The event is best known for considerable violence, including the death of Meredith Hunter and three accidental deaths: two caused by a hit-and-run car accident and one by drowning in an irrigation canal. Four births were reported during the event.[2] Scores were injured, numerous cars were stolen and then abandoned, and there was extensive property damage.[3][4]The concert featured, in order of appearance: Santana, Jefferson Airplane, The Flying Burrito Brothers, and Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, with the Rolling Stones taking the stage as the final act.[5] The Grateful Dead were also scheduled to perform, but declined to play shortly before their scheduled appearance due to the increasing violence at the venue.[6] "That's the way things went at Altamont—so badly that the Grateful Dead, prime organizers and movers of the festival, didn't even get to play," staff at Rolling Stone magazine wrote in a detailed narrative on the event,[5] terming it in an additional follow-up piece "rock and roll's all-time worst day, December 6th, a day when everything went perfectly wrong."[7]Approximately 300,000 people attended the concert, and some anticipated that it would be a "Woodstock West."[8] Filmmakers Albert and David Maysles shot footage of the event and incorporated it into a documentary film titled Gimme Shelter (1970).Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-opperman-report--1198501/support.

In this breathtaking cultural history filled with exclusive, never-before-revealed details, celebrated rock journalist Joel Selvin tells the definitive story of the Rolling Stones' infamous Altamont concert, the disastrous historic event that marked the end of the idealistic 1960s.In the annals of rock history, the Altamont Speedway Free Festival on December 6, 1969, has long been seen as the distorted twin of Woodstock—the day that shattered the Sixties' promise of peace and love when a concertgoer was killed by a member of the Hells Angels, the notorious biker club acting as security. While most people know of the events from the film Gimme Shelter, the whole story has remained buried in varied accounts, rumor, and myth—until now.Altamont explores rock's darkest day, a fiasco that began well before the climactic death of Meredith Hunter and continued beyond that infamous December night. Joel Selvin probes every aspect of the show—from the Stones' hastily planned tour preceding the concert to the bad acid that swept through the audience to other deaths that also occurred that evening—to capture the full scope of the tragedy and its aftermath. He also provides an in-depth look at the Grateful Dead's role in the events leading to Altamont, examining the band's behind-the-scenes presence in both arranging the show and hiring the Hells Angels as security. The product of twenty years of exhaustive research and dozens of interviews with many key players, including medical staff, Hells Angels members, the stage crew, and the musicians who were there, and featuring sixteen pages of color photos, Altamont is the ultimate account of the final event in rock's formative and most turbulent decade.

The Rolling Stones touch down in San Francisco to play their first gig in the Bay Area since their disastrous concert at the Altamont Speedway three years earlier — when they'd inadvertently provided the soundtrack to a murder. Their arrival forces them to revisit that awful day when members of the Hells Angels, supposedly acting as security, stab 18-year-old Meredith Hunter to death in the middle of the band's set. The Stones hope these new gigs will serve as an apology to the hippest music city in America, but fear that the motorcycle gang will make good on their threats to assassinate Mick Jagger as revenge for Altamont's legal fallout.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Journalist and novelist Dawnie Walton joins co-hosts Whitney Terrell and V.V. Ganeshananthan to talk about U.S. concert culture. Why are live concerts so popular this summer and why have they so often become violent? Walton discusses how recent examples of fan violence speak to racism and sexism in American culture, as well as the role social media plays in fandom. Finally, she reads from her 2021 novel, The Final Revival of Opal & Nev, which focuses on the fictional partnership between a Black American woman, singer Opal Jewel, and a white British man, guitarist Neville Charles, and discusses her story's connection to the infamous Altamont Free Concert in 1969. The Rolling Stones topped the bill at Altamont Speedway in Livermore, California on 6th December, 1969 - a free festival intended to rival the recent Woodstock in New York. But it was an organisational shambles, and turned deadly when an audience member was murdered.  Notorious gang Hell's Angels had been hired (allegedly in return for free beer) to provide ‘security' for the event. They sat on a tiny stage, badly positioned in the pit of the racetrack, and attacked the crowds with billiard cues. Jefferson Airplane got pummeled. Mick Jagger was punched in the face. In this episode, Arion, Rebecca and Olly explain how the movie rights for Gimme Shelter lay behind the ill-judged decision to relocate the festival with just two days' notice; evaluate the Stones' limited commentary on the disarray, and 18 year old Meredith Hunter's death; and consider whether this regrettable event really did represent ‘the end of the 60s'... A objevili jsme řadu takových, u kterých to jednou recenzí neskončilo. What a Creep: Not Fade Away Podcast Bonus Ep  “Altamont/The Rolling Stones” The Not Fade Away podcast is back and today's subject--the Altamont concert that took place on December 6, 1969. It was supposed to be a showcase by the Rolling Stones to demonstrate their ability to draw an even bigger crowd than the Woodstock festival which took place in August of that year. That concert was billed as “three days of peace & music” and managed to rise above their circumstances of overcrowding, rain and brown acid to become a legendary event that 50 years later serves as an example of how hippies can work peacefully with “the man” to create beauty out chaos. Instead, Altamont is rightly or wrongly known as one of the key events that ended 60s idealism. At the end of the day, 300,000 showed up at a tiny speedway far outside the city of San Francisco to find a barely visible stage, pissed-off Hell Angels members as authority figures, horrible drugs snuck into drinks that left people incapacitated, very few bathrooms, little emergency care, and four people dead. Among the deceased was an 18-year Meredith Hunter--an African American teen who was proud to bring his pretty, white teenage girlfriend Patti Bredehoft to the show but thought it would be wise to carry a Smith & Weston pistol for protection.   