This mini-episode is a compliment to our 2022 holiday episode. We promised we'd eventually track down the fellow responsible for bringing the Lights of Winter to EPCOT Center. Brian and Todd talk to Jim Heffelfinger whose 20 year career with Walt Disney World began as stage manager at the Hoop Dee Doo Musical Review at Pioneer Hall (where he met and shares a great story about our friend Billy Flanigan). Over the next two decades he worked with Disney Legend Ron Logan and the rest of the entertainment team to bring Christmas as we know it to EPCOT, Fantasmic to Florida, the Muppets to Hollywood Boulevard, the holidays and a parade to Animal Kingdom and the Osborne Family Spectacle of Lights to Disney-MGM Studios. Some of his shows, like Beauty & The Beast Live on Stage are still running today much as he designed them while others are very fondly remembered. This is a fun interview where you'll learn a lot and, of course, we ask him for memories of Ron Logan and Dick Nunis and invite him to a future RetroMagic event. Jim Heffelfinger is an unsung hero of holidays in Walt Disney World and many beloved live shows. Enjoy the interview.
What does a lost black cat, angry neighbors, and a Supreme Court case have to do with one of Hollywood Studio's extinct attractions? In this episode of Distory, we bring back the much-missed Osborne Spectacle of Dancing Lights for one more glimpse of Holiday magic. Starting with its humble beginnings of 1,000 lights in Arkansas, this spectacle had its share of growing pains (and lawsuits) before it moved to Disney-MGM Studios and became a memorable Christmas tradition every year for thousands of Disney fans. From scavenger hunts to technological advances through the years, we dig deep into the meaning of this special attraction and explain where you can still (sort of) see it today. In this episode we're keeping it Christmas themed and talking about one of the coolest light shows that never should have been replaced
AJ, Mike, and Chris invite you to join us for a walk along Residential Street as we explore the history of the Osborne Family Spectacle of Lights! Jennings Osborne started decorating his Little Rock home in 1986, and soon drew the ire of his neighbors. Four 18-wheelers later and the Disney-MGM Studios had a most magical Christmas display. Learn how Jennings was approached by Disney, how the light changed over the years, and where you can still experience them today! This holiday season, 90s Disney is joining up with Give Kids the World Village! As part of their Night of a Million Lights fundraising event, we've created a team with goal of raising $500. This incredible resort offers free, week-long vacations to terminally ill children and their families. We hope you join us as we make the holidays a little bit brighter! Greg Nutt posted a photo: The old backlot, or, Streets of America, at the former Disney-MGM Studios at Walt Disney World had a lot of character. The backlot was demolished for the construction of Galaxy's Edge at the renamed Disney's Hollywood Studios. The backlot was a lot of fun, but the reasons for why they were built to use as filming locations in addition to the tourist aspect of it, was never fully realized. It was also the former home to The Osborne Family Spectacle of Dancing Lights from 2005-2016.

In this Episode we share history and stories of one of the greatest shows ever presented at Walt Disney World. The Osborne Family Spectacle of Lights, later The Osborne Family Spectacle of Dancing Lights holds a special place in our memories and likewise in the memories of probably anyone who ever saw them! Laura tells the tale of Jennings Osborne from Little Rock, Arkansas who was on a simple quest to spend more time with his family. It's the most wonderful time of year here on the Disney Avenue Podcast and boy, what an amazing show we have in store for you. As many of you know, Christmas and Disney go hand in hand. I’ve yet to experience a Christmas display or Spectacle anywhere on earth that can top Disney. The beautiful lights and decorations along Main Street, the beauty of Cinderella Castle decked out in millions of lights, and, of course, that little light show over in Disney’s Hollywood Studios, the truly breathtaking Osborne Family Spectacle of Dancing Lights. As many of you may have heard by now, this year, 2015, will be the last year that Disney will be showcasing this 20-year-old holiday tradition. And so, with the Holiday Season now upon us and with the closing of the Osborne Lights, I thought, what can we do here on the Disney Avenue Podcast to really capture that Disney Christmas spirit, what can we do to entertain our listeners and bring them more of our signature interviews, history and stories from big names in the Disney stratosphere? And then it hit me! Why not continue a Disney Avenue Podcast Christmas tradition by inviting the top Disney historian and author on the planet earth to come on the show and tell us all about the history of the Osborne Family Spectacle of Dancing Lights and other gone but not forgotten Walt Disney World Christmas classics. So friends, it is with Christmas cheer and everything holly and jolly, to welcome back for a third time to the Disney Avenue Podcast, the one and only, Jim Korkis. While listening to this wonderful show, please be sure to head on over to themeparkpress.com and grab yourself a copy of Jim's brand new books on sale now. The Osborne Family Spectacle of dancing Lights has been entertaining guest at Hollywood Studios for 20 years! Unfortunately, 2015 marks the last year for the Osborne lights the way we know them. The lights started dancing after they moved to The Streets of America in 2006. For more on story behind the lights and their history check out SamsDisneyDiary #21 Blog / Video or Podcast Episode. Just a few year ago in 2013 Walt Disney World introduced the “Made with Magic” or “Glow with the Show” at that time. These special Mickey ears, bring the technology from Disneyland’s California Adventure, where if premiered in June 2013. According to Disney, “Become part of the show like never before as you illuminate the evening with a colorful collection of magical accessories” Made With Magic includes the original “Mickey Ear Hat” formerly Glow with the Show along with a Minnie Mouse Headband, Mickey mouse Glove and Sorcerer Mickey Wand. Each are programmed to light up at key moments, matching the colors and flashing to the beat through a variety of popular evening shows at Walt Disney World. Including: Wishes Nighttime Spectacular, Celebrate the Magic, Fantasmic and The Osborne Family Spectacle of Dancing Lights. For this episode of SamsDisneyDiary I positioned my camera behind the display of “Made with Magic” Ears, you can see how they interact with the music and Osborne lights. Inside The Mouse Castle: Disney News, Information and Commentary
After technical difficulties and busy travel schedules squashed last week's show, Tim and Anthony are back for another go-round Inside The Mouse Castle. We start off with Tim's review of Walt Disney, the new American Experience documentary airing this week on PBS. It's an earnest, if somewhat biased, depiction of Walt's life that plays up the darker elements of his personality and career. Fans will appreciate the rare photographs and archival footage, while Disney history buffs will question how the film presents Walt's relationship with his father, his actions during the 1941 studio strike and the assorted psychobabble spouted by some of the "experts" who try to crawl inside Walt's head. Here's what else we have in this week's episode: A live action Frozen stage show will replace the long-running Disney's Aladdin--A Musical Spectacular production in the Hyperion Theater at Disney California Adventure...and the Internet loses its mind. We now know for certain that Disneyland and Walt Disney World will break ground on their Star Wars-Land expansions next year. That means the Osborne Family Spectacle of Dancing Lights, the popular holiday light show at Disney's Hollywood Studios will blink out after this year. Director Brad Bird has let it be known that work on Incredibles 2 is moving along briskly, so well that it will likely be released before the other Pixar sequel, Cars 3. That still means it probably won't be out until 2018, but any news about The Incredibles is good news. Disney Infinity 3.0 will be available on Apple TV after the streaming service undergoes an extensive update in October. Some participants in this month's Disneyland Half-Marathon complained of incorrect corral assignments, suggesting there are proof-of-time security issues with RunDisney and TrackShack.
