Ever wonder how detailed research can ignite a writer's imagination while crafting tales from the annals of history? Join our conversation with the gifted author Dom Nolan as he uncovers the magic behind writing historical fiction set against London's vivid past. Listen in as Dom dispels myths about the rigidity of planning in storytelling, offering a fresh perspective on the intricate dance between creativity and historical accuracy and insights behind his new novel, White City.Through Dom's story, we explore the unpredictable nature of creative careers and the resilience needed to navigate them, showing how each hurdle, including writing unpublishable novels, became a stepping stone toward eventual success. We also lift the veil on the evolving and often perplexing landscape of the publishing industry, where trust and timing can elevate a book's journey. White CityIt's 1952, and London is victorious but broken, a city of war ruins and rationing, run by gangsters and black-market spivs. An elaborate midnight heist, the biggest robbery in British history, sends newspapers into a frenzy. Politicians are furious, the police red-faced. They have suspicions but no leads. Hunches but no proof. For two families, it is more than just a sensational headline, as their fathers fail to return home on the day of the robbery.Young Addie Rowe, daughter of a missing Jamaican postman and drunk ex-club hostess mother, struggles to care for her little sister in a dilapidated Brixton rooming house. Claire Martin, increasingly resentful of roads not taken, strives to make the rent and keep her teenage son Ray from falling under unsavoury influences in Notting Dale. She finds herself caught between the interests of dangerous men who may know the truth behind her husband's disappearance: Dave Lander, whose reserved nature she finds difficult to reconcile with his reputation as a violent gang enforcer, and Teddy 'Mother' Nunn, a sociopathic, evangelising outlaw and top lieutenant in Billy Hill's underworld.Drawn together through the years in the city's invisible web of crime Send us a textSupport the show"Enjoying 'The Conversation'? This week, the panel begins by exploring Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé with Slate culture writer (and Beyhive stan) Nadira Goffe. The renowned pop diva's theatrical debut works both as a well-oiled concert documentary as well as a surprisingly heartfelt deconstruction of Knowles' previously impenetrable image of perfection. Then, the three consider Todd Haynes' May December, an emotionally curious, tonally dissonant study of life's gray areas starring Natalie Portman, longtime collaborator Julianne Moore, and Charles Melton. Loosely based on the real-life relationship between Mary Kay Letourneau and Vili Fualaau, Haynes (and screenwriter Samy Burch) questions Hollywood's penchant for sensationalizing tragedy and the ways humans interact with each other. Finally, they are joined by EEFOP (Exceedingly Exceptional Friend of the Pod), Slate writer Dan Kois to discuss Dr. Seuss's How the Grinch Lost Christmas!, a posthumous sequel to Theodor Geisel's iconic 1957 children's book, How the Grinch Stole Christmas! The original IP has been marketed and re-imagined within an inch of its life – but does new author Alastair Heim invoke any of the source materials' sincerity or deeper meaning? In the exclusive Slate Plus segment, the panel answers a listener question from Timothy: “When reading for pleasure, how do you choose what to read next?” We're also accepting submissions to our yearly call-in show, where Dana, Julia, and Stephen answer questions from Culture Gabfest listeners. Get in touch! Submit a question by calling (260) 337-8260 or emailing us at culturefest@slate.com. Outro music: “Spinning the Wheels” by Dusty Decks Endorsements: Dana: A two-part endorsement that goes together like wine and cheese: If I Should Fall from Grace with God, the third studio album by Irish folk-rock band The Pogues, and “Shane MacGowan Leaves the Astral Plane,” a wonderful essay by Amanda Petrusich at The New Yorker, which memorializes the late frontman. Don't know where to start with The Pogues' catalog? Dana recommends “A Rainy Night in Soho.” Julia: Drawing inspiration from this episode's children's book segment, Julia endorses the Little Blue Truck series (written by Alice Schertle and illustrated by the late Jill McElmurry) alongside her favorite Theodor Geisel work, Hunches and Bunches. “It's the Beyoncé of Dr. Seuss books.” Steve: Paris is Burning, which pairs beautifully with Beyoncé's Renaissance. Jennie Livingston's landmark 1990 documentary is one of the most moving films Stephen has ever seen, and provides a vibrant snapshot of New York City's drag-ball scene in the ‘80s. Dr. Laura hosts another solo episode to discuss the topic of intuition. A topic she is passionate about, she defines intuition as a gut instinct, feeling something is off, or a hunch that something isn't right. Our intuition is as valuable to our lives as science and data, and Dr. Laura explains why.Our inner voice is an accumulation of so many experiences we've had as a human being and it needs to be taken into account. The common perception that our intuition is “fluffy” or just “emotional” discounts our natural instincts and inner knowing. Dr. Laura explains some of the science behind intuition, the ability to sense external cues that stems from our spinal cord and guts, and why learning to factor intuition into our daily lives gives us extra insight into decision making. Intuition is a gift; we should be conscious of honing it to the benefit of our work and lives.