This week, in Incline Village, Nevada, a horrible scene awaits police, when a car plunges 800 feet off a cliff, mangling the woman inside. Meanwhile, a man hangs from a branch, nearly 100 feet below the road, seemingly lucky to be alive. But was this really a tragic accident, or a truly evil plot to make it all look like an accident, just so he could grope women, in hot tubs?Along the way, we find out that famous people seem to like to hang out, in the middle of nowhere, that you should have more than a sprained ankle, when being thrown from the window of a truck, and that you should always care more about your dead wife, than finding your fanny pack!!New episodes every Thursday!Donate at: patreon.com/crimeinsports or go to paypal.com and use our email: crimeinsports@gmail.comGo to shutupandgivememurder.com for all things Small Town Murder & Crime In Sports!Follow us on...twitter.com/@murdersmallfacebook.com/smalltownpodinstagram.com/smalltownmurderAlso, check out James & Jimmie's other show, Crime In Sports! Rose trailmaps on skimap.org.Why I interviewed himThere's something so damn dramatic about skiing around Tahoe. The lake, yes, but it's also the Sierra Nevada, heaving and brutal, pitched as though crafted for skiing, evergreens loper-spaced apart. It's the snow, piled like pizza boxes in a hoarder's apartment, ever-higher, too much to count or comprehend (well, some years). It's the density, the always knowing that, like some American Alps, there is always another ski center past the one you're riding and the one you can see from there and the one you can see beyond that.Mt. Rose is one of just three Tahoe ski areas that sits fully on the Nevada side of the lake (the other two are Diamond Peak and Sky Tavern; Heavenly straddles the California-Nevada border). That whole Nevada thing can sap some of the Tahoe mystique. What is Nevada, after all, to most of us, but desert, dry, wide-open, and empty? I once slipped into a hallucinogenic state of borderline psychosis on a 122-degree drive Vegas-bound across Interstate 15. I was dead sober but sleep-deprived and in a truck with no air-conditioning the rippling distances tore my soul into potpourri and scattered it about the alien planet I became convinced I was crossing. But Nevada is a ski state, and Mt. Rose is its finest ski area. As the truest locals' bump on the block, it is a crucial piece of the Tahoe Zeitgeist, the place that tourists don't bother with, and that locals bother with specifically because of that fact. There are a handful of communities in America that count as their home bump a big, thrilling ski area that is not also a major tourist attraction. Bogus Basin, outside of Boise; Mt. Spokane, Washington; Montana Snowbowl, looming over Missoula. Where you can mainline the big-mountain experience sans the enervation of crowds. Mt. Rose is one of those places, a good, big ski area without all the overwhelm we've come to associate with them. What we talked aboutEarly-season openings; assessing the Lakeview chairlift upgrade after year one; why Mt. Rose doesn't operate into May; extending the ski day after Daylight Savings; could night skiing ever work at Mt. Rose?; living through 668 inches of snow; Ober Mountain; the upside of starting your career at a small ski area; the brilliance of Peak Resorts; where Vail went right and wrong in their acquisition of Peak; the existential challenges of Paoli Peaks; the Very Bad 2021-22 ski season at Attitash; fortress mentality; convincing Vail to upgrade the Attitash Summit Triple; what Gavrilets found when he showed up at Mt. Rose on Saturday of President's Weekend; how the Busers built Mt. Rose into a first-rate ski area; why the family considered selling Mt. Rose around 2017, and ultimately reversed course; committed to independence; “We're over $100 cheaper than Palisades