There's nothing like the feeling of an unexpected snow day! And for singer/songwriter Meaghan Smith, it was the inspiration for her song It Snowed. That will be one of the festive tunes you'll hear as part of The Holiday Show over three days at The Stage at St. Andrew's (6036 Coburg Road) in Halifax starting December 1st. Smith has written over 100 songs that have been used for film and television (those include: Jimmy Fallon, American Idol, So You Think You Can Dance, 60 Minutes, The Friends Reunion and more. This upcoming event is a festive fundraiser for Feed NS. This is a conversation about her unique approach to her craft and the career she's built for herself in a rather unconventional way. And if you've never heard of an omnichord, you're not the only one.

Something special is a foot…In this episode of the podcast I catch up with looooong time friend (and all ‘round good guy) Jeff Somers about his brand new book, Avery And The Special Shoe. It's a very specific story he wrote for his daughter, which is why it has universal appeal. We talk about the challenges his daughter faces, we talk about writing, and we talk about publishing (oh, and about Meaghan Smith's beautiful illustrations). If you'd like to pre-order a copy of the book, swing by averyandthespecialshoe.com today! On the back end of the convo, I unload on / pick the brain of Jeff regarding the first public release from the Worship Leader Research team I'm a part of. Before I get into some details about my wonderful guest for this episode, I want to share more about what I said right at the top of the show since it’s pretty important. As of last week, I have put to rest the old name for this podcast, the Mo’ Money Podcast, and have officially changed the show’s name to the More Money Podcast. As I explained in the intro for this episode, it was very much time for this change and I feel really good about it. As you know, especially from , I am an ally of BIPOC and am a supporter of Black Lives Matter. I’ve also been putting more effort to have a more diverse guest list for the show to ensure there are more voices being heard that need to be. I want to be part of the solution, not the problem. Still, I had never really stopped to think that my podcast name may actually be part of the problem and may come off as offensive to some people until recently. To give you some background, when I first started my blog in 2011, I called it Mo' Money Mo' Houses. I was 24 when my old roommate and I came up with the name, and I thought it was a funny play on words with my last name and the song Mo' Money Mo' Problems. A few years later, I launched this podcast under the same name. When I rebranded from Mo' Money Mo' Houses to just my personal name (Jessica Moorhouse), I dropped the Mo' Houses from my podcast name so it became simply Mo' Money. Throughout the years, I've toyed with the idea of updating the name to something that had more relevance to my brand, but I kept putting it off. Until I recently stumbled upon a review on my podcast that made take action immediately. The review is still on Apple Podcasts, so I'm sure you'll be able to find it easily. In essence, they were calling me out for appropriating language from the Black community. That was never my intention and I felt terrible that that had never crossed my mind. So I did a quick poll on Instagram to see how some of my listeners felt. Although the majority didn't feel the same way, some people did. I never want to offend anyone, and I especially don't want anyone to misunderstand my values or support for the Black community. So, I changed the name. Luckily it was an easy change to the More Money Podcast, but it did remind me that I still have work to do in order to become a better ally. So thanks to everyone for supporting this name change, and supporting me! And thanks again for continuing to listen to the show. Ok, now onto the special guest for this episode, . She is a money mindset and life coach for women who I’ve been following on Instagram for a little while now. She is also the host of the popular Money Mindful podcast and book club. I find her so inspiring and her thoughts on money and mindfulness so interesting, I had to have her on the show so we could dive deeper. This is one of those episodes that's going to make you pause and think (what good timing since I've been doing a lot of that lately!), and reconsider your actions, habits, and mindset around money. Meaghan definitely got me thinking of some of the money mindset issues I still battle every day. I think I've mentioned on the show that naturally I have a scarcity mindset because of my background growing up. But I try to work through that because I find having an abundance mindset so much more liberating. I hope you enjoy this episode as much as I did and make sure to follow Meaghan on Instagram and check out her podcast that dives even deeper into this topic! What do we all share? Our emotions. While the way we experience them is unique, the feelings themselves are what connect us. With something so powerful, we need to be aware of how we use them and, while protecting ourselves, we can also use the gift of emotions to create empathy. And that, friends, is how we can help heal the world. So let's take care of our emotions and talk about them.

One man is trying to repeal Obamacare. The other is trying to save it. As Congress returns and the health reform battle begins, this week's PULSE CHECK features two key figures on opposite sides of the Affordable Care Act. First, Rep. Phil Roe joins POLITICO's Dan Diamond (starts at the 1:40 mark) to explain his new ACA replacement proposal, which is backed by the Republican Study Committee, why he thinks Obamacare is in a "death spiral," and what he knows as a doctor who spent decades treating patients in rural Tennessee. After the break, Leslie Dach — a former top HHS official and the head of Protect Our Care, a new coalition of advocacy groups — talks about the plan to defend Obamacare (starts at the 24:30 mark), how they're judging success, and why he thinks Republicans are in "disarray." He's joined by Meaghan Smith, a former HHS official now at SKDknickerbocker. We’d appreciate your help: Please share PULSE CHECK and rate us on your favorite podcast app! Tonight we’re throwing the doors open wide and hosting our first Open House event where listeners are invited to come and tour our new facilities. T-Bar even showed up in honour of the occasion. Sometimes, a party ends a little early, and this is one of those, as we’re off to the West End to see Del Barber & Meaghan Smith. Meaghan stopped by the station this afternoon and had a chat with music director Michael Elves and played some songs live. We’ve got that special session for you when we head off. For party tunes, we’ve got some Steel Belted classics, new music, and previews of some upcoming shows.

Usually I come down to UMFM on Sunday afternoons and sit alone behind closed doors. That works fine, but today it’s party time, as we’re kicking off UMFM’s Open House week, where we throw the doors open wide to show off our fancy new studios. We celebrated with friends, family, treats, prizes, and special guests Ron from Lockport and Del Barber!
