Today's episode delves into the concept of "Acclivity" and the significance behind my choice of this term. Career growth is like climbing a hill, and the "Acclivity" mindset involves a continuous pursuit of upward movement and personal development. The metaphor of an incline is compelling in representing a career, as it conveys the notion that progress often involves effort, perseverance, and overcoming obstacles. Just as climbing a hill requires determination and resilience, so too does advancing in one's career. Moreover, I highlight the role of coaching as a crucial catalyst for success. Just as a climber may benefit from guidance and support while navigating a challenging ascent, individuals can significantly enhance their career trajectories through the insights, encouragement, and strategic advice a skilled coach provides. With the right mindset and support, the career growth journey becomes attainable and a rewarding and fulfilling endeavor.Dr. Loren M. When I needed services to secure my safety and placement, I had access. Every positive outcome I have experienced is founded on this fundamental truth – sanctuary saves lives and prevents continued or worsening adverse experiences. How many stories have you read about holiday menu planning? This year, let's focus on holiday mental health planning. Take time to assess your commitments to yourself and others, and remember that it's okay not to try to please everyone. Be flexible with your plans. Check out Dr. Castagnini Podcast at:https://behindthebitepodcast.com/course/In her own words:There was really never a question that I was going to spend my life trying to help people who were in pain or suffering feel or get better. I just somehow knew it was something I was going to do.Perhaps others saw that in me as well. When I was in high school, my friend's dad saw an ad in a local paper for teen advice columnists, he told my friend I should apply because everyone was always coming to me for advice. So, out came the hefty typewriter, and off went my application. Before I knew it, I was writing a teen advice column. My Education....The University of California Santa Cruz was where I realized that I wanted to pursue a career in mental health. Starting with my first psychology course, I just "knew".Initially, I thought I wanted to pursue medical school and become a psychiatrist. So, while I majored in psychology, I also took the courses required for medical school. I even took the MCAT's. But, then something hit me as I was knee-deep into med school applications: I truly loved all of my psychology courses. I loved experiencing actual clinical work during an upper-division course. This led me to do something completely unexpected: I switched gears and applied only to graduate programs in clinical psychology. After two years at UCSC, and one year studying on exchange at the University of British Columbia, I earned my BA in Psychology, graduating with honors.2 years later, I was inducted into Psi Chi, the National Honors Society for Psychology, as a Lifetime Member, and earned my MA in Clinical Psychology, with an emphasis in Marriage and Family Therapy from Pepperdine University.I completed my doctoral studies at the University of Southern California, where I earned my PhD in Counseling Psychology. My Career....After graduate school, I was a postdoctoral resident at Kaiser Permanente. I spent the following 15 years as a staff psychologist in the adult psychiatry department while also running my own small private practice one day a week. While at Kaiser, I was the lead eating disorder specialist in my department. As the years went on, I realized that I wanted to continue doing clinical work. But, I also wanted the opportunity to do something different. Something that had a bigger, wider reach. So, I left Kaiser in October of 2019 to open my practice full-time.And Here We Are...I love that I have an opportunity to start something truly meaningful and personally near and dear to my heart. This podcast is for those of you out there who are: struggling with disordered eating....a full blown eating disorder....yo-yo dieting and struggling with weight.....body image issues.....feel like you can only be happy if you lose weight or look a certain way....or are just plain feeling trapped in a life where you can't make peace with food or your body.I was there. For years. And when I was going through my struggles, podcasts just did not exist. I wish they had. I needed to know that other people were going through what I was. I needed to hear about what types of help are out there..even help besides therapy. I needed to hear other people just talk about it. To know I was not alone. To hear that recovery is possible.I have worked with enough patients over the years to know that once you get information....once you gain the knowledge and awareness....things can start to change. But you need to hear it first. So, I am trying to get this information heard. I am trying to help from beyond the couch in this next chapter. I can only do so much from behind 4 walls---time to break them down and help more people now.I welcome you to join me and listen.I welcome you with open arms and an open ear. Dr. Hannah Schacter grew up in the Boston area and in a family where both parents were psychologists, so she was exposed to the field at an early age. She recalls being very interested in the idea of data and learning about other people. She states, “I remember being in fifth grade and taking surveys of things like people's favorite ice cream flavor in my class.” As she got older, she developed an interest in working with children. She worked at summer camps and babysat, and it wasn't until she attended college where she had the opportunity as a psychology major to merge her interests by studying child development and developmental psychology. In this podcast, Dr. Schacter shares many experiences related to her academic and professional journey to help those interested in the field of psychology gain perspective, learn from her experiences, and how best to navigate the journey. Throughout our discussion, Dr. Schacter provides copious practical advice and even shares some moments that helped shape her interests, direction, and choices regarding which university to attend for her undergraduate and graduate career as well as how she conducted the process related to searching for graduate schools and programs. Dr. Schacter is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychology at Wayne State University and Adjunct Assistant Professor in the Merrill Palmer Skillman Institute for Child & Family Development. She is also the Director of the Adolescent Relationships in Context Lab (ARC). Dr. Schacter started getting involved in research during her undergraduate career at Hamilton College in Clinton, NY. During our discussion, she explains why she travelled from the East Coast to the West Coast to attend UCLA for her graduate degrees (MA and PhD) in developmental psychology. She also discusses how she found various opportunities as an undergraduate and graduate student as well as how she found her postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Southern California. For example, she shares how she became an undergraduate research intern at Yale University by applying for the Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program through the National Science Foundation. Dr. Schacter explains the various ways of finding a postdoc fellowship. She explains one way of finding funding for postdoctoral researchers on the NSF website. In today's environment, more and more academic institutions expect that you have postdoc experience before applying for a faculty position. She states, “I would say it has become increasingly common and I would also probably say it's more common than not to have postdoc experience before entering a faculty position.” Dr. Schacter shares her advice regarding how to best select your graduate school or program. She states, “I think so much of a PhD is really what you make of it” and “ I think it's less about, you know, making the right choices and more about making a choice that feels like a strong fit.” She also points out that there is an interpersonal aspect of selecting your graduate program and mentor. She suggests that you ask yourself “is this someone you want to work closely with for, you know, 5-6 years? That's, that's an important factor as well. Do you get along? Do you feel like they're going to be a supportive mentor?” In response to my question regarding how to keep students motivated and passionate about their studies and their research, Dr. Schacter suggests immersing yourself in your work and surrounding yourself with other students, people, and mentors in the field. She also reminds us that some schools have Psi Chi, which is a society for students in psychology, and this can be used to help keep you focused and expand your knowledge and network. Near the end of our discussion, she offers some additional advice for those interested in the field of psychology. She states, “I think talk to as many people as you can, especially, you know, if you're,

Like so many, she used drugs as a means to deal with her anxiety. Then everything changed when she discovered meditation. It became the cure to the anxious thoughts swirling in her mind. When she realized the power and freedom that meditation provided, she felt compelled to teach others the skills that had saved her life. She started by leading meditation groups at treatment centers for people who were struggling with addiction. She furthered her practice through silent retreats, loving kindness practices and began the work to become a Mindfulness meditation teacher. Elizabeth has helped so many people struggling with addiction through her meditation teaching and therapy work. Now as a mother of two, she's had to find new ways to make meditation work in an environment that includes less and less dedicated time to her practice. Kathryn Greenberg is a Certified Life Coach specializing in mindfulness, trauma, and addiction. She shares her journey of healing as a way to show those who may be struggling that their life is worth living. Born and raised in Washington, D.C., Greenberg moved to Sarasota, Florida in 2013, and wonders why she waited so long. Kathryn's unique approach is informed and inspired by the time she spends working with people in very difficult circumstances – jails and courts, homeless shelters, residential treatment centers, and human service agencies. Kathryn discovered that within those individuals, living in terrific pain and struggle, lies a store of inner strength, which when mindfully accessed, can liberate them from the darkest of places. In addition to managing her practice and continuing her work as a tireless ‘hope evangelist,' Kathryn serves on the boards of the Salvation Army of Sarasota County, Lighthouse Vision Loss Education Center, and Purpose House Transitional Homes. She attended Boston University and Marymount University, and holds a degree in Developmental Psychology. She is also a member of Psi Chi, the International Honor Society in Psychology. She loves dogs, dessert, and anything crafty. Her gratitude for each day is off the charts. You can find Kathryn online... Website Twitter Instagram LinkedIn Facebook Originally published 03/10/22

Also in this episode, special guest Dr. Carrie Brown unpacks how Psi Chi chapters and members can become involved in Psi Chi's new International Advisory Committee. — Working with a coach can be one of the biggest decisions you will ever make. It's an investment in yourself and your growth. It's important to make sure you choose the right one. Working with Vincent Infante as your personal coach, you can expect to raise the standard of your life and achieve more than you ever thought was possible. That may be a bold claim, but when you are truly dedicated to creating change, the results will be completely life-altering. You'll learn how to unlock your potential and reach goals using a combination of techniques in psychology, neurolinguistics and good, old-fashioned hard work.  Valeria Teles interviews Vincent Infante — a certified Mindset & High-Performance Coach, and a licensed psychotherapist. Vincent has spent over a decade learning and working with thousands of people in varying capacities, including hospitals, clinics, in-patient units, homeless shelters, school systems, and private practice. With an extensive background in psychology, mindset, behavior, neurology, and physiology, he uses his knowledge to help individuals unlock and achieve their unique definition of success. Vin received his undergrad degree in Psychology with accolades from Psi-Chi national honor society and went on to achieve his Master's in Social Work with a clinical focus; he was a fully licensed psychotherapist at the age of 23. It was around his 9th year in the mental health field he wanted to create a more meaningful impact through genuine connection with his clients. That is when Life Coaching peaked Vin's interest as he began studying it, initially, for his own personal development. He hired his own coach and fell in love with all that coaching entails, especially the ways in which it created long-lasting change in his own life. Vin then pursued his Strategic Intervention coaching certification from Tony Robbin's RMT online training, shifting his focus to providing greater results as a Mindset and Performance Coach. At this same time, Vin had been called to become a FDNY firefighter (which was one of his lifelong dreams aside from being a therapist). He served as a firefighter during the Covid-19 pandemic year while simultaneously building his coaching practice -- and later resigned from the FDNY to serve people in the way he felt best utilized his gifts and passion. Vin is continuing to expand his coaching practice as it now remains his full-time focus. He aims to teach about mindset, strategy, goal setting, and creating life transformations. Currently embarking on his 12 th year in mental health, Vin hopes to help his clients achieve a holistic standard of living that targets peoples' mindset, sense of fulfillment, and overall quality of life.   To learn more about Vincent Infante and his work, please visit: vincentinfante.life       — This podcast is a quest for well-being, a quest for a meaningful life through the exploration of fundamental truths, enlightening ideas, insights on physical, mental, and spiritual health. The inspiration is Love. The aspiration is to awaken new ways of thinking that can lead us to a new way of being, being well.
