Four new adventures featuring classic Doctors encountering monsters from the new series of Doctor Who! 5.1 The Krillitane Feint by John Dorney The TARDIS brings the Doctor, Jamie and Zoe to a planet where a secure research base is conducting disturbing experiments. A group of captive Krillitane are test subjects for a military power, keen to understand the species' unique abilities. But who are the real monsters here? 5.2 The Dying Breed by Tim Foley When the Doctor, Leela and K9 land on the Lupari homeworld tracking a temporal anomaly, they find a kingdom in disarray. The Great Lord Garzan's son has been attacked, and strange beasts roam the frozen landscape. Whilst Leela spars with the new heir, the Doctor and K9 must work out how all these strange events are connected. Little do they know that their discoveries will shake the Lupari to their core... 5.3 The Krillitane Relic by John Dorney The TARDIS brings the Doctor and Ray to a space station cryogenic facility, where interplanetary VIPs are stored pending medical cures. There is a familiar face here too - someone the Doctor remembers, but who does not remember him... 5.4 Five Hundred Ways to Leave Your Lover by Tim Foley Chris is on a date. But it isn't working out. Perhaps he'll end it over dinner. Or on a cruise. Or in a lunar spa. But who are these figures in red? And why are they so invested in his relationship? All of reality might be at stake, and the Monks will pursue Chris wherever he goes - but as long as he manages to break up with his boyfriend, the Doctor, everything might be saved... **Please note: the collector's edition CD box set is strictly limited to 1,250 copies and will not be repressed**

The duo analyzes songs ranging from ELO's 'Evil Woman' and the Eagles' 'Take It to the Limit' to disco classics like Donna Summer's 'Love to Love You Baby' and Hot Chocolate's 'You Sexy Thing.' They introduce a playful segment featuring AI-generated Milt as a quizmaster. He just wants to work on the drums all day To commemorate four centuries in business, the Zildjian cymbal company commissioned Aaron Latos to build 400 snare drums from the same alloy that goes into their rides, crashes and high hats - staple elements of a jazz or rock drum set. Recipients include Sheila E., drummer's drummer Steve Gadd (Paul Simon's "50 Ways to Leave Your Lover") and tatted celebrity Travis Barker of Blink 182 (who survived a plane crash and dated Kim Kardashian). The anniversary passed in 2023 and Latos, who moved last year to Beacon with his wife and two young children, is 10 units shy of fulfilling the order. In the meantime, he's trying to perfect the manufacturing process for his own line of snares, tom-toms and bass drums crafted from nickel silver, which he assembles nearly from scratch in his Newburgh shop. Only the washers and tension rods clamping down the hoops that tune and tighten the drumheads are machined off-premises. By year's end, he plans to move the lathes, drills and rollers to a space in Beacon double the size of his current spot. Latos, 36, hails from West Virginia and made a living drumming in recording sessions and touring with country singer Margo Price. He performs around town with the Stephen Clair Band and takes on select students and studio projects. Drummers are notoriously picky about their gear and setup. Drum and cymbal angles must hit every time. Some prefer wood over metal snares. Others argue over tuning techniques. Every cymbal sounds different and comes in myriad shapes and sizes. Latos is so detail-oriented that he patented a snare drum throw-off system, the mechanism that lifts and holds down the coiled snare wires that add snap to the two and four beat of nearly every pop and rock song. His patent for the butt plate, which anchors the snares, is pending. "I'd have more patents, but they're expensive," he says. As far as he knows, Latos is the first to make nickel steel drums. He digs the sound, but the manufacturing process is like wrestling an alligator and presents "the most annoying and frustrating fabrication characteristics" that are "difficult to cut and work." The raw material arrives in long, flat sheets, like the plies of wood used in most drums. Labor consists of rolling, shearing and brazing them together. His loud, hefty snare drums pay homage to models used by big band jazz drummers in the 1920s and '30s designed to cut through 17-piece outfits in the days before specialized microphones. Weighty shells for his floor and rack toms are capped by silvery stainless steel and solid brass copper-colored hoops. Bass drums come with brown wood hoops. The end results are so striking that each piece looks like a sculpture. A basic snare costs $2,000 and a full drum kit starts at $10,000. Customers range from doctors and lawyers to pros, including Bob Meyer, a jazz cat and early adopter, Jeremiah Green of Modest Mouse (who died in 2023) and Harvey Sorgen, who has played with Hot Tuna, Derek Trucks and Paul Simon. Latos' workshop is relatively tidy, although gold and silver shavings litter the floor, including the rug in the cozy corner with a couch, turntable and pile of vinyl records capped by Mel Torme, Chuck Mangione and Haitian group Bossa Combo discs. "Every 22 minutes or so, I come over and flip the record," he says. "It helps me focus on what I am doing and what I should be doing." Latos Drums is located at 11 Spring St. in Newburgh and at latosdrums.com.

