Inside Victory Lane - The Daytona 500 Podcast

The 2012 Daytona 500 was the first stock car race of the 2012 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series season and the 54th iteration of the event. It was held between February 27–28, 2012 at Daytona International Speedway in Daytona Beach, Florida, before a crowd of 140,000. The race, extended to 202 laps and 505 miles (813 km) due to a green-white-checker finish, was won by Matt Kenseth driving for Roush Fenway Racing as his first win of the season and his second Daytona 500 victory. Dale Earnhardt, Jr. finished second and Greg Biffle came in third. The race was scheduled for February 26 but heavy rain forced NASCAR officials to delay it until the next day. The race was scheduled to then start at 12:00 PM EST but rain pushed it further back. When it got underway at 7:02 p.m. EST, pole-sitter Carl Edwards was immediately passed by Biffle before the first turn. Biffle maintained this position until he was passed by David Ragan on lap eleven. Denny Hamlin took over the lead after a second caution period and led the race for 57 laps, during which Biffle also led. Matt Kenseth assumed the first place on lap 146 and maintained it until a seventh caution period twelve laps later. The race was stopped for two hours and five minutes after Juan Pablo Montoya hit a jet dryer on lap 160, causing fuel to seep onto the track and catch fire. Kenseth regained the first position at the lap 166 restart, and maintained it during the remaining thirty-four laps to win the race. The race had ten cautions and saw twenty-five lead changes by ten different drivers. The result meant Kenseth led the Drivers' Championship with 47 points, five ahead of Earnhardt, Biffle, and Hamlin. Jeff Burton followed in fifth place on 41 points. Ford led the Manufacturers' Championship with nine points, three ahead of Chevrolet in second. Toyota was third with four, and Dodge was in fourth. The race attracted an average of 13.69 million television viewers, with 36.5 million watching part or all of the race, making it the second most-watched 500 in history.

Inside Victory Lane - The Daytona 500 Podcast

The 2010 Daytona 500 was the first stock car race of the 2010 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series. The 52nd annual running of the Daytona 500, it was held on February 14, 2010, in Daytona Beach, Florida, at Daytona International Speedway, before a crowd of about 175,000 attendees. Earnhardt Ganassi Racing driver Jamie McMurray won the 208-lap race from the thirteenth position. Dale Earnhardt Jr. of Hendrick Motorsports finished in second, and Roush Fenway Racing's Greg Biffle came in third. Mark Martin, who had the pole position (the oldest pole winner in Daytona 500 history at 51 years and 27 days), led the opening four laps before he was passed by Kasey Kahne on lap five, before he retook it two laps later. The race lead changed 52 times amongst a then record-breaking 21 different drivers during the course of the race, with Kevin Harvick leading the most laps (41). It was twice stopped because a large pothole had developed between turns one and two, because of moisture, cold weather temperatures, and all the heavy cars scraping the tarmac surface, as they ran low to the ground for better aerodynamic efficiency. Harvick led on the 206th lap, until McMurray passed him a lap later. McMurray held it for the final lap to claim his first Daytona 500 victory, his second at Daytona International Speedway, and the fourth of his career. Because this was the first race of the season, McMurray led the Drivers' Championship with 195 points, followed by Earnhardt in second place who had 175 points and Biffle in third with 170 points. Clint Bowyer and Harvick were fourth and fifth with 165 and 155 points, respectively. In the Manufacturers' Championship, Chevrolet led with nine points, ahead of Ford in second place with six points. Toyota was in third with four points, and Dodge completed the top four with three points with thirty-five races left in the season.

The weekend started with Elliott Sadler winning the NASCAR XFINITY Series race holding off a hard charging Denny Hamlin. Sadler nearly coughed it up in the closing stages but was able to win his 12th career event.  Then came Sunday's Chevrolet Silverado 250 at Canadian Tire Motorsports Park which ended in controversy as John Hunter Nemechek and Cole Custer has a memorable finish that resulted in significant amount of contact and drag racing to the start-finish line. We will give our opinion on the finish and if NASCAR should have penalized either driver or both drivers for their actions.  That finish led to throwback weekend at Darlington Raceway and while the race was slow going it certainly had some entertaining features. Kevin Harvick dominated but a few bad pit stops cost him track position and cost him the victory. Martin Truex Jr was able to capitalize and win his 5th career NASCAR Sprint Cup Series victory and his 2nd of the 2016 season. Also, Tony Stewart made headlines, dumping Brian Scott under green flag conditions. We talk about the 2016 Bojangles Southern 500.  Plus we talk about Ryan Newman and Kyle Larson's penalty following the Southern 500 and how it will effect Newman and Larson going forward. Were the penalities too harsh? Should RCR appeal? Has NASCAR been consistant all season long with penalities?  And we'll take your phone calls at 917-889-8280!

On this episode of Talking in Circles we discuss the Cheez-It 355 at the Glen. Denny Hamlin won his 28th career NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race and the 1st at Watkins Glen International. Hamlin was able to use some strategy and a fast race car to stay ahead of the field and get to victory lane. It's his 1st win since the Daytona 500 in February.  It was a race that was filled with strategy. A lap 14 caution for debris spiced things up a little bit and made the race become a race of strategy.  Pit road timing lines were a big issue as several big named drivers got nailed on speeding penalties.  Also there was a lot of action during the race and at the end that produced several accidents including Martin Truex Jr and Kyle Larson getting tangeled up at the end of the event, costing them good finishes.  We'll discuss the racing on the road course and give our attaboys and disapointments.  Also we'll touch on Erik Jones' new ride for 2017.
