Bina Gehres, Director, received her master's in education from Western Maryland College in Westminster, MD in 1972. She was a teacher of the deaf in Dayton, Ohio and after moving to Rhode Island, taught at the Rhode Island School for the Deaf for three years. Bina then went into the healthcare field in Rhode Island in 1979 and became a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), where she worked in nursing homes, private duty healthcare agencies and doing home care etc. for 35 years. In 2007 she co-founded with composer and poet, Noreen Inglesi, a non-profit organization, Notable Works Publication and Distribution Co., Inc., which is dedicated to raising community awareness through the arts for environmental and social issues. Since 2004 to the present time (2024) and at the age of 75, Bina has been instrumental in organizing 3 - 5 original musical and poetic events a year in libraries, churches and open spaces specifically following the Notable Works mission concerning homelessness, domestic violence and especially the recent variances in our Earth's climate. Also, most recently Bina has collaborated with three others on a new musical called Sell Division: A Musical in Two Acts About Breaking the Chains of Perception which will be presented in the form of a live stage reading at the Community College of Rhode Island in Warwick, Rhode Island towards the end of 2024. Noreen Inglesi, co-founder and Artist in Residence for Notable Works, taught music for the Town of North Providence and the Community College of Rhode Island. Noreen was twice nominated for Teacher of the Year and received her Associates of Fine Arts Degree at the Community College of Rhode Island and her undergraduate and master's degree in music education and composition at the University of Rhode Island. She's received much recognition for her music and poetry which has been featured both nationally and internationally by the Insight Quartet in Italy, the Dallas Songwriter's Association, the Contemporary Record Society, The Music Educators' National Conference, the Culver Music Series in California and on the Women of Substance Music Podcast. Locally, Noreen's music has been featured by The American Band, The Nature Conservancy in Rhode Island, The State Ballet of Rhode Island, The Colonial Theatre, Verdant Vibes, Vibe of the Venue, the Westerly Band and WaterFire Providence. Noreen is also proud to be a member of Ocean State Poets and her poetry has been published by Crosswinds Poetry Journal, Nobel House, the National Library of Poetry, Rhode Island Bards, Frequency Writers, The Poetry Loft and Notable Works Publication. Her music has been recorded and released with the Contemporary Record Society, Andreu Marc Publications, The Music Library, Platinum Records and Notable Works Publication and Distribution Co., Inc. And just recently, Noreen wrote the musical “Sell Division” with three of her colleagues. Marianne Quinn, B.A, has been not only an author on this project but has served as a consultant regarding social issues and the prison system. Her experience with diverse cultures has informed the content of the musical, lending validity to the characters. She is a retired social worker of 25 years from the State of Rhode Island. Mary Zema is a career vocalist, singer/songwriter and guitarist. She began playing guitar at the age of seven and singing and writing songs at age ten. A native of Warwick, RI, Mary has played throughout New England. Her style is eclectic, pop, rock, ballads, electronic, etc. Her debut release, co-produced by Richard Bone, “Songs of Early Paradise” was in the top twenty on DMX radio New York. Mary recently released my second album “Whistles, Dimes and Dragonflies” and a video of the same name. She taught music in the Fall River Public School system for 33 years. She is presently performing with her band, “Throwback,” playing music from the 60s -90s.

In this chilling episode of The Halloween Podcast, host Lyle Perez, a Tennessee realtor with a penchant for the paranormal, takes listeners to the spooky Granite State—New Hampshire. Known for its lush forests and historical towns, New Hampshire is also home to some of the most haunted locations in America. From grand hotels to eerie castles, Lyle explores ten sites that harbor ghostly secrets and restless spirits. Featured Locations: The Mount Washington Hotel 310 Mount Washington Hotel Road, Bretton Woods, NH 03575 Built in 1902, this grand hotel is haunted by Carolyn Stickney, whose ghost is seen in Room 314 and the hallways, where she leaves behind a faint trace of her lavender perfume. Portsmouth Harbor Lighthouse 25 Wentworth Road, New Castle, NH 03854 Guiding sailors since 1771, this lighthouse is home to the spirit of Captain Thomas Ayers, who met a tragic end here and is now heard climbing the stairs in the dead of night. Pine Hill Cemetery Mains Street, Hollis, NH 03049 Locally known as "Blood Cemetery," this burial ground is haunted by Abel Blood, whose gravestone mysteriously changes at night. Shadowy figures roam among the headstones, adding to the eerie atmosphere. The Chase House 19 Hunking Street, Portsmouth, NH 03801 Built in 1762, the Chase House is haunted by a woman in a long dress, often seen looking out over the harbor, seemingly waiting for someone who will never return. Isles of Shoals Off the Coast of Portsmouth, NH 03801 These islands, including Smuttynose Island, are known for shipwrecks and the infamous Smuttynose Murders. Visitors often hear distant cries and see ghostly figures along the rocky shorelines. The Colonial Theatre 609 Main Street, Laconia, NH 03246 Opened in 1914, the Colonial Theatre is home to a former projectionist who still watches over the building. His shadowy presence is often spotted in the projection booth and the aisles after dark. Amos J. Blake House 94 Main