for a full-day lift ticket”; how Slide Mountain, Mt. Rose, and Sky Tavern settled into their modern footprints; Mt. Rose's potential expansion; whether a ski connection between Sky Tavern and Mt. Rose could exist; future lift upgrade priorities; how The Chutes changed Mt. Rose's profile; slopeside lodging; destination potential?; the potential for a tram up to the ski area from Reno; and why Mt. Rose hasn't joined any multi-mountain passes. Why I thought that now was a good time for this interviewFew ski areas have more aggressively modernized since the turn of the century than Mt. Rose. The mountain dropped its first sixer (Northwest Express), in the ground in 2000, and opened its second (Zephyr), the year it opened The Chutes, one of the most singular terrain pods in the American West. In the intervening years, Rose has shuffled around and modernized the remainder of its lifts, and last year dropped a high-speed quad in place of the old Lakeview triple. The snowmaking system is one of the best in Tahoe. Next up: an expansion across the highway to intermediate terrain that would hang over Sky Tavern.Like Arapahoe Basin, whose oldest chairlift is a 2007 Leitner-Poma fixed-grip quad, Mt. Rose has quietly modernized amid the giants that were destined to destroy it. This isn't supposed to be the story. The story is supposed to be Corporate Conglomerates Are Killing Skiing!!! But they're not. Mt. Rose proves that in Tahoe like A-Basin proves it on the I-70 mainline.Skiers in Reno could easily drive up to Northstar or Heavenly or Palisades Tahoe. But Gavrilets tells us that Mt. Rose is doing better than ever, in spite of the fact that the ski area has no slopeside lodging, no megapass affiliation, and no name recognition outside of a couple-hundred mile radius. Why do you suppose that is?Mt. Rose is a counterintuitive case-study in why so many assumptions about modern skiing are wrong. A place in the market exists for a family-owned and -operated ski area that focuses on delivering a good product at an inflation-adjusted price that would not make a time traveler from 1965 gasp with horror “But that costs more than my car!”I can't always tell you what's wrong with skiing, but I usually know what's right when I see it. And just about everything that Mt. Rose is doing feels exactly right. What I got wrongI mispronounced the name of Mt. Rose's owners, pronouncing “Buser” like “Bus-er” (wrong), rather than “Boozer” (right). Why you should ski Mt. RoseWell there are The Chutes:And all the beefcake lifts:And the 30-minute drive from the airport, meaning that when you fly in to ski Palisades or Heavenly, you can stop and clock a half day at Mt. Rose for $69:And the manageable liftlines, and the parking right at the base of the lifts, and the 350 inches of average annual snowfall. This may not be your ski Narnia, your endless empty, but it's a less-frantic version of whatever they have down the road.Podcast NotesOn three ski areas that were once one ski area that are now two ski areasLift-served skiing on Mt. Rose started with a chairlift strung up from what is now Sky Tavern ski area to what is now the Slide Bowl area of Mt. Rose:Mt. Rose broke off from the lower-mountain area by the time it opened as a separate entity in 1964. The lower-mountain became a non-profit, volunteer-run, learn-to-ski center called Sky Tavern, which continues to operate today:The larger ski area's modern-day footprint was, for several decades, two separate ski areas – one on the Slide Peak terrain and another in Mt. Rose proper:They combined in the late ‘80s:Then, in 2004, The Chutes opened, giving us the Mt. Rose we can ski today:On Ober MountainGavrilets began his career at Tennessee's only ski area, which sits above Gatlinburg. You can access it via tram from downtown, or you can drive up. It's a tiny place, but