Send us a textThere's a new jam band rolling into town, although the members have been playing locally for years. This new band is calling themselves KC36 Orange Sunshine Band (shortened from KC36 and the Orange Sunshine Band). The name is a reference to the disco-funk group KC and the Sunshine Band, as well as to the strains of marijuana known as the KC36 and the Orange Sunshine. The band's lineup consists of guitarist Doug Diminico (a core member and leader of Smooth Money Gesture), mandolinist Dave Pullins (a core member of NoGo Gilbillies), drummer Larry Nivissimo, saxophonist Bruce Lish, and bassist John Heiland. Nivissimo, Lish, and Heiland have frequently collaborated for over three decades, also currently playing together in the Grateful Dead tribute group AoxomoxoA.Heiland grew up in Chicago, surrounded by “upriver Mississippi bass and blues.” He started learning basic blues when he got his first guitar, but he didn't start performing until he moved to Colorado in 1991. He lived next door to professional musicians, who heard him play more at that time, and he started playing bluegrass at Ward's Millsite Inn, where other bluegrass musicians welcomed him in weekly Saturday night jams. He joined his first band, the Sugarloaf String Band, shortly after, connecting with similar groups such as Yonder Mountain String Band and Leftover Salmon.During his time in Sugarloaf String Band, he went on the road with Shanti Groove, a jam grass group that also included Nivissimo and Lish in the lineup. After Sugarloaf dissolved as a group, member Ryan Jones (who has since worked with Galactic and is now the production manager of the New Orleans live music venue Tipitina's) sold Heiland his bass, which he had played in college. That started Heiland's trajectory as a bass player, forming bands with Nivissimo and Lish such as Fat Rabbit and the Funkytonk Heroes. After Funkytonk Heroes, they formed another group, Seeing Stars Band, which has since morphed into AoxomoxoA. Now, to fulfill a birthday wish from Lish, the three musicians have brought in Pullins and Diminico to form yet another group, KC36 Orange Sunshine Band. Grateful Dead's 1982 Show Highlights and Unpopular TunesLarry Mishkin, introduces a Grateful Dead show from August 28th, 1982, featuring an opener where Jerry Garcia stumbles over lyrics. Larry shares insights into the band's performance, suggesting they might have been dosed that day. He discusses the history of the Grateful Dead at Woodstock, why they were omitted from the film, and a song called "Keep Your Day Job," disliked by fans and dropped from their repertoire. Larry contrasts it with the successful breakout of "West LA Fadeaway" that night, highlighting the unique way the Grateful Dead introduced and refined songs in their concerts.Produced by PodConx  Deadhead Cannabis Show - https://podconx.com/podcasts/deadhead-cannabis-showLarry Mishkin - https://podconx.com/guests/larry-mishkinRob Hunt - https://podconx.com/guests/rob-huntJay Blakesberg - https://podconx.com/guests/jay-blakesbergRecorded on Squadcast INTRO:               Bertha                           Track No. 1                           3:16 – 4:46                            Great opener, as always.  One month after my first show and Jerry still can't remember the words.  So instead we focus on the jam.  He may fall short in lyrics but his playing is electric.  Story is that the band was supposedly dosed that day and the comments reflect that the band was “ON”. SHOW #1:          I Used To Love Her But It's All Over Now                           Track No. 7                           1:05 – 2:22                            It's All Over Now" is a song written by Bobby Womack and his sister-in-law Shirley Womack.[1] It was first released by The Valentinos, featuring Bobby Womack, in 1964. The Rolling Stones heard it on its release and quickly recorded a cover version, which became their first number-one hit in the United Kingdom, in July 1964.                         The Rolling Stones' version of "It's All Over Now" is the most famous version of the song. It was first released as a single in the UK, where it peaked at number 1 on the UK Singles Chart, giving the Rolling Stones their first number one hit.[5] It was the band's third single released in America, and stayed in the Billboard Hot 100 for ten weeks, peaking at number 26. Months later it appeared on their second American album 12 X 5. The song was a big hit in Europe and was part of the band's live set in the 1960s. Cash Box described it as a "contagious cover of the Valentinos' click" and "an infectious thumper that should head right for chartsville.”                         