Pontoon” which earned an ACM nomination for Song of the Year, and Tim McGraw’s “Diamond Rings and Old Barstools,” which was nominated for a Country Song of the Year Grammy. Two of his most revered songs are Kenny Chesney’s “American Kids” and Eric Church’s “Give Me Back My Hometown,” which were both nominated for CMA Song of the Year, ACM Song of the Year, and the Grammy for Country Song of the Year. Laird built his reputation as a country chart topper with the Carrie Underwood hits “So Small,” “Last Name,” “Temporary Home,” “Undo It,” and “Mama’s Song” before going on to write chart toppers such as “A Little Bit Stronger” for Sara Evans, “Drink in My Hand” and “Talladega” with Eric Church, “One of Those Nights” for Tim McGraw, “Downtown” for Lady Antebellum, “I See You” and “Fast” for Luke Bryan, “Gonna” for Blake Shelton, “Head Over Boots” for Jon Pardi, and “T-Shirt” for Thomas Rhett. He’s written other massive hits for Miranda Lambert, Chris Young, Brad Paisley, Jason Aldean, Darius Rucker, and Frankie Ballard, and has had his songs recorded by George Strait, Zac Brown Band, Dierks Bentley, Maren Morris, Midland, Rascal Flatts, Lindsay Ell, Ashley Monroe, Toby Keith, Sheryl Crow, Amy Grant, Florida Georgia Line, Jessica Simpson, and Cassandra Wilson featuring John Legend. In addition to his success as a songwriter, Laird has produced Thomas Rhett, Brett Eldredge, Jake Owen, Sam Hunt, Ingrid Michaelson, and Kasey Musgraves, earning Grammy recognition for his work producing her albums Same Trailer Different Park and Pageant Material. He recently released his first album as an artist, the deeply personal Music Row.
If Waylon Payne’s voice and music don’t pull you in, his incredible story of resilience will. From pulling himself up from rock bottom, to the country music in his blood and in his bones, Waylon is absolutely a force to be reckoned with. In addition to his own music, he’s also penned hits for Miranda Lambert, Lee Ann Womack, Ashley Monroe + more. Listen on as Chris takes to Zoom again this week to chat with Waylon about his new record “Blue Eyes, The Harlot, The Queer, The Pusher & Me”, and his incredible journey as a country music singer/songwriter.
We had the pleasure of interviewing Waylon Payne over Zoom! Waylon Payne is a multi-talented artist known for his talent and passion for singing, songwriting, playing instruments, and acting. He’s the son of the two established artists, Jody Payne, an iconic guitarist, and Sammi Smith, a Grammy Award-winning singer. You really know how the fruit doesn’t fall far from the tree. He was born in Nashville, Tennessee, and grew up being with his mother on tour. He was under the supervision of Sammi’s brother and sister-in-law who were living in a strict Christian household. It was Waylon’s inspiration to enroll in a seminary with the goal of becoming a minister. Apparently, as he got used to and fancied the taste of marijuana, alcohol, and music, these were against the perspective of his aunt and uncle. His career in the field of music was molded when he was taking chances to perform in the clubs of Los Angeles in California. Being featured in different renowned clubs across the country and partnered with flourishing artists and musicians bought him a seat in the music industry. He started writing, singing, and recording his creations alongside being with his friends who helped him build a name. One of which is Keith Gattis who is a producer at that time. One opportunity led him to another. Carnival Music was the first record label that signed him. Since then, he wrote songs for towering artists in the music industry such as Miranda Lambert, Cory Marrow, Ashley Monroe, Aaron Lewis, Charlie Robison, and Lee Ann Womack who was nominated for Grammy’s for Solitary Thinking released in 2010. https://twitter.com/WaylonPaynehttps://www.facebook.com/WaylonPayneMusic/https://music.apple.com/us/artist/waylon-payne/15558247American Songwriter Podcast Network

