#184. Lisa Moorish on 'Divine Chaos' and Her Triumphant Return to Music

In Episode #184 of The XS Noize Podcast, host Mark Millar speaks to singer/songwriter and indie-dance pop icon Lisa Moorish about her new album, Divine Chaos. This is Moorish's first new music in 20 years, released on the sister label to Irvine Welsh's Jack Said What imprint. Lisa wanted to work with a female co-producer on this new album and teamed up with Zoe Devlin Love (Alabama 3). Renowned producer Steve Mac brought an extra dimension to the collection's tougher electronic beats. Together, they have delivered many flavours—from dance-influenced tracks to indie electronica—amalgamating Lisa's varied sounds across the decades. Lisa Moorish first made her name in music as a teenager when she had a club hit in 1989 with Rock To The Beat, a track written by Detroit techno luminaries Juan Atkins and Kevin Saunderson that fed into the UK's acid house explosion. She went on to work with the likes of Paul Weller and George Michael before being swept up in the Britpop scene and recording vocals on tracks by some of the biggest bands of that era — Oasis, Blur and Ash. She then started her indie electro-punk band, Kill City, in the early noughties, and they were snapped up by music mogul Alan McGee and signed to his new label, Poptones. In this interview, Lisa discusses the writing and recording of Divine Chaos, duetting with George Michael, the Britpop scene and more.  Listen via YouTube | Apple Podcasts | Spotify | Amazon Music | RSS – Find The XS Noize Podcast's complete archive of episodes here.

It's damn annoying when someone you don't like says something you don't like. This Is Not A PIL Special.

The Paddingtons were one of the leading lights of the London grot'n'roll scene of the mid '00s - despite being from, er, Hull. Singer Tom Atkin and bassist Lloyd Dobbs join this week's episode to reminisce about the raucous squat party gigs that helped them make their name, what it was like being feted by Pete Doherty (and slated by Liam Gallagher) and an infamous photo shoot with the leading lights of the scene outside Buckingham Palace. Lloyd and Tom also talk about how a Libertines connection brought them to London, why legendary music mogul Alan McGee signed them to his Poptones label and how they ended up modelling on the catwalk for photographer and fashion designer Hedi Slimane. They also discuss what the band - still occasionally active - have been up to since the release of their last album in 2008 and how Tom is carving out a new solo career (hear his new track by clicking here (https://youtu.be/K_KSV_irCwI) ). Just got home from work, and it's so warm and muggy and gross that the outside feels like the inside of a sewer. YUCK! Luckily, Random Old Records Podcast is back with a brand new episode containing 58 minutes and 7 seconds of chilled-out jams that feel like a blast of sweet A/C to the face. You can download it for free HERE.Episode #52 starts off with some recent blissed-out ballads from the likes of Martin Courtney, Salad Boys, and The Lavender Flu, then flows into two sizzling sets of 60s sunshine pop and soft psych. You'll hear the brooding and tense "Her Name Is Melody" from Adrian Pride (a pseudonym for tripped-out troubadour Bernie Schwartz), recently featured on the Nuggets: Hallucinations comp re-released on Record Store Day 2016. You'll also hear the fuzzed-out "Bad Dream" from the heavily mustachioed Dick Domane, included on Pet Records' essential Mystic Males collection, and the chiming folk-rocker "Leaving It All Behind" by The Toads, included on Pet Records' also essential It's Zimmerman's World LP (and a whole lot more from Pet Records since they are AMAZING and you need everything they ever put out). This one took a lot of time to put together, just to ensure a solid sequence of good vibes from front to back. I hope everyone enjoys it! I've been busy cataloging and organizing my 7" collection for the first time in many years, so July's episode will feature an hour of top jams culled from my racks of 45s! In the meantime, make it your goal to seek out the fantastic debut DOUBLE LP from The Lavender Flu, entitled Heavy Air. It features former Hunches guitarist Chris Gunn going long and weird on a sprawling set of suburban loner back porch pop with a crew of guests. If you're sick of checking out the latest and greatest bands only to find out you can hum all of the chord changes before the first song finishes, then you need it immediately. Every time you think it's gonna zig, it zags. Every time you get lulled into some delicately picked melancholy, everything goes pear shaped. It is just lovely! Un style énergique et froid, mélancolique et inventif, aussi bref (78-84) qu'influent sur la musique d'aujourd'hui (Interpol, Editors, The XX...).Jean-Charles Versari interprète des reprises dépouillées de : Duran Duran "Rio", Depeche Mode "Master and Servant", The Cure "A Forest", Siouxsie and the Banshees "Melt", Minimal Compact "It Takes a Lifetime", Cocteau Twins "Blind Dumb Deaf", Joy Division "Colony", Bauhaus "The Three Shadows pt.2", Lydia Lunch "Atomic Bongos", Birthday Party "Fears of Gun", Public Image Limited "Rise", "Death Disco (Swan Lake)".

JUNIOR ASPIRIN PODCAST 09: THE HUMORS, in FOUR PARTS....Four reflections on medieval humorism. Like Rick Wakeman said of his "Six wives of Henry VIII" , these are not meant to be taken as literal representations of the four medieval temperaments... rather a contemporary redressing of an imbalance of humors.Devised and selected by Patrick Gibson.Part One - Sanguine.Laughing the loudest and wearing the flashiest outfits, a courageous selection of tracks. Ultimately lending themselves to sketches, life drawings, and rustic scenes. The humor of Sanguine is usually treated with leeches. PODCAST HEREPart Two - Choleric.BILE BILE BILE a fiery YELLOW grouping. There is nothing I love as much as a good fight. A natural superabundance of the choleric. PODCAST HEREPart Three - Melancholic.Semper Dowland, semper dolens. Melancholy Dane. Indolent dreaming wistfulness. Where is the ring I gave to Nancy Spain? PODCAST HEREPart Four - Phlegmatic.Get up late in the morning; Dorian mode on C; Take a nap; Eat; In this case the mode is the Phrygian; Take another nap; Go to bed. Hey Mr Pharmacist! This is one for those availed of a superb set of headphones - frequency spectrum junkies, medotists, nanologicians, monkish gong ritualists - communicate with the insect kingdom: Phenomenon, certainly but without the Iron Maiden.