"Rock You Like a Hurricane" Vor allem ein Song wird zum absoluten Durchbruch: "Rock You Like a Hurricane". The potency of those songs, how they could evoke such raw emotions - whether it was Paul Simon's '50 Ways to Leave Your Lover' or The Carpenters' 'We've Only Just Begun'. Well, this episode is a homage to the power of music, its unforgettable moments, and the rock legends who've shaped its course. We kick off with a nostalgic trip to when The Police graced the stage at CBGB for their first time - a memory that's now 45 years old. We move on to delve into the hidden secrets of The Police's Synchronicity album and Paul McCartney's bass contribution to The Rolling Stones' new album, Hackney Diamonds. But that's not all, we also navigate the surprising connections between iconic albums, shedding light on how Paul McCartney, John Lennon, and Mick Jagger lent their voices to each other's music. Impressively, we dive into the influences of our upbringing, reminiscing about the Ramones' third studio album, 'Rocket to Russia', and The The's unforgettable song 'Uncertain Smile'. We reflect on how these unforgettable tunes formed the soundtrack of our youth and school dances. Lastly, we reflect on the emotional gravity of break-up mixtapes and the songs that helped us navigate the stormy seas of heartbreak. So, are you ready to take a walk down memory lane with us? How Game Theory Can Be Used To Explain Human Behavior | Erez Yoeli

We know human behavior isn't rational. But this episode illustrates behavior using a surprising concept - game theory. This eye opening conversation with Erez Yoeli delves into what game theory is and the remarkable way it can be used to explain the things we think, feel and do. Our guest, Erez Yoeli has co-authored a new book, alongside Moshe Hoffman, called “Hidden Games: The Surprising Power of Game Theory to Explain Irrational Human Behavior”. Erez is a research scientist at the MIT Sloan School of Management and he teaches the undergraduate Game Theory course at Harvard. His research focuses on altruism: understanding how it works and how to promote it.  To explain what exactly game theory is, we have turned to Britannica's user-friendly definition;“economics is much like a game, wherein players anticipate each other's moves, and therefore, it requires a new kind of mathematics, which they called game theory.” This explanation opens the door to exploring how our behavior is influenced by our anticipation of the moves and choices of those around us. We hope you enjoy our fun and mind blowing chat with Erez on how game theory can bridge the divide between the rationality of classical economics and the irrationality of behavioral science. Paul Simon sells song catalog to Sony Music, but no one's saying what the price was Paul Simon is the latest icon to sell his rich catalog of songs. Sony Music Publishing announced March 31 that it has acquired Simon's catalog, which includes six decades of music, from his time in Simon & Garfunkel to his solo career. Financial details of the deal were not announced. Simon has won 16 Grammy Awards. His well-known songs include Bridge Over Troubled Water, The Boxer, The Sound of Silence, Mrs. Robinson, Homeward Bound, I am a Rock and 50 Ways to Leave Your Lover, among others. “I'm pleased to have Sony Music Publishing be the custodian of my songs for the coming decades,” Simon, 79, said in a statement. (AP) Leonardo DiCaprio, Katy Perry urge Biden to refuse Brazil environment deal Dozens of U.S. and Brazilian celebrities, including actor Leonardo DiCaprio, pop star Katy Perry and musician Gilberto Gil, released a letter on April 20 urging U.S. President Joe Biden not to agree to any environmental deals with Brazil's President Jair Bolsonaro. The U.S. has been holding talks with Brazil since February on a potential collaboration to stop surging destruction of the Amazon rainforest. Indigenous and environmental groups say that any deal with the Bolsonaro government risks legitimizing a Brazilian administration that is encouraging environmental destruction and human rights violations. “We urge your Administration to hear their call and not commit to any agreements with Brazil at this time,” the celebrities said in an open letter to Biden. As one of the most influential drummers of all time, Steve Gadd set a new standard in contemporary drumming techniques and performance, and for years everyone has tried to play like him. His work is unavoidably recognizable, from the military, cadence-like shuffle intro on Paul Simon’s “50 Ways to Leave Your Lover”, to arguably one of the finest drum solos ever recorded on the title track from Steely Dan’s “Aja”, to his current touring gigs with James Taylor and Eric Clapton – Steve has a way of leaving his rhythmic stamp on most every track that he’s performed on over the past five decades. It’s good to know the native New Yorker is healthy and still going strong...and he’s here today to chat with us. Inside MusicCast is pleased to welcome the legendary Steve Gadd.

