Has there been any time when a re-release wasn't lazy or a cash grab? Was the "Blurred Lines" lawsuit a justifiable one? Here are some of the topics that we go over in this episode: How have re-releases for Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On" been handled?Have posthumous releases for J Dilla been handled more respectfully than for most other artists? Are The Eagles best as a singles band, rather than an album band?Did 80s hair metal, glam, and arena rock bands sound better during their 70s era than their 80s era?Was "Joshua Tree" the last good and true U2 album?
From James Brown to Stockhausen, the influences which fed into Miles Davis's 1972 album On The Corner are explored by Matthew Sweet and guests, 50 years after its release. Bill Laswell, Chelsea Carmichael, Kevin LeGendre and Paul Tingen join Matthew to celebrate an album that was dismissed by some jazz critics as evidence of Davis 'selling out' when it came out, but that has gone on to be appreciated as an important and influential milestone. Producer: Torquil MacLeod Bill Laswell's many recordings and productions include Panthalassa: The Music of Miles Davis 1969-1974. Chelsea Carmichael is a saxophonist and composer. Her most recent album is The River Doesn't Like Strangers. Paul Tingen is the author of Miles Beyond: The Electric Explorations of Miles Davis, 1967-1991. Kevin Le Gendre is one of the presenters of BBC Radio 3's J to Z broadcast Saturdays at 5pm You can hear Matthew and Kevin exploring the politics, history and music which fed into Marvin Gaye's What's Going On in a previous episode of Free Thinking https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m0011l7t Radio 3 will be broadcasting a range of programmes from the London Jazz Festival between Nov 11th and 20th https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m0011l7t

Actor James Purefoy joins Nikki Bedi and Richard Coles to talk about Fisherman's Friends One and All. From Mark Antony in Rome to The Black Prince in A Knight's Tale, James talks about his long and wide-ranging career. The Singh Twins are visual artists whose colourful and acclaimed work draws on traditional Indian techniques, Western medieval illuminated manuscripts and contemporary Western culture. They talk about their close bond and identifying as 'twindividuals'. Adeline Vining found a vintage Dior dress belonging to her grandmother in a suitcase in the attic. When she posted a TikTok of herself wearing the dress, she went viral. Fashion historians got involved, suggesting the dress was made by Christian Dior himself, and estimating its worth at £35,000. The discovery also helped Adeline uncover the story of her grandmother's life. Lesley Pearse has been a bestselling novelist for many years, and has lived an extraordinary life. After spending time in an orphanage, she found herself working as a bunny girl in Soho in her teens. When she became pregnant she was forced to give her son up for adoption. Years later she has reconnected with her son, and discovered the huge family she never knew she had. Also we have the Inheritance Tracks of producer and DJ Paul Oakenfold, who chooses Elvis Presley's Rubberneckin' and Marvin Gaye's What's Going On. Fisherman's Friends: One and All is in cinemas from 19th August. The Singh Twins' exhibition ‘Slaves of Fashion' is on at FirstSite in Colchester until 11th September. Lesley Pearse's latest novel Deception is available now. Producer: Tim Bano

In the mid 2010s, there existed an uneasy peace between Britain's Twitter-using centre-left and elements of the hard left and centre right. One of the era's quintessential venues for comrades of different political affiliations, but perhaps similar social and professional milieus, to find common ground was RUTH AND MARTIN'S (RAM) ALBUM CLUB, a tumblr blog in which a hand-picked selection of individuals drawn primarily from the worlds of light entertainment and political journalism would take it in turns to review an album they'd never heard before. In this exclusive RP investigation, RP crew affiliate and producer of smoking beats tom disso (@nailheadparty) joins Jack and Geraint to peek inside this capsule of a whole other time. We choose to focus on four reviews in particular, each of which are in their own way quintessentially RAM: Tim Farron on NWA's STRAIGHT OUTTA COMPTON, Matt Forde on David Bowie's HUNKY DORY, David Aaronovitch on the Wu-Tang Clan's ENTER THE WU-TANG: 36 CHAMBERS and, finally, Tom Watson on Bob Dylan's SLOW TRAIN COMING. To hear the next instalment of the RP RAM Album Club Club, in which we focus on Chris Addison's truly shocking review of Marvin Gaye's WHAT'S GOING ON, and Euan McColm's equally repellent take on Joni Mitchell's BLUE, subscribe over at patreon.com/reelpolitik

But are there any point of these reports if they just offer non-binding "recommendations"?In Sports: (22:29) Tony Hawk is one of my favourite sports figures of all time, so when I saw a piece on him, I felt the urge to give a legend some flowers as he begins to stop doing the tricks he pioneered decades ago.In the second Life segment: (38:00) The Tabloids have ripped into the BBC over their part in the Martin Bashir scandal, as have the Royal Family & politicians. “What's Going On?” I'll tell you: A rare and historically significant interview with legendary Motown arranger DAVID VAN DePITTE recorded for my BBC Radio 2 documentary series in 2002. Best known for his work on one of the most critically acclaimed albums of all time, Marvin Gaye's “What's Going On?”, Van DePitte's contribution is significant. I am not aware of any other pop arrangement that uses a non-stop counter melody in this way, giving the song a feeling of sophistication, depth and gravitas it would otherwise have lacked. He also worked on many records for Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson, Diana Ross, Smokey Robinson, the Four Tops, Funkadelic and Gladys Knight. Our interview allows us a rare view from the ‘shop floor' of Motown's production line, working with Gay, Berry Gordy, producers such as Frank Wilson and musicians such as his friend James Jamerson. No one with soul will want to miss this! This is killer stuff and you only get this with Radio Richard. LIKE this video! SUBSCRIBE to our social media! DONATE to our PATREON! Pretty Please! Save the Children Mercy Mercy Me Flyin' High (In the Friendly Sky) God is Love (Single Version) Wholy Holy Right On (Detroit Mix) What's Going On? Many artists have spoken out against the lack of charges towards the police officers involved in the death of Breonna Taylor, the 26 year old EMT who was killed by police on March 13th. Former detective Brett Hankison who was fired in June, now faces three counts of first degree wanton endangerment which is described as engaging in conduct which creates a substantial danger of death or serious physical injury to another person which is due the fact that he shot into three apartments close to Breonna's. The other two officers were not indicted. Alicia Keys responded to the news with a tweet saying “This is is a PRIME example of Rotten to the CORE!!! UnJust!!!! Disrespectful and BLATANT DISREGARD!!!! Rolling Stone has updated their list of top 500 best albums of all time. They originally came out with the list back in 2003 and they changed it up in 2012 but besides that it's pretty much stayed the same…until now. They have re-released the list from scratch and of course it is causing some debates. There are 154 albums that have been added to the list including Billie Eilish's 'when we all fall asleep where do we go' at number 397, Adele's 21 which made it on the list at 137, several albums from Taylor Swift and Drake made the list including 'Take Care' which made it to number 95. Beyoncé showed up a couple times at number 81 for her Self Titled album and 32 for Lemonade. Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On" replaced the Beatles' "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" in the top spot. The Billboard Music Award nominations have come out and Post Malone is leading the pack with 16 nominations followed by Lil Nas X who has 13. Kelly Clarkson is hosting the show and it's taking place on October 14th.
