Being creative doesn't mean you have to be a classically trained musician or a famous artist. Creativity is all about tackling a project in a unique way that works for you. This is especially true in podcasting. Welcome to Should I Start A Podcast, I'm Ronsley Vaz. Each week, with the help of a star-studded entrepreneurial guest lineup, we explore why you should start a podcast, build an audience, and how to keep them hungry for more. If you're thinking about starting a podcast or simply looking for a better way to get your message out to your audience, then this is the podcast for you. In this episode, I sat down with the one and only Srivinas Rao. Srinivas is the host of the popular podcast, The Unmistakable Creative, where he's interviewed hundreds of amazing guests. He's had legends like Tim Ferriss, Simon Sinek, and Seth Godin on his show, so he knows a thing or two about interviewing. He's also the author of the book An Audience of One: Reclaiming Creativity for Its Own Sake. Podcasting isn't his only media. He's even recently appeared on the smash hit BBC show Indian Matchmaking. I asked Srinivas about his definition of creativity, and he gave me quite the answer. He definitely looks at podcasting, and the world, a bit differently than others I've talked to. His unique perspective on building an audience and producing a show is invaluable for newbies and seasoned pros alike. We get into all sorts of helpful topics in this conversation, like finding your motivation in more than just monetary sources. He gives me some insight into his daily routine that hasn't changed in over ten years. And we chat about why loyalty always outvalues reach. You don't want to miss this one. Other great takeaways from this episode: The balancing act between marketing and creation Srinivas's daily routine The definition of creativity Why editing his podcast himself for the first five years was invaluable. The importance of context Why not everyone should start a podcast Be selective about who's feedback you value Why you should never put your guests on a pedestal Loyalty vs. Reach Links & Resources: Unmistakable Creative Srinivas on LinkedIn An Audience of One: Reclaiming Creativity for Its Own Sake How to Build an Audience of 1,000 True Fans in a Noisy World Srinivas Rao's Tedx Talk
In today’s episode, we have my friend Srini Rao, who is the author of the Wall Street Journal best-selling book called the Art of Being Unmistakeable. He is also the host and founder of the Unmistakable Creative podcast where he has interviewed at least 700 people ranging from bank robbers to billionaires and including high profile guests like Tim Ferris and Seth Godin. One thing I’m sure you will notice from this conversation is this raw and untamed spirit that lives inside Srini. He has this speed of light voice and a presence that is bigger than life itself. He is going to take you on a ride during this episode. We talk about our shared belief that nothing really matters, the success, titles, etc. but ultimately what we are all seeking is more time with the people that matter to us and doing the things that bring us joy. “Nothing matters. That’s the key to unlocking the handcuffs that keep us imprisoned in worry, self doubt, fear, and disbelief.” ~ Srinivas Rao If you want to write a book, share your voice, and live your life on your terms. If you want to feel free and to create a legacy you love. This is the conversation for you. I’d love to hear what you think of this conversation. After hearing Srivinas Rao on Chase Jarvis' podcast - I decided that I needed to read his book, "An Audience of One: Reclaiming Creativity for Its Own Sake". Based on conversation we'd had, I knew it would resonate with my friend Peter Scattini as much as it would for me. I proposed that we read the book and then sit down on the podcast to discuss - what transpired was a three hour deep dive inspired by the ideas in Rao's book. This is that conversation.
