NOTE: This is part two of a two-part episode. To hear both parts right now and without ads, become a Patreon supporter of The War on Cars. In part two of our deep dive on John Forester and his 1976 book Effective Cycling, we take a look at the paltry data and research underpinning the alleged safety benefits of vehicular cycling and the long-term impact Forester had on cycling for transportation in the United States. Even though cities such as New York started building protected bicycle lanes in earnest in the late 2000s and early 2010s — and even though quality bike infrastructure has existed in places such as Davis, California for decades — John Forester's legacy continued well into the 21st century, with federal guides such as AASHTO's "Green Book" discouraging or even prohibiting things such as parking-protected bikeways until as recently as 2018. On top of that, many of Forester's disciples held positions atop major advocacy organizations and city bike planning departments for years, and used their influence to prevent the construction of protected bike lanes. In a lot of ways, we're still pedaling in the world John Forester created. This episode was sponsored by Bull Moose Softgoods and Cleverhood. Listen to the episode for the latest discount codes. The future of fashion is small, ethical, and circular. The problem right now? Big businesses control the supply chain, making it really hard for small brands and designers to succeed. FABRIC is working to change that by building a fully circular supply chain here in the United States, powered by many, many small businesses. In this episode, Amanda is joined by Angela Johnson, co-founder of FABRIC. This episode discusses the following:Angela's experiences as a designer, both at the beginning of her career, and as she started her own brand. We'll get a little nostalgic with some conversation about her time working at X-Girl, an iconic 90s brand founded by Kim Gordon (of Sonic Youth) and Daisy von Furth. And oh yeah, we're also going to talk about Days of Our Lives.Angela will explain how everything she learned working in the garment industry in LA (along with her loyalty to her home state of Arizona) led her to create a fashion incubator in Tempe, Arizona. We will also hear more about the vision for the Eco Parc, a fully circular fashion manufacturing hub and what it will take to bring that to life. And we will round that all out by talking about how important it is to keep up this work, even on the days when it is really hard.Find FABRIC on IG: @fabrictempeAnd HEY! NOTE: This is part one of a two-part episode. To hear both parts right now and without ads, become a Patreon supporter of The War on Cars. "Cyclists fare best when they act and are treated as drivers of vehicles." That quote is the core philosophy of John Forester, the father of vehicular cycling. Forester, who died in 2020, was a major figure in the the world of cycling advocacy and transportation policy, and his influence shaped street design and bicycle safety in the United States for decades. We take a deep dive into Forester's 1976 book, Effective Cycling. Part guidebook, part encyclopedia, part polemic, Effective Cycling explains why cyclists should not be afraid to ride not just in traffic, but as traffic. Throughout the book, Forester dismisses anyone who might be afraid of taking the lane with fast-moving cars and trucks as suffering from what he calls the "cyclist inferiority complex" and asserts that only a strict adherence to the principles of vehicular cycling can keep everyone safe. Who was John Forester? What is vehicular cycling? Why are we talking about a book that was published almost fifty years ago? It's all here in this mega episode. Go-to gratitude expert Kelly Browne addresses the art of forgiveness and making amends for the sake of self-care and inner calmness in her new book, 101 Ways to Create Mindful Forgiveness: A Heart-Healing Guide to Forgiveness, Apologies, and Mindful Tools for Peace. Browne shares personal stories, priceless practical guidance, journal prompts and therapeutic tools to help readers navigate a wide spectrum of difficult scenarios and freely choose to move forward in peace. “Holding on to events that hurt us continues to cause us pain, dimming the light of our spirit and leaving us susceptible to illness,” Browne writes in the book's introduction. A survivor of personal trauma, Browne's insights are meaningful and heartfelt, as she covers both personal and professional relationships in her book, teaching readers: - How to Apologize Using the 6 Rs - Electronic Apologies: Text, Emojis and Emailed Apologies - The Three Faces of an Apology - Meaningful Apologetic Words and Notes - Moving Forward