Throughout the 2024 presidential campaign, President-elect Donald Trump railed against colleges and universities for being too expensive, too partisan and too “woke.”Trump's anti-elite, anti-immigration tone channeled the frustrations of many working-class Americans — and led him to a decisive win at the polls. So, with Trump returning to the White House for a second term, how much of his higher education message is rhetoric and how much is potential policy? And what comes next for students and colleges? As they wrap up this election year season, Kirk and Jon explore how college may change under a new Trump administration and ask a simple question: what comes next on campus? We hear from Michael Brickman, who worked as a senior advisor in the U.S. Education Department during Trump's first term, and Ted Mitchell, president of the American Council on Education, the nation's biggest association of colleges and universities. Then, Jennifer Thornton with the Business Higher Education Forum and Maria Flynn with Jobs For the Future explain why on-the-job training through apprenticeships is one policy likely to move forward quickly in a second Trump administration. We also hear from students who backed Trump and those who fear his return to the Oval Office, including Jenson Wu with The Trevor Project, who tells us a second Trump term could have a significant impact on LGBTQ college students.

The NeighbourFood Podcast

This week, we decided to revisit a classic episode from the NeighbourFood podcast archives. As you may have heard, the World Potato Congress that was recently hosted in Dublin, we felt this was a topical and fun episode and a fun look at Ireland's love affair with the humble spud. Throughout this episode we have with lots of contributors who tell us why this is. We speak to food writer John McKenna of McKenna's Guides about Ireland's romantic connection to the food that let us down in our past and yet how we return time and time again, like a faithless lover to the spud we love so well. Did you know the process of flavouring crisps was invented here in Ireland? That's right and Tayto Crisps are responsible for the world-famous cheese and onion flavour! We tracked down Peter Murphy, son of Joe “Spud” Murphy, the founder of Tayto who told us about his entrepreneurial dad, his Peter Pan existence and that Ah-Ha moment when they stumbled across the much-loved Cheese and Onion flavour combination. There are small farmers throughout the country growing potatoes for their local market. We speak to Maria Flynn of Ballymackenny Farm Potatoes who taking over the family farm, realised they were never going to survive on glowing Roosters and Queens alone. So they took a chance on growing heritage and heirloom speciality potatoes and targeting chefs with their more unusual produce. When the pandemic hit, they lost 100% of their customers overnight, so we hear their story of survival. Now, do you think it's possible to live on Potatoes alone? We find a man in India who claims to do just that. The Aloo Baba lives in the mountains in Pushkar, India and eats 10kg potatoes a day!!!! That's some feat, but he claims it keeps him young and gives him clarity. Vikrant Naidu, chef at The Lodge, Myrtleville, Cork steps in to translate and also gives us an insight into the culture of potatoes in his home county of India. And finally, potatoes are far more than a carbohydrate on our plate, they also make an interesting ingredient in spirits, such as Poitin. Michael O'Boyle of Baoilleach Distillery in Donegal explains why spuds were sometimes used in the mashbill of poitín makers back in the day and when he chooses to continue this tradition in his own poitin collection “Mulroy Bay”. Enjoy this spudcast full of poppy love. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

