This week we're going on a whirlwind tour of the movies with BAFTA committee member Anna Higgs. She tells us about the BAFTA winning movies, starting with Jane Campion's The Power of the Dog starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Kenneth Branagh's Belfast and moving on to Jeymes Samuel's contemporary Western The Harder they Fall. We discuss some of the winning actors from Will Smith for King Richard, the film about the father of Venus and Serena Williams, Joanna Scanlon for Ali Khan's After Love and Tony Kotsur, the first deaf male actor to win, for Coda (which means Child of Deaf Adult). We also chat about the inspiring acceptance speech given by Lashana Lynch, for her Rising Star award voted for by the audience, who shot to fame for her role as the next 007 in No Time to Die. We're airing just before the Oscars so Anna gives us her rundown and predictions on these too – why Andrew Garfield in Lin-Manuel Miranda's Tick Tick… BOOM! and Olive Coleman in The Lost Daughter are in the running for an Oscar but weren't nominated for a BAFTA. We also discuss the smaller films making big waves like animated Danish film Flee and one of Anna's favourites, Ali & Ava. Listen in, and then head straight out to the cinema or get streaming – we give you enough good movie tips to keep you busy for weeks.

Jane Campion's “The Power of the Dog” opens like a classic Western: cattle are herded across the sweeping plains of Montana, with imposing mountains in the distance. But the plot of the film, based on a 1967 novel by Thomas Savage, isn't exactly a Western. It's a family drama about two brothers who share in the ranching business but couldn't be more different, and what happens when one of them brings his new wife and her teen-age son to live on the ranch. “The Power of the Dog” is nominated for twelve Academy Awards, the most of any film this year, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Actor. Campion talks with David Remnick about Benedict Cumberbatch's starring performance; her experience working with Harvey Weinstein, and how #MeToo has changed the film industry; and why she'd really like to direct a comedy. Plus, Caetano Veloso, a living giant of Brazilian music, was recently profiled for The New Yorker by Jonathan Blitzer. The staff writer picks some key tracks from Veloso's vast catalogue that illuminate his long career.

Richard Lawson, Vanity Fair's chief critic and co-host of the podcast Little Gold Men, joins 'Daddy Issues' for a second year and counting to discuss fatherly presence in this year's Oscars nominations and to make his winner predictions. Fathers were a source of tender support in several of this year's nominated films'— as opposed to last year when they were tragically slipping away to Alzheimer's, drunk, or learning from an octopus. Nominated films like CODA, King Richard, Dune, Flee, Raya and the Dragon, Encanto, Mitchells Vs the Machine, and Luca all feature fathers of characters who are classic outliers. There's a lot less bullying and emotional infancy among these characters and a lot more kind-hearted helping of those who deserve a voice. It was also a big year for female directors contemplating gender norms. Maggie Gyllenhall's film adaptation of Elena Ferrante's novel The Lost Daughter explores an ambivalent mother who leaves her family in pursuit of her own academic career in a narrative that is traditionally attached to fathers. Jane Campion's The Power of the Dog, set in the 1920s American West, explores repressed rage and desire, internalized homophobia, particularly femme phobia, the complexities of mentorship, and history repeating itself. It's also the most nominated film of the year, which really sticks in noted bitch Sam Elliott's craw. We also discuss the "shockingly good" West Side Story, the incredible woof that was Being the Ricardos, and unpack Campion's biggest Power of the Dog misstep. (Besides what she said to Venus and Serena Williams at the Critics Choice Awards.) --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/tell-me-about-your-father/support

We want to help elevate the impact women have on the industry by highlighting films old and new that were directed by women. And we're starting with two films from last year.Jane Campion's The Power of the Dog, based on a Thomas Savage novel of the same name, is a simmering Western of taut tension. The film has been been garnering critical acclaim and racking up award nominations and wins for its cast and its director. We'll look at the themes the movie plays with, Revisionist Westerns, and the director herself, Jane Campion. Our second film travels overseas to Julia Ducournau's decidedly French film Titane. We discussed the film briefly last week, but we couldn't stop thinking about it. So now, we're going to talk about it more. Can any of us decipher the origin of the student protest? Most importantly, what is Henry Winkler doing in this movie? (27:26)   Then we head to Montana (a hundred years ago) to discuss Jane Campion's “The Power of the Dog.” How does the invisible Bronco Henry loom over the entire story? This week, The Nose might mind if you come to the table without a washup. The 1970s are back. Again. For the nth time. But maybe it’s different this time? That said, the ’70s weren’t all that bad. And, the age-old question: Should movies have intermissions? And finally: The Power of the Dog is a Western written and directed by Jane Campion and based on the 1967 novel. It’s Campion’s first movie in 12 years, and it won the Silver Lion for Best Direction at the Venice Film Festival. The movie is an early Oscar favorite, with special notice going to performances by Kodi Smit-McPhee and Benedict Cumberbatch. The Power of the Dog is available to stream worldwide on Netflix. They kicked things off with a discussion of some of the bigger movies on offer, including Dune, Spencer, Jane Campion's The Power of the Dog, and Terence Davies's Benediction, before diving into films like Silent Land, Sundown, Bergman Island, and more.  And don't miss José's dispatch from TIFF in this week's Film Comment Letter. Episode 126 of The Movie Robcast previews this year's BFI London Film Festival. Back in cinemas after a largely digital outing in 2020 for obvious reasons, the festival this year offers its typically vast range of movies (and TV series) from around the globe. Robs Daniel & Wallis discuss their picks from the galas and other strands of the festival. There are big hitters such as the opening film The Harder They Fall, starring Idris Elba, and the closing film, The Tragedy of Macbeth, directed by Joel Coen and starring Denzel Washington. Elsewhere we hear about Edgar Wright's One Night in Soho and Jane Campion's The Power of the Dog, starring Benedict Cumberbatch. Rob D begins to fear that his selection of movies has a worryingly dark through-line, and his choices become something of a therapy session. Luckily, Rob W is on hand to lighten the picks with brighter fare. The BFI London Film Festival runs from Wednesday 6th October to Sunday 17thOctober. Details of the films playing can be found at the official website: https://whatson.bfi.org.uk/lff/Online/default.asp If you like what you hear or have any feedback, why not rate and review us wherever you listen to your podcasts? Welcome to The Last Thing I Saw. I'm your host, Nicolas Rapold. The Venice Film Festival has begun, with world premieres including Jane Campion's The Power of the Dog, Pedro Almodóvar's Parallel Mothers, Pablo Larraín's Spenser, Edgar Wright's Last night in Soho, and Denis Villeneuve's Dune. I'll be talking about as many of them as I can here on the podcast. But to start off, I thought I would talk with Paul Schrader, whose his new movie The Card Counter has its world premiere in Venice before its U.S. release on September 10th. Oscar Isaac plays a quiet gambler haunted by his time as a military interrogator at Abu Ghraib. He gets taken on by a gambling recruiter played by Tiffany Haddish, and befriends a strange young man played by Tye Sheridan, who has some scary ideas. I talked with Schrader a little about Venice (where he set his 1990 film The Comfort of Strangers), and about finishing The Card Counter in a pandemic, Tiffany Haddish's vital importance to the movie, gambling, and of course the last movies he saw.