still has a respectable 600-foot vertical drop. It's an Indy Pass partner. Here's a trailmap:On Peak Resorts and the Peak PassGavrilets spent a good part of his career at Peak Resorts, which Vail purchased in whole in 2019. Here's what their portfolio looked like at its height. The New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Pennsylvania ski areas were included on the Peak Pass outright. You could ski the Midwest ski areas with the pass, but it was one of those “stop by the customer service desk to get a ticket” deals. On the Attitash Summit TripleGavrilets spent a good part of his tenure at Attitash making the case to Vail that the company needed to upgrade the Summit Triple. This past summer, the company finally did it, putting a high-speed quad in its place. That lift is scheduled to open soon, and I went into great detail on the project with Attitash General Manager Brandon Swartz at the 6:12 mark of our recent podcast conversation:On the density of Lake Tahoe skiingThe Tahoe region may have the densest concentration of ski areas in America, with 16 lift-served Alpine ski areas circling the lake. Here's a statistical breakdown of each:On Mt. Rose's history siteMt. Rose recently re-vamped the resort history page of its website. Check it out.On reconfiguring the trails around the Lakeview liftWhen Mt. Rose upgraded the Lakeview chairlift from a triple to a high-speed quad last year, they also reconfigured several trails around it:On Galena ski areaMt. Rose's trailmap shows a potential expansion down across the Mt. Rose highway. Gavrilets tells us that Powdr had attempted to build a standalone resort called Galena down there. I could't find any information on this, but it would be cool if Mt. Rose could activate this terrain:On Shane McConkey crushing The ChutesOn connecting Mt. Rose to Reno via tramWhile it hovers over mild-weather Reno, which averages 22 inches of snowfall per winter, Mt. Rose sits at a monstrous 8,260 feet. Bridging that distance requires navigating one hell of a winding access road:We discuss a potential aerial lift up from town in the podcast, but I'm not sure if it's feasible, cost-wise, as it's 13 air miles from the airport to the ski area. That's about the same distance as the main strip of casinos. Like Gavrilets says in the pod, “if this was Europe, it would already be built.”The Storm explores the world of lift-served skiing year-round. Join us.The Storm publishes year-round, and guarantees 100 articles per year. This is article 111/100 in 2023, and number 496 since launching on Oct. 13, 2019. This is a public episode. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has released its most recent estimate for adults with chronic fatigue syndrome.美国疾病控制与预防中心 (CDC) 发布了对患有慢性疲劳综合症的成年人的最新估计。People with chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) suffer from at least six months of severe tiredness that is not helped by rest. They can also report pain and mental confusion.患有慢性疲劳综合症 (CFS) 的人会遭受至少六个月的严重疲劳,而且休息也无济于事。 他们还可以报告疼痛和精神混乱。Health officials said the study was the first nationally representative estimate of how many U.S. adults have chronic fatigue syndrome. The study gathered information from 2021 to 2022. It found that 1.3 percent of American adults reported having CFS or something like it. These numbers from the CDC are larger than earlier studies have suggested. They likely include people with long COVID, a condition of long-lasting sickness after a COVID-19 infection.疾病预防控制中心的这些数字比早期研究显示的要大。 他们可能包括患有长期新冠肺炎 (COVID-19) 的人,这是感染了新冠肺炎 (COVID-19) 后出现的一种长期疾病状态。The findings led CDC's Dr. Elizabeth Unger to say that CFS “is not a rare illness.” She was one of the writers of the report.CDC 的 Elizabeth Unger 博士根据这些发现表示,慢性疲劳综合症“并不是一种罕见的疾病”。 她是该报告的作者之一。