Our Behind the Sound episodes seek to bring us, the concert goer, "backstage" so we can better understand how the iconic sound of a particular band is created.  It has become something of a tradition to do this with a tribute band that does such an incredible job re-creating the sound and visuals of a band that has incredible music, and is someone we can no longer catch a live show of.  This week we spend time with Start Making Sense, who've become the premier Talking Heads tribute band around.Fronted by Jon Braun, who bears an uncanny resemblance to David Byrne, this gathering of musicians have brought an incredible commitment to creating the quirky and brilliant music of the much-loved band. We'll spend time meeting everyone that makes up Start Making Sense, and see how it all comes together with Load-in and Sound Check, which at times is its own thoroughly enjoyable performance art.And then we'll share some of the songs from a recent performance at the Colonial Theatre in Phoenixville, PA and ask the band members to provide commentary throughout, both about their early stages and their fav moments from the road. The music of Talking Heads has excited, inspired, and healed folks worldwide since their first show at CBGB's in 1975. If David Byrne is one of the geniuses of modern times, then Start Making Sense is a tribute to genius. Start Making Sense celebrates the entire Talking Heads' catalog meticulously executing the sounds and iconic live visual elements in every performance. Together these skilled and dedicated musicians enjoy bringing the unique, infectious energy of a Talking Heads live show that you know and love to the stage.Don't miss this one!Text us your thoughts on this episode, and who should be OUR #NextFavBand...As always, our hope is to bring you "your next favorite band".  If you tuned in today because you already knew this musician - thank you very much!  We hope that you enjoyed it and would consider following us and subscribing so we can bring you your #nextfavband in the future.  And check out nextfavband.com for our entire catalog of interviews! If you have a recommendation on who you think OUR next favorite band should be, hit us up on social media (@nextfavband everywhere) or send us an email at nextfavband@stereophiliastudio.com.Thank you to Carver Commodore, argonaut&wasp, and Blair Crimmins for allowing us to use their music in the show open and close.  It makes everything sound so much better!Let's catch a live show together soon!#nextfavband #livemusic #music #musicinterview #musician  #singer  #guitar  #song  #newmusic  #explorepage  #instamusic #bestmusic #musicismylife #musicindustry #musiclife #songwriter #musiclover #musicfestival

The Trump administration has ramped up deportation efforts, saying they want to stop criminals from coming into our country illegally, but many people who are trying to go through the legal process of immigration and have no criminal history have found themselves detained by ICE, even when they're following every rule. To get a better understanding of the legal process, the barriers, and whether or not a legal status actually means protection, Racquel Williams talks with Blanca Pacheco and Peter Pedemonti, co-directors of New Sanctuary Movement, and Sarah Paoletti, Director of the University of Pennsylvania's Transnational Legal Clinic. Then, on Shara in the City, it's all about “The Blob”. Shara Dae Howard attends Blobfest, the annual celebration in Phoenixville that commemorates the 1958 sci-fi horror flick and the scene that was filmed at The Colonial Theatre. Bina Gehres, Director, received her master's in education from Western Maryland College in Westminster, MD in 1972. She was a teacher of the deaf in Dayton, Ohio and after moving to Rhode Island, taught at the Rhode Island School for the Deaf for three years. Bina then went into the healthcare field in Rhode Island in 1979 and became a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), where she worked in nursing homes, private duty healthcare agencies and doing home care etc. for 35 years. In 2007 she co-founded with composer and poet, Noreen Inglesi, a non-profit organization, Notable Works Publication and Distribution Co., Inc., which is dedicated to raising community awareness through the arts for environmental and social issues. Since 2004 to the present time (2024) and at the age of 75, Bina has been instrumental in organizing 3 - 5 original musical and poetic events a year in libraries, churches and open spaces specifically following the Notable Works mission concerning homelessness, domestic violence and especially the recent variances in our Earth's climate. Also, most recently Bina has collaborated with three others on a new musical called Sell Division: A Musical in Two Acts About Breaking the Chains of Perception which will be presented in the form of a live stage reading at the Community College of Rhode Island in Warwick, Rhode Island towards the end of 2024. Noreen Inglesi, co-founder and Artist in Residence for Notable Works, taught music for the Town of North Providence and the Community College of Rhode Island. Noreen was twice nominated