In the final installment of our interview, Jamie McMurray not-so-fondly remembers his time with Roush Racing, his victory in the 2010 Daytona 500 and how he wound up parting ways with team owner Chip Ganassi and the contentment it EVENTUALLY brought him. We then take a swing at the July 12, 2007 issue of NASCAR Scene. Jamie McMurray beats Kyle Busch to the checkered flag in a heart-pounding finish at Daytona, in a race that saw Joe Gibbs Racing teammates Tony Stewart and Denny Hamlin not playing nice with each other. Mother Nature does Boris Said dirty and a there's a feature on the new Roush Fenway Racing alliance. After a quick chat with the soon-to-be retired Chris Powell, president and general manager of Las Vegas Motor Speedway, Jamie McMurray tells about that miracle first Winston Cup win at Charlotte and driving as a substitute for the injured Sterling Marlin. He also talks about the mental side of the sport … and if anybody should be talking about being mental … it's the hosts of The Scene Vault Podcast. We then dig into the October 17, 2002 issue of Winston Cup Scene. Jamie McMurray wins the Winston Cup race at Charlotte … which was a HUGE shock. Jeff Burton wins the Busch Series race at Charlotte … which was anything BUT a shock. Jeff's mad about racing back to the caution and his Roush Racing teammate is mad about racing … period … while not being able to see out of his windshield. Finally … co-host Steve Waid INSISTS that there was NO WAY that the point system that was in place at the time was going to change. We start this week with a tribute to the late Bill Baumgardner, the BACE Motorsports team owner who won three consecutive Busch Series championships in 1995-97 with drivers Johnny Benson and Randy LaJoie. Then, in the first of what will be three installments of our interview, Jamie McMurray talks about the perception that he was afraid to race hard, getting hooked up with Winston Cup team owner Chip Ganassi and how he ended up filling in for Sterling Marlin late in the 2002 season. We then take a look at the July 23, 1998 issue of Winston Cup Scene. There's a massive series of stories in this issue dealing with recent injuries to drivers and what could be done about it safety-wise … and from the seriousness of that topic … we move on to the silliness of a Go Kart race with Buckshot Jones … and Tony Stewart. Dale Earnhardt Jr. is joined in the studio by former NASCAR racer and Driver Performance Manager for Chevrolet Racing Josh Wise. The two discuss Josh's post driving career, and his influential role in coaching NASCAR's top athletes. After moving into the stock car ranks as a champion dirt sprint car racer, Josh spent ten years moving through the NASCAR ranks before finding his calling to become a driver development coach and manager. Josh admits that though he was the first driver in Toyota's development program, he was ill-prepared for the world of fendered racing and feels he failed during his time behind the wheel in NASCAR. In 2016, he came to the realization that he was ready to end his pursuit of being a race car driver and wanted to move into a position to help other drivers unlock their full potential. Josh explains that after setting his sights on this goal, he struck up a conversation with Max Jones at Chip Ganassi Racing and pitched the concept to him. Max suggested he work with a young and upcoming racer in their ranks who needed help with focus, who just happened to be Kyle Larson. Wise Optimization hit the ground running with Larson, Jamie McMurray, Tyler Reddick and Brennan Poole and quickly grew from a single-man operation focusing on workout regimens to an all-encompassing driver overhaul program. Josh attended night school to earn a degree in psychology so he could help drivers with their lives away from the track, which he found to be a major key in growth potential. Today, the operation is a facet of Team Chevy and helps some of the most successful drivers in stock car racing hone their craft.21+ and present in North Carolina. Opt in req. 30 years ago, NASCAR ran the first Brickyard 400 at the storied Indianapolis Motor Speedway that featured the largest crowd to ever witness a NASCAR race. Today on DJD Reloaded, we relive iconic moments from one of NASCAR's Crown Jewels with a pair of iconic drivers. Dale Jarrett, a 2-time Brickyard winner, and the man behind the tradition of “kissing the bricks” calls in to share his stories. Plus, Jamie McMurray, a driver who won the Brickyard in 2010 amidst a historical season gives us his favorite memories from racing on the oval at Indy. And we'll even hear from IMS President, Doug Boles, on what this event means for the Speedway, and how this race has evolved since its inception in 1994.