In this episode of Work in Progress, as the Horizons 2022 conference kicks off in New Orleans, I speak to Jobs for the Future (JFF) president and CEO Maria Flynn. There's a shift in thinking about the path to career success. There's a growing awareness that four-year degrees don't have to be the gold standard, that skills and credentials are just as important, maybe more so for starting or advancing careers. Flynn and I talked about this transformation and about how JFF is spreading the word about non-traditional career pathways. "It's really all about how we change the mindset in this country around what is success and what is the path to get there," explains Flynn. "At JFF, what we're really working on is how do we really broaden the discussion, change the narrative around the different high-quality pathways that exist for folks beyond high school. That could include registered apprenticeship, it can include community colleges, it includes industry-recognized credentials, and many options that can be stepping stone to a four-year degree or also stepping stones to great career opportunities and advancement," she continues. Flynn says despite a growing emphasis on credentials and skills, more employers and learning institutions still need to appreciate the value of competency over degrees. "On the employer side, by and large, employers see the four-year bachelor's degree as a proxy for career readiness. At JFF, us and a lot of our partner organizations, are doing work on the demand side to help them move more towards skills-based hiring and how to hire based on what someone can do, what they have the skills to do, versus just looking at the degree as the signal," says Flynn. A fun look at Ireland's love affair with the humble spud with lots of contributors who tell us why!We speak to food writer John McKenna about Ireland's romantic connection to the food that let us down in our past and yet how we return time and time again like a faithless lover to the spud we love so well. Did you know the process of flavouring crisps was invented here in Ireland? That's right and Tayto Crisps are responsible for the world famous cheese and onion flavour! We tracked down Peter Murphy, son of Joe “Spud” Murphy, the founder of Tayto who told us about his entrepreneurial dad, his Peter Pan existence and that Ah-Ha moment they stumbled across the much loved Cheese and Onion flavour combination. There are small farmers throughout the country growing potatoes for their local market and we speak to Maria Flynn of Ballymackenny Farm Potatoes. After taking over the family farm, they realised they were never going to survive on glowing Roosters and Queens alone, so they took a chance on growing heritage and heirloom speciality potatoes and targeting chefs with their produce. When the pandemic hit, they lost 100% of their customers overnight, so we hear their story of survival. Now do you think it's possible to live on Potatoes alone? We find a man in India who claims to do just that. The Aloo Baba lives in the mountains in Pushkar, India and eats 10 - 12 potatoes a day!!!! That's some feat, but he claims it keeps him young and gives him clarity. Vikrant Naidu, chef at The Lodge, Myrtleville, Cork steps in to translate and also gives us an insight into the culture of potatoes in his home country of India. And finally, potatoes are far more than a carbohydrate on our plate, they also make an interesting ingredient in spirits, such as poitín. Michael O'Boyle of Baoilleach Distillery in Donegal explains why spuds were sometimes used in the mash bill of poitín makers back in the day and why he chooses to continue this tradition in his own “Mulroy Bay” poitín collection. We hope you enjoy this spudcast full of poppy love. The combination of a unique economic moment and major new funding out of Washington is creating an opportunity to rethink workforce development policies and programs. But will the tough questions be asked that will lead to a significant reshaping of the nation's approach? Maria Flynn, president and CEO of Jobs for the Future, is hopeful, but is not yet seeing the “blue sky redesign” discussion she thinks is necessary. “We are largely operating public systems that were designed for a different era. A lot of the conversations now are about funding but are not questioning those underlying assumptions of 'are these the systems that we need for today and the future'? My answer to that is largely no,” says Flynn.  There's a lot to learn in this probing conversation with Futuro Health CEO Van Ton-Quinlivan about transforming American education and workforce systems, the growing corporate role in education, helping employers deliver on diversity, strategies to boost innovation, taking a regional approach to economic development and much more.

Today we're talking with President and CEO of Jobs For The Future (JFF), Maria Flynn. JFF is a national non-profit that drives transformation between higher education and the workforce. Maria says JFF is called upon by foundations looking for a non-profit to lead or manage major initiatives. The federal government utilizes them also, and they're now hearing from more and more corporations. Maria says the space is becoming increasingly important and changing rapidly. Oftentimes, people will get too insular, talking only to the people in their corner of the ecosystem. Maria believes to get the impact and transformation we want, we need to start connecting dots in different ways. She says the skills that the workforce needs and that higher ed isn't focusing on enough are decisiveness and confidence. Higher ed does a great job around critical thinking and problem-solving, but how are they preparing them to be decisive leaders? We have to teach these skills through applied learning, taking the concepts and putting them into practice. Maria was part of the leadership team at JFF for nine years before she became CEO five years ago. They've been able to scale the nonprofit into an organization that's having a global impact. They knew in order for them to scale and have the impact they want, they need to be relevant to this moment and the moments in the future. Furthermore, they looked closely at what the skills and competencies were in order to meet the needs of the companies coming to them for help. Maria says you also have to focus on raising money and investing it into the systems you use. She feels many nonprofits don't know how to emphasize the importance of unrestricted, or flexible, dollars. You have to be intentional about how you're operating in the market. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/innovationalliance/message