Covered by almost everybody in the music industry from the Stones to Ry Cooder to Nils Lofgren, Wide Spread Panic, Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers and even Molly Hatchet (Flirtin With Disaster)                         Covered by the Dead 154 times with Bobby singing.                        Frist on September 6, 1969  - Family Dog at the Great Hightway                        Last on July 2, 2995 – Deer Creek SHOW #2:       Day Job                        Track No. 10                        2:52 – 4:05                         First time played in concert.  Second set openerEventually played 57 times                        Last time on April 4, 1986 at Hartford Civic Center                         Per Robert Hunter in “A Box of Rain” collection of his lyrics, “this song was dropped from the Grateful Dead repertoire at the request of the fans. Seriously”  First song ever ‘rejected' by the Deadheads!  And the band listened to them and stopped playing it!                                But WHY was it so universally unpoplular?     “a lot of people thought it was the band making fun of/scolding deadheads who spent all their time following around the band. Hunter kind of hinted at that at one point in an interview I think.” “Hippies don't work” “It sucks” There are a few fans who liked the jamming or could relate to the song, but overall, NOPE.            SHOW #3:          West LA Fadeaway                           Track No. 12                           1:08 – 2:35                            Breakout version of this song, along with Day Job.  Five years later In The Dark was released with Wet LA on there, but Day Job did not make the cut.                                                     Dead would play this song 141 times in concert                           Last was June 30, 1995 at Three Rivers Stadium in Pittsburgh                            Always a fan favorite, great music, fun lyrics (only Hunter could work “copasetic” into song lyrics)  SHOW #4:          Playin' In The Band                           Track No. 14                           1:50 – 3:10                            Great version, very upbeat (a dosed band?) and sharp, Bobby right there with his inflection on PPPPLyaing in the BAAAnd, very sharp.  I like this clip because it shows the transition from the hard charging opening of the song into a more mellow sound that signifies the jumping off point for the band  into a Playin jam that could go anywhere.  In this case, almost 20 minutes before segueing into Drums>Space>The Wheel>The Other One>Truckin'>Black Peter>Playin Reprise.  What an amazing run of music.  Great tunes, great jamming, outside in Oregon, what else could a Head ask for?  Some clean Orange Sunshine or whatever the band was on!  OUTRO:              Dupree's Diamond Blues                           Track No. 20                           1:05 – 2:24                            This song was written by Hunter/GarciaIt appeared on the Dead's third album, Aoxomaxoa (released June 20, 1969).                           First played on January 24, 1969 at the Avalon Ballroom                           Last played on October 13, 1994 at MSG                           Played a total of 83 times.                            "Dupree's Diamond Blues" is based on an American folk song titled "Frankie Dupree," which was based on a real historical figure named Frank Dupree.According to In The Pine: Selected Kentucky Folksongs, Dupree tried robbing a diamond wedding ring from a jewelry store in Atlanta, Georgia, in 1921. He intended to give the ring to his girlfriend Betty. When a police officer showed up, Dupree shot him dead. He then fled to Chicago where he killed another officer and wounded others.Authorities eventually apprehended Dupree while he was getting his mail. They shipped him back to Atlanta where he was executed on September 1, 1922. Giggles:  The term "jelly roll" was once common African American slang for a woman's genitalia. The great ragtime pianist Jelly Roll Morton took his name from that very meaning. In 1924, Morton recorded an influential jazz song titled "Jelly Roll Blues," which is most likely what Hunter is referencing here.                          In the late ‘60's and early ‘70's the band played it more frequently.  Although more in the Americana style adopted by the Dead at the beginning of the ‘70's than the primal Dead from the ‘60's.  But it became linked with primal Dead by being part of so many shows from that period.  On the Fillmore West complete recordings for Feb. 27, 28 and March 1,2 on both the first and third night the band opened the second set with this song into Mountains of the Moon before launching in the Dark Star>St. Stephen>The Eleven>Lovelight suite made famous on Live Dead.  But after that it just kind of fell off the band's radar except for certain tours where it would show up for three or four shows before again getting pushed to the side.  Very enduring.

