Joining the show this week is an experienced executive who has a history of driving brands to success. Please welcome to the show, Head of Development for Ashford Inc and CEO at Premier, a subsidiary of Ashford, Hector Sanchez!Hector sits down with Host Dan Ryan to share the lessons he has learned from his time in the hospitality industry. Hector dives into the importance of owning mistakes when they happen, the challenges of aligning on budget, and how to build teams that play to their members' strengths. Takeaways: Hospitality is the act of serving people and creating unique experiences that they can share with others. It plays a crucial role in creating memorable moments and fostering connections between individuals. Taking responsibility and providing a solution is crucial in resolving issues effectively, as it demonstrates accountability and ownership, unlike finger-pointing and avoiding responsibility. Ownership groups in the hotel industry typically do not bring various functions, such as project management, in-house. While some may handle design and project management internally, they often rely on external firms for expertise and assistance. As a newcomer to the hospitality industry, it's important to take note of the small details around you. Observing how other projects came to fruition and noting their nuances will help you ramp up your design knowledge. While having a holistic understanding of your industry is beneficial, it doesn't mean you need to be an expert in every discipline. Play to your strengths and build a team whose members fill in each other's gaps. The disconnect between budget and creativity in the hospitality industry can be a large challenge. Being mindful of budget constraints while fostering creativity is crucial for successful project execution. Quote of the Show:“To me, it's just about how you react to those issues? Do you just hide from them? Do you ignore the calls or do you rise up?” - Hector SanchezLinks: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/premier_design_to_completion LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/hector-a-sanchez-65799b7/ Website: https://www.premierpm.com/ Website: https://www.ashfordinc.com/ Shout Outs: 01:16 - Chris Green: https://www.linkedin.com/in/wchrisgreen/ 01:23 - Chesapeake Hospitality 01:25 - Remington Hotels: https://www.remingtonhospitality.com/ 09:31 - Bermanfalk: https://www.bermanfalk.com/ 11:38 - PEMEX: https://www.pemex.com/en/Paginas/default.aspx 12:18 - National Oilwell Varco: https://www.nov.com/ 12:30 - Schlumberger: https://www.slb.com/ 12:31 - Halliburton: https://www.halliburton.com/ 19:13 - Carla Niemann: https://www.linkedin.com/in/carla-niemann-rid-iida-81314a5/ 19:19 - Johannes Michalsky: https://www.linkedin.com/in/johannes-michalsky-80166b77/ 19:27 - Mike Funk: https://www.linkedin.com/in/funkmike/ 27:36 - Patrick Burke: https://www.linkedin.com/in/patrick-burke-aia-ncarb-3125748b/ 27:51 - Rex Tullius 33:20 - Mr C's Beverly Hills 33:22 - Hilton: https://www.hilton.com/en/ 33:27 - La Concha: https://www.laconcharesort.com/ 33:30 - Autograph Collection: https://autograph-hotels.marriott.com/ 33:32 - Le Pavillon Hotel: https://www.lepavillon.com/ 34:35 - Courtyard: https://courtyard.marriott.com/ 34:37 - Ritz-Carlton: https://www.ritzcarlton.com/ 35:41 - Barbara Carlson 39:15 - Renaissance Nashville 47:49 - University of Houston: https://www.uh.edu/ 47:52 - Texas Rangers: https://www.mlb.com/rangers 47:56 - Houston Astros: https://www.mlb.com/astros Ways to Tune In: Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/0A2XOJvb6mGqEPYJ5bilPX Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/defining-hospitality-podcast/id1573596386 Google Podcasts: https://podcasts.google.com/feed/aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuZGVmaW5pbmdob3NwaXRhbGl0eS5saXZlL2ZlZWQueG1s Amazon Music: https://music.amazon.com/podcasts/8c904932-90fa-41c3-813e-1cb8f3c42419
In this episode of InspectTech, Emilie's guest is Theo Young, the founder of Refined Inspection Services, an Evident Training Member. Theo is a second-generation nondestructive testing (NDT) inspector, so he learned early on what NDT stood for and what it was all about. For Theo, NDT is not just a career, it's instilled him with a mission: to teach the basic principles of NDT and make it accessible and affordable for anyone interested in making it their career. -- Refined Inspection Services was founded in 2018 by Theo Young with the objective of offering an NDT education to those who otherwise may not have the opportunity. Mr. Young began his NDT career in 2008, as a quality control technician for National Oilwell Varco. By 2015, Mr. Young had achieved numerous NDT certifications, as well as accredited certifications, such as the AWS Certified Welding Inspector and API 570 Pressure Piping Inspector. After working with many respected subject matter experts and leaders in NDT innovation, he was encouraged to obtain his ASNT Level III certifications, the highest certification level that an NDT professional can achieve. He now holds five ASNT Level III certifications. In 2019, after completing an instructor training program, he was offered an opportunity that was a dream come true: teaching alongside his mentors as an instructor for one of the most respected NDT schools in Texas. By opening Refined Inspection Services, Theo Young fulfilled a personal goal to increase access to NDT education. Through his business, he provides up-to-date NDT training to individuals, combining education and technology with practical experience to prepare them for a range of NDT certification levels.