We talk about how the album reflects an ‘adult’ approach in subject matter and composition, how aspects of it reveal more as the listener ages, the balance between specificity in Simon’s lyrics but still leaving a place for the listener to find themselves in the song, whether drummer Steve Gadd deserves a writing credit on 50 Ways to Leave Your Lover, whether the Simon and Garfunkel reunion song My Little Town fits in the flow of the record and Simon and Brian reflect on their experience interviewing Paul Simon for their podcast.

Florida keeps setting records for COVID-19, and Gov. Ron DeSantis keeps urging people to stop focusing on all those new cases. Also, on today’s Sunrise: — There have now been more than 206,000 confirmed cases of coronavirus exposure in Florida. an increase of 60,000 in the past week. Fatalities are now at least 3,880, also an increase of more than 300 over the past week. — DeSantis is determined to continue reopening the state for business and tourism and insists that theme parks in Central Florida are taking so many precautions that they’ll be some of the safest places in the state. But in South Florida, officials head in the opposite direction. The Mayor of Miami Dade is issuing an emergency order shutting down dining rooms and gyms to try to halt the spread of coronavirus. — One of the best things to come out of the COVID-19 crisis — parody songs. Remember Paul Simon’s “50 Ways to Leave Your Lover?” — Checking — in with a couple of Florida Men. One robbed a pizza guy and pooped his pants when he saw the cops. The other pushed an 86-year-old man out of an elevator — in the name of social distancing.

In short, there's no one way your relationship has to be for it to be valid and healthy. This episode has been a long time coming because it's the main way in which both co-hosts really go against the societal grain in true villain fashion. Even among millennials, rates of non-monogamy are below 10%, despite the fact that we are the most open to non-monogamy than any previous generation in American history. This week, Wayne brings us Equinox, the fifth studio album by Styx. This would be their first album for A&M Records and their last album with guitarist John Curulewski. He would be replaced by guitarist and singer Tommy Shaw on their next release, “The Grand Illusion,” at which point Styx would take the form which most of us remember as one of the groups that make up the soundtrack of our childhood. Equinox would only go to #58 on the album charts, but would see a resurgence with the release of The Grand Illusion in 1977. Midnight Ride James "JY" Young takes the vocal duties on this track, also written by Young. It is a fast, rocking song about a one-night stand with a groupie. Lorelai This track is the biggest hit from the album and features the vocals of both James Young and the distinctive sound of Dennis DeYoung. The name of the album was from a brainstorming session, and “Equinox” was the only name that everyone didn't hate. Lorelai was the name of a water fairy. Prelude 12 This song is performed and written by John Curulewski. This instrumental on a 12-string guitar is the prelude to Suite Madame Blue, and is often missed when that song is played on the radio or Spotify. Suite Madame Blue This well-known epic was written for the US Bicentennial. Wistful yet positive despite its minor key, the song calls for reflection and responsibility. The song was done in one day. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK: Theme from "Laverne and Shirley" This television series spin-off from "Happy Days" would debut in January on ABC. STAFF PICKS: “Dream On” by Aerosmith There is no mistaking the opening riff from this epic pick by Brian. It was originally released in 1973, but had its album re-release in December 1975 and was marching up the charts in January. Steven Tyler was not originally comfortable singing in the higher octaves, but fortunately overcame that fear. “Island Girl” by Elton Jon Rob's staff pick was #1 for three weeks, and was the first single from the album "Rock of the Westies." Kiki Dee is on background vocals on this Caribbean-influenced hit. “50 Ways to Leave Your Lover” by Paul Simon Bruce's staff pick is the second single off Simon's album "Still Crazy After All These Years." This is Simon's sole #1 hit as a solo artist. “Tower” by Angel Wayne cranks things back up with his staff pick from a group discovered by Gene Simmons of Kiss. Angel had a prog rock vibe and dressed in all white during their performances. "Tower" is a medieval themed track. LAUGH TRACK: “Convoy” CW McCall We finish off this episode with this ode to the CB radio. Citizens Band was pretty much the social media app of the 70's.