The tiredness and other symptoms of CFS can get worse after exercise, work, or other activity. However, research suggests it is the body's overreaction to an infection or other shock to the immune system.医生不知道原因。 然而,研究表明,这是身体对感染或其他免疫系统冲击的过度反应。The condition gained attention nearly 40 years ago, when many cases were reported in Incline Village, Nevada, and Lyndonville, New York. Some doctors dismissed it, calling it psychosomatic. Psychosomatic means a problem is mental or emotional rather than physical.近 40 年前,这种情况引起了人们的关注,当时内华达州因克莱恩村和纽约州林登维尔报告了许多病例。 一些医生对此不屑一顾,称其为心身问题。 心身问题是指精神或情感问题,而不是身体问题。Some doctors also called it “yuppie flu.” “Yuppie” stands for “young, urban professional,” people who have good jobs and medical coverage.一些医生也称其为“雅皮士流感”。 “雅皮士”代表“年轻的城市专业人士”,即拥有良好工作和医疗保险的人。Some doctors still think CFS is a mental condition, experts and patients say.专家和患者表示,一些医生仍然认为慢性疲劳综合症是一种精神疾病。Doctors “called me a hypochondriac and said it was just anxiety and depression,” said Hannah Powell. She is a 26-year-old woman from Utah who was diagnosed after five years.汉娜·鲍威尔说,医生“称我为忧郁症患者,并说这只是焦虑和抑郁”。 她是一名来自犹他州的 26 岁女性,五年后被诊断出患有此病。The new CDC report is based on a survey of more than 57,000 U.S. adults. They were asked if a doctor or other health-care professional had ever told them they had myalgic encephalomyelitis, or CFS, and whether they still have it. About 1.3 percent said yes to both questions.CDC CDC officials said that results in an estimate of 3.3 million U.S. adults.CDC 官员表示,估计有 330 万美国成年人受到感染。The study also reported other findings. It said that CFS was more common in women than men. White people reported the condition more than other racial and ethnic groups. Earlier, smaller studies reported similar findings.该研究还报告了其他发现。 报告称,慢性疲劳综合症在女性中比男性更常见。 白人报告这种情况的比例高于其他种族和族裔群体。 早些时候,规模较小的研究报告了类似的发现。The findings showed there was less of a difference between women and men than some earlier studies suggested. Due to a mix of heavy, wet snow and a shortage of staff, roads were a challenge for crews to plow this winter in Incline Village.

Recorded at the iconic Tunnel Creek Cafe, home of Flume Trail Bikes in Incline Village, Nevada at the site of the Ponderosa Ranch and the old TV Western, Bonanza, Pow Bot and Trail Whisperer celebrate the transition from winter to spring, the arrival of "dual sport" season and awesome bike to ski missions, finding early season hero dirt and late season corn snow wearing flip flops and ski boots. The boys chat about why out-and-back rides are better than loop rides this time of year, recent mountain bike missions to Sea Otter, Pollock Pines and Quincy, California, a "First Descent" on Emerald Chutes after Pow Bot forgot his split board bindings and Trail Whisperer's former life as a Silicon Valley corporate employee and the satirical book he wrote about the experience, "The 5 Habits of Highly Successful Slackers - Because 7 is too Many." The boys also spend a few minutes chatting with one of the new owners of Tunnel Creek Cafe, Evan Roa, and the inevitable crazy stories of tourists frequenting the restaurant. This episode is a cornucopia of random topics!
So glad I got to do this interview at Alibi, which turned out to be one of the great unexpected treasures of the whole first season. It's on the northern end of Lake Tahoe, in a spot they call Incline Village. If you drive out of Incline Village and head uphill, pretty soon you're going to run into Mt. Rose, which is easily the best skiing dollar for dollar in the whole Tahoe Basin. And when you come back down that same road at the end of the day, go ahead and seek out Alibi Ale Works, where you're going to find a whole pile of the best sour beers you'll ever taste. They are masters of a craft that not many places can do well. And their restaurant down the way from the brewery serves some great food, too. This is my interview from February 2021 with owner Kevin Drake and head brewer Matt Garcia.