With slick hair, a wry smile and a penchant for violence, John Griggs was the picture of a Sixties California greaser. His gang caused chaos across Anaheim, and Griggs himself was a habitual user of hard drugs. Until, one night in 1966, they robbed a Hollywood pool party for its acid, Griggs took a bunch, and almost overnight pivoted to becoming one of America's leading proponents of psychadelics—right when hippie culture and the Summer of Love was at its peak. Griggs' cult-like Brotherhood of Eternal Love became a lodestar for America's counterculture—and a gigantic smuggling operation from Mexico and the States, to the so-called Hippie Trail, stashing Afghan and Nepali hash in cars, film reel cans or even surfboards before reaping the thousand-percent markup back home. Griggs' goal was to flood America with so much LSD that every man and woman would get high and help create a new, peaceful utopia. When renowned academic and acid-lover Timothy Leary joined Griggs' cause, the Brotherhood may have looked unstoppable. Then it was stung by disaster after disaster—from hardened criminals and police informants, to Leary's manic downfall and a plucky local cop named Neil Purcell. Part 1 of our show on the Brotherhood of Eternal Love charts John Griggs' irresistable rise to messianic stardom, and his group's creation of a new, potent acid named Orange Sunshine, just before his utopian vision began metastasizing into something most folks would later know as the "Hippie Mafia". Mysteries of the Deep

Mysteries' latest comes from The Spiral, whose debut release, Orange Sunshine, is a strange, cosmic unfolding, or a glimpse into another dimension that takes its influence from being, in fact, under the influence. The Spiral is a new project from Oliver Chapoy (formerly Certain Creatures), and the album is a sonic representation of a LSD-infused journey. The Spiral aims to capture not only a certain sound but a mood, as inspired by Chapoy’s own psychedelic wanderings in the mountains of Japan. The opening track, “Two Drops,” takes us down the proverbial rabbit hole, and we get the sense that we’re about to be transported to another world entirely. The tracks “Redshift” and “Blueshift” continue the transmutation and—nearing ten minutes each—are mini journeys in themselves. Frequency modulations and whirring oscillations make everything sound and feel wobbly. Similar to the come-up stage of a trip, there’s a sense we’re about to break through. By the time Orange Sunshine reaches its literal peak in “Moon over Minakami” we feel as if we’ve arrived in the center; this is very much the focal point of the album. This track is epic and euphoric, and is tied to a specific memory in Minakami. Chapoy says of his intentions with the album, "Much of this record is a sonic reinterpretation of my experience in Japan as an escape after such a tumultuous year." Chapoy is a master of playing with the spatial qualities of soundscape, and at times sounds appear in one ear and retreat to the other, which adds to the visceral sensory experience and strengthens the conceptual aspect. At its core, Orange Sunshine is an intentionally disorienting collection of collaged arrangements that work cohesively, and to mesmerizing effect. The ending too is a gorgeous dissolving of textures, like energy being dispersed over the infinite. As signaled by its name, so much of this album is what you’d expect: trippy, transportive, adventurous, densely packed, and highly immersive. However like all hallucinogenic voyages, so much of it is unexpected: Orange Sunshine truly surprises. Chapoy has found a distinct voice with The Spiral, and this debut shows he is an artist finding himself and his sound, ironically, by creating a world we can easily get lost in. Hashish, Hawaii & The Hippie Mafia - Featuring Founding Member Of The Brotherhood Of Eternal Love Travis Ashbrook (Episode 8).  In this epic, double-sized episode of Cannthropology, host Bobby Black speaks with quite possibly the most notorious hash smuggler in US history, one of the founding members of the Brotherhood of Eternal Love, Travis Ashbrook. Ashbrook opens up about the Brotherhood's origins and history, his lifetime of smuggling weed and hash, his friendship with famed acid guru Timothy Leary and how the Brotherhood helped break him out of prison, getting high with Jimi Hendrix in Hawaii, creating the mythical Maui Wowie strain, and his decades of living on the run and in prison. Notoriously nicknamed “The Hippie Mafia,” The Brotherhood of Eternal Love was the world's largest producer and distributors of LSD, as well as the biggest smugglers of hashish & marijuana during the 1960s and early 1970s. Founded in Laguna Beach, California in 1966, the Brotherhood's mission was to “turn on” the world to psychedelics, and to finance that dream they smuggled tons and tons of hashish into the US from Afghanistan before eventually being brought down by the Feds in 1973. Their incredible misadventures are chronicled in a 2010 book and 2016 documentary film, both entitled Orange Sunshine after the type of acid that made them famous. The surviving members of the original Brotherhood have inducted into the High Times Counterculture Hall of Fame at the Cannabis Cup in Amsterdam in 2011.

