In this episode, I'm joined by the AMAZING Amanda Heal who will be sharing a bit of her journey as someone who was born blind. We'll also be talking all about her experience keynote speaking, as well as some of the key themes she teaches, including courage and resilience. Amanda is a resilience expert with an extraordinary life story. She survived being born 14 weeks premature in the 70s when such tiny babies were not deemed viable. She was so small, her father could hold her in his hand. The oxygen that kept her alive at birth damaged her eyes, leaving her totally blind. Despite this, Amanda has continued to surprise people with her professional and personal achievements. After graduating with Honours in Law from the Australian National University, she embarked on a 17-year legal career. In her spare time, she climbed to an altitude of 10,000 feet in Nepal and conquered her phobia of getting lost to travel independently, both within Australia and overseas. In her keynote talks, Amanda shares her five keys to increasing resilience by building courage. When she's not speaking, she's a podcaster and the author of multiple books, the latest being Seeing By Vision, Not By Sight. LIVE BY FAITHKEY VERSE: FOR WE WALK BY FAITH, NOT BY SIGHT. 2 CORINTHIANS 5:7
What does it mean to "walk by faith, not by sight"? We have heard that scripture before, but what does it actually mean? How do we apply that scripture to our daily lives for our benefit? Let's see what the Word of God has to tell us. (Music Intro: "Here We Are" by Don Moen)

Mark 5:21-3421 When Jesus had again crossed over by boat to the other side of the lake, a large crowd gathered around him while he was by the lake.22 Then one of the synagogue leaders, named Jairus, came, and when he saw Jesus, he fell at his feet.23 He pleaded earnestly with him, “My little daughter is dying. Please come and put your hands on her so that she will be healed and live.”24 So Jesus went with him.A large crowd followed and pressed around him.25 And a woman was there who had been subject to bleeding for twelve years.26 She had suffered a great deal under the care of many doctors and had spent all she had, yet instead of getting better she grew worse.27 When she heard about Jesus, she came up behind him in the crowd and touched his cloak,28 because she thought, “If I just touch his clothes, I will be healed.”29 Immediately her bleeding stopped and she felt in her body that she was freed from her suffering.30 At once Jesus realized that power had gone out from him. He turned around in the crowd and asked, “Who touched my clothes?”31 “You see the people crowding against you,” his disciples answered, “and yet you can ask, ‘Who touched me?' ”32 But Jesus kept looking around to see who had done it.33 Then the woman, knowing what had happened to her, came and fell at his feet and, trembling with fear, told him the whole truth.34 He said to her, “Daughter, your faith has healed you. Go in peace and be freed from your suffering.” Living Faith We shall live by faith, not by sight The desperation of a sick woman Physical Deterioration Social Isolation Financial Destitution Spiritual Deprivation The action of her faith Internal Response External Response The compassion of Jesus Healing and Restoration Our Actions of Faith
2 Corinthians 5:5-7 5 Now the one who has fashioned us for this very purpose is God, who has given us the Spirit as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come. 6 Therefore we are always confident and know that as long as we are at home in the body we are away from the Lord.7 For we live by faith, not by sight. "We live by faith, not by sight."Our Identity: Faith defines who we are Romans 3:22 "This righteousness is given through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe."Our Quality: Faith determines how we are Romans 1: 17 "The righteous shall live by faithfulness." Our Duty: Faith directs what we do Galatians 5:7 The only thing that counts is faith expressing itself through love. Ephesians 2:8, 10 For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith...we are God's handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.