Endurance News: Alaska's first Ironman triathlon is held in Juneau By Jeremy Hsieh, KTOO - Juneau -August 9, 2022 Sunday's race in Juneau was the first Ironman triathlon in Alaska. More than 700 athletes finished the race. The first across the finish line was Alex Whetman of Riverton, Utah. It took him 9 hours, 11 minutes, 17 seconds to swim 1.2 miles in Auke Lake, bike 112 miles on Glacier Highway and run a full 26-mile marathon through the Mendenhall Valley. Liz Cullen of Gibson, British Columbia, was the top female finisher with a time of 10 hours, 23 minutes, 3 seconds. The first person from Juneau to finish was Will Coleman, who was 14th overall. Beth Gollin was Juneau's first female finisher and 13th female overall. John Bursell was Juneau's second finisher. He has completed several Ironman races in the past, and met his goal this time to qualify for the Ironman World Championship event in Hawaii in October. “It was a great experience overall,” he said. “I think Ironman did a great job. I was super-impressed and proud of Juneau. You know, the way people turned out — the support was incredible, the volunteers were incredible. And we heard that over and over again from people who came from out of town to compete. This was basically the most supportive community they've ever raced in.” Bursell said locals volunteered, loaned out their own personal bikes, opened up their homes to house athletes and even offered free car rides around town. According to a press release from Ironman, more than 1,400 people volunteered. The event had a lot of challenges. Race officials cut the swim portion in half, due to the cold water temperatures in Auke Lake. Before the race even began, logistics issues drove down turnout. In a press release, Ironman said “approximately 1,000” athletes came to Juneau for the event. An official list dated from April had identified more than 1,300 participants. Juneau's destination marketing organization, Travel Juneau, worked closely with race organizers. Executive Director Liz Perry said there will be a full debrief to work on making the second Ironman Alaska event go smoother. Perry said there's a three-year contract, meaning Ironman Alaska will be back in Juneau in 2023 and 2024. Steve and Cliff discuss the many tax benefits and incentives available for real estate investments. Listen to the full episode to learn more! Episode Transcript Intro: You're listening to the Practical Tax podcast with tax attorney Steve Moskowitz. The Practical Tax podcast is brought to you by Moskowitz LLP, a tax law firm. Steve Moskowitz: Welcome everyone. Thank you for joining our podcast. And we're looking forward to telling you a lot of tax savings in a very good area here, real estate. Traditional wealth has been built with real estate and there's all kinds of advantages to it. One of my favorites is OPM, other people's money. And there's all kinds of things here. For example, one of the things that Cliff is gonna tell you about, there's a government deal where the government will pay for 39% of the real property you choose to buy. You like that? I'll say it again. The government will pay 39% of the price and guess what? That's a gift. They just give it to you. It's not a loan. You don't have to pay it back. They just give it to you. And when somebody gives you something nice, what do you say? Well, most people say, thank you, but lawyers say more. I want more. Want to talk about all kinds of things like how you can make a real estate investment, a tremendous amount of money, profit and legally not pay any taxes on it. And this is the type of things that people look at and they say, look at the wealthy, look at the Fortune 500. They're making all this money, sometimes billions of dollars they'd be in profits and not paying any taxes legally, how can that be? And here's why. There's two purposes for the tax law. One we all know about is get money out of us, extracting taxes, but the other one is in democracy, the government can't order us to do things, even though it's good for the economy or it's good for society, they can't order us. So, how's the government get you to do something they want you to do, but they can't order you? They give you a tax benefit. And that's what this is all about. And you know, a lot of people just grumble and cry about, oh they take so much taxes out of my earnings. And that's true. But what we're gonna talk to you about today, although the wealthy people do it, you don't have to be wealthy. This applies to any socioeconomic group. You can be a regular normal middle class person, do all these things, and our goal is to get you to be those people that other people point to and say, look at that wealthy guy, look at all the money he's making and he's not paying any taxes on it. And maybe some of that's because you listen to us on this webinar. Without further ado, I'm gonna introduce my friend