In this week's episode of the AIPT Movies podcast, Alex, Tim, and Matt discuss Sam Raimi's first superhero masterpiece, the gothic horror-inspired pulp hero, Darkman! Danny Elfman being Danny Elfman! A delightful cast that includes a young Liam Neeson and a pre-Fargo Frances McDormand! Sam Raimi giving all the rage-montages and kinetic camerawork you could possibly ask for! Voice-imitation skills that would make Ethan Hunt jealous! Great stunts that include an iconic helicopter action sequence! A tragic (but surprisingly funny) hero against colorful and over-the-top villains that will change the way you look at cigar-cutters forever! Are you looking for a palate cleanser after countless years of MCU/DCEU fatigue? This early entry in the superhero movie genre from one of its greatest architects may be just what you need!In addition, the gang shares their spoiler-free thoughts on Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, Extraction 2, and The Flash! You can find AIPT Movies on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you get your podcasts. As always, if you enjoy the podcast, be sure to leave us a positive rating, subscribe to the show, and tell your friends! The AIPT Movies podcast brings you the latest in movie news, reviews, and more! This week as both the Spider-Verse and Clone High make their way back to screens big and small, we trace it back to Christopher Miller & Phil Lord's first animated feature: 2007's Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs, written and directed by Miller & Lord, starring Bill Hader, Anna Faris, James Caan, Bruce Campbell and Andy Samberg, adapted from the 1978 children's book of the same name. It's a movie J Mo picked up on 3D Blu for dirt cheap out of a Shoppers Drug Mart bargain bin, and unsurprisingly given the creative team at the helm, it's a funny movie with a lot of heart that we liked a whole lot. Other topics discussed in this episode, beyond the wider work of Miller & Lord: Succession, Barry, BlackBerry, Black Barry, Jury Duty, Fast X, Are You There God? It's Me Margaret, and The Legend of Zelda. If you'd like to watch the film along with us, it's currently streaming free in Canada on the CTV app, as well as on Netflix. We'll back next week with a Jodie Foster aliens movie that's a lot different than that description might imply, 1997's Contact, written by Carl Sagan and directed by Robert Zemeckis.
This week we're talking about the Lord and Miller animated great Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs. We talk about face actors doing voice, the economy of storytelling and joke-telling, getting too mean, animated moms and whether we would eat sky food. Your host and friend Andrew Ivimey is going to be participating in a charity event called Friends for Life, a 6 day, 610KM bicycle rally from Toronto to Montreal on August 6-11th, 2023. The event is in support of the Toronto People With AIDS Foundation, which assists people living with HIV/AIDS who need food, wellness care, peer support or just to be in a place that is welcoming and safe for them. Please give what you can by visiting bike.andrewivimey.com
The Demolition derby continues this week, as we go from a self-destructive Jake Gyllenhaal dramedy to something that is decidedly not that: an early 90s action slugfest with a thin veneer of reactionary satire, dreading the coming Liberalized future. It's 1993's DEMOLITION MAN, starring Sylvester Stallone, Wesley Snipes, Sandra Bullock and Bob Gunton. We're lightly breaking the rules this week as this is a movie both hosts have sort of seen, but never given their full attention to. Is this a movie that warrants that full attention? Well... let's just say opinions are mixed on that one. On the hyperfixation front, Hayley's knee-deep in HBO shows while the Super Mario Bros Movie has sent Justin down a dark path of obsession. If you'd like to watch Demolition Man, it is not streaming anywhere at the moment. But you can buy it on Blu-ray for $5 at Walmart. We'll be back next week, as we return to the kids section, tracing the Spider-Verse crew back to their first production: Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs.

I had so much fun with Eric. You guys, he is so good. He's an LA-based actor with some incredible acting credits, such as Ender's game or Scrubs or Monk. He's also been in tons of commercials like Pepsi and Progressive, and he's won many awards, and it goes on. I mean, it's amazing all of the video games, even like Avengers and Lord of the Rings - he has been a part of a lot of things. But the conversation that really prompted me to share this specific message in the intro is improvisation. And improv is like what? You only really think congruent with an actor, but it really truly can seep into your soul as a person in mindset, creativity, teamwork, leadership, and confidence.

On this episode, Bourby talks to Emmy-winning film and television composer Silas Hite (LA), whose music you would have heard around the world from Netflix's Chef's Table to Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs. Hear how a serendipitous meeting between the the two came about some years ago, what it is like to soundtrack food and life in LA at the moment amidst the protests and unrest. Listen closely and you'll hear music from Silas's album 'Sounds for a Dinner Party' in the background, and the episode finishes on his 'food symphony' from the piece No More Doubt from the soundtrack to the Chef's Table episode featuring n/naka and chef Niki Nakayama.
Well hello there, and welcome back to The AFA Podcast. This week, we talk about the new animated feature from Netflix and Bron Animation The Willoughbys, which we were lucky enough to get a special preview of. First up,(0:03) Dan got a chance to talk to the film's director Kris Pearn (head of Story on Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs, director Cloudy 2). Then (0:18) it's time for Chris and Dan to discuss their thoughts on the film. We get into some detail about the film, but it's clearly indicated when we talk about the ending. We'd recommend watching the film first, and then listening to the review portion afterwards. Want to send us a message, question or suggestion for a future show? WORRIES OF AN ALIEN INVASION, 9 Terrifying True Paranormal Horror Stories! #WeirdDarknessWhen the Martians first land on Earth in the 1996 sci-fi comedy Mars Attacks!, for a moment it appears all will be fine. “We come in peace,” says their leader, as the music swells and a dove soars overhead. Seconds later the Martian pulls out a laser gun and opens fire on a crowd of human onlookers. Yet another blockbuster alien invasion has begun. That’s Hollywood, of course. But the melodrama underscores one of humanity’s most widely held fears: that if and when we do encounter extraterrestrial beings, they will wreak all kinds of havoc, much as they do in the movies. Or will they? IN THIS EPISODE: The legend said it was made of clay, and given life by mystical means. The Jews created it as a means of protection – so the story goes, at least. There are so many inspiring podcasts with fabulous stars out there. But their careers feel light years away from ours, don’t they? Wouldn’t it be great to hear from the guy who just booked his first pilot? Or the kid finally doing a studio pic after a bunch of low budget indies? Or the woman who’s been a series regular a few times but is only now becoming a name? What about the guy who’s been on a show for years and you know his face but what’shisnameagain? Or that actress who is now a freakin’ showrunner???? How’d THEY do it, right? How did they transition from relative obscurity, bartending and bottle service, to buying that house in Brentwood? We’re producing “Kahnversations,” a podcast that provides access to THOSE people -- your immediate predecessors -- so that you can learn from them while their battle scars are still fresh. In “Kahnversations,” our own Ryan Bailey interviews some of Lesly Kahn & Company’s working actors, directors, and writers in order to learn how they got started in Hollywood, the challenges and hurdles they faced, and how they overcame the odds. (They also dish out some crazy stories!) Listen in and enjoy as these entertainers speak candidly about their paths, processes, and experiences. You might even hear a bit about how Lesly and the Kahnstitute have influenced and shaped their careers.