On Episode 118, I am joined by singer-songwriter Waylon Payne. At the end of this week (Friday, September 11), Payne will be releasing Blue Eyes, The Harlot, The Queer, The Pusher and Me, the long-awaited follow-up to his 2004 debut album, The Drifter. This new album is quite the opus for Payne as he details the struggles, pain, heartache, relapse, growth, beauty, and strength of the past decade (and really, his entire life). Like the greats before him, Payne is a sharp-witted poet and gifted storyteller who can turn a phrase with the absolute best of them one minute and deliver genuine gut-punches and teary-eyed ballads the very next.During this interview, we talk about the writing and recording of Blue Eyes, creating cinematic moods, processing grief, the strength & beauty found on Blue Eyes, his time out in Los Angeles, writing with the likes of Pat Green, Lee Ann Womack, Wade Bowen, & Ashley Monroe, old notebooks of songs, essays, new country artists like Logan Ledger & Zephaniah OHora, and a few great stories about his mother, the late Sammi Smith (Which, he mentions listening to "Today I Started Loving You Again" so listen here). This episode's presenting partner is Desert Door Texas Sotol. Yeah, I was like, ‘Where is this going to go?’” Beer: Pabst Blue Ribbon (Milwaukee, Wisconsin) Poems: Sun in Days by Meghan O’Rourke Girl Crushes: Judge Jill Karofsky (Wisconsin); Ashley Monroe (@brewedblackgirl on Insta); and Fiona Apple This week, we’ve got a long one but we promise it’s a good one. As we celebrate a whole year (!!!) of No Rhyme or Refill, we decide to switch things up. Alyx talks about her favorite trash beer (aka the best beer) — PBR — and Erica talks about Sun in Days by Meghan O’Rourke. Both Alyx and Erica own the book, but Erica 100 percent forgot that she was with Alyx when Alyx bought the book. What are you gonna do? The 26th episode stays shallow with a light beer, and goes deep in a discussion about autoimmune disease, hopelessness, and a body’s betrayal. Special thanks to our special guest, Sam Roberts, who loves PBR and reading poetry out loud when he thinks Alyx is in the room. Cheers!

However, as Mike "McDuck" Olson states, The concept was abandoned for something that actually sounded good. Mike Olson Most members were already playing instruments at a young age and some even had classical training. However, their influences came mainly from the music they heard at home. The three-time Grammy winner, two-time ACM Songwriter of the Year, and star of NBC's Songland joins us to talk about a few of his 40 #1 hits, including "Mama's Broken Heart," "American Kids," "Vice," "Body Like a Back Road," and more. EPISODE DETAILS: PART ONE Scott and Paul put in a plug for Pearl Snap Studios! PART TWO - 3:02 mark The guys have a conversation about some of the worst cover songs of all time. PART THREE - 12:06 mark Paul and Scott head over to Shane's Los Angeles home to get his thoughts on being in a band with LeAnn Rimes when they were little kids; why he used to pray that God would give him another dream other than songwriting; how he had to wrestle with questions of authenticity and sexual identity to discover his artistic voice; the way that Kenny Chesney anointed him that opened the floodgates of commercial success; who he calls his favorite singer of all time; which of his hits he was most shocked was released as a single; what he thinks of the critics who say “Body Like a Back Road” drifted too far from country’s traditions; which of his songs he suspects other songwriters don’t like; the reason The Book of Mormon musical had a huge influence on him; and why joining the cast of NBC's Songland was so fulfilling. ABOUT SHANE MCANALLY With 40 #1 singles to his credit in the last decade, Shane McAnally is already one of the most successful country songwriters and producers of all time. After a brief career as an artist he reinvented himself as a behind-the-scenes hitmaker when Lee Ann Womack found success with his song “Last Call.” The floodgates soon opened with a steady stream of #1 hits, including “Somewhere with You” and “Come Over” for Kenny Chesney, “Alone with You” for Jake Owen, “Kiss Tomorrow Goodbye” for Luke Bryan, The Band Perry’s “Better Dig Two,” and “Downtown” by Lady Antebellum. Many of his songs have gone on to be recognized by the ACM, CMA, and Grammy awards, including “American Kids” by Kenny Chesney, “Take Your Time” by Sam Hunt, “Vice” by Miranda Lambert, “Drinkin’ Problem” by Midland, “Female” by Keith Urban, “Follow Your Arrow” and “Space Cowboy” by Kacey Musgraves, and Sam Hunt’s “Body Like a Back Road,” which set a new record by spending 34 weeks at number one on the Billboard country chart and was nominated by the CMA for Song of the Year two years in a row. Other highlights from Shane’s extensive song catalog include “Say You Do” and “Different for Girls” for Dierks Bentley; “Gonna