and colleague, the head of our tax department, who's also an accountant as well as being an attorney, Cliff . Cliff, you want to take it away? Cliff Capdevielle: Sure, Steve, thanks. So, lot of wealth in America has been generated with real estate. And as you say, Steve, one of the key differentiators is the ability to leverage, use other people's money, take out loans and put down a fraction of the cost of a piece of real estate and then reap the rewards as the value of that real estate increases. I'm up in Incline Village. It is now the average, Steve, the average price for a home up here and this zip code, can you guess? Steve Moskowitz: That's a toughie. Coming from San Francisco, shacks go for millions. Cliff Capdevielle: It's five million dollars is the average house. So, that is skewed because you have Larry Ellison and the other Silicon Valley billionaires up here with properties in the 50 hundred million dollar range. But you can make a lot of money in real estate just by holding it for a long period of time. And you can purchase real estate, as you said, using other people's money, leveraging that and deducting the interest that you pay for real estate. Now, it's recently been limited on personal residences, but on investment property,

Endurance News: Ten Swimming Myths Debunked and Revisited Years ago, I wrote an article debunking 10 of the most common myths I know of in the sport of swimming. Today, I want to revisit those myths (some are still prevalent) with my thoughts about them in 2019. Myth #1 To go faster in swimming one must push out the back of the arm pull Depending on where the swimmer puts the emphasis on the pull and how energetic the two parts of the body rotation are, the peak force of the pull can occur in the front quadrant, just in front of the shoulder, back quadrant behind the shoulder or at the end of the pull, pushing out the back. Swimmers can definitely increase their distance per stroke (DPS) by pushing longer and harder out the back, but it comes at a cost by slowing the stroke rate (SR). The relationship between DPS and SR is crucial. The multiple of both determines a swimmer's speed. Pushing out the back may increase a swimmer's speed (particularly in events longer than 50 meters), so long as the SR doesn't slow too much. Thanks to Pressure Meter technology, I have learned that the peak force during the propulsion phase of the pulling arm occurs at different points, depending on the technique of the swimmer. The peak force of the pulling arm is profoundly influenced by the coupling motions, as well as the strength of the arms. The coupling motion of body rotation occurs at two different times separated by about 2/10 of a second. The peak shoulder rotation velocity occurs first, as the recovering hand enters the water, and the peak hip rotation velocity occurs later, as the pulling hand finishes the pull and exits the water. What's New in the 303: Fountain Colorado, Bike Racing meets the Plains As populations and traffic grow along the Colorado Front Range, putting on road bike races has become increasingly difficult. Barry Lee and Sanitas Sports have turned some of their attention south towards Colorado Springs and the Eastern Plains. About a dozen or so miles east of the town of Fountain, about halfway between Colorado Springs and Pueblo, at the county school serving kids from all over El Paso County, the GROOVE Fountain Bike Festival was born in 2021. Now in its second year Kirk Hanna Park serves as headquarters, parking and warm up space for the two day event. Hopefully in the future there will be some live music and possibly camping options and said Race Director Barry Lee, “maybe even combining a weekend with a gravel / community festival such as Hanover days with the popular tractor pulls. Memories of my roots where I went to these as a kid in central Texas.” With quiet roads, rolling hills and majestic views of Pikes Peak and the distant Sangre de Cristo mountains, riders tackled a time trial on Saturday and road race on Sunday. Said Barry, “a couple of years ago Donna and local Rocky Mountain Tri club members took me out there to train on a 40 mile loop. I always find myself looking for routes to offer a selective, mixed rolling terrain that suit a more all around type rider and this area has perfect roads for that.” With infinite views from every direction, 303 Ambassador Sasha Underwood echoed Barry's vision and said, “they changed the course slightly this year, for the better in my opinion! In the middle the course, they put us on a mile or so stretch of dirt and I loved it! It was a perfect dirt road and was just the novelty I needed for a change of pace, challenge and scenery.” She continues, “The volunteers were awesome, the course, competitive but inclusive atmosphere, especially amongst riders. The group I was in included Collegiate Woman A and B, Cat 3, 4 and 5. We