Lepidext is a Lexington-based biotech company developing a natural, non-chemical solution to control one of agriculture's most damaging pests - the corn earworm. Founded by Dr. Bruce Webb, a University of Kentucky professor emeritus and virus researcher, Lepidext uses a modified virus to sterilize pest populations without harming the environment. The technology originated from research into a major equine reproductive crisis in Kentucky and evolved into a scalable product with the potential to replace traditional pesticides in the field. With a regulatory decision pending from the EPA, Lepidext is preparing for commercial rollout with a focus on farmer partnerships and sustainable impact. In this episode, Bruce and research scientist Dr. Mary Wallace share the journey from university research to ag-tech startup, the science behind their approach, and what's next for Lepidext as they bring biological pest control to market.Expect to learn how a virus discovered in nature became the foundation for a new kind of pest management, what the EPA approval process really looks like, and why timing, team structure, and field trials matter when scaling a startup in agriculture.Middle Tech is proudly supported by:KY Innovation → kyinnovation.com

The Conference's main partner IBM hosted a talk during Wednesday's Getting Grounded session focusing on approaches on AI, its uses and adaptations and our relation with it. Artificial intelligence provides us with new ways to communicate through products. In her talk, Mary Wallace portrays how AI can be used to improve consumers' retail experiences within various industries, such as the beverage and fashion industry. For example AI can be implemented to bring life to inanimate objects like clothes, drinks and beds. For brands, integrating AI into products serves as a gateway to other services. By collecting and analysing consumer data, brands can get to know their consumers on a deeper level. This allows brands to further personalise the consumer experience through their products. Thereby adding value to consumers as well as allowing brands to stay in the forefront of AI development, and differentiate themselves on the market. Consequently, Wallace states that “the product is no longer a product”.

Independent Thinking - Exploring a new era for retail and the high street
We've all heard the term Metaverse by now, but what is does it actually mean? What could it mean for how we do business or how we shop, for example? How we interact with brands? Will it be detrimental to bricks and mortar retail? And how relevant is it to independent retailers? The answers might not be what you think. This week's episode is with Mary Wallace, Retail and Customer Experience Consultant and member of IBM's Metaverse team. Mary's brilliantly animated and accessible way of talking about tech is one of the most refreshing things about this episode, as she helps us understand the many opportunities available to independent retailers in the metaverse, why the technology shouldn't lie solely in the hands of the ‘tech bros' and why co-creation is at the centre of making technology more meaningful. Welcome to Stories Come to Life. I am your host, Kathryn Lopez Luker. During this time of Covid, many people aren't able to use the library in the same way as in the past. To help bring more stories to more readers, Penguin Random House, Simon and Schuster, and MacMillan Publishers are allowing books that are normally unavailable for copyright reasons to be read out loud and shared with others until September 30, 2021. The stories that fall under that special permission will all be taken down on that date, so listen now, while they're available! Today's story is shared with permission of Simon and Schuster publishing company. When the steamship they are traveling on to join their father in Australia begins to sink, resourceful Mary Wallace, and her sister, Jean, rescue the four babies on board! Now they are floating in an open boat, somewhere in the Pacific, hoping to land on one of the hundreds of islands that must be out there. Here are the first chapters of Baby Island, by Carol Ryrie Brink. Now, sit back, relax, and listen to this story come to life!
The "legend" began in 1917 when Wisconsin native Louis "Gus" Roy, author of The Candle Book, and his mother moved to New Hampshire, looking to purchase a home with "history." He soon learned of how Mary Wallace had been born at sea and how the ship had been beset by pirates. He quickly purchased the colonial once owned by Ocean-Born Mary's son, Robert Wallace. Mary had lived in a different house a mile away with her son William, but Roy didn't let a little thing like facts stop him. He invented a fascinating story of Mary and her pirate benefactor, buried treasure, and a haunted house.

Society encourages women to be independent and to do it themselves. In the eyes of culture, those who do this are viewed as successful and worthy of notoriety and emulation. Yet, Jesus says apart from Him we can do nothing (John 15:5). Jesus says He is the Vine and His followers are the branches and if they abide, or rest, in Him they will bear fruit. His followers must be dependent on Him. This breakout session will focus on what abiding is and what it is not and practical suggestions for dependent on the Lord when the world tells them otherwise.

In this episode, AP Now’s Mary Schaeffer evaluates the rapidly evolving nature of the accounts payable function. She bases her views on two polls conducted by AP Now and shares insights from two colleagues, as well. She compares how the AP function was viewed negatively in many organizations 20 years ago with the more positive light it is seen in today. She shares that the image of the accounts payable department has improved in the last few years at over two-thirds of the organizations participating in a recent poll. Schaeffer also shares statistics on the number of organizations that are now receptive to having their accounts payable staff work remotely. The benefits are impressive (improved morale and lower turnover). She mentions that invoice automation is now something that is within the reach of every organization. Her colleagues also expect accounts payable departments to take advantage of newer technology such as blockchain and RPA. Mary Wallace expects continued pressure on organizations to become profit centers and she shares how this can be done. The podcast ends with Schaeffer telling listeners how they can a copy of the reports she mentioned as well as her consensus that the future is likely to encompass all the issues she and her colleagues discussed. We also found that that there is such a thing as original thought, and that inspirational thought can come from the mind of God.