Veteran crew chief Kevin "Bono" Manion sits down with Davey Segal (8:15) to discuss his illustrious career in NASCAR that has seen him work with close to 50 drivers, win multiple championships, crowned jewel races and currently with Rev Racing and Nick Sanchez in the Truck Series, where they already have two wins to their credit in 2024. Bono explains what makes Sanchez so good in qualifying, why the consistency the No. 2 team has showed, the stop/start nature of the Truck Series schedule and reflects on being in the sport for over two decades. He also dives into his upbringing in Massachusetts, who he started racing with, moving down south on a whim with Tommy Baldwin and the friends and racers that lived with the duo down in NC. Bono wound up winning in his first ever start as a crew chief, at Daytona of all places, with Dale Earnhardt Jr. as the driver. He reflects on that day and getting paired up with Martin Truex Jr. at Chance 2 Motorsports (which he was hand picked to help start), where they won back-to-back championships to begin his full-time crew chiefing career. Bono and MTJ then moved up to the Cup Series together before Jamie McMurray came into the picture. Remember that storybook 2010 season? Bono does too, but it wasn't all good, as he explains. He also touches on what made working at DEI so special, what working at so many different teams taught him as a crew chief, why he enjoys where he's at in the Truck Series with Spire/Rev, being the class clown of the team and pulling pranks on his people, expectations for the No. 2 team for the rest of 2024, what else he wants to accomplish in his NASCAR career and where the nickname "Bono" actually derived from. Papa Segal pays homage to Ernie Irvan and Davey discusses Austin Cindric's surprise Gateway win, NASCAR granting Kyle Larson a playoff waiver and looks ahead to Sonoma.

After finding his way into the racing world through the go-kart ranks in his hometown of Joplin, Missouri, Jamie began garnering attention as he found success racing late models at local tracks like Lebanon I-44, Bolivar Speedway, and I-70 Motorsports Park. Jamie explains that one of the interested parties was longtime NASCAR Truck team owner Mike Mittler, and after pairing up with him in 1999 he began a meteoric rise up the NASCAR ladder. Jamie speaks about the pressure he felt when he was called up to the Cup Series by Ganassi Racing to fill in for an injured Sterling Marlin in 2002. It was during this stint that Jamie made history by winning his first Cup event in just his second attempt, at the UAM-GM Quality 500 at Charlotte Motor Speedway, an upset victory that shocked the sport. Starting his Twitter account over a decade ago, 'Casm's following has grown from just a few NASCAR fans to almost 200,000, laughing with him along the way (and maybe at him a time or two). He recalls many belly-laughing stories, including when Brad Keselowski shouted him out on SportsCenter in 2012, Will Power's reaction when he realized who 'Casm was, tickling Carl Edwards' palm, his fake feud with Jamie McMurray, getting Jimmie Johnson to wear a custom romper with his face on it and plenty more. And does he really have a job title? The 2010 Daytona 500 was the first stock car race of the 2010 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series. The 52nd annual running of the Daytona 500, it was held on February 14, 2010, in Daytona Beach, Florida, at Daytona International Speedway, before a crowd of about 175,000 attendees. Earnhardt Ganassi Racing driver Jamie McMurray won the 208-lap race from the thirteenth position. Dale Earnhardt Jr. of Hendrick Motorsports finished in second, and Roush Fenway Racing's Greg Biffle came in third. Mark Martin, who had the pole position (the oldest pole winner in Daytona 500 history at 51 years and 27 days), led the opening four laps before he was passed by Kasey Kahne on lap five, before he retook it two laps later. The race lead changed 52 times amongst a then record-breaking 21 different drivers during the course of the race, with Kevin Harvick leading the most laps (41). It was twice stopped because a large pothole had developed between turns one and two, because of moisture, cold weather temperatures, and all the heavy cars scraping the tarmac surface, as they ran low to the ground for better aerodynamic efficiency. Harvick led on the 206th lap, until McMurray passed him a lap later. McMurray held it for the final lap to claim his first Daytona 500 victory, his second at Daytona International Speedway, and the fourth of his career. Because this was the first race of the season, McMurray led the Drivers' Championship with 195 points, followed by Earnhardt in second place who had 175 points and Biffle in third with 170 points. Clint Bowyer and Harvick were fourth and fifth with 165 and 155 points, respectively. In the Manufacturers' Championship, Chevrolet led with nine points, ahead of Ford in second place with six points. Toyota was in third with four points, and Dodge completed the top four with three points with thirty-five races left in the season.