were a chatty bunch this year during the first half and there were a lot of first-time and second-time racers in the group.” XTERRA USA Championship Rotates to Colorado The 21st annual XTERRA USA Championship off-road triathlon will be held in conjunction with the new family-friendly and community focused weekend of events in Avon, Colorado on July 15-17, 2022. It's the first-time XTERRA has hosted its national championship in the Colorado Rockies, following 12 seasons at Snowbasin Resort in Utah (2009-2021) and eight years in Incline Village, Nevada (2001-2008). There will be $25,000 in prize money awarded equally to the top 10 elite men and women, plus XTERRA USA Championship crowns to age group division winners along with 51 qualifying spots into the 2022 XTERRA World Championship to be held in Trentino, Italy on October 1. FORM Goggles Experience Two athletes I coach started using FORM goggles and recommended them to me. I picked up a pair and they are really helpful when you are doing a workout. What they are How they help What they cost Overall assessment Upcoming Guests 3/25: A'nna Sewall of Athlete Blood Test and Jordan Jones of Powder7 Andy Potts and Daniel Brienza of APRacing Chris Schwenk about cycling and Zwift and his intimate knowledge of it and I think it would fun to share his love of indoor cycling, but also outdoors and his upcoming trip across the US. Quick-hitting news bits from around the globe and inside your community to keep you up to speed with the world! LOCAL NEWS: - Douglas County commissioners passed their plan the week before last that would have most businesses reopen to 100% capacity by May 1. That plan was reviewed Thursday last week by the NV COVID-19 task force and it was passed. So, beginning this Saturday, the first county surrounding the Lake will get back to normal – although masks will still be required (although I’m not sure how much of that will actually be getting enforced) - casinos will still continue to be regulated by the gambling board – this seemingly could pave the way for events like 4th of July fireworks and (possibly) the summer concert series at Harveys – all of NV is supposed to be open with only a mask mandate by June 1 – CA target date is June 15 - Governor Newsom tweeted yesterday that CA’s positivity rate is at 1.2% - lowest in the country, but also the lowest it has been in a year, so it looks to be on track - Over the weekend we had a little seismic activity when on Sunday morning a little 3.8 quake centered about 5 miles west of Dollar Point shook the basin –There as also an additional 3.2 magnitude quake just after midnight in the same area Monday morning, but I was out cold for that one – but the quakes centering in the lake bring up the discussion of a tsunami - Looking ahead to May 14 – that is the day that Clean Up the Lake will be launching their effort (& possibly the largest effort ever) to remove trash from Tahoe – we’re not talking about the beaches, we’re talking about all 72 miles of shoreline underneath the surface – the plan is for the team to dive 3 times a week cleaning roughly 1 mile per day at a depth of up to 25 feet – so this is planning on going almost through the end of the year - On somewhat of a controversial topic, the USDA forest service has released a new proposal that would build new trails and expand access on existing trails for e-bikes – according to forest service officials, about half the people approve and half don’t – As of now e-bikes are considered a motorized vehicle so they’re basically limited to specific trails and roads – this proposal would look to expand that by about 120 miles of new e-bike accessible trails - Couple of traffic notes – as of next week, Country Club Drive in Incline Village the street that basically runs from the lake (by the Hyatt and Lone Eagle Grille), past the college & up around the backside of the championship course will go from 35 MPH down to 25 MPH and if you are planning a trip over HWY 80 between today and Thursday – you will be detoured as the road will be closed from 8pm – 8 am for partial bridge over-crossing demolition - News from the west slope, the city of Placerville has directed staff to lose the noose in the city’s logo. Public comments were pretty harsh in its backlash – the noose has been incorporated into the logo since the 70s. Vice mayor Taylor was quoted as saying “our job at the city is not to fight change, but to navigate it” the motion passed with a 5-0 vote but it wasn’t without people not wanting to give into the cancel-culture movement NATIONAL NEWS: - China-US scientists create world's first human-monkey 'chimera' embryo amid an ethical storm. A joint research team from China and the US created the world's first embryo that was part human, part monkey as a source for organ transplants that some critics say could "open Pandora's Box" - NASA picks SpaceX to land Next