for Teacher of the Year and received her Associates of Fine Arts Degree at the Community College of Rhode Island and her undergraduate and master's degree in music education and composition at the University of Rhode Island. She's received much recognition for her music and poetry which has been featured both nationally and internationally by the Insight Quartet in Italy, the Dallas Songwriter's Association, the Contemporary Record Society, The Music Educators' National Conference, the Culver Music Series in California and on the Women of Substance Music Podcast. Locally, Noreen's music has been featured by The American Band, The Nature Conservancy in Rhode Island, The State Ballet of Rhode Island, The Colonial Theatre, Verdant Vibes, Vibe of the Venue, the Westerly Band and WaterFire Providence. Her music has been recorded and released with the Contemporary Record Society, Andreu Marc Publications, The Music Library, Platinum Records and Notable Works Publication and Distribution Co., Inc. And just recently, Noreen wrote the musical “Sell Division” with three of her colleagues. Marianne Quinn, B.A, has been not only an author on this project but has served as a consultant regarding social issues and the prison system. Her experience with diverse cultures has informed the content of the musical, lending validity to the characters. She is a retired social worker of 25 years from the State of Rhode Island. Mary Zema is a career vocalist, singer/songwriter and guitarist. She began playing guitar at the age of seven and singing and writing songs at age ten. A native of Warwick, RI, Mary has played throughout New England. Her style is eclectic, pop, rock, ballads, electronic, etc. Her debut release, co-produced by Richard Bone, “Songs of Early Paradise” was in the top twenty on DMX radio New York. Mary recently released my second album “Whistles, Dimes and Dragonflies” and a video of the same name. She taught music in the Fall River Public School system for 33 years. She is presently performing with her band, “Throwback,” playing music from the 60s -90s.

Known for its lush forests and historical towns, New Hampshire is also home to some of the most haunted locations in America. From grand hotels to eerie castles, Lyle explores ten sites that harbor ghostly secrets and restless spirits. Featured Locations: The Mount Washington Hotel 310 Mount Washington Hotel Road, Bretton Woods, NH 03575 Built in 1902, this grand hotel is haunted by Carolyn Stickney, whose ghost is seen in Room 314 and the hallways, where she leaves behind a faint trace of her lavender perfume. Portsmouth Harbor Lighthouse 25 Wentworth Road, New Castle, NH 03854 Guiding sailors since 1771, this lighthouse is home to the spirit of Captain Thomas Ayers, who met a tragic end here and is now heard climbing the stairs in the dead of night. Pine Hill Cemetery Mains Street, Hollis, NH 03049 Locally known as "Blood Cemetery," this burial ground is haunted by Abel Blood, whose gravestone mysteriously changes at night. Shadowy figures roam among the headstones, adding to the eerie atmosphere. The Chase House 19 Hunking Street, Portsmouth, NH 03801 Built in 1762, the Chase House is haunted by a woman in a long dress, often seen looking out over the harbor, seemingly waiting for someone who will never return. Isles of Shoals Off the Coast of Portsmouth, NH 03801 These islands, including Smuttynose Island, are known for shipwrecks and the infamous Smuttynose Murders. Visitors often hear distant cries and see ghostly figures along the rocky shorelines. The Colonial Theatre 609 Main Street, Laconia, NH 03246 Opened in 1914, the Colonial Theatre is home to a former projectionist who still watches over the building. His shadowy presence is often spotted in the projection booth and the aisles after dark. Amos J. Blake House 94 Main Street, Fitzwilliam, NH 03447 Now a museum, this early 19th-century house is haunted by the spirit of a woman who moves through the rooms, leaving a sudden chill in her wake. New Hampshire State Hospital 105 Pleasant Street, Concord, NH 03301 Established in 1842, this former asylum is haunted by spirits of former patients. Visitors report seeing shadows in the windows and hearing faint cries echoing through the abandoned halls. Ocean-Born Mary House 45 Old Henniker Road, Henniker, NH 03242 Said to be haunted by Mary Wallace, who was born aboard a pirate ship, this house is known for sightings of Mary in a green dress and the scent of roses that fills the air. Madame Sherri's Castle Madame Sherri Forest, Gulf Road, Chesterfield, NH 03466 The ruins of Madame Sherri's lavish 1920s castle are still haunted by her ghost, who can be seen atop the crumbling stone staircase, welcoming guests to her eternal party. 2023 was maybe our most surprising year yet! Little did we know we would discover a specific theme and boy do we have a lot to say about it. Joe and Graham sit down to chat their favorite new releases for the year, favorite first time watches, and get a little unfocused. Which was actually perfect because it let topics such as physical media, theater viewings and a while lot more bubble to the surface.