Hunter was beaten and stabbed to death by a group of Hell's Angels who claimed he was aiming to shoot at the stage. All of this was shockingly caught on film as filmmakers Albert & David Maysles were shooting a documentary about the shooting a documentary about the Rolling Stones which would be released in 1970 under the title Gimme Shelter. The concert, which was to feature The Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, Santana, Crosby, Stills Nash & Young, The Flying Burrito Brothers, and the Rolling Stones as headliners were meant to rival the east coast Woodstock celebration. It was also a public relations stunt by the Rolling Stones to offer a free concert when their current tour was billing high ticket prices for the time. It would also serve to have the Grateful Dead play to a home crowd and make up for their rather pathetic showing at Woodstock. (The band themselves admit their portion of the three-day celebration was pretty stinky.) This is the story of how that concert came to be, what went wrong, the lives that were lost and what lessons we can learn from the mess of a show that was a mixture of rock star hubris, greed and youthful ignorance. In the first part, I am going to give you an overlay on what happened that day and include an eyewitness account by my friend Andrea who attended (and was eight months pregnant by the way.) The second part will include interviews with two authors who are experts on Altamont: Saul Austerlitz a Brooklyn-based author wrote “Just a Shot Away: Peace, Love and Tragedy With the Rolling Stones at Altamont” with a keen focus on Meredith Hunter and his tragically short life that was marked by chaos, family mental health issues and racism. Joel Selvin, longtime rock journalist from the San Francisco area who wrote “Altamont: The Rolling Stones, the Hells Angels and the Inside Story of Rock's Darkest Day.” Clips used in this episode: Mick Jagger announces a free concert in San Francisco (from the film Gimme Shelter) Attorney Melvin Belli negotiates to get Altamont Speedway (from the film Gimme Shelter) The Grateful Dead (Jerry Garcia & Phil Lesh) hear about the chaos at Altamont (from the film Gimme Shelter) Jerry Garcia describing why Altamont had violence versus Woodstock (DVD extra from the Grateful Dead documentary Long Strange Trip) Mick Jagger tries to calm the audience down (from the film Gimmie Shelter) Also, subscribe to the show so you won't miss my next episode!   Be sure to follow us on social media. The Banana Boyz dig into the Anti-Woodstock that was the Altamont Free Concert. Considered by some "The Day the Music Died", it was a Free Concert put on by The Rolling Stones in Northern California. Wary of cops, they hired The Hells Angels to do security, and last-minute changes to the venue resulted in unsafe stages, bad acid trips & massive overcrowding. 4 people died, including Meredith Hunter, a young black man, who was stabbed to death by the Hells' Angels. In this breathtaking cultural history filled with exclusive, never-before-revealed details, celebrated rock journalist Joel Selvin tells the definitive story of the Rolling Stones' infamous Altamont concert, the disastrous historic event that marked the end of the idealistic 1960s. In the annals of rock history, the Altamont Speedway Free Festival on December 6, 1969, has long been seen as the distorted twin of Woodstock—the day that shattered the Sixties' promise of peace and love when a concertgoer was killed by a member of the Hells Angels, the notorious biker club acting as security. While most people know of the events from the film Gimme Shelter, the whole story has remained buried in varied accounts, rumor, and myth—until now. Altamont explores rock's darkest day, a fiasco that began well before the climactic death of Meredith Hunter and continued beyond that infamous December night. Please allow us to introduce ourselves....we're a podcast...of wealth (of information and opinions) and taste....maybe.   Episode 62 of See Hear Podcast is ready for your earholes. Tim, Sticky (Fingers) and Maurice delve into the documentary about disaster that was The Rolling Stones' free concert at Altamont Speedway on December 6, 1969. The Stones were finishing up their first American tour in 3 years....hugely successful artistically coming after two of the greatest albums in their back catalogue, Beggars Banquet and Let It Bleed.   The tour infamously ended in tragedy when a San Franciscan chapter of the Hells Angels were hired by the Stones to provide security for the payment of $500 worth of beer. From 2019, this does not look to be world's best business practice....needless to say, things didn't go well. Members of the audience (and Marty Ballin of Jefferson Airplane) were beaten by the Angels, they had contempt for the band they were supposedly guarding, and by day's end, Meredith Hunter, a concert goer was pronounced dead after being stabbed by a member of the Angels.   David and Albert Mayles and Charlotte Zwerin were looking to make a bog standard documentary about the Stones' US tour of 1969....instead, their cameras captured events that many have said kicked the idealism of the 1960s to the curb.   We discuss the way the drama of the film is presented, other films featuring the Rolling Stones as subject matter, the image of the band as opposed to the reality, and whether they learned anything as a result. Who was complicit in Meredith's murder? Be aware some of the subject matter may be a little distressing.   You can download the show by searching for See Hear podcast on iTunes, Spotify or Stitcher or you can download from http://seehear.podbean.com …..or whatever podcast app you favour.   If you dig what we do, could you please rate us at iTunes or even better, spread the word that the show exists on social media or at your next barbecue, gig, or marathon run so more folks can tune in.   Please join our friendly Facebook group at  http://www.facebook.com/groups/seehearpodcast   You can send us emails at seehearpodcast@gmail.com to suggest films you'd like us to discuss, give us your thoughts on what we do or anything else music-film related.

