Nick Lowe is the unsung hero of the late-70s British music scene. As the legendary in-house producer for Stiff Records, he helped launch the punk and new wave movements, but on his 1979 solo album Labour of Lust, he perfected his own blend of infectious, hook-heavy power pop. Backed by the pub-rock supergroup Rockpile, Lowe delivered a slick, sneering, and endlessly catchy record. This week, the Random Album Generator spins the masterpiece that gave us "Cruel to Be Kind" and proved that "Basher" Lowe was a pop genius in his own right.Inside This Episode:Side A Reaction: We're splitting this 11-track classic right down the middle. If you're listening with us, hit pause after track six, "Skin Deep." Jeremy and Jon react to the bouncing, buoyant energy of the opening tracks and how Lowe seamlessly blends 1960s pop sensibilities with a punk-rock attitude.5 Fast Facts: We uncover the wild story behind the "two albums recorded at once" studio sessions, the hidden cameos by Elvis Costello and Huey Lewis, and the bizarre tracklist switch-ups between the UK and US releases.Side B & Final Thoughts: We flip to Side B and discuss the back half of the record, diving into whether Lowe's tongue-in-cheek humor and clever wordplay overshadow the genuine musical chops on display. The Verdict & Standout Tracks: Jeremy and Jon lock in their 3 essential tracks. Is this the definitive power-pop album of the 1970s?Join the Polyphonic Press Community: Love collecting classic vinyl or have a definitive pressing of Stand! you want to talk about? Twenty years ago I got an iPod. The rest as they say is history. Having published a mod fanzine in So Cal in the 80s, and then a website in the 90s devoted to mod style and cocktail culture, I was predisposed to be intrigued by this new fangled publishing medium called a podcast. I dove in head first on May 26, 2006 with the very first episode of It's A Mod Mod World, which quickly got rebranded to Mr. Suave's Mod Mod World. Now here we are 20 years and 600 shows later. I'm joined by some old mates from the Positive Steps scooter club to talk scooters, concerts and music both old and new. Is there a new mod renaissance upon us? That is the question I've been asking myself since last year. Sitting in Seattle casting my jaundiced eye on the scene from afar I ask you: is London swinging again? Over the years claims of new mod revivals have been made, and almost never supported, especially in the 21st century. I dive deep into the subject, here's my research and my opinion. Agree or disagree? Let me know. Either way I think you'll enjoy the show. A few weeks ago, Captain Content threw down a challenge to find great new music, and Kevin didn't just step up—he delivered in spades. Typically, we recognize all of the amazing recorded output of the current year at the end of the year; however, there are just too many great releases this year to wait until December. We're not even halfway through the year yet, and we already have all of these great tunes! Who was that said rock n' roll was dead??? What is it we do here at InObscuria? Every show, Kevin opens the crypt to exhume and dissect from his personal collection: an artist, album, or grouping of tunes from the broad spectrum of rock, punk, and metal. This week, we look at an amazing year of releases for the world of rock n' punk n' metal. We hope we turn you onto something new! Songs this week include: Starcrazy - “Prove Myself” from Prove Myself - Single (2026) The Gems - “Stars” from Year Of The Snake (2026) Bakko - “Do It For Me” from Another Sign Of The Decline (2026) Sugar - “Long Live Love” from Long Live Love - Single (2026) Tigercub - “Fall In Fall Out” from Nets To Catch The Wind (2026) Jane And The Killer Queens - “Dumb Blonde” from Dumb Blonde - Single (2026) Metal Church- “Deep Cover Shakedown” from Dead To Rights (2026) Elder - “Through Zero” from Through Zero (2026) Please subscribe everywhere that you listen to podcasts! From the vaults! Another long lost, but not forgotten, modcast of a bygone era. Enjoy. Welcome to Mr. Suave's Mod Mod World, modcast #131 if you can believe it. I don't know about you, but I've got the blues. The legendary queen of the blues Koko Taylor died a little more than a week ago, and that sparked me to dig out and revisit some my old blues, esepcially the British blues of the sixties, the early R&B. London's blues scene in the late 50s and early sixties spawned a number of bands and musicians that went on to great fame, many with very mod sounds - Rolling Stones, Georgie Fame, Them, the Animals, the Yardbirds and so on . And No doubt Ms. Koko Taylor was an inspiration to sixties mods who were blending the blues with rock, and jazz with soul, and creating radically new sorts of sounds. So, now it's time to get some mod blues. Remember, you can get all things mod over at the modcast homepage at www.mistersuave.com.
Text us! Conflict is a natural part of being human. We misunderstand each other, we speak too quickly, we act without thinking, or we make choices that hurt someone else. Because of this, the ability to apologize, and to respond to apologies and forgive, becomes one of the most important skills for maintaining healthy relationships. Yet apologies are often misunderstood. Some are rushed, some are demanded, and others never come at all. In today's Power Pop, Sandy talks about the importance of being able to apologize sincerely and know when to forgive, so you can save relationships by repairing harm and rebuilding trust. We want to hear from you, whether it's your stories about how self-esteem and personal power affect your life, or topics you'd like us to address in future episodes. EPYSODE 74: Are You Serious? by Van Duren. Guest: Van Duren. Additional commentary by Uncle Herff. In 1978, while punk was exploding and disco ruled the charts, a razor-sharp pop record quietly slipped through the cracks. Are You Serious? should have been a defining album of the late '70s. Instead, it became a cult favourite whispered about by collectors and power pop devotees. This week, we dig into the story behind this Memphis-born gem: the jangling guitars, the smart lyrics, and the Big Star–adjacent brilliance that makes this album one of the great lost power pop records of the era. How did it miss commercial success? From studio lore to standout tracks, we revisit a record that proves sometimes the best albums aren't the ones that topped the charts...they're the ones waiting to be rediscovered. If you love 70s power pop or overlooked vinyl-era classics, this one's essential listening. I hope you dig Are You Serious? as much as I do. - Farmer John ===CONNECT & SUPPORT=== Transport yourself into the realm of grooviness by supporting us on Patreon for as little as $2/month using this link --> patreon.com/FarmerJohnMusic Use this link to follow us on Facebook --> https://www.facebook.com/farmerjohnmusic/ Use this link to follow us on Instagram --> https://www.instagram.com/vinylrelics/ Use this link to follow us on TikTok --> https://www.tiktok.com/@vinylrelicspodcast Use this link to follow us on BlueSky --> https://bsky.app/profile/farmerjohnmusic.bsky.social And find us on X @VinylRelicsPod Email me @ farmerjohnmusic@gmail.com ===LINKS=== Grab all of Van's albums here: https://omnivorerecordings.com/van-duren/ Here's a link to the award winning documentary titled “Waiting: The Van Duren Story”: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bwxjkFjFPv4 Check out the Loveland Duren website here: https://www.lovelandduren.com ===THE MUSIC=== Songs used in this Epysode, in order of appearance.