EPISODE #116: “Death By A Thousand Tax Cuts” This week Host Dave Bledsoe asks the doctor to give him news, only find out he has bad case of loving you. (The prognosis is not good.) On the show this week we FINALLY do the health care episode we've been trying avoid like a Republican Congressman in his district. Like his constituents, it leaves us even more pissed off than when we started. Along the way we learn the history of medicine in America, like how many chickens it would cost for a syphilis treatment (three but no promises it works) and the best places to die on the streets of your town. (Near the pizza parlor, trash pickup will cart off your body). We also discover the rather disturbing backstory of Mr. Peabody and Sherman--no really, we are not cool with this, it's kind of sick. We also talk about LBJ's dick, which you are required to do each time your bring up LBJ in a historical context, why do you think they wait so late in High School to teach you about VietNam? We explain exactly why your insurance sucks and learn long after their demise exactly what the hell an HMO was supposed to be. (They financed trips to golf clubs for doctors.) We look at who suffers under the Senate Tax Cut Bill masquerading has a health care. (That would be YOU, unless you are rich, then you will do GREAT!) Finally we close with what you can do to help. (Die quickly) Our sponsor this week is Shitshurance, we cover your shit. We open the show with Chris Rock explaining insurance and close with Len Rozamus (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gfYd8TFo1qU) covering Jackson Brown's ophthalmological opus. The day Megan Braden Perry woke up and decided her husband smelled too bad and liked loud noise too much to stay married to him, she started mentioning it on Twitter. Her husband, some days or maybe weeks later, decided to check Twitter out for himself after his mom told him she d been reading some pretty weird stuff about him. What transpired next led Megan to get a divorce and be happily dating a bunch of guys number unknown including "a little dude down the street" from Wayfare. Rachel Vette, the singer in the band The Vettes, reluctantly admits she s married though she lost the wedding ring she never really had. Yes, it s a weird story but Rachel doesn t like peer or societal pressure and most of her life is pretty non conforming including marrying a guy whose name is a secret and ditching her ring under bizarre and half remembered circumstances. Nick Napolitano is a comedian at The New Movement Theater and the producer of New Orleans ever growing comedy festival, Hell Yes Fest. Nick almost became a tax preparer and a history teacher but booze and comedy saved his life. Photos by Alison Moon. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Show Notes Episode 71: Someone Set Us Up the Bomb This week Host Dave Bledsoe discovers how to not stop worrying and very much fear the Bomb! He would also like someone to get this crying baby out of his studio! In the episode we find that repetition is very good, repetition is very good, as we go through the Chernobyl grade meltdown that is The Donald Trump Campaign for President. Along the way we learn about Series Finale of MASH and what do when that damn chicken just won't stop clucking. (SPOILER ALERT: It wasn't a chicken!) We also urge you to never go full Bullworth. Never one to duck hard hitting questions (We will usually Goose), we ponder whether the New York Post in 1809 would run a woodcut print of Dolley Madison's nudes. (Her body, her choice! We don't slut shame!) The question of Trump quitting the race is definitively answered, (No) and finally we tell you exactly what need to be done to Stop Trump. (Hint: Some of you aren't going to like it at all.) Promotional Consideration provided this week by Bill's Second Hand Medal Shop, all of the Bling None of the Blood! RJ.  He’s amazing.  He’s funny, deep, passionate, talented, and creative. We’re taking D2D on the road and bringing you several amazing guests.  These folks are here because they are interesting, enthusiastic, bright, and sonogenic.  (Not sure if that’s a word…but if a person who always looks good in a picture is “photogenic,” then a person who always sounds good on a podcast is, “sonogenic.”) I’ll share with you here the structure of these upcoming episodes: Introductions and making the connection between guest and Greg.  (This will be most important when a guest is on for the first time. [duh]) What’s the booze that we’re drinking? (We always talk about what we’re drinking, and also other aspects of the booze. [e.g. What’s the abv and ibu of the beer?  