Join Braden, Chris, and Adam as they discuss Hironobu Sakaguchi's The Last Story, including a brief recollection of Project Rainfall and what it was like to talk about JRPGs on the internet approximately 14 years ago. It's not all horror stories though, as they also cover the game's unique approach to combat, its non-unique approach to storytelling, and why basically no one talked about it after release (hint: it's Xenoblade's fault.) Our hosts found a game they actually enjoyed for once, which is good since the next game they're playing is going to be an absolute nightmare.  Please consider donating to the National Network of Abortion Funds: abortionfunds.org/donate If you've been enjoying the podcast, please consider supporting us at https://www.patreon.com/DeepListens If you like our new art and want to commission some of your own, reach out to Tyler at tylerorbin.net

Send us a textAlong the towpath, the battle between winter and spring has begun with days of warmth and days of sleet. Although even the young ducks teach us a lesson in conflict avoidance. Join us tonight as we celebrate the lives of two people who were central to the creation of Nighttime on Still Waters.      Journal entry:12th March, Wednesday.“The day winds down.A last walk along the canal side.Pebbled rings form in the open water.A kick of sleetDrives against my face.Captivated by the golden sunShining through rain mist.Such unimagined golds.Behind meA pale rainbowBows and fades to such majesty.” Episode Information:This episode is dedicated to the memory to two people without whom this podcast would not have been created: Michael Goode and Clifford DeHaven. Among many things, Clifford was a great musician. One of his musical incarnations was as 'Mournful Hornet' which seemed to capture his offbeat character and heart. You can hear him on SoundCloud. For more than four decades, he wrote stories relentlessly confronting the mob, corrupt politicians, and greedy bureaucrats. As a result, he was often threatened—enough that he and his friend and fellow investigative reporter, Arthur Kane, sometimes joked about reporting on these threats if they were ever acted upon. Then, in the spring of 2022, German received a tip about abuses at a little-known county office. His subsequent investigation unearthed a scandalous, sexually incriminating video of a rising politician. The resulting stories in the Review-Journal ended the man's political aspirations. Less than six months later, on September 3, German's lifeless body was discovered outside his home with multiple stab wounds. Some of her fondest childhood memories involve long afternoons at the library and then reading late into the night. More than ten years ago, she began journaling about the books she read and turned that passion into writing about books. Her first forays were as a guest reviewer on a friend's blog, but she soon realized she wanted to be reviewing and talking about books on a blog of her own. From there, Novel Visits was born. That was in 2016 and, though the learning curve was steep, she loves being a part of the book community. Novel Visits focuses on new novel reviews (print and audio), previews of upcoming releases, and musings on all things bookish.

This follow-up to the Adventure duology had a lot of interesting ideas that stumbled in execution thanks to an infamously troubled development cycle, and is seen by many as the start of the series' downfall. The translations I have read from or referenced in these episodes include: Jeffrey Gantz, Early Irish Myths & Sagasand The Mabinogion; Thomas Kinsella, The Táin; Patrick Ford, The Mabinogi and Other Medieval Welsh Tales; Ann Dooley & Harry Roe, Tales of the Elders of Ireland; Nessa Ní Shéaghdha, The Pursuit of Diarmuid and Gráinne; Kenneth Jackson, A Celtic Miscellany. The nonfiction books I've relied on include: James MacKillop, Oxford Dictionary of Celtic Mythology; Mark Williams, Ireland's Immortals: A History of the Gods of Irish Myth; and the book/documentary series that got me started on it way back when: Carmel McCaffrey and Leo Eaton's In Search of Ancient Ireland. As it had been prophesized, Grady Hendrix, author of The Final Girl Support Group, My Best Friend's Exorcism, and Paperbacks from Hell, has returned, fulfilling his destiny to complete this trilogy, with a book that bears almost no resemblance to either of the books that came before it, and seems obsessed with the idea that a best-selling author could literally save humanity with their stories.

The story focuses on a group of mercenaries looking for work on Lazulis; one of their number, Zael, dreams of becoming a knight. After receiving the mystical "Mark of the Outsider", Zael becomes involved with a noblewoman named Calista in an ongoing war between humans and the beastpeople, the Gorak.