Wanna Tonight” for Chase Rice; “Young & Crazy” for Frankie Ballard; “Stay a Little Longer” for Brothers Osborne; “Wild Child” for Kenny Chesney; “John Cougar, John Deere, John 3:16” for Keith Urban; “I Met a Girl” for William Michael Morgan; “T-Shirt,” “Unforgettable,” and “Marry Me” for Thomas Rett; “If I Told You” for Darius Rucker; “Written in the Sand” and “Make it Sweet” for Old Dominion; “Burn Out” for Midland, “Love Ain’t” for the Eli Young Band; and “Down to the Honkytonk” for Jake Owen. Shane has been nominated for the ACM Songwriter of the Year award six out of the last seven years, and has won the honor twice. He’s a three-time Grammy winner and currently stars as a mentor on the NBC television show Songland, where he works with up-and-coming writers to craft material for artists like John Legend, will.i.am, The Jonas Brothers, Meghan Trainor, and Aloe Blacc.

A modern day coal miner's daughter, Angaleena Presley grew up in a holler close to her childhood idol Loretta Lynn in the hills of Beauty, Kentucky. But this dynamic singer/songwriter has forged her own path writing fearless songs that capture the hard life inside this rugged part of Appalachia she calls home. Subscribe and download on your favorite podcast platform: Apple Podcasts, Google Play, Tune In, Stitcher. In this episode, we find out how Angaleena was called in the middle of the night to join Miranda Lambert and Ashley Monroe in what would become one of country music's hottest trios, the Pistol Annies. She shares how the three write music quite prolifically together and joked that she recently told her bandmates, "I hate you girls so much because I don't want to write with anyone else." Angaleena recently made a name for herself by standing up to country music radio who's opted out of playing female artists and addresses why she spoke up knowing it might ultimately hurt her career. Her latest album "Wrangled" won critical praise for highlighting this industry practice. There's a courage and strength that can be heard throughout Angaleena's catalog and she sings some of her best songs in this episode including, "Housewife's Prayer," "Cheer Up Lil Darling," "Pain Pills," "Wrangled," "Good Girl Down" and "Dreams Don't Come True." Robert K. Oermann hosts this music-filled, story-driven journey with the producer, Brad Newman adding insight along the way. Like us on Facebook. Follow us on Twitter and Instagram. Mike is a staple around town here in Nashville, and performs every Monday night at the Station Inn with a killer band. Recent years have seen Mike recording and performing with the likes of Vince Gill, Peter Rowan & Tony Rice, Tim O'Brien, Shawn Camp, Ashley Monroe, Chris Scruggs and countless others. We got into all of that, and got to discuss the impact of Roy Huskey Jr. on his bass playing, and a few great John Hartford stories to round it all off! Mississippi native Trent Dabbs relocated to Nashville in the early 2000s, where he’s carved out a niche on the local indie rock and Americana scene. Over the last twelve years, he’s released ten solo albums, a collaborative EP with edgy country sensation Ashley Monroe, and two retro R&B inspired projects with fellow singer/songwriter Amy Stroup under the name Sugar + The Hi-Lows. Earning significant critical acclaim, All Music predicted that Sugar + The Hi-Lows “just might be the next breakout band to capture the nation’s imagination.” Dabbs is a co-founder of the Ten out of Tenn artist collective, and has collaborated with high-profile songwriters, including Lori McKenna, Gabe Dixon, Joy Williams of the Civil Wars, and Kacey Musgraves, with whom he penned the Top 40 country single “Undermine” from the hit TV show Nashville. Other songs from the Trent Dabbs catalog that have appeared on the series include “World on Time,” “I’m Coming Over,” “Shine,” and “Don’t Put Dirt on My Grave Just Yet,” which became a Top 40 hit for series regular Hayden Panettiere in 2014. Many of the songs from Dabbs’ solo projects have landed on high profile TV shows such as The O.C., The Hills, Grey’s Anatomy, One Tree Hill, So You Think You Can Dance, The Vampire Diaries, Pretty Little Liars, Hawaii-Five-O, NCIS, and others. Dabbs contributed six songs to Ingrid Michaelson’s 2014 album Lights Out, including “Girls Chase Boys,” a Top 10 single on both Billboard’s Hot Rock Songs and Adult Top 40 chart. His latest album as a solo artist is called The Optimist.