I've been looking forward to sitting with Andrew Gibson, for quite some time and today was the day! If you've been to a play in NH recently you've probably seen Andrew. Okay, that may be a bit of a stretch, but, honestly, the guy has been on a tear lately! Pittsfield, the Majestic, the Colonial Theatre, Jean's Playhouse, etc. he's everywhere! And he freely talks about playing Spiderman for Marvel (true story, but, not the movies), his passion for voice-over work, his start in the arts, his love for Phantom Of the Opera (he despises it), and more!

“I believe the world is a better place if there is more theatre in it. There is only more theatre in it if there are more people making it. So, I do everything I can to help inspire, educate people to make more theatre. Does that mean I can produce every show? Unfortunately not.”  What's in this episode? Get a sneek peak into the brand new musical The Griswold's Family Vacation! What exactly is producing? How do you pick a city to do an out of town tryout?  How does the industry treat multi-hyphenates? How are multi-hyphenates like small businesses? How does Ken commit to being an accessible producer? How Hal Prince inspired Ken by saying one simple thing.  What is successful producing?  Joy the Musical! “In the business world, if you invent a product – you are the creator of that thing. You are an artist. You just designed the thing – you made it out of nothing. And then you have to raise the money for it. So, you're producing it yourself. All those people that go on Shark Tank, they are raising the money, they are doing the things. No one says, “Ugh, how dare you!” No, that's what they do. That's what Sara Blakely had to do for Spanx, that's what Mark Zuckerberg had to do for Facebook – all of it. They create something and then they raise it – but in our industry people roll their eyes.” Ken Davenport (Producer) is a two-time Tony Award-winning Broadway producer whose credits include A Beautiful Noise, Once On This Island (Tony Award), The Play that Goes Wrong, Groundhog Day (Tony nomination), Deaf West Theatre's Spring Awakening (Tony nomination), It's Only a Play starring Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick, Macbeth starring Alan Cumming, Godspell, Kinky Boots (Tony Award), The Visit (Tony nomination) as well the Off-Broadway productions of Altar Boyz, The Awesome 80s Prom and many more. Davenport's productions have been produced internationally in over 25 countries around the world. He was the Executive Producer for North America for Andrew Lloyd Webber's Really Useful Group and is the Theatrical Consultant for Primary Wave Music Publishing. His blog has been featured in every major publication around the world, from the New York Times to Vanity Fair. He conceived the best-selling boardgame Be A Broadway Star (available on Amazon) and he is an avid golfer. Ken is a Massachusetts native, raised in Sturbridge, MA, who grew up going to shows at the Colonial Theatre. He dedicates his career to his late father, Dr. Kenny Dipchand Hasija, an Indian immigrant who always dreamed about going into the theater but encouraged his son to do so instead. Other productions in development include Harmony by Barry Manilow and Bruce Sussman, The Griswolds' Broadway Vacation, Joy and The Ten. www.kendavenport.com Instagram: @kendavenportbway Learn more about your ad choices.