“We all make decisions that we end up regretting. But I want to encourage you to turn that regret into learning. Say, what did I learn from that for next time that I'm going to put into action so that I can better trust my gut? Because again, the concrete data is important, but it does not always tell us the full story of what lies ahead.” Dr. LauraAbout Dr. Laura:Bringing nearly 25 years of expertise as an Industrial/Organizational and Career Psychologist and pioneer on the future of work, Dr. Laura helps organizations evolve their cultures, and leaders and employees to thrive in their work and lives. She shares her expertise through keynote speaking, the Where Work Meets LifeTM podcast, strategic career coaching, and writing articles and books.Resources:Learn more about Dr. Laura on her website: https://drlaura.liveFor more resources, look into Dr. Laura's organizations: Canada Career CounsellingSynthesis Psychology
Today I want to talk about the last 4 sections of Think & Grow Rich... Transmutation Sub Conscious Mind The Brain 6th Sense 10. THE MYSTERY OF SEX TRANSMUTATION Controversial section of the book. Transmute is the changing or transferring of one element or form to another. We all have strong sexual energy within us that we can transform into other creative forms. Some of the most successful leaders in time have had strong sex drives... The sexual energy may be transformed into a kinda magnetism...great sales people Example of energy communicated through handshake, tone of voice, posture, vibrations of thought and body language... He also talks about the importance of a great partner and how the energy can be harnesses with intention when a great partner is behind you. 11 THE SUB-CONSCIOUS MIND The subconscious (sub) mind is the true master of our reality and everything we create. The subconscious mind is never at rest and will take in everything you experience...it does not determine what is real or not real. This is why visualization is so important. I encourage you to thoroughly read this chapter but here are a couple important points.... You can influence sub through your conscious thoughts. The thoughts and images need to be vivid and mixed with emotion and faith. You should feed your sub with repetition and positivity. Hunches and inspiration are a direct result of your sub mind guiding you to your goals. You can control more of your sub mind by quieting your conscious mind through meditation and mindfulness. NOTE: Be careful what you feed your mind with because sub picks everything up without filter. 12. THE BRAIN (Visualization) Not a very long chapter, but I love how he describes the brain...The broadcasting and receiving station for thought...definitely one of the most complex organs and truly one that will determine your results in life. Understanding the connection between the brain and Conscious/Subconscious thought is so important. You are not your brain or your thoughts, but you do control your thoughts and must maintain your brain. I'm not going to spend a lot of time on this, but I want to add some personal comments for you to consider: Are you feeding your brain? Are you drinking plenty of water? Are you maintaining a clean, healthy, energetic brain? Start to use or think of your brain as the tool you can use to connect your conscious and subconscious thoughts. You must consider this organ as one of the most important assets you have...period. 13. THE 6th SENSE Your intuition, inspiration or "gut" feelings. This Sense comes when you are tuning into the frequencies of your subconscious mind. It is only understood by first applying and understanding the first 12 steps...much like meditation. This is most active when you are tapping into your subconscious mind and the universe, energy, etc. So you can see how these steps all go together and build on each other. Lets review: 1- Desire 2- Faith 3- Auto Suggestion 4- Specialized Knowledge 5- Imagination 6- Organized Planning 7- Decision 8- Persistence 9- Power of the Mastermind 10- Transmutation (Enthusiastic Support) 11- The Subconscious Mind 12- The Brain 13- The Sixth Sense It is my hope and desire that this review we have done the last few days is going to inspire you to read or reread think and grow rich. Remember, that success leaves clues and time has proven this guide to be one of the ultimate guides to accomplishing anything you want in life.