As the science vs. faith battle wages to determine who is right and what is real, what each can miss in this philosophical tournament is the opportunity to lift up their eyes and see beyond the coliseum that hosts it - and walk outside, leaving the weapons and armor of the game behind and embracing the search for being. Science creates rules that govern and limit how we see. Faith, a term which once meant something much more, finds itself reduced by modern Western thought to nothing more than another set of rules, creeds, and systematic theology - a flattened version of what it really is. Faith, in its essence, is not a set of rules. Faith is the confidence in what we hope for and the assurance of what we do not see. Hebrews 11:1 Faith is knowing that the deepest, truest desires within us are real. This means that our longing for love, transcendence, meaning, purpose, acceptance, and connection to the divine is not an unrealistic outlook. Faith gives us confidence that these desires are the most genuine thing about us. And faith is the assurance that these longings, which cannot be seen with the eyes of objective consciousness, can be trusted to lead us to their fulfillment. And they can be trusted precisely because the divine, transcendent God who created us planted these inherent desires within us. He designed us with these invisible desires to seek Him so that he can fulfill them all in communion with him. And all we have to do is to see this truth in our spirit, accepting it by faith. Without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him. Story of failure: Losing our keys on the beach in Cape Cod and being stranded for two days.Amanda Heal is from Canberra, Australia and is a resilience speaker and author of Seeing By Vision, Not By Sight. Amanda helps leaders and their teams overcome uncertainty and increase resilience by building their courage. She's also scaled a 10,000 foot mountain. And by the way she's blind. In today's episode, Amanda talks about:- being born premature at 26 weeks and weight 1.9 ounces- because she was so small, they gave her too much oxygen and it caused blindness- her parents lobbied the government to allow her in public school- being made redundant that started her journey- climbing in Nepal with a Paralympic athlete, white water rafting, riding an elephant, and petting a baby rhino- lots of training before climbing 10,000 feet- the hardest part of the climb being the altitude- why Kenyan runners do so well- the most unpolluted air she has ever experienced- dancing around in circles on top of the mountain- the best thing about being blind and why it's her superpower- her life's purpose of inspiring and encouraging others- John Maxwell being a mentor to her- Jesus Christ being a mentor to her- story of taking a photo with John Maxwell and getting a one-armed hug by John- always being raised with a Christian background and when it changed at a healing service- worship songs only being three lines long- being prayed for sight but receiving Jesus instead- Jesus being her CEO- being laid off from her legal career after a lengthy career- having to apply for a job that she already held- not being truly happy in her job but discerning her life purpose- living out what God created her to do- excess to requirements and not needed anymore- hearing Nick Voyachik speak- why she used to get upset when people called her inspiring and why that changed- what other people think of her has nothing to do with me- it's ok for other people to have thoughts different from you- reaching out to Nick via email- the failure that helped changed her response and her life- why she used to cry and pray a lot, and let herself be sad- the thing that keeps her life on track- how can I do that better or how can I learn from this?- wanting to get paid speaking work and why that scares her- questioning herself on whether she's worthy or not- I told you you'd get here- goals of keynotes, international travel, holidays and good income- coming off being paid well as a lawyer and asking how much do I really need that gadget?- the blessing of having her income decrease- not realizing she was paying for two gym memberships- why she wants to support her mother in the comfort she would like- her silent business partner- taking her mom on a holiday in luxury- going on their first cruise for her mom's 90th birthday- wanting to write a book on courage- You Don't Need Sight, You Just Need Vision- when God told her to stop messing around and to speak- Seeing by Vision, Not by Sight------------www.amandaheal.com.auwww.purposevisionfuture.comTwitter - @amanda_healLinkedIn - Amanda Heal------------
Series: Walk By Faith and Not By Sight
1) Walk By Faith, Not By Sight is the first sermon is Pastor Keith's sermon series, Abraham's Example Genesis 12:1-9
When we Walk by Faith and Not By Sight we leave the world of appearances and move more in step with what we are creating in our own wonderful human imagination. "Let us examine this thought. In his 2nd letter to the Corinthians Paul says: "We walk by faith and not by sight." When we walk by sight, we know our way by objects that the eye sees. But Paul tells us to order our life by objects seen only in the imagination. In other words, when you know where you want to go and what you want to be, you are told not to rearrange your physical structure, but to walk by faith, viewing only the rearranged structure of your mind. And if you will remain faithful to that state of consciousness, what is seen only in your imagination will objectify itself in your world." Zacharias Ursinus said, "The doctrine of the church is the entire and uncorrupted doctrine of the law and gospel concerning the true God, together with his will, works, and worship." How do we understand words like "Gospel" or "Law"? Narrowly, the Gospel tells us what Christ has done for us (indicative). But broadly, the Gospel can exhort (imperative) and even threaten (Canons of Dort, 5.14). The Law can refer to the Law of Moses, broadly, or to the moral law more narrowly. But of what use is the Law for those who are united to Christ? If, in Christ, we are justified, adopted, and sanctified - if our 'old self' was crucified and we are raised with Christ - of what use can the law be? Does the law merely function negatively, showing us our sinfulness and inability, or does the Holy Spirit empower us to follow God's commands (though imperfectly)? In this episode, Pastors Zac and Brandon give an introduction to these questions. Mighty Blue On The Appalachian Trail: The Ultimate Mid-Life Crisis
Curt Ebert was the pastor in his local church when the call came to hike the Appalachian Trail. The remarkable circumstances surrounding that call are introduced in this conversation with Steve. Curt had little hiking experience and, though they were a family who enjoyed the open air and had gone on day hikes on the Appalachian Trail, his decision was, for many reasons, somewhat unusual. Curt's wife was able to join him for the first 50 miles of the trail, then shared the 100 Mile Wilderness with him. Katahdin looms in the distance behind them. While his children remained at home, they were able to visit and support him on his journey. Here they are at the 1500 mile mark. Steve's intellectual curiosity and Curt's unwavering faith make for an absorbing conversation. If you'd like to learn more about Curt or contact him, he can be found on Facebook, at 2Corinthians57, on YouTube at Not By Sight, and on Instagram at notby_sight. Don't forget to visit our sponsor, Trailtopia.com and, while you're at it, why not see if there's anything you fancy on the Mighty Blue Merch Store.