Jamie Floyd is a West Palm Beach, Florida native who grew up in a musical family where she had the opportunity to perform as an opening act for Rascal Flatts, James Taylor, and others. By the age of 11 she’d signed her first production and publishing deals, eventually relocating to Nashville where she found success writing for other artists. She’s best known as the co-writer of “the Blade,” which became the title track to Ashley Monroe’s 2015 album and was named one of the top songs of the year by NPR Music. Co-produced by Vince Gill and featuring a guest appearance by Miranda Lambert, the song became the album’s centerpiece and helped earn the project a Grammy nomination for Best Country Album of the Year. Others who’ve recorded Floyd’s songs include former Brooks & Dunn front man Ronnie Dunn, who featured the song “Once” on his debut solo album, which went to the #1 spot on the Billboard country chart in 2011. Jamie’s song “Trouble Get Me Off Your Mind” was performed by R&B powerhouse Brian McKnight in Dolly Parton’s 2013 TV film A Country Christmas Story, while Hayden Panettiere’s character, Juliette Barnes, performed Jamie’s “Mississippi Flood” on the hit ABC television series Nashville. Floyd’s songs have also been heard on MTV’s Finding Carter, Lifetime’s The Client List, the CW Network’s Beauty & the Beast, and the Lifetime original movie, Manson’s Lost Girls. The SESAC honoree has enjoyed her cross-genre success by writing songs by day and waiting tables by night. The hard-working dual-career up-and-comer is a model for what it takes to carve out a space in Nashville’s increasingly competitive musical landscape. With her recent Sunshine & Rainbows EP attracting new fans and increased industry attention, Jamie Floyd is one to watch!
Long before Little Big Town took her song “Girl Crush” to the #1 spot on the Billboard country chart for a record-breaking thirteen consecutive weeks in 2014, Lori McKenna established herself as a highly respected singer/songwriter on the Boston-area folk scene. She recorded four independent albums in the late 1990s and early 2000s before country superstar Faith Hill released her versions of four of Lori’s songs in 2005. The pair appeared together on The Oprah Winfrey Show, and McKenna soon signed a deal with Warner Bros. Records. After releasing the Top 20 country album Unglamorous in 2007, she returned to her folk roots with the critically acclaimed independent albums Lorraine, Massachusetts, and Numbered Doors. McKenna has expertly balanced both her career as an emotionally evocative musical poet and consistent mainstream success as a commercial songwriter. Her songs have been recorded by Sara Evans, Tim McGraw, Mandy Moore, Keith Urban, Alison Krauss, Ashley Monroe, Hunter Hayes, Reba McEntire, Carrie Underwood, and others. Fiercely devoted to her husband and five children, McKenna still lives in her small hometown of Stoughton, Massachusetts. She has famously described herself as “just a housewife from Stoughton who likes to write songs.” But those songs have earned her multiple Boston Music Awards, a half dozen Top 40 singles, and Song of the Year honors from the Nashville Songwriters Association, International and, most recently, the Country Music Association.