We have spent the last several weeks exploring how to design memorable moments for our customers and communities, our audiences and even our families. But how do we design a life of wonder for ourselves? How do we juggle our own creative calling with the needs of our clients and communities? Is there a way to approach marketing as a craft, making it part of our path to mastery? How do we realize our best creative selves, pursuing mastery and meaning in every aspect of our lives? Today, Jeffrey explores the creative process with Srinivas Rao, the founder and host of The Unmistakable Creative Podcast and author of the recently released Audience of One: Reclaiming Creativity for Its Own Sake, and Marty Neumeier, Director of CEO Branding at Liquid Agency and author of several books, including the forthcoming business thriller SCRAMBLE: How Agile Strategy Can Build Epic Brands in Record Time. Srinivas and Marty explain how they make decisions about which projects to take on, discussing the tension between what they have been called to create and market demands. They address the significance of ongoing reflection and self-awareness in carving a path of personal and professional mastery and offer insight around putting your imprint or signature on any project you take on, learning best practices—and then challenging them. Srinivas and Marty also describe how they measure the value of their own work, seeking self-mastery rather than obsessing over marketing metrics. Perhaps you want to bring more magic into the world in the form of an animated film or video game. Inevitably, such a significant undertaking will face big challenges. What gives filmmakers and game designers the drive to persist over the years it takes to complete such substantial projects—when there is no guarantee or reward or recognition? Today, Jeffrey goes behind-the-scenes of wonder-making with filmmaker, animator, director and producer Mark Osborne, whose film The Little Prince received France’s prestigious César Award for Best Animated Film, and game designer, educator and Game Design Workshop author Tracy Fullerton, who serves as Director of the USC Games Program and Professor and Chair of the Interactive Media & Games Division of the USC School of Cinematic Arts. Mark and Tracy explore the collaborative nature of the work they do, explaining how their respective teams foster curiosity and generate unexpected ideas via play, affording special attention to craft and detail along the way. Mark describes his commitment to doing justice to The Little Prince, and Tracy offers insight around the personal connection her ‘book club’ developed with the award-winning Walden, a game. Tracy and Mark share their favorite elements of wonder in The Little Prince and Walden, discussing the painstaking effort involved in taking our breath away. Listen in to understand how their work brings Thoreau and Saint-Exupéry’s themes into the 21st century and learn how to keep your own team inspired and agile by way of an open, inclusive work culture. Srini Rao (@unmistakableCEO) is host of the Unmistakable Creative podcast, and author of the new book, Audience of One: Reclaiming Creativity for Its Own Sake. In Audience of One, Srini gives you the tools and encouragement you need to stop focusing on external validation, and to reconnect with your creative spark. In a world where you can publish your creative work to more people than ever, it's easy to lose sight of why we create. If you're dead set on your work reaching a lot of people, ironically, you'll lose touch with that special something that makes your work resonate with others in the first place. In this conversation, we'll talk about: How do you follow up a success to reconnect with "Creativity for Its Own Sake?" We'll hear about how Srini's self-published book hit the Wall Street Journal bestseller list, and we'll hear about how he has struggled to reconnect with the true source of creative work that resonates with others. How do you ask a question that gets right to a great story. Srini asks great questions on his podcast, The Unmistakable Creative – in fact, I was on there recently, and he got stories out of me that I had never told before. So I loved digging into his questioning style. His thoughts on this could be as useful for a first date as they are for a podcast interview. What has Srini learned from hosting more than 700 podcast interviews? He'll break down the best tips and ways of thinking that he's gleaned from creators, bank robbers, drug dealers, performance psychologists, and more. Love Your Work is now fully listener-supported! It’s a neat little paradox we live in as artists, isn’t it? Our job is to stay focused on creating solely from our vision, and yet, we can’t help it . . . sometimes we have to look up to see if anyone else is paying attention. Srini Rao, the host and founder of The Unmistakable Creative Podcast, has a lot of great wisdom on this topic as someone who has interviewed over 700 highly creative people and who just published his latest book, “Audience of One: Reclaiming Creativity for Its Own Sake.” Srini talks about finding validation in your work, surfing as a creative practice, dating as a self-proclaimed B-List Celebrity and answers the question, “Which should take precedence: morning sex or your writing habit?”Click here to learn more about the Performers & Creators Lab >>About Your Host, Holly ShawHolly Shaw, CHT is a performance coach, creativity researcher and stand up comedian.
