Welcome back. Our guest today is Danish tattoo artist Michelle Vestergård, whose story touches on something we can all relate to: the search for authenticity. We talk about her unique entry into the tattoo world at 14, but the core of our conversation is about the deeper-level challenges and values that define a career. We get into the search for true mentorship, the importance of maintaining your integrity on social media, and the courage it takes to be vulnerable. Michelle shares a powerful story of navigating depression and how that experience led her to completely transform her studio into a 'safe space' for others. We also discuss the incredible fundraising tradition she and her daughter started, and what it truly felt like to bring home the ‘Best of Show' at the prestigious ‘Mondial du Tatouage' in Paris. This week on Ojai Talk of the Town, I sit down with Brian and Lisa Berman, two longtime Ojai residents whose life together has been devoted to peace, reconciliation, and healing.Their journey began in Germany at a Holocaust memorial event: Brian, a sculptor who lost family to the Holocaust, and Lisa, a German citizen searching for ways to understand and repair her nation's history, met in that powerful moment of remembrance. From there, their partnership became a shared mission. As co-founders of Awakening Peace, the Bermans have spent decades fostering dialogue, compassion, and creative solutions to conflict. In recent years, their work took them to Poland, where they lived during the height of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, supporting refugees and promoting peace initiatives in a country on the edge of war. They've also carried their message to global conferences and workshops — from Hiroshima to international peace councils — building bridges where division has sown pain.In this episode, Brian shares how his sculpture embodies resilience and remembrance, while Lisa talks about her work as a naturopathic healer and counselor, helping individuals and communities find inner resources for peace. Together, their story is a reminder that healing history and shaping a more compassionate future are possible when art, spirit, and activism unite. We did not talk about the Wannsee Conference, Rommel and Montgomery in Northern Africa, or the Great Swift-Kelce Convergence. Check out https://awakeningpeace.org to keep up-to-date with the Bermans. It's a deep and inspiring conversation - a perfect antidote for the low simmer of nihilism and pessimism so prevalent today.

In this episode Mau Díaz sits down with Jessie Zapo—ultrarunner, art therapist, multidisciplinary artist, and community builder. Known for blending movement, expression, and healing, Jessie has carved out a unique path where running, art, and care for others converge. Her work is rooted in the belief that the body is not only a vehicle for endurance, but also a medium for emotional and creative release. Mau and Jessie begin by tracing her early journey as a runner—how it started, what kept her coming back, and how it evolved into something much deeper than physical training. Jessie shares how running has helped her process her own inner landscape, while simultaneously strengthening the communities she's been part of. For her, running is both a solitary and collective act—an anchor in difficult times and a bridge to meaningful connection with others. The conversation then moves into the rich intersection of running, art, and healing. Jessie opens up about her work as an art therapist and how movement fuels her creative practice. She explores the idea of running as ritual, as a canvas, and as a tool for transformation—not only for herself but for those she supports in her community. This episode is a powerful reflection on how running can go beyond the physical to become a pathway to wholeness, creativity, and care. Follow Jessie: @jessiezapo
Katherine Revoir integrates healing modalities like Non-violent Communication, attachment theory, interpersonal neuroscience, and depth empathy to promote emotional healing and creativity. As a constellation facilitator, she helps individuals uncover how family patterns shape their behavior and emotional lives. Katherine highlights relational neuroscience, emphasizing our innate need for connection and how embodiment and somatic awareness enable artists to overcome creative blocks and access deeper artistic expression. Katherine's own experiences during challenging life events, including business struggles and her mother's passing, guided her toward teaching from deep intuition. She stresses the importance of trusting one's inner voice, viewing intuition as a guide toward personal growth and creative authenticity. Inspired by Bert Hellinger's constellation work, her approach fosters emotional resilience and deeper self-understanding, emphasizing our interconnectedness with others. Social neuroscience, according to Katherine, underscores that humans are wired to connect with other brains, emphasizing the importance of relationships in our psychological and emotional health. She explains that all our behaviors, including people-pleasing patterns, originate from early interactions, particularly the mother-child bond. Katherine introduces the concept of "alarmed aloneness," highlighting the importance of compassionately reconnecting with younger, unresolved parts of ourselves. She describes how companioning these memories helps relocate emotional trauma from the amygdala, where they remain stuck, to the hippocampus, allowing them to be safely processed and filed away. Katherine stresses that emotions are life-giving and should be felt rather than blocked. For more information, visit Katherine's website richerliving.org, where you can schedule personal counseling sessions or participate in her Happy Brain Groups—8-week programs held via Zoom—and Constellation Groups.