What’s the brand of whiskey?  Proof?  What’s the grape? Etc.]) What drives you to drink, in general and/or tonight? (The entire D2D endeavor is this: There are things that drive us to drink. Rather than just allowing these things to fester in us or cause us to become pessimistic or cranky, it’s my preference to have a few drinks, talk it out, laugh, and find the glimmers of light.  Ultimately, this endeavor is a way to let go of defeatism and apathy and bring humor, optimism, community, and constructive energy to the very things that drive us to drink.) Expertise Area. (With any guest, I like to ask questions related to what I perceive to be one or several of their expertise areas. We all have many.  It isn’t necessarily your job, but perhaps a hobby or even just some piece of esoterica that I think will be interesting and fun to record.) Wildcard. (What would you do for a Klondike bar?) Wildcard follow-up. (This could go in any direction.  Theoretically, we’ll be quite inebriated at this point, so that should make it maximally wild.) Farewells So, there you go. In terms of R.J., we move through #1, #2, and #3 in this first of three episodes. Regarding beer, I move us through an array of big beers (i.e. all over 7% abv), sweet&malty to bitter&hoppy, starting with my favorite belgian style quad (Ommegang Three Philosophers), then an Imperial Stout (Samuel Smiths), an Imperial Pilsner (Lagunitas), an American Strong Ale (Arrogant Bastard), and finally an imperial IPA (Hop Stoopid). And music.  Lots of it over the next three weeks.  Today, you get a healthy dose of Paul Simon and Steve Gadd.  At the beginning, the them song from Louis C.K.’s brilliant piece of cinematic/theater art, “Horace and Pete.”  In the middle, “Late in the Evening” from Paul Simon’s Concert in the Park. (Listen for Gadd’s Mozambique beat over a conga rhythm.)  And to end, the baddest ass drum lick in the history of popular music, “50 Ways to Leave Your Lover.” Have fun.  We sure did. -G

A Way with Words — language, linguistics, and callers from all over

This week on "A Way with Words": We often hear that English is going to hell in a handbasket. Actually, though, linguistic handwringing about sinking standards and sloppy speech has been going on for centuries--at least as far back as the 1300's! And: language also changes to fit the needs the workplace. Take, for example, the slang of flight attendants. Listen on your next trip, and you might overhear them talking about landing lips, flying dirty, or crew juice. Plus, a discreet phrase from Arabic for advising someone that he has food in his beard. All this, plus a word game based on Paul Simon's "50 Ways to Leave Your Lover," dead as a doornail, the green-eyed monster, and learning that fat meat is greasy.FULL DETAILSIt turns out the creativity of flight attendants doesn't stop with the pre-takeoff safety demonstration; they have slang for all kinds of fun stuff, from the lipstick they apply before passengers deplane (landing lips) to the 2-for-1 special, which is when the plane hits the runway upon landing, then bounces up and lands again.  Dead as a doornail is a common idiom, but what exactly is a doornail, and why is it dead? The saying goes at least as far back as the 1350's, and may simply refer to the fact that the nails used to make big, heavy doors were securely fixed in place--the modifier dead having the same sort of unequivocal sense suggested in the expression dead certain. What do flight attendants call that point in takeoff preparations when they walk up and down the aisle to make sure seatbelts are securely fastened? It's the crotch watch, also known as a groin scan. The expression flying dirty refers to when the plane is traveling with all its slats, flaps and wheels hanging down. The term green-eyed monster, meaning jealousy, first appears in Shakespeare's Othello, when Iago says, "Oh, beware, my lord, of jealousy!/ It is the green-eyed monster which doth mock/ The meat it feeds on."A stepmother slice, according to a 1915 citation in the Dictionary of American Regional English, is a slice of bread that's too thick to bite.  