The Dream Journal
Ethical Dream Sharing with Rev. Geoff Nelson

We focus on how to support each other respectfully as we explore our dreams without unduly influencing or belittling each other. Geoff starts out by sharing some incidents that sparked his interest in ethics. He then shares some of the principles of the Clearness Committee which was written in the 1660s as a guideline for the Quaker community to support spiritual seekers in their midst. One principle is that the supporters are encouraged to ask probing questions rather then directive questions.  Geoff and I are both members of the Ethics Committee at the IASD (International Association for the Study of Dreams), and we speak about the IASD Ethic Statement written in the late 1990s. You can read the ethics statement at www.ASdreams.org/ethics-and-confidentiality/ Rev. Nelson then speaks about using dreams as part of other spiritual practices including labyrinth walking and personal prayer. He shares that dreamwork has been the most powerful spiritual practice that he has experienced and speaks about some of his personal practices around dreams and spirituality. We speak with two callers. First Chris from Felton shares some dreams she has been having about being a recent empty nester. We also take a call from Ahleen from Santa Cruz who laments that most of her dreams are about everyday problems, and she wishes she could have more comforting or uplifting dreams. BIO. Rev. Geoff Nelson, D. Min., is a retired Presbyterian pastor, from Whittier, California. He is also a trained spiritual director, labyrinth facilitator and received his D. Min. degree for running dream groups in churches which his book, “Dreaming in Church” describes. Rev. Nelson is part of the IASD (International Association for the Study of Dreams) serving on the ethics committee and the conference planning committee. He has been involved in hosting several regional southern California dream conferences with IASD. Geoff is excited about the upcoming ISD conference in Tucson next summer, which will be the first live conference in three years. Geoff can be reached at ggnelson(at)ix.netcom.com. We play clips from two different versions of the guest-selected song John O'Dreams. Ambient music created by Rick Kleffel new every week. This week, we're bringing you Building Local Power a little early in light of recent developments with the Sprint and T-Mobile merger. Host Chris Mitchell, interviews two telecommunications experts to get their take on the merger and its potential impact. First Chris talks to Gigi Sohn, a Distinguished Fellow at the Georgetown Law Institute for Technology Law & Policy. Chris also talks with Blair Levin, a Senior Fellow at the Brookings Institute. They discuss: How the T-Mobile and Sprint Merger could raise prices for millions of Americans, especially low-income households, and otherwise harm innovation. The importance of mobile when households can't afford a fixed Internet connection Precedent for blocking the merger, including the failed AT&T and T-Mobile merger How Wall Street thinks about mergers and what local policymakers can learn from Wall Street analysts Wall Street understands that the world is about probabilities, not certainties. And, in Washington, that is really a bad way of thinking about it because in Washington you don't actually own a problem, you own a narrative, and you should never be anything other than 100% certain of the correctness of your narrative. But that's just not the way that the real world works. Chris Mitchell: Hey, Hibba. How's it going? Hibba Meraay: Good. How are you? Chris Mitchell: I'm a little bit worried. I think we're talking about the 2020 election. I didn't prepare a whole lot. It's 476 days away. I'm getting a little bit nervous about it. I'm sure how ready I am to talk about it today. Hibba Meraay: Don't worry Chris. You can just catch up watching all of the political comedy commentary. I don't even watch the debates anymore. I just watch the Daily Show recap of it. It's fine, but that's actually our topic for today. Chris Mitchell: Oh. Whew, I was really worried when I woke up. Hibba Meraay: You actually interviewed some folks to talk about the T-Mobile and Sprint merger, which is a topic we have touched on before. So, my question for you is, why isn't this over yet? Chris Mitchell: I would say because we've gotten to a point in time in which, if you're powerful enough, you can't lose. You can just drag it out. This merger, I think, is more than a year old now, or approaching it. I think many of us thought we'd know if we'd won or lost. And by the way, winning means preserving competition. Losing would be losing competition in this sector. In an ordinary time, we might have seen a decision made, but we are not living in ordinary times. I don't know if you'd noticed that. Hibba Meraay: Yeah. I would say that's even an understatement right now. You interviewed two people. A little bit later we're going to hear from Blair Levin. But first, Gigi Sohn. Why her? Chris Mitchell: Gigi has very unique characteristics. I mean, not only is she very knowledgeable on these, but anyone who knows her knows that she also has this characteristic of in-your-face honesty, I would say. Which is that she sticks to what she believes, and she's not going to sugarcoat it, and she's not going to try to change her message based on who she's to talking to so much. She's going to tell you what she thinks, and I've always really respected that. She's spending a lot of time working on this issue. Gigi is someone who … We'll talk in the interview briefly about her background, but she's spend a lot of time in public interest, telecom, and working at the FCC recently, the Federal Communications Commission. So I though she'd be a perfect person to discuss this issue with. Hibba Meraay: Yeah,