Infectious Joy!We all “high-function” in life and our relationships when we are full of joy and peace. The profound and simple strategy of Whatever we focus on gets bigger and bigger and stronger and stronger has the potential to change the story of your life. Anything you're not wanting to experience “more of” simply stop looking at it and obsessing over it. Anything you ARE wanting to experience more of….redemptive qualities in your children and spouse, good news, beauty, and hope, look and focus on those things, and you'll experience a turnaround! We truly are shaped by our thoughtsScripture makes it so clear, and offers a clear map to infectious joy: 4 Always be full of joy in the Lord. I say it again—rejoice! 5 Let everyone see that you are considerate in all you do. Remember, the Lord is coming soon.6 Don't worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. 7 Then you will experience God's peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.8 And now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing. Fix your thoughts on what is true, honorable, right, pure, lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise. 9 Keep putting into practice all you learned and received from me—everything you heard from me and saw me doing. Then the God of peace will be with you (Philippians 4:4-9).Troubling TimesWhat do we do when circumstances and appearances look grim? This is your day to change the story of my life, and encounter peace. If you continue to tell yourself the same story, It's just a matter of time until there's another injustice, and life will keep being too serious and there is no fun. Try some of these practical steps: 1. Remind yourself: I can (and will) find joy in this journey. I will not blame anybody for my current circumstances or disappointments. I'm going to give up trying to change anybody. I refuse to measure other people's progress. 2. I chose to smile as I imagine the possibilities ahead, even if it isn't what I first imagined it would be. I give, I consider others, and I sacrifice for others, and therefore discover the art of true giving. It's more blessed and rewarding to give rather than receive! 3. Listen with patience, listen like a sponge, and absorb those around you, and any troubles they have incurred. Learning to truly listen expresses love, acceptance, and compassion in a way that will turn circumstances around. Everyone loves to feel heard! What do I do to foster infectious joy?Celebrate even when there isn't a big event! It's important to mark small, daily successes and things “going well”. Even if it's about getting off work earlier than expected or starting an exercise regime. These are positive events that gain strength and significance when we make time to recognize them with excitement and affection. Celebrate good news together. Search for good news! You will find what you're looking for. And “match” the excitement and celebration of others.Enjoy listening to God's voice, and consider developing this skill. Hunches are the hounds of heaven! Every simple step makes a big difference in your relationships. Don't underestimate what you can do today!Music by lemonmusicstudio from Pixabay.

JJ Reynolds started his journey into digital marketing by running ads for content that he created at a small agency. However, he quickly learned that most organizations didn't use numbers to guide business decisions. Now he focuses on assisting businesses in measuring and acting on their marketing data by running Mediauthentic and teaching on Better Than Data. Understanding that online marketing can make huge improvements with small changes, he helps eliminate the “guesswork” by strategizing with companies using tools like Google Analytics and Google Tag Manager. Reynolds helps clients using Google Marketing Cloud, where he's able to predictably increase MRR (monthly recurring revenue) while measuring each channel's step in the marketing journey. With his team, they take all of their clients' data from their CRM, Google Analytics, and cart platform, then turn it into a real-time data dashboard for you to take action. JJ believes that what most digital businesses need is someone to provide reliable, consistent data to help them take action. What you will learn The compelling reasons why all businesses should be using dashboards and data Using data to make good investment decisions when it comes to advertising How to use paid media effectively to acquire new leads How Apple's data privacy policies are affecting your ads The steps JJ takes to build a data dashboard The powerful role AI plays in business data today JJ shares his struggles and the challenges he's faced on his own entrepreneurial journey The critical importance of systems and processes The tools JJ uses when collaborating with his remote team Plus loads more!

Successfully navigating through life can be summed up as the ability to trust our hunches and roll with the punches. Trusting our intuition is loving God. Our intuition is always trying to get our attention and guide us to our heart's desire. We often dismiss its nudges because we think they're unrealistic, unreasonable, too good to be true for us, or just silly. On this episode, Darrell and Ed encourage each other and listeners to follow God's lead. And realize if you're stuck in an unhealthy job or relationship, rather than fight it or adopt a victim position, see that it might just be the necessary nudge you need to change direction. ActorbRod Sweitzer inspires us all to take a gamble on God with today's reading, “Divine Direction”.