Vienna is a city of Old World baroque charm, cafés, and waltzes. It consistently ranks as one of the best places to live in the world. It’s the city of Mozart, Freud, Klimt, and Strauss. Except this story is less Blue Danube, more Orange Sunshine. This week, Andrés and guest producer Aisha Prigann plunge into a 1970s acid flashback and return with a tale of mind-expansion, revolutionary politics, and the dangers of meeting your idols. It’s the story of a group of accidental filmmakers getting caught up in a psychedelic act of diplomacy starring the Chancellor of Austria and Timothy Leary, the high priest of LSD on the run from the law. What kind of mad chemistry could have made this happen? And how did the manic sparkle of the 1970s transform Vienna into the city it is today? For more, including links to the things we talked about, and the places we visited, plus a full transcript, visit: https://frequencymachine.com/passport Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/passport. Smuggling hashish out of Afghanistan in the 1970s presented the Brotherhood of Eternal Love with a unique supply side problem, which they solved in a way that forever changed the game for cannabis concentrates and culture. Best known today for their international LSD operation, this legendary group of surfers, smugglers, and psychedelic evangelists also worked together with the Black Panthers and the Weather Underground to break their spiritual leader Timothy Leary out of prison. In this episode, Abdullah and Bean focus in on the Brotherhood's incredible marijuana smuggling ring, which got them dubbed "the hippie mafia" and involved some of the most fascinating characters in the long and fascinating history of cannabis true crime. Including the largely unknown story of Ronald Hadley Stark, who has been pegged by various people at various times as an undercover CIA asset sent to subvert the counterculture, a rogue KGB operative sent to foment a new American revolution, a ruthless career criminal disguised as a peace-and-love flower child, and a cunning snitch who transformed the Brotherhood of Eternal Love from idealistic hippies into international drug smugglers. At the MAPS Psychedelic Science Conference 2010 with experiential journalist Rak Razam: * Stan Grof divulges his personal history in the Checkoslovakian psychedelic scene of the 1950s and his first trip in 1956; psychedelic therapy, his LSD research in America and his disappointment at the discarding of years of scientific data; his subsequent founding of holotropic breathwork and its ability to alter consciousness; and his thoughts on the current wave of psychedelic research in some ways going over old ground... Stan advocates the technologies of the sacred as part of healing and a network of centers to support the exploration of consciousness in a supported environment... * Nick Sand, famed LSD chemist who developed "Orange Sunshine" tells of his part in the acid movement of the sixties and beyond in a sizzling conversation... Sand trained with Mazatec mushroom shamaness Maria Sabina and received his first illuminations in cosmic glossalalia with her, deciding to first synthesize psilocybin... When that proved too expensive to produce he turned his hand to DMT, creating the first street use of the tryptamine in the US and turning people on, including Richard Alpert from Millbrook... Sand went on to become the Chief Alchemist for the League of Spiritual Discovery–and was prosecuted for following his religion under his constitutional rights... The rest is history, and a very colorful one at that! Learn the secrets of pizeoluminescent-LSD as the inner light, the sacrafice the acid chemists took personally for their work, how Sand survived life in prison, his Eckhart Tolle connection–and how Richard Milhouse Nixon was dosed with acid, and much, much more in this very provoking interview...