Not Fade Away Episode 8:  “Altamont”   Hey there! Hi There! Ho there! The Not Fade Away podcast is back and I am so excited to talk about today’s subject--the Altamont concert that took place on December 6, 1969. Hunter was beaten and stabbed to death by a group of Hell’s Angels who claimed he was aiming to shoot at the stage. Joel Selvin, longtime rock journalist from the San Francisco area who wrote “Altamont: The Rolling Stones, the Hells Angels and the Inside Story of Rock’s Darkest Day.” Clips used in this episode: Mick Jagger announces a free concert in San Francisco (from the film Gimme Shelter) Attorney Melvin Belli negotiates to get Altamont Speedway (from the film Gimme Shelter) The Grateful Dead (Jerry Garcia & Phil Lesh) hear about the chaos at Altamont (from the film Gimme Shelter) Jerry Garcia describing why Altamont had violence versus Woodstock (DVD extra from the Grateful Dead documentary Long Strange Trip) Mick Jagger tries to calm the audience down (from the film Gimmie Shelter) Also, subscribe to the show so you won’t miss my next episode! In this edition the Rock N Roll Archaeologist digs very deep into the events of the Altamont Music festival held on December 6th, 1969. Our special guest is author Saul Austerlitz whose latest book is “Just a Shot Away: Peace, Love and Tragedy with the Rolling Stones at Altamont”. Saul is a long time music journalist who has had work published in the LA Times, NY Times, Boston Globe, Slate, the Village Voice, The New Republic, the SF Chronicle, Spin, Rolling Stone, and Paste. He is the author of several previous books, including Money for Nothing: A History of the Music Video from the Beatles to the White Stripes. In Just a Shot Away, writer and critic Saul Austerlitz tells the story of “Woodstock West,” where the Rolling Stones hoped to end their 1969 American tour triumphantly with the help of the Grateful Dead, the Jefferson Airplane, and 300,000 fans. Instead the concert featured a harrowing series of disasters, starting with the concert’s haphazard planning. The bad acid kicked in early. The Hells Angels, hired to handle security, began to prey on the concertgoers. And not long after the Rolling Stones went on, an 18-year-old African-American named Meredith Hunter was stabbed by the Angels in front of the stage. The show, and the Woodstock high, were over. Austerlitz shows how Hunter’s death came to symbolize the end of an era while the trial of his accused murderer epitomized the racial tensions that still underlie America. He also finds a silver lining in the concert in how Rolling Stone’s coverage of it helped create a new form of music journalism, while the making of the movie about Altamont, Gimme Shelter, birthed new forms of documentary. Using scores of new interviews with Paul Kantner, Jann Wenner, journalist John Burks, filmmaker Joan Churchill, and many members of the Rolling Stones' inner circle, as well as Meredith Hunter's family, Austerlitz shows that you can’t understand the ‘60s or rock and roll if you don’t come to grips with Altamont. In this episode, a chat with music journalist Joel Selvin, author of “Altamont: The Rolling Stones, the Hells Angels and the Inside Story of Rock’s Darkest Day”. Joel and I are gonna be chatting about the historic free concert thrown by the Rolling Stones at the Altamont Speedway in December 1969. Joel has called this rock ‘n roll’s darkest day, and I’m sure many others would agree. I’m also sure some people are probably like, “Ryan, what the hell does this story have to do with the occult?” And to that I say this: as with anything occult, if you get caught up with the story on the surface, you’ve missed the message completely. To be fair, though, this doesn’t have anything to do with occult study or philosophy, but this story does have an interesting place in the annals of not just rock music, but also American culture. The Altamont concert is not a forgotten moment, by any means, but I think it does merit some attention because of the time in which it took place and how the hippie movement was viewed afterward. Joel is a San Francisco-based music critic and author best known for his weekly column in the San Francisco Chronicle, which ran from 1972 to 2009. In addition to his book on Altamont, Joel has penned several books examining the cross-section of music and culture, including “Summer of Love: The Inside Story of LSD, Rock & Roll, Free Love and High Time in the Wild West”, as well as “Peppermint Twist: The Mob, the Music and the Most Famous Dance Club of the 60s”. He’s also authored or co-authored biographies on some notable musicians, including Rock & Roll Hall of Famers Ricky Nelson and Sammy Hagar. But our focus here is the story surrounding a free concert held at Altamont Speedway in Northern California in December 1969. The Rolling Stones headlined a bill any fan of rock music would loved to have seen, but the day was marred by biker beatdowns, bad drugs and the death of a young black man named Meredith Hunter. Whether you’ve heard the story before or not, I think you’ll learn a little something from this. It’s a fine chat with one of the premier chroniclers of the San Francisco music scene. And if you’re into speculation and conspiracy theory, please do stay tuned for the outro. Enjoy. History Dweebs - A look at True Crime, Murders, Serial Killers and the Darkside of History

The Altamont Speedway Free Festival was a counterculture-era rock concert held on Saturday, December 6, 1969, at the Altamont Speedway in northern-western California. The free concert featured The Rolling Stones, The Grateful Dead, Santna and Jefferson Airplane.  The Hell's Angels were hired to provide security. To the shock of the promoters, more than 300,000 people showed up. There were violent confrontations between The Hell's Angels and the fans leading to the death of 18 year old Meredith Hunter. In his deeply researched book, Altamont: The Rolling Stones, the Hells Angels, and the Inside Story of Rock's Darkest Day, filled with exclusive, never-before-revealed details, celebrated rock journalist Joel Selvin tells the definitive story of the Rolling Stones’ infamous Altamont concert in San Francisco, the disastrous historic event that marked the end of the idealistic 1960s. In the annals of rock history, the Altamont Speedway Free Festival on December 6, 1969, has long been seen as the distorted twin of Woodstock—the day that shattered the Sixties’ promise of peace and love when a concertgoer was killed by a member of the Hells Angels, the notorious biker club acting as security. While most people know of the events from the film Gimme Shelter, the whole story has remained buried in varied accounts, rumor, and myth—until now. Altamont explores rock’s darkest day, a fiasco that began well before the climactic death of Meredith Hunter and continued beyond that infamous December night. Joel Selvin probes every aspect of the show—from the Stones’ hastily planned tour preceding the concert to the bad acid that swept through the audience to other deaths that also occurred that evening—to capture the full scope of the tragedy and its aftermath. He also provides an in-depth look at the Grateful Dead’s role in the events leading to Altamont, examining the band’s behind-the-scenes presence in both arranging the show and hiring the Hells Angels as security. The product of twenty years of exhaustive research and dozens of interviews with many key players, including medical staff, Hells Angels members, the stage crew, and the musicians who were there, and featuring sixteen pages of color photos, Altamont is the ultimate account of the final event in rock’s formative and most turbulent decade. Martin’s interview with Joel Selvin was recorded on August 29, 2016.

The Total Tutor Neil Haley will interview Joel Selvin, Author of ALTAMONT. In ALTAMONT Selvin explores and exposes every detail of rock's darkest day to capture the full scope of the tragedy and its aftermath—from the excess of the Stones' hastily planned tour preceding the concert to previously unreported deaths that occurred after the Rolling Stones left the stage that night, no stone goes unturned in Selvin's investigation. Moving beyond easy explanations, Selvin delves into the powerful musical and cultural forces that left Altamont poised for calamity even before the first performer took the stage.   ALTAMONT is the labored product of thirty years of research and over a hundred interviews with many key players, including the musicians themselves, medical staff, Hells Angels members, the stage crew, and cops. Namely, with help from private investigator Scott Dudek, who as a homicide investigator for the Alameda County Sheriffs, closed the cold case still open on the Meredith Hunter killing at Altamont in 2006. All of which results in an exhaustively researched, impressively comprehensive look at the day that made history. Native Californian Joel Selvin is an award-winning journalist who has covered pop music for the San Francisco Chronicle since 1970. Selvin co-authored Sammy Hagar's number-one New York Times bestseller Red, and LA Reid's Sing to Me. He has also written thirteen other books about pop music, including the bestselling Summer of Love and most recently: Here Comes the Night.