Toward Forgiveness - The Forgiveness Thesaurus - Releasing Grudges - Choosing Compassion Over Revenge - Overcoming Trauma - And much more With cover praise from Reverend Canon Mpho Tutu van Furth, the book includes inspiration from The Book of Forgiving, which Tutu co-wrote with her father, Nobel Peace Prize recipient Archbishop Desmond Tutu — sharing wisdom that humanity desperately needs for healing the racial divides in current times. “In a world that can feel divided and disconnected, everyone wants a quick fix to solve their personal issues,” Browne added. “It's not easy to just ‘get over' something that has hurt us deeply. But with the right mindfulness tools, we can enjoy a daily lifestyle of personal awareness and wellness.” About the Author Trauma survivor Kelly Browne evacuated her parents during the SoCalGas Aliso Canyon Blowout over Los Angeles — the worst environmental gas disaster in U.S. history. As her mother spiraled into a fatal cancer diagnosis from the toxic exposure, Browne's daughter was thrown from a horse at an unlicensed equestrian camp, breaking her neck. Browne sought trauma therapy for herself and family, digging deep to embrace the tools she teaches in this book, forging ahead with tenacity, acceptance, forgiveness, and navigating a way to find her personal peace amidst the pain. Browne is a well-known gratitude expert on thank-you notes for adults and children. She is the author of the bestselling series in its category: 101 Ways to Say Thank You: Notes of Gratitude for All Occasions (Sterling 2008, 2nd edition, 2015); 101 Ways to Say Thank You! On May 27, 1922, in Furth, Germany, a child was born who would grow up to be one of, if not the most important diplomats in the history of the planet. Heinz Alfred Kissinger, who today turns 99 years old, an immigrant who would grow up to be an American citizen, who would get America, his adopted land, out of one of the most protracted, divisive, wars in our history, who would also open Communist China from diplomatic Isolation, who would broker peace in the Middle East that would lead to the successes of Jimmy Carter in the late 1970's, who would also begin a process that would thaw the Cold War with the Soviet Union, and who after leaving office would provide guidance that would help direct American Foreign Policy for the next half century and counting. It can be said without hesitation that Dr. Henry Kissinger has led a truly amazing an inspirational life. If Richard Nixon should be considered one of the greatest leaders our country has ever produced their is no question that Dr. Henry Kissinger deserves an enormous amount of credit for skillfully carrying out the policy that made it all possible. Kissinger's impact on the world is incalculable. We here at "Bridging the Political Gap" think its high time that someone recognizes both men for their roles in making a safer world and we are thankful that Henry Kissinger is still living to see us say thank you. In this special edition of our show we celebrate the life, the impact, and the wisdom of Dr. Henry Kissinger, America's National Living Treasure and we wish Dr. Kissinger a happy birthday and many, many more moments in which we can share his wise, and thoughtful advice.

In this episode, we travel deep to the heart of Texas and talk to Josh and Jens, two supporters who are both from Stuttgart - one from Germany and one from America (?!) who head the VfB Central Texas supporters group! We first dive into their VfB origin stories before finding out what the soccer, MLS, and Bundesliga scene is like in the middle of Texas. Then, in Part One we get Josh and Jens' thoughts on the first half of the season before jumping into the disappointing 0:0 draw at Furth. Along the way, we take a look at the lineup, give some love to Stenzel, Kempf, and Müller, and celebrate the return of Sasa while at the same time giving some imaginary game balls to two defenders for helping the club at least maintain a point on the road. In Part Two, not only do we discuss the upcoming home match versus Leipzig, Josh and Jens help, in our newest segment, to "Talk Travis off the Ledge" with their positivity regarding not only the Leipzig match but the season as a whole! In Part Three, friend of the show Matt joins us to answer the most listener questions WE'VE EVER HAD (um ... four) as we both try to convince everyone (and ourselves) to "trust the process." In Part Four we predict the upcoming Bundesliga match day 19 results that matter to VfB before ending by discussing "What we Learned" about Sasa's gentlemanly behavior and how Travis, Matt, and Sasa aren't that different after all. Part 1 & 2 with Josh and Jens: 0:00-39:28 Part 3 & 4 with Matt: 39:38-finish.