Quiz Guy John Chaneski has a game built on the lyrical pattern of Paul Simon's "50 Ways to Leave Your Lover" with clues like, Mr. Tyson, even a boxer like you shouldn't have a problem finding a 3-wheeled ride out of here. There's a gazelle on the lawn, meaning you have schmutz on your face, is a fun way to tip someone off to wipe their chin. The expression actually comes to us from Arabic, where the expression there's a gazelle in the garden means that you have something in your beard.Flying on the backside of the clock, in airline lingo, refers to traveling when most of the people where you live are asleep.Frequent the adjective and frequent the verb can be pronounced differently, with the verb getting an emphasis on the second syllable. Wikipedia has a great list of these heteronyms, where two words are spelled the same but pronounced differently. If you live in a city in India, you probably have at least some facility in at least two languages. As Salman Rushdie once observed: "If you listen to the urban speech patterns there you'll find it's quite characteristic that a sentence will begin in one language, go through a second language and end in a third. It's the very playful, very natural result of juggling languages. You are always reaching for the most appropriate phrase."What's the best term for an ex-wife's new husband? A caller in Chico, California, is friendly with both his ex-wife and her new love, and wonders if there's a more civil term than floozy. Other options: the second shift, and Tupperware, since that person's getting your leftovers. Have a better term for the new spouse of your ex?The writer Richard Trench has a lovely quote that echoes Ralph Waldo Emerson's famous lines about language as fossil poetry: "Language is the amber in which a thousand precious thoughts have been safely embedded and preserved."It's commonly heard these days that English is going to hell in a handbasket, but it's worth remembering that we've always said things like this. A hundred years ago, as telephones became more and more common, sticklers railed against the popular shortening of telephone to simply phone. The moral here is that language is always changing, and in hindsight, not necessarily for the worst.Learning that fat meat is greasy, which means learning something the hard way, is a common idiom used almost exclusively in the African-American community, and refers to a juicy cut of the pig called fatmeat. Linguist Geneva Smitherman has a great entry for the saying in her book Word from the Mother: Language and African Americans. In airline slang, a leanover is an abbreviated version of a layover, or one in which there's not enough time to actually lie down. The term so long, meaning "goodbye," does not come from the Arabic word salaam. Its origin is German. If you've ever had the experience of casting a dream film or TV episode in your head—say, putting Benedict Cumberbatch and Johnny Lee Miller, both of whom play Sherlock Holmes on TV, in the same show together—that imaginary scenario comes from your headcanon. Why is there an upstate New York but not an upstate New Jersey, or an Oklahoma panhandle but not a Missouri panhandle? Both geographic phenomena exist in those places, but the terminology varies.A push present is a gift a father gives to a mother for giving birth. I'll be John Brown's slew foot, a euphemism for "I'll be damned," makes reference to the abolitionist riot leader John Brown, who was said to be damned after he was hanged. Slew in this sense means "twisted."Crew juice is what an airline crew drinks after a flight at the bar or on the way to the hotel. This episode was hosted by Martha Barnette and Grant Barrett.--A Way with Words is funded by its listeners: http://waywordradio.org/donateGet your language question answered on the air! He called it The Game and it inspired me to write my own songs, something I had never done before. With musical enhancement and emotional encouragement from Matt Silvia, the songs began to blossom so we decided to record a dozen of them. Each song’s subject matter and style varies considerably from the next, prompting me to call the collection Mood Swing. I’ve since adopted The Game as a ListenLocalsd.com event and it continues to inspire countless songwriters throughout San Diego and beyond. I often get credit for The Game and Jeff Berkley credits Steve Poltz, Bob Schneider and Glen Phillips but who ever is responsible, one thing is for sure… you’ll be seeing these titles again soon. Thanks to Jeff Berkley for the inspiration and production and to all the crazy talented musicians who added their personal touch to make the songs come alive. Love to my family for support and to San Diego’s local music scene and all who support it. Thanks to The Ordeal for being the best band ever and to my handsome husband for loving me and my special words. Cathryn