Street, Fitzwilliam, NH 03447 Now a museum, this early 19th-century house is haunted by the spirit of a woman who moves through the rooms, leaving a sudden chill in her wake. New Hampshire State Hospital 105 Pleasant Street, Concord, NH 03301 Established in 1842, this former asylum is haunted by spirits of former patients. Visitors report seeing shadows in the windows and hearing faint cries echoing through the abandoned halls. Ocean-Born Mary House 45 Old Henniker Road, Henniker, NH 03242 Said to be haunted by Mary Wallace, who was born aboard a pirate ship, this house is known for sightings of Mary in a green dress and the scent of roses that fills the air. Madame Sherri's Castle Madame Sherri Forest, Gulf Road, Chesterfield, NH 03466 The ruins of Madame Sherri's lavish 1920s castle are still haunted by her ghost, who can be seen atop the crumbling stone staircase, welcoming guests to her eternal party. “I believe the world is a better place if there is more theatre in it. There is only more theatre in it if there are more people making it. So, I do everything I can to help inspire, educate people to make more theatre. Does that mean I can produce every show? Unfortunately not.”  What's in this episode? Get a sneek peak into the brand new musical The Griswold's Family Vacation! What exactly is producing? How do you pick a city to do an out of town tryout?  How does the industry treat multi-hyphenates? How are multi-hyphenates like small businesses? How does Ken commit to being an accessible producer? How Hal Prince inspired Ken by saying one simple thing.  What is successful producing?  Joy the Musical! “In the business world, if you invent a product – you are the creator of that thing. You are an artist. You just designed the thing – you made it out of nothing. And then you have to raise the money for it. So, you're producing it yourself. All those people that go on Shark Tank, they are raising the money, they are doing the things. No one says, “Ugh, how dare you!” No, that's what they do. That's what Sara Blakely had to do for Spanx, that's what Mark Zuckerberg had to do for Facebook – all of it. They create something and then they raise it – but in our industry people roll their eyes.” Ken Davenport (Producer) is a two-time Tony Award-winning Broadway producer whose credits include A Beautiful Noise, Once On This Island (Tony Award), The Play that Goes Wrong, Groundhog Day (Tony nomination), Deaf West Theatre's Spring Awakening (Tony nomination), It's Only a Play starring Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick, Macbeth starring Alan Cumming, Godspell, Kinky Boots (Tony Award), The Visit (Tony nomination) as well the Off-Broadway productions of Altar Boyz, The Awesome 80s Prom and many more. Davenport's productions have been produced internationally in over 25 countries around the world. He was the Executive Producer for North America for Andrew Lloyd Webber's Really Useful Group and is the Theatrical Consultant for Primary Wave Music Publishing. His blog has been featured in every major publication around the world, from the New York Times to Vanity Fair. He conceived the best-selling boardgame Be A Broadway Star (available on Amazon) and he is an avid golfer. Ken is a Massachusetts native, raised in Sturbridge, MA, who grew up going to shows at the Colonial Theatre. He dedicates his career to his late father, Dr. Kenny Dipchand Hasija, an Indian immigrant who always dreamed about going into the theater but encouraged his son to do so instead. Other productions in development include Harmony by Barry Manilow and Bruce Sussman, The Griswolds' Broadway Vacation, Joy and The Ten. www.kendavenport.com Instagram: @kendavenportbway Learn more about your ad choices. Today's trivia is brought to you by Perennial. Perennial's new plant-based drink “Daily Gut & Brain” is a blend of easily digestible nutrients crafted for gut and brain health. A convenient mini-meal, Daily Gut & Brain” is available now at the CVS Pharmacy in Wakefield. Now for some trivia. Did you know that Ellison Brown, widely known as “Tarzan” Brown, was a direct descendant of the last acknowledged royal family of the Narragansett Indian Tribe of Rhode Island? He was a two-time winner of the Boston Marathon in 1936 and 1939 and a 1936 U.S. Olympian. He ran the marathon in the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin and also qualified for the 1940 Summer Olympics, but these were ultimately canceled due to the outbreak of World War II. Tarzan Brown is one of two Native Americans to have won the Boston Marathon and the only Native American to have more than one victory. He was inducted into the American Indian Athletic Hall of Fame in 1973. Now, for our feature story: The Colonial Theatre's Shakespeare in the Park program, the much-loved, 36-year-old tradition that takes place in Wilcox Park each summer is asking input from its attendees. Nicholas Moore, vice president of the Colonial's board of directors said the theater is Honoring its mission to "grow and better serve the community and our regional schools,".  