Welcome back to the Ten Thousand Heroes Show. I'm Ankur Shah Delight and this is a podcast about purpose. My purpose, your purpose, our guests' purpose. We're all somewhere along the journey of purpose. Some of us are farther along in terms of knowing our purpose or living it. Some of us are more aware of it than others. But purpose, I contend, is fundamentally unescapable. What I'd like to do through these interviews is demystify purpose, make it more accessible. So there's less of a burden a heaviness about living up to our potential. And more of a playfulness. My guest today is Edie Pjipers. I met Edie 9 years ago in my mom's backyard. I was organizing a cob building workshop and Edie signed up at last minute, and flew all the way across the country from New York. I had no idea that first day what an incredibly joyful soul Edie was, or what an amazing artist. But it didn't take long for me to figure it out. And it won't take long for you either, I'm guessing. The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines "feminism" as the belief that men and women should have equal rights and opportunities. What's controversial about this concept? For many Black women, the concept of feminism is complex. Is it our place to demand the stage, or better yet, build our own?define&empower founder, Amanda Bennett joins us on the new SheConfidential podcast episode to explore these questions and others related to Black feminism. Amanda is a Black feminist educator, consultant, poet, and PhD candidate in Literature at Duke University. EXPLICIT: The 9th Annual Feminine Weapon Day benefit took place at a mystical home in downtown Los Angeles. Since 2014, people have been gathering on January 30th to honor the power of femininity and co-creation, in benefit of children who are in need of care. Limited to just 50 people, the sold-out event was a one-night-only interactive theater, “The Space Between Stories.” The raved-about evening began with the group watching the sunset on a rooftop overlooking the city while two World Cup Winning fencers spared to music playing from a rare instrument called, the Ambox. If that wasn't enough to inspire chatter, magician Chad Nelson made his rounds for an extra later of wow. At dusk, participants were guided through a mysterious silver door and into a whimsical world where ceremony and art came to life. Already connected through shared experience, people further bonded over heartfelt performances, a one-of-a-kind auction, and delicious food by Top Vegan Chef, Nicole Derseweh. No nobody objected to the event being booze-free. What touched every heart was a fireside chat with Christina and the executive director of She Ready Foundation, Dr. Thyonne Gordon. The group learned about issues with the foster care system, and how they can help ease the pain so many children experience on a daily basis. Proceeds from Feminine Weapon Day benefit at-risk youth and children in underserved communities to receive Art & Healing programs, like the ones WeDeepen presents for grownups, adjusted for kids. At the time of this recording, the 9th Annual event raised $8K for the She Ready Foundation from ticket sales, donations, and the auction. In total and through the years, Feminine Weapon Day has raised over $73,000. In this podcast WeDeepen guide, Amber J and Christina recap Feminine Weapon Day. After they recap, Amber J reflects on the time that she contracted a "Shibari Shaman" to live with her for a month. It's an experience she said offered her healing, understanding, and preparation for meeting her King. While listening notice the feelings and thoughts that arise. If inspired, email feedback to team@wedeepen.com. We'd love to hear if and how you resonate or not.

Art, to many, is an avenue to express emotions and a form of healing. Today we get to chat with Sandra Lett, who has used art as a way to positively impact her life and keep her sane through many years of trial. Sandra has expanded her reach and has made it a mission of her own to encourage giving back through art — and we can't wait to dive in and explore how she is doing that! As the granddaughter of a fabulous oil painter, art chose me by divine creation. She has been self-taught for over 20 years. Either with the gentle stroke of a paintbrush, a beautiful puddle of paint, inks, or the glorious depth of resin; the creation of beauty in art can be extremely therapeutic and inspirational for all! Sandra embraces a passion for color, love, and positive energy through her artwork. The colors and beauty of nature speak a deep and uplifting language. She enjoys multiple styles of art, be it realism, whimsy, or the pure freedom of an abstract or beautiful resin art piece. She loves being an artist; and loves pouring her heart & soul into others. Art truly has the power to heal and touch us in a life-giving way. Inspiring topics we covered today: Sandra introduces herself and shares how art has impacted her life and healed her. (3:09) Kicking imposter syndrome to the curb. (10:30) How Sandra used Facebook to complement her YouTube channel. (11:05) Sandra shares how Counter Culture DIY aligns with her values as an artist. (13:28) Using an auction to pay it forward. (16:30) How social media harnesses the abundance mindset. (23:06) Sandra shares what humble and kind means to her and her art. (31:07) Being able to chat with Sandra was so amazing! No part of our business compares to