Creator Talks proudly presents the husband and wife team of writer Paul Tobin and artist Colleen Coover.  Together they created the costumed teen cat burglar Bandette.   Bandette began as a digital publication in 2012 on Comixology through Monkeybrain Comics. It was nominated for four Eisner's Awards in 2013.     Not long after, Dark Horse Comics collected the single issues into soft and hard cover editions.   The next Bandette hard cover collection will be released by Dark Horse Comics on July 7th 2021 is Volume 4: The Six Finger Secret.   I discuss with Colleen how she illustrates Bandette and the reason for her bold primary color choices.   It would not be Creator Talks if I did not get personal with my guests so I ask the happy couple how they met. Did Cupid's arrow strike and was it love at first sight?   Paul and Colleen once managed a comic book store in Iowa. Paul shares how he managed to build his comic book collection while he worked there as an employee and how comic shops have changed since the 1980s.   He is also an avid comic art collector. Paul talks about some of his favorite pieces of art and why he considers himself lucky to have them. What is it about these artists' work that appeals to Paul? Which ones tuned him off as a youth but now from whom he has great admiration. His answers may surprise you.   How has collecting art become an education itself for Paul and Colleen as creators?   Paul and Colleen made several trips to France, which is the setting of Bandette's adventures. They share some of their special memories of France and later their decision to move from Iowa to Portland, Oregon for the sake of their careers.   In closing I ask Paul and Colleen my Final Nine Questions including what they like to do for recreation, beverage of choice, pet peeve, missed opportunities and when they took a risk.   Fini   Creator Talks Theme Song: "Jazz Relax" from LoopsLab  Creator Talks logo by The Design Punk Transition Music - French Music "Jazz In Paris" Media Right Porduction "Spanish Flea"  by Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass    Please rate and review Creator Talks on Apple Podcasts   More about Bandette: The Six Finger Secret   About Paul Tobin   About Colleen Coover

In this episode, Wendi talks to two creative teams of popular webcomics- first half with artist JK Woodward (Star Trek, Doctor Who, Fallen Angel) and writer Chris Kipiniak about their book, Behemoth, now available in a 4 story arc from Monkeybrain Comics. Best described as "Island of Dr. Moreau meets the Dirty Dozen" it details the story of a girl's descent into monsterhood and joining an elite mercenary team of teens in varying degrees of transformation. All of it is available now digitally, only 99 cents each, through Comixology. After that, it's time for the team behind the long running book, PI Jane- cowriters Lauren Burke (Womanthology) and Greg Sorkin and artist Tony Maldonado. They bring their comedic sensibilities to discussing the funny, irreverent, pop culture style of the girl detective, as well as the popular side story of "Cake Vs. Pie" and Tony's skill at drawing violent food. Soon to have new issues released through Caliber, you can find the story until now at Monkeys Plus Typewriters.

This week on the podcast Derek is joined by Andy Wolverton, yet another doctor who talks about comics…and a regular reviewer on The Comics Alternative blog. They review two new titles: Dan Goldman's Red Light Properties (IDW Publishing) and issue #1 of Antony Johnston and Justin Greenwood's new Image series, The Fuse. First, the Two Guys jump into Goldman's latest work, which originally appeared in digital format through MonkeyBrain Comics. They discuss one of the book's greatest strengths, the author's handling of the human drama underlying this “horror” story — what Andy calls a mix between Ghostbusters and American Beauty – as well as Goldman's digital art and his unique approach to visual storytelling. Next, Derek and Andy turn to the first issue of The Fuse, focusing on the title's mash-up of procedural and science fiction narratives. While mixing detective stories with other genres is nothing new — Brubaker and Phillips's Fatale is perhaps the best recent example here of another such comic — Johnston and Greenword present The Fuse as something fresh, making it one of the promising new series from Image Comics.

This week's Talking Comics Podcast is all about our favourite people in the world... Our listeners. Yup, that's right! Even moreso than comic book writers and artists, we adore YOU guys the mostest. True story. That's why we decided to dedicate this show to all of you and any questions that you may have whether they're comic book related or personal. We'll be doing these shows semi-regularly, so if we didn't get to your question this time around, we have a list for next time. As for our regular segments like Book of the Week... Steve is crazy about Monkeybrain Comics' Masks and Mobsters #1 (available  exclusively on ComiXology) while Stephanie enjoyed the crap out of Monkeybrain's Bandette #1 (also  exclusively on ComiXology). Bobby takes us under the sea with TC favourite Jeff Lemire's new book, Underwater Welder and last, but not least, Bob encourages us to pick up the hidden gem, Hilly Rose. We say it on the show, but just in case you missed it, the Talking Comics crew on Twitter are: Bobby: @ bobbyshortle Steve: @ dead_anchoress Stephanie: @ hellocookie And Bob's email is  bobreyer@talkingcomicbooks.com FYI: the gang have brand new avatars on Twitter, Facebook and they'll be uploaded here to the Talking Comics site shortly. Yes, that's right, the crew have gone all superhero on the world, thanks to the wonderful Hanie Mohd (a FANTASTIC artist who recently had her art featured in the back of Kelly Sue DeConnick's Captain Marvel #1). Like them? Make sure to follow her and let us know what you think of our new superhero pictures.
