In this episode, we're joined by Fleur (she/her), who is a mother to an almost two-year-old daughter named Prim. Fleur works runs her own business, Umi Wellbeing, as somatic health and wellness coach, predominantly for women. Fleur shares that it took over a year for her and her husband Will to conceive, which came as a surprise. Fleur conceived the week after her mother passed away, just before their initially planned start of IVF. Choosing private care under the guidance of an obstetrician, Fleur sought additional support by hiring a doula. However, due to Fleur contracting COVID-19 just before giving birth, her care transitioned to the neighbouring public hospital, and her doula was unable to attend. She discusses the impact of being COVID-positive during labour and the subsequent challenges she faced with postpartum anxiety, heightened by the recent loss of her mother. Fleur also reflects on her professional transformation, discussing how motherhood prompted a significant shift in her perspective on work. Formerly holding a high-ranking corporate HR position, she talks about the changes in her values and aspirations after becoming a mother. CW: This episode touches on the topic of foetal reduction, so I'll let you decide if you would prefer not to listen right now or come back to the ep at a later date. In this episode, we're joined by Georgia (she/her), who, along with her husband Matt, is a parent to triplets named Finn, Marlo, and Jude. Finn and Marlo are identical and shared a placenta, while Jude is fraternal and had his own placenta. In the first part of Georgia's story, Georgia shares the journey of discovering her pregnancy and the shock they experienced upon learning that she was carrying three babies. She speaks about telling her family and friends, and how the news of triplets surprised them as well. During the first trimester, Georgia experienced intense nausea and hunger. At their scans, they were told that there was a risk of miscarriage of one or two of the babies. Despite being offered the option of foetal reduction, Georgia and her husband were on the same page in their decision to go ahead with the triplet pregnancy. As the pregnancy progressed, Georgia had to come to terms with the likelihood of preterm birth, which is common with multiples. The second trimester went more smoothly, and by the third trimester, Georgia felt great and remained active while continuing to work. However, at the 28-week scan, they received unexpected news about uneven blood flow between the two babies sharing the placenta. This marked a turning point, as subsequent scans revealed restricted growth in the identical pair. Georgia received a steroid injection to aid in the development of the babies' lungs and faced the fear of an earlier hospitalisation than planned. Georgia was determined to carry the babies until 35 weeks, so when she was admitted to hospital after her 30 week scan, she was feeling unprepared to meet her babies sooner than anticipated. Despite her concerns, she managed to prolong the pregnancy for an additional 11 days, which would make a significant difference in the babies' time spent in special care. During that time, she felt a lot more comfortable with the prospect of meeting them. On the day of the scheduled caesarean section, a routine COVID-19 test revealed that Georgia was positive, although she showed no symptoms. This didn't affect her birth and she describes it warmly. In the surgery room, there were 13 people working, and a room next door with three humidity cribs, three special care nurses and paediatricians. The boys were born at 31 weeks and 4 days. After the birth, her positive COVID-19 status brought about various challenges for her and her family. Despite the circumstances, Georgia made the decision to visit and hold her babies while following the necessary precautions. Before her journey to the nursery, Georgia fainted, resulting in a code blue and the presence of a team of medical professionals. However, she persisted and was able to visit her babies in the nursery, although she remained with a catheter in. Stay tuned for Part 2 of Georgia's story, dropping later this week. In December of 2022, I traveled to Hong Kong, at some point en-route or in-country, I contracted covid. Backing up a step in preparation for the trip I was required to have a negative PCR before I could board the plane from the US as well as proof of vaccination and at least one booster shot. HKSAR Department of Health - Health Declaration Form (https://hdf.chp.gov.hk/dhehd/hdf.jsp?lang=en-us) Upon arrival, I was required to quarantine for 3 days as well as take a home test (referred to as RAT: Rapid Antigen Test, by the locals) every day for the first 7 days On the 2nd full day in HK, I was required to take another clinical PCR provided at a health center, free of charge. On the third day I received my PCR and RAT tests as Covid Positive. By law I was now required to quarantine in my hotel until I tested negative on 2 consecutive days. Since my symptoms were very mild, a sniffle and low grade temp, merely 2-3 deg above normal, I could stay in the hotel and was not required to transfer to a public health center. I was also required to register the positive results with a government website. This registration kicked off a series of events, including a visit from a health representative. (he stood in the hall, I was not permitted to leave the room) I was Required to install an app on my phone called "Stay Home Safe'' and to wear a wristband that I presume was a GPS and possibly temp/pulse tracking device that connected to my phone by bluetooth. The agent installed the app, and synced the watch to it. The complete shownotes are available downloaded from http://bookewyrmm.42web.io/covid.html