They're holding two "public input meetings" next week in hopes of engaging the community. "We have received a lot of enthusiasm from the community and from our audiences during our shows and we want to provide an opportunity for community members to give us feedback in a formalized setting ... and perhaps to even become more involved with the Colonial moving forward.” The sessions — the first scheduled for tomorrow, Friday, Sept. 17th, at noon and the second for Saturday, Sept. 18, at 10 a.m. in the United Theatre's Micro Cinema — are part of a major new initiative for the theater, Moore said. This initiative comes in the wake of "an enormously successful 2020-2021 season," he added, noting that last summer's "magnificent" production of "The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (abridged)[revised]" in Wilcox Park was one for the record books. She graduated from the UCONN in 1955 and married her husband, Donald, in 1956 following his graduation. Donald predeceased her on June 1, 2018. They were married for 62 years. What a joy to sit down with Kate Maguire this week. As the CEO and Artistic Director of the Berkshire Theatre Group, Kate lends incredible insight to the importance of developing new work and how to balance the artistic and financial needs of any production. Kate and Hal also share their magical first memories in the theatre. Kate Maguire is Artistic Director and CEO of Berkshire Theatre Group (BTG). In 2010, she oversaw the merger of two historic organizations: Berkshire Theatre Festival in Stockbridge, where Kate began in 1995, and The Colonial Theatre in Pittsfield, culminating in the creation of Berkshire Theatre Group. She is passionate in her belief that the arts open doorways to growth, that the experience of watching theatre, hearing music, seeing dance or visual art helps us all to understand the mystery of the human heart and ultimately transforms a community. In July 2020, Kate collaborated with Actor's Equity Association (AEA), state/local legislatures and healthcare leaders to earn Berkshire Theatre Group approval from AEA to produce the first musical in the United States (Godspell) followed by an outdoor production in December of Truman Capote’s Holiday Memories in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. Greetings, and welcome back to Horror Business. We have one awesome episode in store for you guys: today, we’re talking about 1982’s Halloween III and 2007’s Trick R’ Treat. First and foremost, we want to give a shoutout to our sponsors over at Lehigh Valley Apparel Creations, the premiere screen-printing company of the Lehigh Valley. Chris Reject and his merry band of miscreants are ready to work with you to bring to life your vision of a t-shirt for your business, band, project, or whatever else it is you need represented by a shirt, sweater, pin, or koozie. Head on over to www.xlvacx.com to check them out. Also, thank you to our Patreon subscribers. Your support means the world to us and we are eternally grateful for that support. Thanks! We start by briefly discussing what we’ve done lately involving horror. Liam and Justin talk about the Brooklyn Horror Film Festival and the films they saw, including Nightmare Fuel, Blood Quantum, The Shed, The Swerve, and 1BR. Liam talks about the recent Exhumed Films annual Horror-thon and some of the films he saw there, as well as seeing Parasite. Justin talks about attending the recent Exhumed Films Masters Of Horror event, seeing The Lost Boys at Frank Banko Ale House Cinemas and An American Werewolf In London at the Colonial Theatre in Phoenixville, as well as the films The Dead Don’t Die, Dry Blood, Wrinkles The Clown, 3 From Hell, Red Letter Day, The Girl On The Third Floor, Doctor Sleep, and Little Monsters, and the return of the TV series Castle Rock. We begin by talking about Halloween III. We give a history of the film and how John Carpenter initially meant for the series to be an anthology style series of films rather than a sequence of sequels, and briefly discuss our opinions on the franchise as a whole. We talk about some of the performances and what makes the franchise so good, and Justin discusses what hits so hard about the film. We dissect the film as an analogy for criticizing hoarding of wealth and consumerism, as well as some aspects of the film that could be perceived as anti-colonial. We talk about some of the performances in the film and our personal histories with the movie. Next up is Trick R’ Treat. We discuss how the film breaks outside of the box that many anthology films live and die by and how it is a relatively recent film to be considered a classic but is nonetheless beloved. We talk about the impact the film has had on Halloween culture, in that the idea of “the rules of Halloween” sprang from it. We briefly talk about the fact that this film has a strong sense of justice in that the bad guys often get what is coming to them and that many of the people who die deserve it. We examine the fact that despite the film’s relatively lighthearted tone, there are a few genuinely creepy moments. And finally we talk about the character Sam, who has become something of an iconic character over the years and was a wise branding move on behalf of the filmmakers. First and foremost, thank you to everyone and anyone who donated on Patreon, checked this episode out, or shared a tweet/shared a post on FB/gave us love by recommending us to someone. We love you forever for listening. Any questions, comments, suggestions for movies and guests, or if you yourself want to join us for a movie viewing or even an episode, can be sent to thehorrorbiz@gmail.com. Another View The Radio Show Podcast

It was in September, 100 years ago, that the film "Birth of a Nation" opened at the Colonial Theatre in Norfolk. Birth of a Nation is still considered one of the greatest and most important American films ever made for how it influenced Hollywood's visual storytelling conventions, however, it also made popular devestating stereotypes of African Americans, particularly Black men, as foolish, dangerous, predatory and in need of being controlled or killed. On the next Another View, we'll talk about how the creative community came together to fight against these stereotypes through the arts. "Birth of an Answer" is a celebration of 100 years of African American creative responses to Birth of a Nation. We'll talk with Actor, Director and Producer Tim Reid; Van Dora Williams, Associate Professor of Journalism and Communications, Hampton University; and Sarah Florini, PhD, Assistant Professor of Communications and Theatre Arts, Old Dominion University.