Americans on Moon by the end of the decade. That was the initial goal but has since been supercharged with an ambitious target of 2024. The project is named Artemis which is name after the Greek Goddess of the hunt, the wilderness, wild animals, chastity, and (fittingly) The Moon. (Side Note: Elon Musk hosting SNL May 8th stirring controversy) - Apple is updating its iPhone software and letting users decide if they want to be tracked for targeted ads. The current default allows such tracking. But starting this week if you upgrade your operating system to iOS 14.5, there will be a pop-up that requires an opt-in to be tracked. This is expected to cost Google and Facebook ~$25B in ad revenue and severely disrupt the $400B overall industry. - Google Maps will now default to the “greenest route” (AKA most fuel efficient) for its navigation. People in a rush may be disappointed, as the former default was the “fastest route.” It will take in factors like inclines (more work for the engine) and traffic congestion (more idling) to help reduce environmental impact along with displaying air quality and weather of expected destination. - Amazon is equipping a Seattle Whole Foods store with its Amazon One palm-scanning device that lets customers pay by...scanning their palms. Amazon reportedly has plans for a broad rollout - Never has it cost so much to buy a house in California. The median price for a single-family home shot up to a staggering $758,990 in March — a nearly 6% increase from the previous record of $717,930 set in December and a whopping 24% increase from March 2020. Meanwhile, housing production has strayed farther and farther from Gov. Newsom’s campaign goal of building 500,000 units annually as the state’s homeless population swells to record levels

Since the onset of the pandemic, second home markets have heated up as the high-net-worth sought larger spaces, access to the outdoors and premier amenities. With working from home and remote learning a current reality for many Americans, second home markets are in high demand — and in some cases, becoming primary places of residence. Hear from top agents in resort markets about what their clients are looking for now, where they are coming from, how their preferences are changing, and if the market shows any sign of slowing down.A conversation with: The Donovan Group, Chase International, Incline Village, NV // Vance Young, Intracoastal Realty, Wilmington, NC.See the video recording of this episode at http://luxuryportfolio.com/conversations.
Yesterday we discussed the 72-mile iconic run around Lake Tahoe in the “Mistake By The Lake” Daily Hustle... The only actual mistake was the lack of road width that had us literally running for our lives... Other than playing chicken with cars, trucks and buses driving 80 mph, the #LetThemPlay LTP Foundation Lake Tahoe Run Loop experience was one of the coolest of my ultra endurance life... Late in the day at about mile 60, the traffic had finally died down and then we came across a brand new path that started at Sand Harbor Beach and took us nearly 10 miles to Incline Village... After 11 plus hours of running and the seemingly eternal game of real life frogger, that path might as well been the fucking yellow brick road to Narnia... As the sun was setting behind the West Shore mountains and glistening off the lake, Kowalski and I hit what I would describe as the most euphoric part of the run... “It's been a helluva day dude but this right here is why we do this shit.” As Kowalski and I both looked off into the majestic distance, he responded with one word... “INCREDIBLE.” Immediately after, we came around a bend and there was a family of 5 sitting silent on the stone brick wall at literally the most beautiful part of the sunset... Unfortunately, there was only one problem, they were facing the path instead of the lake and 4 of the 5 including the Mom & the Dad were all completely engaged with... THEIR PHONES.
Jacquie Chandler is one of my favorite people and there's no one who is more passionate about what they're doing! A self proclaimed Steward of Enthusiasm, Rosie Hackett, is a professor who leads the Outdoor Leadership Program at Sierra Nevada University in Incline Village, NV. Rosie discusses how you take self awareness, team awareness and environmental awareness (elements of her curriculum) and tie that into outdoor education and adventure. Rosie teaches us we don't have to summit Everest to gain the values of mindfulness and that learning happens with how to be successful and survive outdoors, but that these skills can be applied to our every day lives. "I've realized that the best leader is the one that is barely known. At the end, I hope that my students own these lessons and leadership qualities as their own. They don't even realize that you were the one facilitating it." - Rosie Hackett, Professor at Sierra Nevada University.
