Ep 44: Nurturing Little Souls: Teaching God's Word to Young Children with Melissa McKenzie

My guest today is Melissa McKenzie.  Melissa holds a Master's Degree in Early Childhood Education from Stephen F. Austin University and is one of our favorite presenters at live conferences every year. She is an Early Childhood Professional who is committed to making learning a joyful journey. She has written faith-based and movement curricula and taught in a large Early Childhood Center, she was the FCS Childhood Guidance/Human Resource Practicum Teacher, and Preschool Director for Cypress Ranch Preschool for the last seven years. Today, she is a new grandmother and takes care of her grandson while his parents are at work. In this podcast episode, I get to ask Melissa about her passion for teaching young children about God's word. She is going to emphasize the importance of making the Bible concrete and relatable for children, rather than just telling them stories, and share with us her conviction that children rely on adults to teach them about God and it is an important task we shouldn't take lightly. Melissa shares practical examples of how she teaches the Bible to babies and toddlers, using object lessons and active participation. She also will discuss the importance of praying with young children and making it a personal and meaningful experience for them. She will give us insight into how repetition and reinforcement of lessons through various methods, such as weekly notes home and monthly activities for families can help as a tool. Overall, Melissa emphasizes the need for adults to approach teaching children about God with creativity, passion, and a deep understanding of the impact it can have on their lives. It's easy to tell that Melissa is passionate about teaching young children the truth of God's word at their level. I hope you will be inspired (maybe even a little bit convicted) to do better as you teach these little souls who God is.  Weave spiritual truth into your everyday interactions as much as you can and also be intentional about what you're teaching.  Melissa is a wonderful resource and you can find her on her website (linked below).  We'd love to hear how YOU make God more real to the young children in your care!  Let us know your best ideas via email or our social media channels.  We'd love to connect.   Melissa's website: https://mosaicconceptions.com/ As always, we would love to connect with you on Instagram and on Facebook

Lauren opened up about her experience as a child of divorce and her observation of how her mother's social life changed as a single mom. These observations have provided a level of compassion Lauren has when helping her friends or community members going through divorce. There are some great nuggets of information here for synagogue leaders on how to support their community.

Is this our first official episode of the summer?! That's what we're going to call it! We were so glad to welcome Erin McMahon into the studio to share her incredible story of coming to know the Lord and how that eventually led her and her husband into being foster parents. Erin works with us at Desert Springs as our Preschool Director, and we are so thankful for how she and our D|S Kids staff pour into our little ones. Erin grew up in rural Arizona outside of Bisbee. She describes that she grew up in a culturally Christian home but wasn't really sure of who Jesus was or that she could have a personal relationship with Him. In Middle School Erin really felt the Lord pressing on her heart to know Him and be in community with Him. Growing up in a rural area the options were really limited, and Erin had to be really intentional about seeking out Christian community. In high school she was finally able to make some connections to attend a church and through that church's youth camp Erin came to accept Jesus as her personal Savior. Flash forward a few years and Erin met her husband Benjamin at Southwestern Bible College (now known as Arizona Christian University). After being married for a few years Erin and Benjamin decided they wanted to try and have a baby. In the course of time, they learned that they would be unable to have children. After deciding not to pursue any kind of fertility treatments they felt the Lord leading them to adopt through the foster care system. This led to a years long journey of fostering and loving so many precious children, often for more than two years at a time. The road to adoption was much different than they thought, and the Lord taught both Erin and Benjamin so much about His grace for them but also for the biological parents of their foster children. You are going to be amazed, encouraged and challenged by this conversation. We don't want to waste any more time in the notes telling Erin's story, you have got to listen to this interview! Erin + Benjamin's Christmas 2020 Testimony Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PQEk_0gZb1cIf you are a foster care parent at Desert Springs or in the local Goodyear area, we would love to connect with you - email sarah@dscchurch.com.Would you please subscribe and leave us a review?
