The Reverend Osagyefo Sekou draws from a deep well of American music on his new album, called In Times Like These. Blues and gospel traditions, but specifically also "North Mississippi Hill Country Music, Arkansas Delta Blues, 1960s Rock and Roll, Memphis Soul, Chuck Berry St Louis vibes, and Pentecostal steel guitar." Now if you're thinking that those are musical holdovers from another time, the activist, author, documentary filmmaker and theologian Reverend Sekou wants you to know that that music has become powerful and relevant again, in times like these. The album features Luther and Cody Dickinson of the North Mississippi All-Stars, and Rev Sekou toured with them back in 2017. He and The Sealbreakers play some of the tunes, in-studio. Musical ghosts haunt the Memphis band Lucero. The late Warren Zevon is evoked in one song, and the spirit of the late Alex Chilton's groundbreaking Memphis group Big Star can be felt throughout the record. (Their 2015 album title, All A Man Should Do, is a line from a Big Star song.) Songwriter Ben Nichols uses a stirring blend of classic rock and Memphis soul, but maintains a distinctive voice. Lucero plays songs from All A Man Should Do, in-studio. (From the Archives, 2015.)

This week we'll hear from one of the architects of Memphis soul. While many of the Stax Records originators are gone, William Bell is still here. And the soulful, horn-driven Stax music and the Memphis sound are still here, too. Now Bell, 81 and an Atlanta resident, is being honored as a creator of the soul that put Memphis in the pantheon of American music. Bell is one of nine artists and craftspeople who have been named as National Heritage Fellows, recipients of the nation's highest honor in the folk and traditional arts. The AJC's Bo Emerson recently spoke with the R&B legend and, on this week's podcast, we'll bring you that conversation.
Patrick Adams is an Artist/Songwriter/Producer whose wide range of music will take you on a journey through several different styles and sounds. Ranging from the smooth R&B/Soul sound of "Thinking Bout You" to the Memphis/Soul sound of "Head 2 The Sky" to the Funk of "Thankful" and the Gospel sound of "My Father My Lord", Patrick Adams, known to many as "P" will take you on a musical journey!
Things are heavy out there and Eric needed to talk to someone connected to a higher consciousness musically, spiritually, and civically. Noted activist, theologian, author, documentary filmmaker, and musician, Reverend Osagyefo Sekou was born in St. Louis, Missouri and raised in the rural Arkansas Delta. Rev. Sekou's music is an unique combination of Arkansas Delta Blues, Memphis Soul 1970s funk, and Gospel. His most recent record, When We Fight We Win - Live in Memphis was released in March 2019. He is featured in Orlando de Guzman’s 2015 documentary film Ferguson: A Report from Occupied Territory and also spent 6 weeks on the ground in Charlottesville, VA training clergy in response to the Unite the Right rally. Night Owls and the Reverend go deep on the Gospel of Mark, the healing aspects of music, Jesus Christ as a revolutionary figure, social media, writing songs on stage, the 2020 presidential candidates, and his history and perspective in activism. George Bowman is a famed singer in his home state of Arizona where he is a Blues Hall of Fame inductee and connected to his cities long legacy of blues and soul going back to the days of Dyke & the Blazers. After moving to Arizona from Mississippi, George befriended famed funk icon Dyke Christian and became hooked on the groove. Shortly after he formed a band, Memphis Soul and began to cut singles and opening for Charles Brown and Taj Mahal. George has recorded several full-length studio albums including ‘Badd Boy’ which featured renowned guitarist Lucius Parr. Recently George collaborated with Bob Corritore on a single for the upcoming Delta Groove Records release, ‘Don’t Let the Devil Ride.’
John Gary Williams was a member of the Mad Lads, who were signed to Stax Records in the early Sixties, while he was still in high school. They had several R&B hits, including "I Don't Have to Shop Around," and "I Want Someone."Williams decided to go solo in the early Seventies, recording a fantastic debut, self-titled album in 1973. Full of lush strings, funky rhythms, and Williams' falsetto overtop, it should've been a smash hit. Yet, distribution problems kept his album from getting into key markets like Detroit and Chicago. Now, over 40 years later, his album is finally getting a proper release, as part of Stax Records' 60th anniversary celebration. We chat with Williams about his early days in the Mad Lads, who were much closer to New York Doo Wop, than Memphis Soul. Plus, he talks about an upcoming movie that's in production about his life. And, he takes us track by track through the reissue of his debut

Who said a french band can't play Funk ?!
Indian Ocean is a career defining fusion of her own honey sweet vocals, tangy diction and Memphis Soul on this second solo album by the former leader of The Be Good Tanyas.
While other styles offer opportunities to surrender to the beat, in Memphis soul that's all that matters. In this two-part lesson, we'll dissect some classic soul grooves to see what makes them tick, and then try to grab some of that cosmic woo-woo for ourselves. This lesson includes Power Tab and is featured on the following CD compilations: BLUES U.