Beebe Bahrami – The Way of the Wild Goose: Three Pilgrimages Following Geese, Stars, and Hunches on the Camino de SantiagoAired Wednesday, December 21, 2022 at 5:00 PM PST / 8:00 PM ESTThe Spanish word, “Camino,” may be translated as path, road or way. The Camino de Santiago, “The Way of Saint James,” is a pilgrimage route that runs through southern France and northern Spain. When my guest this week on Destination Unlimited, trekker, writer, and anthropologist Beebe Bahrami made her first full 500-mile hike on the Camino de Santiago, she learned that this “way” was more than a Christian pilgrimage. She discovered that beneath this 1,200-year-old pilgrimage road was a more ancient, pre-Christian initiatory path that could take one deeper into spiritual experience and consciousness and that images relating to the wild goose and sacred feminine marked the path of initiation. Her website is https://beebebahrami.weebly.com/ and she joins me this week to share her amazing path and latest book, The Way of the Wild Goose: Three Pilgrimages Following Geese, Stars, and Hunches on the Camino de Santiago.Connect with Victor Fuhrman at http://victorthevoice.com/#BeebeBahrami #21 MilesInMalibu #VictorFuhrman #DestinationUnlimitedSubscribe to our Newsletter https://omtimes.com/subscribe-omtimes-magazine/Connect with OMTimes on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/Omtimes.Magazine/ and OMTimes Radio https://www.facebook.com/ConsciousRadiowebtv.OMTimes/Twitter: https://twitter.com/OmTimes/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/omtimes/Linkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/company/2798417/Pinterest: https://www.pinterest.com/omtimes/
This week I sit down with Beebe Bahrami who is an award-winning travel writer and anthropologist. Beebe wrote a beautiful book called "The Way of Goose: Three Pilgrimages Following Geese, Stars, and Hunches on the Camino de Santiago." We discuss her book that is a travel narrative, adventure story, and a spiritual pilgrimage. Beebe opens up about the power of the Camino and its ley lines that she described as "imbued by the human imagination." She shares the transformational power of the Camino--how everyone walking it becomes an explorer and an alchemist. Through her own camino's she found that the goose was very likely an ancient Eurasian earth-centered mother goddess who took many forms but the goose was among her most prominent forms. This ties into goose vision, which Beebe's states "is burning off base influences of the ego to bring up and reveal the luminous, gold of your spirit." To learn more about Beebe head over to website and pick up her book here. You can also pick up her travel companion guidebook "Moon Camino de Santiago--Sacred Sites, Historic Villages, Local Food & Wine" here. It's easier now than ever before for businesses to run CRO experiments, but what happens when great technology is misused? From not running enough tests to manipulating data to prove a favored hypothesis, there are many ways businesses use testing resources incorrectly — and screw up their growth in the process. So, how can we Unf*ck these issues?Join me, Siobhan Solberg, and my co-host Russell McAthy as we chat with Optimal Visit's Optimiser in Chief, Craig Sullivan, about all things testing. We get into why there is no such thing as a ‘failed' test, the importance of optimizing your experiment programs, and how A/B testing can help you grow better tomatoes (literally). In this episode:Many more businesses are starting to run tests, but few run enough to drive real impact. The more you test before setting updates live, the fewer mistakes you'll make. There's no such thing as a failed test. Tests that don't prove your hypothesis are as valuable as ‘successful' tests — and can actually tell you more.Tests should provide strong evidence that changing from what you're doing now is the right idea.Hunches and leaps of faith have their merit but need to be augmented by data, not driven by assumptions. What should start-ups focus on if they don't have adequate sample sizes or KPI outcomes? How can businesses blend qualitative and quantitative data to generate better quality ideas?Tests should never be run until a clear and measurable hypothesis that's rooted in critical thinking has been written.Manipulating data to support your hypothesis and personal biases leads to flawed business decisions. The only way to truly understand your audience is to talk to them and run tests.Accurately and authentically representing your audience drives better results and can change the way they engage with your business. How to optimize experimentation programs in order to scale.Big decisions can't be made based on one A/B test that fails to take into account wider contexts.Marketers should not ignore the importance of segmenting mobile and desktop users when running cross-device experiments. Why governance and transparency are the largest things to be Unf*cked in testing.Resources:Craig on LinkedInCraig on Twitter

What a thrill it was to have peregrina, writer and cultural anthropologist, Beebe Bahrami, back at The Camino Cafe to discuss her newest Camino book, The Way of the Wild Goose: Three Pilgrimages Following Geese, Stars, and Hunches on the Camino de Santiago in France and Spain. During this interview, we discuss her upcoming retreat at Flores del Camino, the three pilgrimages she took for research on her newest book, intentional travel, Mary and the sacred feminine on The Camino Frances, the energy of The Camino, and of course, the wild goose. 2:00 Mid-season, some prize purses are getting beefed up to hefty, pre-pandemic amounts! Why are some tracks having trouble and others having record seasons? 4:48 The Alabama Stakes demonstrated why we bow down to supreme filly Malathaat, but just lookee at Clairiere who made a lovely, gritty go of it! 7:15 Weej made out on the Alabama, too! But what's an Exacta Key Box anyway, and how does it work? 9:10 We mention the importance of the post parade with the splendor of Army Wife, who coaxed a late bet out of Trixie and salvaged an otherwise sorry slate of bets. (Oh, Crazy Beautiful, what happened?) 10:35 The TVG Pacific Classic offered fascinating twists, because the favorites seemed to go AWOL. So many fast horses taking smoke breaks during this one! 12:00 Tizamagician justified our mysterious and unpopular love (HA!) with a 2nd Place finish. Hunches can compliment data! 14:10 How often do favorites win races by percentage? 15:20 Winner Tripoli made the angels sing to Weej during the post parade. The 1, 2, 3 first horses at the post surprisingly finished in exactly that order, adding Dr. Post as the Show. Last-minute impressions matter. 19:25 Sheriff Brown's extremely impressive return from way, WAY behind the pack to finish 4th and earn $50k for the effort!