Ashley Monroe visits the Billboard office just before kicking off her 2015 tour in New York. Host Chris Payne interviews her about her new album "The Blade," working with Jack White, whether or not we'll get more Pistol Annies music, what the Nashville songwriting circuit is like, and much more. MUD MORGANFIELD & KIM WILSON join forces to salute the 100th Anniversary of Mud's legendary father, Muddy Waters. Mud is a multi Blues Music and Living Blues nominee and bears an uncanny resemblance to his late fathers sound. Kim Wilson is the singer/harmonica player of the iconic roots group, The Fabulous Thunderbirds. The duo's 'For Pops (A Tribute to Muddy Waters)' is special album released on Severn Records that mixes some of Muddys better-known tunes with some lesser-known ones. The duo will be joined on WoodSongs by Billy Flynn on guitar and Barrelhouse Chuck on piano. They are part of the all-star team of players schooled in the Chicago-style blues that recoded on this historic album. ANGALEENA PRESLEY fits all of the criteria for a modern country music star. Hailing from the small mining town of Beauty in Eastern Kentucky, Presleys comparisons have likened her to the strong females of country music who have blazed the trail before her: Bobbie Gentry, Dolly Parton, Patty Loveless, and Angaleenas musical hero, Loretta Lynn. Writing in Nashville since 2002, Presley has established herself as a no-nonsense songwriter, unafraid to tackle the toughest of subject matters. Perhaps best known for her work as a member of the Platinum-selling Pistol Annies (with Miranda Lambert and Ashley Monroe) says she “doesnt know how to not tell the truth. That truth shines through on her much-anticipated debut album, 'American Middle Class'. It's real country music with Angaleena emerging as the clear, fierce, and joyous voice of her generation.

Hey everybody! I'm Kelly Sutton! We are so glad you’ve joined us for another Inside Music Row! We’ve got plenty of entertainment news for you this week, so let’s get started! In looking back at Billboard’s list of Top Live Acts of the past 25 years, it seems there is only one country artist in the Top Ten. Up there with acts like the Rolling Stones, U-2 and Bruce Springsteen, Kenny Chesney ranked number nine, in spite of taking two of the last five years off the road. Since becoming a full-fledged headliner in 2002, Kenny has sold close to 13 million tickets. Even though he’s not touring this year, he just can’t wait to hit the road again. Country rocker Aaron Lewis is gearing up for his fourth annual “It Takes A Community Foundation” benefit concert next week. Aaron and his wife founded the organization to work with local leaders to strengthen, engage and enrich their communities. Look for a rare acoustic performance from Staind to complete the night in Florence, Massachusetts June 27th. For more info, check out the foundation’s website. (Graphic ITACF.org) Kenny Rogers has been instrumental in changing the lives of kids across America through the Kenny Rogers Children’s Center in Sikeston, Missouri. Kenny doesn’t just lend his name to the organization, but fights for funding for the center and lends a hand with benefit shows to raise money. He’s been supporting the center now for almost forty years, and for him…the chance to help over 450 special needs children each month is something that will never get old. Bad Company has more to celebrate this summer than just another tour with Lynyrd Skynyrd. They are reissuing their first two classic albums on vinyl beginning July first. Both “Bad Company” and “Straight Shooter” will contain all the original packaging. Many of the tracks from these two albums have become staples of classic rock radio stations around the world. Check out the tour through the month of July, but keep up with them online at Bad Company dot com. Zac Brown Band’s “Southern Ground Music and Food Festival” will return to Charleston, South Carolina this fall for their fourth annual celebration. Look for Ashley Monroe, Blues Traveler and more to join in the fun October 11th and 12th. Now it's time to go “Inside The Song.” Songwriters are always keeping an ear open for potential hits, no matter the time nor the place. John Oates was on a working vacation when he came across the inspiration for “Six Men,” which is featured on his latest “Good Road To Follow” project.
