Born to the trade right here in Manhattan, April of 1932, Tony Perkins was the son of theatrical actor Osgood (most notably appearing alongside Boris Karloff, George Raft and Paul Muni in Scarface the very same year.) Raised almost entirely by his mother and a French nanny, he self-avowedly "became abnormally attached to" his mother, developing "an Oedipal Complex in a pronounced form", which became further complicated by misplaced guilt when his father died backstage only 5 years later. Continually conflicted in his orientation, he married photographer "Berry" Berenson (sister of Marisa), with whom he bore two children...despite being involved with any number of men since his teens.   With his quirky, “sensitive” demeanor and strong hints of a darker undertone to his persona, he was, perhaps unusually, often cast as an off kilter romantic lead, the sort of oddball outsider character later essayed by the likes of Christian Slater or Crispin Glover.  But it was his shockingly convincing portrait of Norman Bates for the great subversive film technician Alfred Hitchcock that both defined and, for a large part of his career thereafter, typecast him domestically for a series of darker, more villainous if not psychotic roles thereafter. Having starred with the likes of Brigitte Bardot, Sophia Loren, Audrey Hepburn, Fred Astaire, Orson Welles, Sean Connery, Roger Moore and Paul Newman, he moved from domestic churn ‘em out studio fare to a far more interesting sideline in the French cinema of the 60's and early 70's.   Briefly settling into the more auteurist work of 70's British and American film, he took a deep dive into cult cinema throughout the 80s, working for folks like Ken Russell and bringing his Bates character back for a better than average slasher series based on the 1960 original. Cowriting the highly subtextual The Last of Sheila with then-partner and musical theater impresario, he further tried his hand at directing, first in two stage productions, and later a pair of films (one of which he starred in.) He even had a short lived sideline in schmaltz, releasing four albums in the late ‘50s and early ‘60s, which showed him (perhaps surprisingly) possessed of a pleasant, syrupy tone very much along the lines of Jack Jones. Join us as we discuss one of the great character actors of our time, the multilayered Tony Perkins, only here on Weird Scenes Inside the Goldmine! Marissa chats with writing duo Amanda Foody and Christine Lynn Herman about their young adult fantasy - ALL OF US VILLAINS - as well as using archetypes to guide your decisions when building a large cast of characters, then adding layers through personality details; developing a complex magic system and determining when and how to break your own magic rules; being intentional with your setting details and descriptions in order to evoke a certain mood; and lots of insight into the co-writing process, from things to consider when entering into a writing partnership (think: communication, trust, and a shared vision for the project), as well as some potential challenges (like technology hiccups and - gulp! - having to share your unpolished work with someone else).Books discussed in this episode can be purchased from your local independent bookstore or buy them online from the Happy Writer bookshop.org store (that benefits indie bookstores) at  https://bookshop.org/shop/marissameyer

Today, I have the pleasure of interviewing Tracy Dobmeier and Wendy Katzman. Tracy Dobmeier and Wendy Katzman have been great friends for over 20 years and are now co-authors. Their friendship has sustained them through the ups and downs of raising kids, juggling careers, and creating new family traditions. Girls with Bright Futures, their debut novel, out now, is a dark, suspenseful journey into the cutthroat world of college admissions. Between the two of them, they have undergraduate degrees from Princeton University and the University of Michigan, a law degree from UC Berkeley, careers in marketing, non-profit leadership, and biotechnology law, two husbands, and four kids (three of whom have survived the college admissions process without a single parent landing in jail).    In this episode Tracy, Wendy, and I discuss: How focusing on mother-daughter relationships escalated the tension. What they learned from keeping their cowriting process intentionally simple. Why they made their alpha protagonist a bit of an outsider.   Plus, their #1 tip for writers. TB is clogged up and has no idea if it’s a cold (she’s prone to them) or the virus, but she requested to record early to ensure this episode gets out. She’s also launched A Woman Complete, the last book in the Lizzie series. And, she put together a Lizzie fan quiz including questions to all the books leading up to the final. There are prizes involved, the grand one being a $100 Amazon gift card. Clare admits social distancing isn’t all that new for her. She’s doing her best to keep to her 2020 schedule. Even reconciling her February accounts. Exciting news for those who purchase books on Ylva’s platform. Many of Clare’s books are now available there. It seems Clare purchased her printer just in time, because the libraries in her area have closed, and she’ll need to print a draft of the cowrite soon. Now, she just needs to figure out how to hook it up. What could possibly go wrong? The duo moves on to the topic: Cowriting, including how they set it up and how it’s going. They started to discuss the particulars of the project months ago, but they knew TB would be in the UK in March and held off with some of the details until after their research trip to Whitstable, where the cowrite is set. They’re each writing a chapter a day, and both agree it’s exciting to watch the story unfold. It’s the first time they’ve shared their first draft with the other, which brings up a valuable point. It’s important to know your cowriter well before beginning because there needs to be a level of trust due to the vulnerability and level of exposure. Even with everything going on, they still started the project on time and, so far (knock on wood), are on track to meet their first editing deadline. “Allow time for a discovery period at the beginning of a co-write”   You rarely see a song these days with just one writer. Especially in Christian music and the world of corporate worship. In Episode 72, John goes in depth into the process of co-writing, what it looks like in Nashville, and how you can use it to write better songs.   “Don’t go into a writing room empty-handed. Walk in with at least 6-10 ideas of what you hope to write”   There are several things that are important to know before going into a writing room with others. You have to realize that, just like relationships, there are going to be writers that you just “click” with, and others that you don’t. It’s more of a process of becoming self-aware to realize what type of writer you are, and the group dynamics of the co-write.   “Take turns sharing ideas and starting on the one that feels most agreeable”   If you’ve been struggling to write songs on your own, we strongly urge you to start co-writing. Community is a part of our DNA here at NCS and we know that in order to write better songs, we need each other for feedback and collaboration. This week, Chris shares the incredible story of how four friends (Marv Green, Bill Luther, Aimee Mayo and himself) turned just making some records they loved, into a whole lot of hit songs. From that record came hits like "Let's Make Love" (Tim and Faith), "There Will Come A Day" (Faith Hill), "Smilin'" (Tim McGraw) and more. Listen on to hear about their cowriting pet peeves, what their kids think of their songs, and the magic of finding your people in this town. https://americansongwriter.com/american-songwriter-podcast-network/

We're changing things up this week; instead of your regularly scheduled songwriter interview, I sat down with label owner, music blogger and band manager Zack Zarrillo to chat about our favorite songs of 2014 so far -- along with some hot-button issues. We delve into the practice of cowriting, whether bands should be scorned for the practice and why the perception of the practice differs for different musical genres. We close things out with a discussion on bands whose lyrics are penned by someone other than the lead vocalist.