Stock markets sold off this week as the yield on U.S. 10-year Treasurys briefly rose past 1.6%. Most of the damage came on Thursday, when the Nasdaq posting its biggest one-day loss in four months. Besides tech, cryptocurrencies (and crypto-proxy stocks) were the big losers. More on that below. Tech stocks have rebounded today, though the broader market struggled to gain traction. As of 2 p.m. on Friday, the S&P 500 (SP500) was down 1.5% for the week, with the Nasdaq (COMP) and Dow Industrials (DJI) off 1.1% and 3.6%, respectively. Winners & LosersMost movement came off earnings-related news, but the ‘reopening trade’ quietly continued. Cruise lines rallied, with Royal Caribbean (NYSE:RCL) adding 22% for the week. Norwegian Cruise Lines (NYSE:NCLH) gained 14% and Carnival (NYSE:CCL) 11%. Airlines also did well, with the U.S. Global JETS ETF (NYSEARCA:JETS) gaining 8% for the week. American Airlines (NASDAQ:AAL) was the best-performing U.S. airline, adding 18%, followed by United Airlines (NASDAQ:UAL) which gained 15%. JetBlue Airways (NASDAQ:JBLU) and Delta Air Lines (NYSE:DAL) are up about 10% each. Commodity prices rallied, with the exception of gold (XAUUSD:CUR), which dropped 3.7% this week. Among the biggest winners in energy were Marathon Oil (NYSE:MRO), whose shares gained 24% and National Oilwell Varco (NYSE:NOV), which added 13%. Deere & Co. (NYSE:DE) shares also had a strong week, adding 16%. Bond-related ETFs were unsurprisingly among the losers: BlackRock's iShares iBoxx Investment Grade Corporate Bond ETF (NYSEARCA:LQD) fell to a nine-month low yesterday. The iShares 20+ Year Treasury Bond ETF (NASDAQ:TLT) is down about 4.6% this week and the iShares 7-10 Year Treasury Bond ETF (NASDAQ:IEF) has given up about 2%. Salesforce (NYSE:CRM) slipped after the company provided a downside profit forecast on its fourth-quarter earnings and is off 6.5% for the week. Cryptocurrencies had an awful week even as Coinbase (COINB) filed for its IPO. Bitcoin (BTC-USD) was off about 14%. Crypto-proxies predictably went along, with Riot Blockchain (NASDAQ:RIOT) dropping by 27% and Grayscale Bitcoin Trust (GBTC) declining 14%. What Caught Our Eye(s) This WeekKim: GameStop (NYSE:GME), part deux. Why it happened? Brad: Workhorse Group (NASDAQ:WKHS) short-sellers vindicated in U.S. Postal Service electric vehicle award; Stephen: Twitter (NYSE:TWTR) investor day update; Nat: Davey Day-Trader moves markets again, this time Churchill Capital Corp (NYSE:CCIV). Big Picture Stocks started the week strongly before coming up for air on Friday. Concerns over rising coronavirus cases in China coupled with disappointing earnings reports from IBM (NYSE:IBM) and Intel (NASDAQ:INTC) weighed on risk assets early Friday. Major indexes trimmed losses later in today’s trading session and finished green for the week. Winners & Losers Other than Bernie Sanders memes, many winners are anticipated beneficiaries of the Biden administration’s climate initiatives. Solar companies such as Sunpower (NASDAQ:SPWR), Enphase Energy (NASDAQ:ENPH), and Canadian Solar (NASDAQ:CSIQ) rallied. Polar Power (NASDAQ:POLA) was one of the biggest winners, with its shares gaining 81% this week. U.S. automakers Ford (NYSE:F) and General Motors (NYSE:GM) rallied early in the week on their electrical vehicle initiatives before giving up some gains Friday. Home builders performed well, with shares of D.R. Horton (NYSE:DHI) and Pulte Homes (NYSE:PHM) adding double digit percentages. Financials and energy names were among the losers. The Financial Select Sector SPDR ETF (NYSEARCA:XLF) is down about 3% with its energy equivalent (NYSEARCA:XLE) dropping 5%. Oil producers ConocoPhillips (NYSE:COP), EOG Resources (NYSE:EOG), National Oilwell Varco (NYSE:NOV) are down double digits. Shares of Haliburton gave up 11% week-over-week. If you work in oil and gas, you know the name National Oilwell Varco (NOV). They are often referred to as the “toolbox of the industry,” and for good reason. With all of the equipment and specialty tools they make, and the vast number of service technicians they send to sites around the world, you’re likely to see more than a little of their trademark red around the oilfield. NOV has grown by capturing market share with innovative technology and acquisitions of several of the smaller players in the industry. With all that growth, you would think their safety record would be one of the worst in the industry, when they actually have one of the best. In our discussion with NOV’s Chief Marketing Officer David Reid andChief Health Safety and Environment Officer Bill Crabbe, we learned that their secret comes from trusting and respecting their employees to make the right decisions when if comes to safety, and creating a family culture that encourages employees to look out for each other.