the relationships we have built, and Sandra is a perfect example of an artist who aligns with our mission to make the world a more positive place through art. In this episode Joan candidly speaks about her work creating platforms, strategies and collaborations utilizing the power of art for authentic community building. Joan Vorderbruggen is a nationally recognized leader in the field of public art and creative placemaking. She is a “one-woman powerhouse” behind the award-winning artists and storefront projects in downtown Minneapolis. Podcast Quotes “And I think can be difficult for me is that I feel a very deep sense of accountability to the community. And I.... believe that what I'm able to do, I need to do.” “Not everybody understands the power of arts and its role in a comprehensive public safety strategy. So let's talk about it. You know, here's... the data. And soon our placemaking work was being supported by violence prevention funds at the city level. So it was literally seen as a part of a comprehensive public safety strategy that was preventing violence.” “...Yes, I am an artist and I utilize the built environment as my canvas with the resources and the creativity and the skills and abilities of the people who are there...” Benincasa to Vorderbruggen: “... healers are sometimes described as those who seek to heal the body and the soul. And you spent 17 years as a nurse and you did one-on-one patient care. But as an arts administrator, you work with many patients; you give collaborative multi-layered care to place, space, people and buildings- resuscitating the physical heart of a community, and you do it with art! So what you do, packaged in who you are, is so needed, and maybe that's why they call you Joan of Art.” Joan Vorderbruggen YouTube, Videos and Articles YouTube: Joan Vorderbruggen Activates Vacant Spaces YouTube: The Minneapolis Good Chair Project TPT: Minnesota Original/ Joan Vorderbruggen and Made Here Project For Public Spaces ROOM FOR EVERYONE: A new public art administrator's path to reaching underrepresented artists. by Joan Vorderbruggen Planning For The Future of the Hennepin Theatre District Joan Vorderbruggen: reawakening empty storefronts to their community potential servicespace.org: Powerful Lessons of Urban Placemaking, Art + Healing: A Circle with Joan Vorderbruggen https://www.startribune.com/joan-the-connector-muse-makes-storefronts-bloom/266267241/ http://www.dailygood.org/more.php?n=8992 Joan Vorderbruggen is the one-woman powerhouse behind Minneapolis's Made Here Joan Vorderbruggen on Unlikely Collaborations It's the People 2021 CALL FOR ART: MADE HERE Art program activates vacant storefront windows, helps lease space Joan of Art Tom Hoch, President/CEO of Hennepin Theatre Trust, to Step Down in 2017 An Exhibition celebrating Artists in Storefronts Hope For Minneapolis #LANSINGPLACEMAKERS: JOAN VORDERBRUGGEN https://kstp.com/minnesota-news/art-connects-us-billboards-show-appreciation-inspiration-for-others-metro-twin-cities/5702928/ Hennepin Theatre Trust on Twitter: “Congrats To Joan Vorderbruggen” Organizations Mentioned 5 to 10 on Hennepin Salvation Army Harbor Light Center YouthLink Mad Dads of Minneapolis Place Lab University of Chicago: Ethical Redevelopment Hennepin Theatre Trust Follow me on Instagram!
For episode #66 we are joined by Jake Kobrin. Jake is a visionary artist and tattooist he is also the founder and designer of a jewelry and fashion brand called Medicine Dragon Designs, and is a DJ and musician, as well as a published writer, speaker, and podcaster. Jake's work is psychedelic, unusual, dark, beautiful, and elegant. His work seeks to illuminate experiences which Jake has had that are outside of the realm of normal waking consciousness, moving into numinous and visionary realms with natural ease. He considers himself an "interdimensional midwife and conduit" believing that the role of the artist is to be able to move outside of themselves and to act as a conduit for higher consciousness to move through them. In this way he says, "I do not claim authorship for any of the works of art I have painted. I am a channel for Great Spirit to create through me." He is one of the few visionary artists with a formal classical art education, having studied classical realist drawing and painting in Florence, Italy at the Angel Academy of Art. Besides painting and tattooing, he is also the founder and designer of a jewelry and fashion brand called Medicine Dragon Designs, and is a DJ and musician, as well as a published writer, speaker, and podcaster. New PODCAST ALERT! Art and mental health with @jweenyg This week, we interviewed Jweeny on @thoughtbubblewithj podcast and it was incredible. It's probably one of those EPs which really pulled my heartstrings We covered: Art as a creative way towards healing Navigating through grief Creating a community to acknowledge the stigma and help those who may be going through a difficult time. Art Therapy and Art Healing are relatively new to Nina Heaton. Wonderfully gifted, she shares her recent realization that her art is a source of healing and transformation for her clients - moving them from where they are (or don’t want to be) and transporting them to where they need to be - so they can continue to evolve and lead more successful and vibrant lives. In essence, her paintings are a powerful and yet gentle way to encourage others to step into their truth.