First Chris read a passage from 365 Tao titled Horizon, which revealed the necessity to view your life from a higher vantage point so you can see things on the horizon as they approach you. When you don't see something coming and it hits you hard, you may feel like the universe is punishing you, but if you saw it coming you could have easily avoided it, or at least prepared for it. This is wisdom. Lifting your gaze above small, day-to-day occurrences that may seem to be good or bad “luck.” Avoid the trap of superstition! What Leonard Mlodinow (in The Drunkard's Walk) calls “randomness” is the scientific word for the phenomenon/field in which “karma” is able to be delivered. “Karma” = the reflection of ourselves taking the form of circumstances. The world is vibrating and plastic, and consciousness directs the formation of things and circumstances using the atoms, etc. as it wills.  Like the construction of a fractal, the small happenings in life can seem random but the superstructure which they form is predictable and unavoidable (and beautiful!). Consciousness designs that form and then the universe, via its vibrating tiny parts, fulfills that design. Chris tells the story of his finding Sahaj Marg meditation. It could have happened a month before or the year after. Or via internet or via word of mouth. But it was ready to happen and GOING to happen due to the student and the teacher being ready. Some higher intelligence facilitated that circumstance. Pure randomness vs karma, fate, etc? Enjoy listening to the entire episode! Keep Shining! This episode of the Mystic Access podcast is brought to you by Blind Alive. We have two demonstrations for you today.  First Chris talks about the [amazon text=Skybell HD video doorbell&asin=B01DLLU1AI] and why you might want one.    He walks us through the app on his iPad to show how it works with VoiceOver. Kim takes us through the Sling TV app on the fourth generation Apple TV and shows us the progress in accessibility.  She notes it isn't perfect but is usable. She also  asks a question at the end of the Sling presentation.  She wants to know if people would be interested in an audio tutorial for the Apple TV.

When a presenter rises to the top and stays there, it's usually a combination of the talent, the station and a time and a place. When the talent moves to a new station, it's often the case that the audience fails to follow to any significant degree. There are many examples where it has not, and a few where it has. Now, maybe times are changing. There is more flicking, loyalties to stations are lessening, and whilst radio penetration remains high, it's simply easier now to explore and ever-growing range of stations. Social media too helps to keep the talent brand alive, and its audience informed of its new home. Chris Moyles left Radio 1 after ten years; and was a powerful influence in contemporary British radio, the likes of whom can be counted on a couple of hands. A few more will find their way onto that stage given a few more years and sufficient time at the right station. Enjoy here the first show from Chris after three years' absence. It was a great performance. The feel of anarchy and freedom; the sort which has immaculate production/self-production at its heart.

First Chris talks about working with a startup, with the latest tools and lots of experimentation. On the other side, there's the corporate development world, which is far more conservative and resisting change. Then the conversation turns to progressive enhancement, making new versions of web pages using modern tools and letting the old pages serve older browsers until its no longer needed.
